FIRST ON CNN: Iran confronts U.S. drone over Persian Gulf

By Barbara Starr

An Iranian fighter jet targeted an unarmed U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf this week, the Pentagon says.

It was the latest Iranian move aimed at thwarting American military airborne intelligence efforts in the region.

Defense Department spokesman George Little said on Thursday the unmanned MQ-1 drone was conducting routine classified surveillance over international waters on Tuesday when approached by an Iranian F-4.

The two aircraft came within 16 miles of each other.

The American drone was escorted by two U.S. military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Little said, adding that the Iranian jet departed after a verbal warning.

No shots were fired. However, Obama administration officials told CNN that the United States is concerned with Iranian intentions in incidents like this and whether such episodes could unintentionally trigger hostilities.

In December 2011, a highly sensitive U.S. Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on Iran's nuclear program for the CIA was captured by Iran after it crashed. In November, an Iranian warplane fired on a Predator over the Gulf.

After the November incident, the United States told Tehran that it would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with longstanding practice," Little said.

"We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward," he said.

The use of U.S. drones so close to Iran remains a highly sensitive issue for American military intelligence.

The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about Iranian military movements.

@CT, How can you say that we are the most aggressive nation in the world? That we show no restraint. Let's talk about Russia flying bombers over our territory of Guam less than a month ago! Oh btw, you might ask, were they armed? Why yes they were, with nuclear warheads. What did we do? We escorted them out of the airspace. Hmmm, that doesn't sound like the actions of the most aggressive nation in the world. Idiot.

What's this another attempt to start a military conflict that Iran well knows it can't compete..Iran maybe thinking if something militarily happens the US would help them as we've done with many other defeated countries coming to render aid...Or maybe they're going out of their way to incite an international incident and having other countries as China,Russia rushing to their aid as well and warning US as seen as a bully to back away from poor innocent Iran too small a country to abuse but one who might eventually retain nuclear weapons...One never knows what's in the minds of these Iranians and what they might just do to gain attention internationally...Only time and strengthening economic sanctions will tell in the near future!!

If it was international airspace, neither side has a very valid case. And to be fair, If I was Iran I'd be follow that drone too since Amerika likes reigning down missiles on suspected terrorists and the again first responders to the scene of the murder.

Yeah, but Iran is the problem. Glad we are pushing that agenda so we this administration starts yet another unapproved war (but it falls under 'war on terror' which you know, is blanket for unending wars against the boogie man to secure oil).

This administration starts another unapproved war?

Which war did it start that was unapproved? I know of only two wars, the Iraq war and the Afghanistan war. The Afghanistan war was approved by everyone. The Iraq war was condemned by most of the world including the UN and was based off of lies and fabrications.

In Obama's case the only thing remotely close to a war started was Libya. Republicans asked that he enact a no fly zone. McCain and Bachman heavily criticized Obama for not taking action. Then the US met with the UN, NATO, Europe and the Arab League and they ALL agreed to a no fly zone. The next day Republicans decided that the couldn't agree with anything Obama did and decided that it was an unapproved illegal war that they didn't approve of even though they approved of it the day before.

That's why I won't vote Republican. You guys are so full of BS it makes my head spin.

Its completely legal to follow another aircraft or ship in International Air Space or waters. The USSR (now Russia), China, the USA, UK, France etc have spent the last 40 years having attack subs follow Boomers (missle Subs) around as much as they possibly can. Its happens so often, and they get so close they have actually run into each other on rare occassions, though to my knowledge no major harm has been done. Both sides routinely entered each others national waters to do so.

Both the US and Russia routine follow each other Naval formations around all the time, and I sure other countries have as well. The same is true with Aircraft, billions are spent on this annually.

