FIRST ON CNN: Iran confronts U.S. drone over Persian Gulf

By Barbara Starr

An Iranian fighter jet targeted an unarmed U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf this week, the Pentagon says.

It was the latest Iranian move aimed at thwarting American military airborne intelligence efforts in the region.

Defense Department spokesman George Little said on Thursday the unmanned MQ-1 drone was conducting routine classified surveillance over international waters on Tuesday when approached by an Iranian F-4.

The two aircraft came within 16 miles of each other.

The American drone was escorted by two U.S. military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Little said, adding that the Iranian jet departed after a verbal warning.

No shots were fired. However, Obama administration officials told CNN that the United States is concerned with Iranian intentions in incidents like this and whether such episodes could unintentionally trigger hostilities.

In December 2011, a highly sensitive U.S. Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on Iran's nuclear program for the CIA was captured by Iran after it crashed. In November, an Iranian warplane fired on a Predator over the Gulf.

After the November incident, the United States told Tehran that it would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with longstanding practice," Little said.

"We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward," he said.

The use of U.S. drones so close to Iran remains a highly sensitive issue for American military intelligence.

The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about Iranian military movements.

You are a well known anti-Semite and I know exactly who you are. And as an Iranian born American (born in Iran, then became American) I very well much understand the threats posed to humanity by this regime. As someone born in Iran and have been back to Iran over five times including over 8-months in 2010, I understand this Islamic imperialist regime knows no bounds. At the end of the day, this regime must be taken out. Striking the nuclear sites alone may embolden this regime. We need to focus on regime change and regime change only. The Iranian people always say that "only if Iran, not Iraq". In Iran, there would have been no post-war terror. Iran is the only country that will become a true liberal secular democratic society. History has taught us that evil must be defeated, not appeased..!

Iran needs a regime change that is true. But the population of Iran needs to do this, like all free people of the world have done. The US and other powers must wait for the Iranian people act and then support them, An Iranian would not
support any military action against his native land. War is not the way, the Iranian people will rise and overthrow this
    regime by themself,
It is against US and international law to attack Iran Pre-emtively. We cant break the law and then be upset when others do.

"like all free people of the world have done"

Many times throughout history and even to the current day, the free people of the world have become free with outside help. Even in the U.S. we needed the help of the French. And as an Iranian and someone who spent over 8-months in Iran in 2010, many Iranians very much wish the U.S. would liberate Iran. As many Iranians say, Bush's biggest mistake was liberating the wrong country first.

The economy is on the upswing (see the stock-market), the jobless rate is falling steadily, and if anything the Obama administration is trying to avoid war. Now, go back to the hole you crawled out of, and let the adults continue their discussion.

The Jobless rate continues to grow despite what our media says. The rate is near 25%. The stock market can not be looked at as a sign of economic recovery. Anyone who says this doesn't understand economics.

      • Eric

Wait I thought the evil sequester would destroy the economy... You are trying to tell me it has posted nothing but substantial gains in the private sector ever since the sequester happened? Also the unemployment number is not so simple as the percent you get. It is much more important to see if the job force has grown or contracted. People not seeking employment and those unemployed for months at a time are usually not considered part of the work force thus the percent can go up even if less people are working. Maybe a remedial course in mathematics would help you understand percents and fractions.

USA troops and military assets are in the Persian Gulf to keep some Arab Sheikhs in power, Iranian forces are there to defend Iran. I know for certain that the Iranian armed forces will not retreat one inch from their duty which is defending Iran.
Sassan jan we do not want any help from a power that over threw our democratically elected PM in 1953. If the CIA had'nt done that we would have been amonst the top 5 countries on earth today. This suggests to me that USA government is not and has never on the side of the Iranian nation. They do not want to see an independent and strong Iran no matter what the system of government.

Take your hatred back to Iran! Don't think for a second America is going to turn their backs on the Jews. The Jews have been through more than their share of atrocities–more than Iran or any other people can cry about!! Personally, I don't want Persians or Arabs in America, how's that! That's coming from a white Gentile who understands the plight of the "Zionists" (Jews).

