FIRST ON CNN: Iran confronts U.S. drone over Persian Gulf

By Barbara Starr

An Iranian fighter jet targeted an unarmed U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf this week, the Pentagon says.

It was the latest Iranian move aimed at thwarting American military airborne intelligence efforts in the region.

Defense Department spokesman George Little said on Thursday the unmanned MQ-1 drone was conducting routine classified surveillance over international waters on Tuesday when approached by an Iranian F-4.

The two aircraft came within 16 miles of each other.

The American drone was escorted by two U.S. military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Little said, adding that the Iranian jet departed after a verbal warning.

No shots were fired. However, Obama administration officials told CNN that the United States is concerned with Iranian intentions in incidents like this and whether such episodes could unintentionally trigger hostilities.

In December 2011, a highly sensitive U.S. Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on Iran's nuclear program for the CIA was captured by Iran after it crashed. In November, an Iranian warplane fired on a Predator over the Gulf.

After the November incident, the United States told Tehran that it would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with longstanding practice," Little said.

"We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward," he said.

The use of U.S. drones so close to Iran remains a highly sensitive issue for American military intelligence.

The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about Iranian military movements.

Iran's defense budget includes the quest for a nuclear weapon. I think the US should definitely "donate" as many needed on their nuclear projects around the country before Is Israel starts feeling "charitable". Obama (Jimmy Carter II) wake the frig up and get busy with Iran before it's too late. Dems definitely have a soft spot for Iran don't they?

This whole nonesense would end if we came to our senses had ties with Iran – both parties have much to gain from that relationship. Instead, we are allied with Israel, an apartheid, racist country, and controlled by their global network of nefarious, psychotic $zio$ $nists$ ( whose sole purpose iis to generate profits for themselves. Too bad the Phantom didn't fire. Flying over International Waters and "escorted by two military aircraft" ... probably Hornets or Electric Jets. It wouldn't have been a fair fight. "Fox – 1" and it's over. Iran is acting like a snot nosed punk that is so full of itself. I'm not hawing this up, but maybe it's time to show them what a Do Right Stick is ...

        Michael,

The Air Force and Navy do still use 'Fox' terminology but not Fox-1 anymore. For clarification Fox 1 = Semi-active missile like the AIM-7 Sparrow that is no longer used, Fox 2 = heat seeker such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder, Fox 3 active radar guided missile such as the AIM-120 (AMRAAM), Fox 4 for machine guns (Navy)

Ruled by "religious" leaders, oppressed people, limited contact with the outside world, due to it's own stupid ego and seeming need to be punks. On March 12, Commander of Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmaili said the Islamic Republic had identified and repelled an American U2 reconnaissance plane that was trying to intrude Iran’s airspace above the Sea of Oman on February 10.The radar-evading plane left the zone after receiving a warning from Iran’s air defense units.

Hogwash. The U2 is not a RADAR evading aircraft. The U2 would not be used to gather intelligence in a hot environment. If the US wanted to get info on Iran, Iran wouldn't even know they were being watched. Perhaps if those little pukes would play nice, they could go for a couple of days without being supervised. But as it is? I wouldn't trust them as far as I could toss their Blustering Buffoon. Klingon has a word for "people" like them ... P'taK

First of all the Iranian military doesn't have anything that can shoot down the U-2 it fly's too high so it would not respect any warning Iran could throw at it. Secondly you know nothing of the U-2 period

Get a grip there. The world didn't end with Operation Praying Mantis. In fact I doubt you even know one thing about it, but it was in 1988 and we sank a chunk of the Iranian Navy after they mined the Straits of Hormuz and one of our ships hit one of their mines and was badly damaged. Iran talks big but their military is very weak.

I wonder what the response from America would be if Iran, or more realistically China or Russia, were flying a military surveillance drone over international waters just off our coast. Let's just say I doubt very much that such flights would be described as "routine".

We would do what we do when the Russians fly close to our coast. Send out a fighter to watch them and escort them out of our air space when and if they enter it. It’s been going on at one level or another for 50 years.