Their was absolutely NOTHING WRONG with Iran shadowing a US Drone, and in fact the Drone Pilot would have just ignored the Iranian planes unless it wanted to sneak into Iranian Airspace, or did not want the Iranians to know what the USA wanted to see.
Sending an unarmed drone into another country's Air Space is not an serious Act of War, of the USSR and USA would have blown the world up a 1000 times in the last 50 years. However, the offended country is certainly free to shoot down the drone if its violates their airspace, and the same applies to manned military aircraft, though its generally considered fair play to force them to land as opposed to blowing them away..
With civilian Aircraft, you are supposed to force them to land, not just blow them away. However, since all sides in the Cold War used planes that appeared civilian to accidently wonder close to something they wanted to observe in other countries National Airspace, countries have good reason to suspect any plane entering their airspace without an invite.

If Rant Paul was commander in chief, to combat terrorist regimes and rogue states, he'd replace drones with American troops. Yes, ranting rambling Rant Paul would rather put American soldiers in harms way. And as long as the likes of Dennis Rodman are vacationing in NK, if Jung-Fat was to unleash a pre-emptive strike against America, our President would be far pressed to use drones to take out Jung-Fat because if Rodman gets taken out in the process, walla, its impeachment hearings on capitol hill. Hey Rant Paul, thanks for empowering the enemy you incompentent right wing idiot.

Why are liberals so angry all the time? First and foremost, liberals aren't responsible for two unfunded wars and the worst economic crisis in America since the Great Depression. And liberals didn't inflate the national deficit nor did liberals set up road blocks to prevent the Obama administration from stabilizing and growing the economy and looking out for our most important asset, the American people. Liberals didn't say its not their job to worry about 47% of the American people. Liberals didn't call for civil war or secession or for the burning of Qurans or for putting Gays and Lesbians in concentration camps, or waging a gender war against women. I can go on all day. Liberals angry? Ha.

The Obama administration is a lot more "big league" than GWB's minor league. For example, we have gotten OBL in just a fraction of the decade it took W's administration to do so. Brought democracy to Libya in a fraction of the decade long time it took to bring so-called democracy to Iraq. And with a fraction of the trillion dollars and countless American lives lost. That is BIG LEAGUE.

There is no way the US would get into a shooting match over a UAV. Being unmanned, they take away the emotion of losing a pilot while on mission. Heck they were built to be more disposable and less inflamatory than a manned aircraft. They are nothing more than a really tall pole with sensors (and missiles) on top. If we begin flying CAP for a UAV, we've really lost our way.

        March 14, 2013 at 3:23 pm |
    • JS

Wrong and wrong. First of all, the drone was in international airspace, thus, Iran would have no claim to self-defense.

More importantly, Iran's Air capabilities are not strong. They have attempted to take down drones before and failed. Not as easy to "blast" or "blow to pieces" as you might think.

      All this is, is posturing.

Drones tend to be used in fluid situations so I'd suspect we were monitoring shipping traffic which would have put us well away from the border. Usually in border situations each side has some claim but Iran was clearly in the wrong here.

Simple solution.Take a slow moving drone, insert a small battlefield nuclear device, weld it into the drone. Then fly it slowly over Iran at about 1200 feet. Iran will capture it, drag it inside, disasseble it and.....pop goes the weasel. This will expose them to all of the nucear testing that they will ever need. And break them from "sucking eggs".

The day we take away that alliance, you will see the USA fall like the fallen angels all around Israel. There is nothing BLIND about our alliance with Israel. The blind alliance is all the so-called countries around Israel. Until God himself touches your heart you won't know that FACT. Good day sir.

Iran doesn't need drones to spy on the U.S. because we let their spies simply walk across the border, or embrace their spies as diplomats.

Why ask a question so off topic? The drone was not flying over their capital city...If Iran had a drone, and it was over the Atlantic 21 miles from our coast, a handful of years after enemy pilots tried to fly a plane into DC, yep, I'll bet we would scramble a fighter jet to get a view. Still don't know what one has to do with the other.