Bryce, the vast majority of Iranians (especially in America) have no problems with Israel and are overwhelmingly pro-American. Iranians are simply not religious people (especially the Iranians in the U.S.). I think you should differentiate between the Iranian people and the terrorist regime of the Islamic Republic. For example, I am Iranian-American (am atheist), love America and am very much pro-Israel. I think it would be wise to make this distinction.

But Iran is a different story. Them and nukes is nothing but danger to the world. Has nothing to do with Israel. Iran will arm every terrorist it can find with nukes if it is allowed to continue. It is amazing to see that almost all Americans here are advocating for Iran to be nuked over such a small incident. Of course that only shows that Iran should nuclear weapons since Americans only understand the language of force. Yesterday I was watching a US army colonel on 38 parallel saying that US still recognizes the armistice despite North having nullified it.

This is the real Americans. The moment they learn the opponent has half a dozen nukes they start acting like docile dogs. As for Iran, they have done a good job. After all Americans are known for shooting down civilian air crafts full of children and Iran should patrol those international air corridors more often. The world has not yet forgotten about Flight 655 and how Americans butchered dozens of children aboard it.

See... here we are free to practice what we want or not practice and although we have a ways to go with equal rights we are trying. We dont like Iran and to be honest still owe them some payback for the hostages. But they're continued threats towards our allies garners our attention and so exposes them to the wrath of our military. Dont want to get bombed ? Then dont develope nuclear weapons and threaten people with them. We dont need to drop nukes to set them back 1000 years. Would be nice if no one had nukes anymore.... But that is the only semblance of power countries like Iran can muster.... late to the dance and illequipt

You are mixing the thugs of IRI with decent people of Iran, Johnson.
Iranian people (not the mullacracy of IRI) are perhaps one of the most, if not the most pro American population in the region.
They were the first among nations to hold vigils for the victims of 9/11 and extended their condolences to the American people. It was disheartening that 52 Americans were held hostage in '79, but currently they are 70 million Iranians prisoners of the mullahs.

Amir said it beautifully. Iran has become one big concentration camp of over 75-million people. The vast majority of Iranians are not religious and are secular people. The terrorist fascist regime of the Islamic Republic has unfortunately made the last 34-years into darkness and terror. The downing of the civilian aircraft was regrettable, but it was an accident. What kind of point are you trying to make here? Accidents happen in war. I think the US would show and does show much more restraint than if the roles were reversed. In conflict there are always winner and losers, how the winners respond afterwards shows their character. For instance, in Iran after the Islamic Revolution 7900 political prisoners were executed in a 4 year span.

      • lastsolfa

Yeah it was accident. Despite US big spendings on military, it is technically unable to distinguish between civilian airplanes and jet fighters. Accidents happens, 290 people died, whatever who cares. On the other hand, some people were taken hostage for 444 days, lets make a movie about it and give it the whole spectrum of awards possible.

Allow me. Although it is very difficult to believe an Airbus A300 could be mistaken with an F14 Tomcat, we must remember that it was one year before this incident that USS Stark was fired upon by Iraqi air force. That on top of the fact that the Vincennes was being harassed by Iranian speedboats contributed to the confusion the led to the great tragedy where 290 innocent passengers and crew member perished.
I believe it was an accident although I thought a hero welcome of the captain (my neighbor) was on called for.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

From what I've read, those white boys in southern Italy have caused a whole lot more trouble than a country in the middle east that has never attacked anyone.

Every month (usually at the end of the month) The Russian Air force sends out a strategic bomber into Alaska's airspace to test the response time from fighters stationed in Eielson AFB. Only a couple times has the bomber traveled too far into our airspace to were it nearly caused a conflict. All this talk about countries don't invade our airspace is nonsense, considering the Russians have been doing it for years!