The Soviets had AGIs, intelligence gathering ships converted from bit fish factory ships, sitting two dozen miles off San Diego and our orders were to not overfly them but leave them alone in international waters. We dealt with them passively by controlling what was said on the phone or radio. They are no threat if there is nothing on the air waves worth hearing.

    The pinnacle of stupidity!

America sends TWO MANNED aircraft to protect ONE UNMANNED aircraft! If the UAV is flying in international airspace, WHY send a UAV at all since the MANNED aircraft could do the same job? What? Have we gotten rid of all the E-3's, E-8's and TR-1's? What's the X-37B been doing lately?

It defeats the purpose to have unmanned UAV's doing work if MANNED aircraft are right alongside. Who thinks up these things and why are they in charge of any military ops?

In International Waters, the US has every right to protect its assets. This was not a stupid move at all. If the Iranian wanted to engage, especially because it was an F-4 against a pair of F-18s, F-16s or F-15s, that would have been the last action that pilot and RIO would have ever taken. plus, being over International Waters, the US would have fuel for the fire, so to speak. Actually, the CIA, et al, is playing by the ideas set forth by Sun Tzu (sp?) ... get your enemy to play their hand, to expose their weakness, to paint themselves into a corner. Not a bad strategy.

But, Iran *isn't* the US's enemy. They are just a country with a pair of nut jobs in power (surprise surprise...seems to be the norm for MANY countries of late...), who hold vastly different views than the US. The US and Iran *are NOT at war with eachother*! See North Korea and South Korea? Those are enemies of eachother; they are, technically, at war with eachother.

I'm pretty sure there was no fighter escort for that Predator until shipboard radars detected the incoming Phantom. Depending on where the Phantom launched from they could have seen it climbing out on take off. Then they sent two fighters to protect the Predator. This sort of jousting has been going on in the Persian Gulf since the Iran-Iraq war.

They're all doing different jobs and have different loiter times, that's why. Only once the situation escalated did the U.S. feel the need to scramble jets to escort/protect the UAV.

Why are we so confrontational with Iran. Are we owned by Israel that we cant decide for our own whom to fight or befriend. NORTH KOREA, is the country wishing death upon us, preparing for a war. Our politicians should focus more on that concern than worry about some mullah.

      • Don't be ridiculous

What evidence do you have that Iran wants us destroyed? Behind the scenes, 80+ percent of the Iranian population have a positive view of the US. Iranian women, when they can afford it, have nose jobs to look more like western women. Iran has said "It can see a day when there is no Israel" but this is a far cry from openly stating they will attack Israel. It's just wishful thinking on their part. We need to ratchet down the rhetoric and the open war, which is what sanctions are, We need to stop being led by the nose by the Jewish and defense industry lobbies and develop a relationship with Iran that allows moderation of their foreign policy stance. Iran should be a major trading partner of the US. It is through such a relationship ironically that we could best insure Israel's long term safety.

Do you know nothing of the history between our two countries? It goes back to 1979, involves a lot of bloody terrorism and threats on the part of the Ayatollah's attacks dogs- the Pasdaran (Revolutionary Guard) and Hezbollah- a covert terrorist arm of Iran's gov't.

Perhaps you don't know the history if you only think it goes back to 1979. Or maybe you only care about the parts of it that serve your argument. Either way, I would imagine an intelligence agency deciding to overthrow our elected leader and replace him with a despot would foster some hostility on our part towards the culprit. I realize that you are either unaware of or choosing to ignore what happened prior to 1979 (maybe your vast historical knowledge is based on the new Ben Affleck movie Argo), but to them there is a very real history of exploitation and treachery from our government's end.

You can't truly understand a historical event without understanding the perspective from all sides, not just one side you learned from our media or movies.

There is no behavior more primitive than making constant and capable threats to wage war and commit assassinations around the globe, every square inch of which has been declared America's battlefield. Except perhaps for the behavior of complacent American civilians who buy that this strategy is a means of keeping us safe, rather than just using violence to get our politico-economic way and to make handsome private profits off the perpetual conflicts.

