Sources: State Department will shift North Korea focus to diplomacy

As tensions mount on the Korean Peninsula, Wolf Blitzer explains what's behind the threats and what's at stake in a special edition of "The Situation Room," Thursday at 6 p.m. ET on CNN.
Are you from South or North Korea? Concerned about the latest crisis? Send us your thoughts.

Senior U.S. officials tell CNN that at the State Department briefing Thursday, spokeswoman Victoria Nuland is going to try and take the focus on North Korea in a different direction toward diplomacy, as part of an administration-wide effort to calm tensions with North Korea.

The U.S. has been saying its military actions have all been defensive in nature and focused on the U.S. protecting its allies and its homeland. Now Nuland is going to send the message “this is time for diplomacy” and urge North Korea to stop threats and get back on the peace train, one official said.

Nuland is going to be setting up the fact Kerry is in Asia next week and will be talking about “finding a diplomatic way forward,” the official said.

There is no diplomatic solution to this problem. NK has successfully blackmailed us before and is simply looking for a much bigger reward this time!
China is NK's lifeline. We, the US, should immediately declare a national emergency and forbid any Chinese containers and container ships from entering our ports. Sure, our economy would suffer. But the Chinese would be devastated! Tell China "diplomatically" that NK is their problem to solve! Do it now, or suffer the consequences.

Such is to be expected from someone like you with your obvious limitations, Stan! Have you any notion to what would happen to this country if China stopped financing out national deficit? Our economy would collapse and don't state any right-wing bla-bla-bla to the contrary!!!

Debt is only paper and numbers! Containers are real!
If China wants us to default, so be it! Their bigger problem is where to send all their manufactured stuff!
Our banks and government are masters at making debts disappear, China cannot make containers disappear!

Try using Google before you state something you know nothing about. The Social Security Trust Fund is the single largest holder of the U.S. debt.

@Stancalif,you're stating unfactual crap again like in your other posts and do I and others have to keep calling you out for your ignorent rantings..There is a diplomatic solution and if you give the baby in N Koreas Un the cold shoulder showing him his irrelevance he'll likely just go away like ,just like the spoiled, annoying brat he is..It's been like this sable rattling since before Kong Ils regime back after the Korean war and its not going to do anything different now just UN trying to impress his people ,allies showing he's not scared of the big bad Americans that's all but deep inside he knows we've got him where he's been all along ,alone and in isolation as much of his starving nation is and believe me we're far from scared of China because we hold their economy in our hands as well buying most of their cheap crap, not Europe as you probibly think...So like I said and most others will agree if you let a baby cry enough he'll probibly cry himself to sleep as will UN not getting a response from the big bad Americans . He'll be quiet until something or someone gets under his fat little skin that's all to aggravate him once again, just a stupid cycle you have to ignore as stupid as your ignorent rantings!!

Very funny indeed! Look, it is something like that Nuland has not expected to see an actor wearing a business suit performed like a hunter. However, Kerry is planning to enjoy some delicious prey.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

Now that the White House is frightened, it wants to use diplomacy. But isn't that supposed to be used FIRST? Wouldn't it have saved everyone a lot of trouble if Obama had just picked up the phone and called Kim as he asked?

North Korea deserves no attention! Best to just ignore them. All this is about is another blackmail scheme which they have successfully used before. NO MORE!
North Korea is China's problem! Any diplomatic pressure should be on China. China could stop this in an instant, but does nothing! Close our US ports to Chinese ships and containers untl they "take care" of this little fat boy.

This never-ending cycle of North Korea blackmailing the rest of the world for $$$ and resources every few years is ridiculous. It is time to end the cycle. Either ignore them and go about our business as usual or bomb them back into Medieval times, which wouldn't be much of a difference from what they are now–The equivilent of a Medieval kingdom with nukes.

NK already told you MORON that they will not trade their N BOMB for $$$$$. So guess what they are going to do
      with their BOMBS.

  6. Bellicose Rhetoric

I guess they'll have to... They already stated that the US will not stand for a North Korean Nuclear State, which it is,... and North Korea does not have the capability to hit the US with a missile, which it does,... It really doesn't take too much to marry missile "A" to package "B" and deliver it to destination "C". You've already tested the long range missile for telemetry, range and flight characteristics with a similarly weighing payload. You've trued up your flight time estimations, and fuel consumption data. A little work with mounting a package on the rocket, and away we go! Looks like talking is our only real option now, especially since they are going to restart the plutonium making reactor. That gives them enough plutonium for at least 1 new device a year...

The estimate is based on a Nagasaki type device, but NK is using a much more sophisticated design, which uses less plutonium. This reactor will give them 3 bombs a year. Still, it's most likely that they've built a secret reactor, disguised as something else–like a coal power plant.

You mentioned "talking" is the only option, but I don't think NK is interested in talking!!! Few billions under table from uncle SAM would do the trick.

if we don't deal with North Korea now while they are with in reason weak and stupid we WILL have to deal with them at a later date when they are just stupid.
I don't want war but we have to destroy these idiots. The sad thing is that many off NK. People will fight hard for the great leader but if we could pick up these people give them a couple of months in the west they would go back and kill there own leaders.
Which is the worst a war now or a serious Nuclear war in a few years time.

... but, but... that makes too much sense. Steady now – calm, cool heads should prevail.. we'll be able to talk them out of their nuclear weapons and reunification with the south under a democracy. Who believes this baloney?!