The Tupolev is a weekly visit... not monthly.
The russians do that to test there own crews. Not only on Alaska but to the East of Iceland too. And they just get 5-6 miles inside the territory and turn back when they got contacts on there radars.
The only time they got too far was in 2009 over England. When one of the planes made a right turn instead of a left. The british sent there units too late and found the plane with land just ahead. After that, it was escorted out of Nato fly zone.
I think it was on 2010 that 2 Raptors got a trip with the 2 russian tupolev during the Atlantic trip. The raptors where refueled in flight from the Azores air base and got to the russian air space borders. It was the first time the Russians tried to get information about the raptors since they where so near them. 😀
(most of the russian pilots know the americans 😀 they have nice talks on the radios on those trips)

What makes a growing number of Americans angry is the utter lack of righteous anger this administration exhibits toward the existential threats we face abroad and at home. We want a leader — not a celebrity — who puts the nation’s self-preservation above his own.

This is nothing like the Gulf of Tonkin. The US Navy and Air Force have maintained and operated a strong military aircraft presence there for more than two decades and in accordance with international law and treaties with allies to use their airspace.
Iran on the other hand has repeatedly engaged in hostile and illegal actions in the region, including the mining of the Persian Gulf which severely damaged USS Samuel B Roberts, and the other passive-aggression against US ships and aircraft, including threats against ships that are firmly in international waters and aircraft in international airspace.

Yes the US has made mistakes in the past in order to justify conflict, but in this case it would appear that it is in fact the Iranians that are ratcheting up the tension in the region, while the US seeks withdrawal and realignment to face a potential conflict with North Korea.

        March 14, 2013 at 5:27 pm |

This is a fair assessment, and one that is rooted in history. During the Cold War, the Soviets would run Tu-95 Bears towards US and Allied airspace, forcing US and NATO forces to respond. In many cases, the Tu-95 would be intercepted by a pair of fighters and they would turn the Bear around and escort it away from the area.

However, the article doesn't claim that the Iranians did anything illegal, but the US personnel that were interviewed do appropriately point out that with the lack of regular communication between the two countries, and with the Iranians having previously fired on a US drone, there is the potential for a misunderstanding that could lead to a conflict.

Note the words "Defend our aircraft" The official isn't saying the Iranians aren't allowed to fly there, he's merely noting that if they should engage in hostile action against our aircraft in international airspace then we are prepared to defend it. It's a very similar idea to the concept "Do Not Fire Unless Fired Upon". Also remember the Iranians did previously engage a US drone in international airspace, including firing on it, which does mean a heightened US concern over these Iranian interceptions.

All US forces are permitted to defend themselves against hostile action, including drones. However as the article notes there isn't a lot of communication between Washington and Tehran, and that means things get confusing at 20,000ft over the Persian Gulf, whether its a drone or a manned fighter.

Only a fool would believe anything that our government has to say about Iran and regardless of what you think you must admit that they have never attacked us. Iran does not want a war because they know that they will loose so then ask your self why is the American government so eager for war? The American government wants war for one reason and that is the petro-dollar. Iran wants to sale it's oil for anything other than the US dollar and even though I am an American citizen I think they should be allowed to sale it in whatever currency they wish, it's their oil. If you want war with Iran then you are saying that you do not care how many will die and you are as sick as the people who run the American government and the central banks.

Granted, the PEOPLE of Iran do not want to fight, but the leaders – who believe that they must "wipe the little satan off the map (Israel), and destroy the great satan (the US)" have said REPEATEDLY that they do want to use nuclear weapons to accomplish their goal of ushering in the Islamic messiah, the 12th Imam. You are correct in saying that the US did nothing wrong but our government did. Our government has been trying to provoke a fight with Iran for the past decade at least and Iran has been wise to not get pulled into a fight. The US government stated that it was flying in international airspace but to me it is the same as someone pacing back and forth in the street in front of your house calling you out to fight, that would be wrong and the US government is wrong. You were also correct in saying that Iran did nothing wrong and I agree, they did everything right. They let the US government know that they were spotted and that they would be targeted for retaliation if the drone piolet made an aggressive move. The Iranian government has the duty to protect it's people from our government who is the obvious aggressor. We have no business with Iran as they do not want anything from us including the use of our money, Iran has publicly stated that it just wants to be left alone.