Revealed: Pentagon's link to Iraqi torture centres

Exclusive: General David Petraeus and 'dirty wars' veteran behind commando units implicated in detainee abuse
The Pentagon sent a US veteran of the "dirty wars" in Central America to oversee sectarian police commando units in Iraq that set up secret detention and torture centres to get information from insurgents. These units conducted some of the worst acts of torture during the US occupation and accelerated the country's descent into full-scale civil war.

In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.

And of that only 15k had direct involvement of Coalition Forces. They kill each other in much greater numbers than the Coalition ever did. And yes they are still better off than when under Saddam. Under his reign many more were killed, you just didn't hear about it.

So two modern US combat planes, and one ultramodern combat drone, flying over international waters 15000 miles from their country.
One Iranian museum piece combat plane, flying over international waters 25 miles from their country.

Which of these is the aggressor?

Neither. If shots are fired over international waters, the one who shot first is thereby the "aggressor". Plus, the United States has a military alliance as well as military bases in the region. So the 15,000 mile argument is invalid. If you ever served in our Navy or Coast Guard, you would know what "AGI" surveillance is. It is the practice of placing unarmed surveillance vessels just outside U.S. territorial waters, usually outside of military naval bases (King's Bay, Georgia, Norfolk, Virginia, Pearl Harbor, etc...). They do it ALL THE TIME. Russia and China are the main culprits. We know they are there, we know they are NOT trawling for fish, and we NEVER fire on them.

Ok, so Iran wants to wipe Israel off of the face of the earth... It's a small country anyway, and maybe Israel could find a better place to set up a country, with more hospitable neighbors so they wouldn't always have to whine about needing someone to help them if Big Bad Iran got nukes. The Jewish community has more than enough money to build another Wailing Wall...

On the other hand, Iran isn't going to nuke Israel, You have Jordan, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq all within either blast or fallout range of Israel, and they are all predominently Muslim countries. Good Muslims don't harm other Muslims, the The Qur'an – القرآن الكريم and I quote... "Anyone who causes harm to a believer shall suffer harm brought against him by God" So if Iran did try to nuke Israel, by the Qu'ran's own direction, all the Muslims harmed would by holy law have the right to pay it back! That's a lot of pay back in that region. So nobody's doing nothing to nobody in that region,.. Israel can quit crying, and the US can stop doing border incursions with those overpriced toys into Iranian airspace.

After all, pretty soon the US can use the drones on us and quell the uprising of independent thinkers...

I think the Iranians wanted to escort the fighter jet out of its territory and we are playing a media war here...

They can't even shoot down a drone! LOL ROFLMAO. I knew a friend who was stationed on a US aircraft carrier, and many times the Iranian pilots would get lost over the Red Sea, and we would have to tell the Iranian pilot how to get back to land. Many times they ran out of fule, and had to eject over the Red Sea, and we would have to pick them up. They suddenly didn't want to go back to Iran any more, but we would ship them back anyway.

When you make stuff up Homer, at least try to make it beliveable. Before dreaming up a story, take a look at a map of the middle east. Iranian jets don't go near the Red Sea except commercial ones. If military jets did, their pilots wouldn't get "lost", and they don't go ejecting into the sea because they run out of gas.

From what I have read if any airplane that does not respond to the aircraft tower we as America have orders to shoot down that aircraft if it refuses to identify itself. I believe that America has satellites aimed at the territories we are talking about. We would know it was coming our way and destroy it. The iranian mess is they do not want us there so they are pushing it. Last thing any of us want is them ,here. a drone can wipe out a full mile depending on where it goes or aimed at. excuse me a five mile range . I know nothing of them except from my brothers who know far more than I do. I do know that iran and Pakistan are a major threat . they hate us and probably would celebrate if they hit what weare trying not to happen.

