The first Syrian rebels trained by U.S. military and intelligence officers in Jordan returned to Syria on Thursday, a senior rebel spokesman told CNN.
About 300 rebel fighters received specialized training in Jordan in the use of various weapons, including anti-tank, anti-aircraft and other types of advanced systems, the spokesman said.
More rebel fighters are currently undergoing training.
Syrian rebels' efforts to topple President Bashar al-Assad have claimed more than 60,000 lives since the fighting began in March 2011. Another 940,000 have fled the country and more than 10% of Syria's 20 million residents have been forced to move elsewhere inside the country, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said.

The more I think about this, the more I think this could be a genius move. Give the rebels help: Not enough to win, just enough to not lose. Keep this cluster_ going as long as possible. Let the militants from the surrounding areas come in and fight just like Iraq; the major difference being we have no troops on the ground and no skin in the game. Let Iran and Russia spend $ and manpower and keep the extremists occupied with something other than plotting attacks on the US.

Good luck with this. You are providing training to people who after getting rid of govt in this country will attack and kill Christians. Learn from what happened in Libya, you got rid of Gadafi what happened after that? Same people with weapons and training you provided attacked embassy and killed innocent Chris Stevens. Look at Iraq; it will be in messed up satiation for next 100 years. Majority of people in these countries will always hate us and want to kill us, it will not change. Look at Pakistan, they burned entire village of Christians. Thousands of Christians in Pakistan are left with no home and robbed of all their life earnings. Muslims in Pakistan burned many neighborhoods and killed Christians. Its better such countries are left the way they are kept in order by the existing government even though by dictators. When you supply weapons and training to rebels and terrorists you succeed in getting rid of one dictators but in process you kill millions of innocents and whole country will turn against you and hate you for next 1000 years.

It would be better if Russia and the USA was on the same page but that's probably never going to happen. Why is USA supporting rebel fighters when we have NO MONEY to pay our own bills! We support rebels who kidnap UN peacekeepers? Well we should double check our thinking process! Why are we wasting money on countries that have and always will be in conflict. We waste billions on countries who will go back to fighting each other as soon as we leave. And they will hate us forever anyway. I agree with you 100%. I am in the Army and we are going through so many budget cuts it is not funny. We need to quit backing all the countries, work on our paying off the billions of dallors we owe, and instead of cuting the military build it up to defened our own country. The goverment wants to make Fed workers take a day off of work without pay to save money well quit spending money on countries that will never change so that you can pay the people in our own country.