The State of Israel is no friend of the USA. Google on the USS Liberty or on Jonathan Pollard. Iran has signed the NPT – Israel has not. So Iran is open to inspections and Israel is not. I trust Israel as much as I trust the Religious Right Wingers that run Iran. Remember: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Jews do not have to follow that rule but Christian and Moslems do.

I agree and if I could help them take out the drones I would. Our government is begging for any BS reason to go to war with Iran and the sole reason why is because of the petro-dollar. If Iran refuses to use the US dollar for an exchange medium then our central bank becomes irrelevant and they loose power. Our government does not care how many Americans or Iranians will die for a useless war. As painful as it would be for us, the best thing would be for the world to go to a new currency of gold and silver or a currency backed by gold and silver. However the central banks would still be able to manipulate the world economy if we used a fiat currency.

Some of the banter on here is a waste of space... Its like watching overgrown children slapping each other with pool noodles and expecting to make progress. Iran obviously felt the need to respond to the drone. It probably was in internaional space but since they have had plenty of time to watch what we do with our drones they would know what our capabilities are. This incident goes to show that this administration is keeping the information flowing for the benefit of those civilians and military who want to stay informed on the iranian matter. It also shows us tensions are as high as ever even though there is an attempt to show an attempt at some kind of dialogue. Even with any type of dialogue this incident enlightens us to the realities that if they made any type ofa deal, they still have something to hide. Reading between the lines. Food for thought? Mmmm...

Yours is one of the few comments even worth reading. Indeed, to read most of them is an exercise in futility – and quite evident they did not read the story – their too interested in mindless noodle slapping – none of which is going to persuade anyone of their view if they even have one. To your point, I would agree, much of this is the classic cat and mouse game that we to this day play with the Russians but we always have the phones open.

So if the tables were reversed. Your telling me that if Iran had a drone near the US boarders but within international waters that we would be OK with that? Seriously the US has a double standard at times. I remember times when Russia sent planes over Alaska or how about when Russia was cozy with Castro? I'm not sticking up for Iran. Good post (amongst so few worth reading). And yes, it is precisely what we would and currently do. We chase Russian bombers near our airspace to this day – and even if it is not reported I would guess they probably chase us away from theirs too. And China too and so on. So the question then is how is this any different. So what, Iran monitored a drone – we do that (and probably would have shot it down). The problem really isn't the drone – its Iran. As soon as we say Iran – the new boogeyman – well try having a rational argument then.

Are all these drones we are flying over other countries considered "US territory"? If so, then perhaps we could avoid conflict by simply not flying them over other countries... just a thought.

Of corse not. The Sea of Oman is in open "international Territory" and I have a hard time believing that you think Iran, Iraq, and Pakistan (all places CNN and others have reported drone activity) are viewed as "US Territory". Also the whole "just don't fly them there" thought single handedly defeats the very purpose of the recon missions.

The Sequestrr is a mutually agreed- upon tool based on the inability of Congress ( specficlly the House and GOP). The current budget ends in September, the end of FY13. "Drones", to the unlettered, are UAVs employed as one of the tools available to military leaders. They are far cheaper to use, don't occupy a flight crew, extend the life expectancy of more expensive manned aircraft, and puts no US life at risk. UAVs make good sense to use....especially by intelligent professionals unlike yourself. Grow up, study, and perhaps you will be able to understand the obvious. They will bomb the refineries in Saudi Arabia, once those refineries are crippled, Do you know what will happen to the US and world economy. There would be a slight disruption, not a catastrophe as you indicate. the worlds oil corporations have losts of contingencies. they have actually started converting old oil tankers into floating refineries. that way they can refine the oil anywhere in the world that they need to. ive even seen one hooked up to a oil platform, refine the oil and then transfer it to a waiting tanker.

No, they don't. They're called FPSO, and they just transfer the crude from the production platform to a tanker. A refinery cannot fit on a tanker, even a ULCC or VLCC.

Quit provoking stuff. Here is an idea, make Israel sign the Non Proliferation Treaty, open their areas/Dimona up to total inspection, and RETURN the nuclear material Israel STOLE from us.

You're the idiot... Intelligence gathering on the nuclear program is what's happening here. There will never be an invasion of Iran. Just tactical strikes on the nuke program facilities.