FIRST!: where did the article state the aircraft were traveling at MACH 2 (Twice the Speed of Sound)?
SECOND! A Predator or a Reaper cannot travel anywhere near the speed of sound. A Sentinel cannot go the speed of sound. The Global Hawk can only go a little more than 300 miles per hour.

Say Swoopmaster, pulling our legs a bit are ya. speed of F-14 vs 747? I've never wanted to learn to fly, but am curious. Back in the day, when it was possible, the captain gave me permission to come to the "deck,." and observe for 15 minutes or so. The navigator seemed the most involved. The others just visited and checked the topographical maps intermittently. The computers were obviously flying the plane.
i suspect that even Sullenberger did little "flying" of the plane. He knew almost immediately, the Hudson was the only answer. Changed coordinates, and told the computers to land the plane.

I'm reasonably certain an F-14, at takeoff is soon doubling the 150 to 200 knots at which a civilian jet aircraft is flying. Just sayin.'

As an Iranian-American, I only urge President Obama to focus on taking out the regime. Striking just the nuclear sites will do nothing in the long term. In the long term if we want to get rid of the threat posed to humanity by the Islamic Republic, we must support the Iranian people in regime change. Iran is the only country in the entire region that once liberated will become a true secular democracy. Otherwise, the threats posed to humanity by this regime will only get exponentially worse.....

I would imagine that the lack of escalation had more to do with the fact that an F-4 Phantom, on its best day, isn't much more than a target drone for our fighter jets. USA F-15 or F-16 versus Iranian F-4? Splash one Phantom!!

I'm IMPRESSED.. Iran has been able to keep F4 Phantoms in the air that we (The United States) sold them in the late 1970's, but cut off support and parts for following the Islamic Revolution in 1979. It would be interesting to know how many are left in an airworthy state after all this time. I'm guessing they've been pulling parts from non-functioning F4's to keep some in the air. The fact that any are still alive makes for an interesting story. One thing is for SURE, a 1960's vintage F4 Phantom is no match for any current US fighter plan. Yes, it's fast, but a flying Brick none-the-less. It's comical in a way that former US Military Jets are now being used to harass our state of the art drones 30 years after we sold them off to Iran 😉

Do not overlook Iran's Engineering capability. Yes their new "high tech" domestically produced vehicles are laughable, but their ability to reverse engineer and perfect component parts for aircraft is nothing to joke about. Those F-4's & F-14's are in good working order with parts manufactured in Iran to near identical specs as the original US produced products. Even though they are as airworthy today as they were 40 years ago, they are still 4th gen Fighters vs US 6th gen. The capabilites gap is huge and seeing as how their pilots could not shoot down a unmanuverable drone, I am not too woried about the Iranian airforce.

In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.

So... ummm... what purpose does a drone serve if it requires manned fighter escort anyway? 🙂

    March 14, 2013 at 8:24 pm | Reply
    • mvrck1984

Drones are not in any way shape or form meant to cover the duties of air to air fighters. Drones took over the mission of manned ground reconnaissance and close air support missions for ground troops. The easiest thing to shoot out of the sky would be a UAV because it has no survivability equipment. Its a pair of eyes with wings and missiles. They are taking over the mission of the Kiowa Scout Helicopter and the A-10 Warthog, with about 1/10th the cost of them.

  56. Smeagel4T

I was going to suggest just letting the drone crash into the F-4 next time, but knowing our bloated military-industrial complex, the new drone probably costs more than the old F-4.

Fat chance of that: even the fastest drone is slower than an old fighter jet.

      • Smeagel4T

I wasn't serious. In reality it would be something you might do if the fighter was crowding the drone just so you can say "oops, looks like the other guy got too close". In this case with the escort, the F-4 obviously wasn't crowding the drone.

When was the last time US built a Nuclear Power Plant or refinery? Hello, Anyone? Anyone? Bueler? If the Irans want to take target practive on US drones then let them and US can target practice on their jets. Aren't you people sick and tired of the hypocracy? If the history of other wars is any indication, the real problem is probably that they weren't buying their nuclear supplies from US corporations.