I can see all the nuclear debris floating on the jet stream right over to dear old California. You military adventures have been SUCH a success. We have 50% of our Vets going on DISABILITY. Between the toxic burn pits, the Depleted Uranium, PTSD, we are going to end up with 75% causalities AND bankrupt from the graft, THEFT, corruption in the upper reaches of the military. Have you ever heard the term PYRRHIC VICTORY. ????????

But we "didn't go too far" according to the report, the drone was in international airspace.

Amazing. Remember the US reaction during the Cuban missile crisis? But it is OK when the US throws a hissy fit but no other country is allowed! No wonder everyone loves the good old US of A.

Yes, because if another country was flying drones close to our shores we would have a complete meltdown.

Umm, if I'm not mistaken, I am not, an Iranian passenger jet was over "international waters," and the US military saw it as an hostile act, or provocation, and shot it out of the sky. Then, after the typical, "sorry 'bout that," offered a pittance in compensation, compared to the Lockerbie "settlement." Which was based upon a single small (almost microscopic) piece of metal, which was certainly not overwhelming evidence of Libya's involvement. Conceded by many "experts," after the trial was over. Oh, the hubris.

      You are mistaken.

      March 14, 2013 at 3:34 pm | Reply
      • He's not mistaken

The US did in fact shoot down an Iranian passenger jet because they saw an Iranian F14 take off at the same time and the officer on the ship mistook the passenger jet as the F14. He also panicked and claimed that the passenger jet was "diving at the ship" when in fact it was climbing. it was later determined that the officer "f'd" up for lack of a better term.

yeah right, given the fact that the radar signature of an airliner is identical to a much smaller F-14, not to mention the airspeed

@mshg714,Supposidly SR71 Blackbird took more fuel than munitions making it unfeasible as a tactical bomber and if it were to get off the tarmac it had to be refueled immediately or it was coming down it ate that much fuel, retired in the 90s all but two...B52, the old workhorse still rules the skies and we still use them for long haul operations because of relieability being it set so many aeronautical records in the Guiness book of records flying over 50 years ,just look it up our AirForce is proud of them as SAC,Stratigic Air Command is as well...

The SR-71 could cross the Atlantic in 1h 54m while doing Mach 2. It could cross west to east over the USA in 67.54 minutes. It had a flying range of 8,640 miles. I would say it was good to go for reconnaissance over Iran.

        March 14, 2013 at 3:58 pm |
      • OO7°``

Also, it did not carry any munitions of any kind because it was designed for spying. If it was fired upon it relied on speed.

IT is a problem because anyone this lady ever talks to should be concerned A. If shes F o S, or 2. IS just completely ignorant of the truth; but talks about something like she knows...

No longer fun. US and Russian fighters used to photo each other or flip the bird while shadowing eachother.

What fun can you do with a drone if you were a shadowing pilot?

Never thought I'd miss the good old Cold War, U.S. versus U.S.S.R. days. At least back then you knew who was who and what was what. We stay on our side, they stay on theirs, let the cloak and dagger guys have it out with each other. I was never really worried about the Soviets ever launching nukes on us. At least the Soviets knew that a nuclear war with the U.S. was suicide for both sides and too much at stake. Now we've got these rogue groups with nothing to loose.

@CT, How can you say that we are the most aggressive nation in the world? That we show no restraint. Let's talk about Russia flying bombers over our territory of Guam less than a month ago! Oh btw, you might ask, were they armed? Why yes they were, with nuclear warheads. What did we do? We escorted them out of the airspace. Hmmm, that doesn't sound like the actions of the most aggressive nation in the world. Idiot.

@NB,We have the largest naval taskforce in this world with many a nuclear missile equipped sub sitting pretty right off most of these foriegn countries coasts with plenty under both ice caps waiting for orders, nothing new here since the cold war ..So what's new, just a game of cat and mouse waiting for someone to sneeze right..Watch DR.Strangelove and How I Learned to Love the Bomb, very entertaining as well as comical but close to factual with the Cuban missile crisis, that's an oldy isn't it!!