Ever think about how Hawaii stopped being an independent kingdom and became a US protectorate? It was because the US passed tariffs against the importation of sugar in order to protect the (mostly) Florida sugar producers. So the sugar produces in Hawaii engaged in the nasty political manipulations to move Hawaii from the wrong side of those tariffs to the right side of those tariffs.

Feel free to not do your historical research, little Bobby. It's not a big secret. Missionaries go to Hawaii to destroy the existing religions. Sons of missionaries don't want to be missionaries, so they go into the sugar cane business. US passes tariffs against importing sugar. Oops, that's bad for the income of the sons of missionaries in Hawaii. The sons of the missionaries stur up unrest in the kingdom. The US Marines are called in to "save the day" and, gosh golly, while they're there they turn Hawaii into an protectorate. Now all that sugar production is magically no longer subject to tariffs. It's a miracle!!!

"The American drone was escorted by two U.S. military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Little said, adding that the Iranian jet departed after a verbal warning." Wait – isn't the Iranian jet also in "International waters", and therefore allow to fly where it wants to fly? This statement above shows just how imperialistic and biased the USA is . . . . they expect to be able to fly in international waters whereever they want, but then apply restrictions on the flights of other nations . . . . had the Iranian jet shot at the drone, that would be a different story, but there is no such allegation.

Although they are over international waters military aircraft require potential threats to maintain a safe distance. Should an aircraft enter this safe distance it's weapons systems pose a serious threat. An aircraft that has been warned and does not respect this safe zone is considered a threat because it's intentions are unknown.

To rule the world, you have to rule all the seas and ocean's, and have the chaos everywhere, but at home in the U.S., but problems with North Korea which is allies with Russia and China, and Iran which is allies with Russia and China, someone is pushing the button's, and don't forget Egypt, who would be a big problem for Israel, but someone is having this country in chaos! We in U.S. know what we doing, but we know that we can not get in a war without our allies, we have to protect them, cause they will be the first that get destroyed, it would give us enough time to be ready if it hits home. But as we are the most powerful country once we have the technology to rule the space, we will rule the whole world. But till then we have to keep world in chaos, cause if these countries unite and nuclear weapons from Iran and North Korea blow up South Korea and Turkey, and Israel we would be alone and we just might loose. We won't get occupied, but we will be stuck on this humongous island.

Last time I checked your country is 16 trillion dollars in debt and has outsourced the vast majority of its production to other countries (god bless capitalism haha). Your country is rotting on the inside judging by your high obesity rates and poor diets, and you heavily rely on other countries for production of goods. The USA has already sold out its technological edge to China by traitors, sold out its laws to foreigners by Supreme Court justices being bought, and sold out its children by underfunding education and overfunding entertainment like video games and mindless TV. Our "Defense of 9/11 which lost under 3000 poeple has cost us almost 6000 live and injured 10's of thousands more. This does not include the 100,000's we have wounded and made homeless that had nothing to do with the attack. America needsto reevaluate it's mission statement both domestically and foreign. Then move accordingly

F-4? Aren't those things obsolete? I believe the Turks lost one – Syria shot it down – just recently, so no news here!

Well guess what. they got them from us. and we trained their pilots. I know I was there at the time.
We also gave them the Hawk missile system which after the hostage crisis we then had to figure out how to defeat.

Whats kinda ironic about this report is that our military told them they didn't have the right to be in International waters like we were??? Yeah, we are arrogant at times.

They were told not to interfere with our aircraft, not that they could not be in international airspace.

At 20,000 feet the visible horizon is 346 miles. Most military aircraft operate between 30-40,000 feet. So yes, they could see each other.

Couldn't see it? Maybe, maybe not, but have you ever heard of radar or AWACS aircraft? They definately DID "see" it.

I wonder how we would like it If Iran bring one of its warship and park it in international waters off our shores, or even worst park it in Cuban waters and start to fly drones and spying on us?

We should stop this provocation of the Iranians, and leave the Persian Gulf, we have no reason to be there!.

The U.S. has allies in the Persian Gulf that want us there as well as securing the region's oil flow. The U.S. has every right and duty to be there.

Just as Iran would have every right to fly drones around our borders to fly on our military movements? Don't think many would like that.

The US has for decades spied on every country on earth. Its about time for this rubbish to stop. Most of the wars going on are using US made munitions on both sides. The US lives off the blood of innocents.

I think it has more to do with what the Iranians intended, as they did not try to communicate with the drone's escorts and instead made a beeline/actively targeted the UAV.

Did you forget that Russia is always running missions right outside of Alaska. Didn't the just run two nuclear bombers near one of our island territories? What did we do? We met up, exchanged greetings, and moved along.

      Noshel,
FYI, Russia has submarines off the US shores, including in the Gulf of Mexico armed with nuclear war heads. Also their bombers still fly from the north sea, pass GB, Iceland, or Greenland and down our coast to Cuba. Everyone is still spying on everyone else. It's no big deal as long as no one shoots. That's business as usual.

I have no problem with the Spying, if our Government acknowledge it and when they find themselves in confrontation situation, they simply just back off and let it go. What we are doing in the Persian Gulf is not spying for say, but confrontation with Iran, using it as a trigger to justified a war with them, which to me is not called for. and Let me be the first to tell every one, Iran already have NUKES, I get it from reliable source

Sorry, the U.S. is the world's superpower that has great responsibilities around the world. The rogue fascist regime of the Islamic Republic has no moral equivalency to what the U.S. does and the responsibility the U.S. has to do the world. To make such false comparisons, demonstrates moral cowardice.

There is a problem with that... they sent 2 warships to Libya to get weapons and missiles to Kadhafi. One of the ships had problems and needed help from the Italian navy when it was taking water. The other one moved back to Iran, leaving the cripple ship and crew behind. After repairs on Cyprus, the other ship returned to Iran. Those 2 ships had moved into the Indian ocean but returned home when a problem with the machines was blocking the speed of the ships in 2 miles per hour.
They sent 3 cargo vessels to Venezuela. Nobody knows what was inside...
And they got the RQ-40 but they only managed to build a cardboard stealth plane....
And there plan to block Ormuz? Sink 30 of there navy cargo vessels. Great firepower... The 120 or so crew of those ships would need to swim for there safety... if they got out alive of there sunken ship.
So great tactics... from a very advanced navy.

Dude, stop embarrassing yourself. The strategic economic interests of most the world hinge on free flow of Arabian oil through the Straits of Hormuz.

If you're really interested in GETTING THE U.S. OUT of the Middle East – try supporting the Keystone pipeline and drilling in ANWAR, off both U.S. coasts and all over America.

We could withdraw from that region forever – let them fight it out. See? See how it works?

You either have a very short memory or never learned anything from history! During the height of the cold war the Soviet Union did have spy planes and boats off our shore and had bases in Cuba. Did we like it? Of course not! Is there anything we could do about it? Nothing comes quickly to mind. What would happen today? Much the same thing. In fact I suspect that Russian and Chinese spy sattelites are going over us as we speak. And as to drones. Probably not, but if there were and operating in international waters there isn't much we could or should do about it.

Since America is a free and open country why would they need to do that?? All they would have to do is charter a liesure airecraft and they can fly almost any where they want as tourists.. The Russians and Chineese do it all the time.. It is the fact that they are a closed country like North Korea with a gustapo like police force that arrests anyone they think might be looking at something..

You do NOT fly drone in International water, but spying in other country's territory. You can fly more sophisticated aircraft in international water. It is laughable to say that we are flying Drone in International water. Any country has right to defend them self.

The operator needed to get some sleep, they fly in open territory in a pattern so the dude can get some sleep.
Don't worry, when he awakes, you can be sure the drone will not be over international waters.

You obviously would be against us flying spy planes over Cuba in 1962. The endeavor thwarted a the nuclear armament of Cuba. Rather you would suggest we allowed Cuba to receive weapons from the USSR without so much as even looking at them?