Hey CT, that's EXACTLY what we were told about Iraq's armed forces. Well equipped, well trained, professional, experienced, largest armored force in the world. There was absolutely no way we were going to walk away without significant casualties. Well we decimated their military in 100 days and overran their entire force in 100 hours. Given that the Iranians fought with Iraq for 10 years and couldn't defeat them, what makes think we can't kick the crap out of them as well?

And by the way, Afghanistan was supposed to be America's graveyard. After fighting the Russians to a standstill, there was no way we could defeat the Taliban on their home ground. Well, we proved the world wrong on that one also.

Nobody's going to get thrown under the bus. It will be handled the same way such news always is. There will be an affirmation of our right to fly these drones over international waters (which is perfectly legal, since these are vital shipping lanes that are regularly harassed by pirates). We'll say very little, no one will get criticized or praised publicly, and the head of the CIA will speak privately to the person flying the drone, either to pat him on the back, or kick him in the butt, depending on whether or not the drone was where it was supposed to be.

We cooperate with a number of other nations to patrol these waters, due to their importance to international shipping. Either Iran tried to shoot the drone down, and failed, as they have in the past, or they thought better of it, realizing that by flying these drones over international waters, we're protecting their tankers, just like everybody else's.

Well, when Osama bin Laden was killed, the republicans refused to give our president any credit, so why should Bush get credit for overthrowing Saddam? And, seriously, the military did a fine job in its mission of taking down the Iraqi army. Unfortunately, those at the top (Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, C. Rice) didn't have a clue as to what to do next. The State Department (under Colin Powell) actually had some decent plans, but Cheney didn't want any part of them.

Our soldiers rather be home with their families and protecting our homeland then out playing police man and playing wait to get blown up by a road side bomb. The idiots in charge or this nation building/lose body parts operation, which is the White House and Congress, need to be given that duty and the soldiers can come home where they belong. Our soldiers deserve a leader that understands peace through strength and how to implement that correctly. Until then I advice all our young men and women to stay out of the military unless they like losing their life to make a politician look good.

You are surely smoking the good stuff. If you actually read what happened you will find that it was a civilian airliner properly configured with a non-military transponder. The Vincennes was in Iranian territorial water at the time and thought they were under attack because they had completely misinterpreted what their systems were telling them. For the first 2+ weeks after the incident the Reagan-Bush team spread as much misinformation about it as they could.

        March 14, 2013 at 9:31 pm |
  34. Remember when...

Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian jet airliner shot down by U.S. missiles on 3 July 1988 as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2-203 operated by Iran Air, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, it was destroyed by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49). All 290 onboard including 66 children and 16 crew perished.[1] The incident is ranked ninth among the deadliest disasters in aviation history. It was the highest death toll of any aviation incident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any incident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world.[2] The Vincennes had entered Iranian territorial waters after one of its helicopters drew warning fire from Iranian speedboats operating within Iranian territorial limits[citation needed].

And the South is tired of being reminded about what a few people did with lynchings. Most of those people aren't even alive anymore, and it doesn't give future generations the right to blame or hate on the later generations of those people. I'm not feeling guilty for things I never did!! Get over yourself!!!

On the facts given, neither side of this is out of line. We have the right to fly drones in international airspace and "see what we can see". The Iranians have the right to come take a look at our flights, even in international airspace, so long as they don't interfere with our aircraft.

This sort of game happened almost every day during the Cold War, with far greater stakes at play.

Since Rant Paul's 13 hour escapade on the floor of congress, rougue states like Iran and North Korea and terrorist regimes abroad have adopted a new more advanced strategy to deter and combat America's use of drones on the war on terrorism. Their new strategy is to abduct Americans and use them as human shields. They are fully aware that if President Obama were to strike "non-combative Americans" with drones where ever they might be, rambling ranting Rant Paul would call for impeachment hearings. There are two main reasons drones fly that area. 1) The only major oil/product shipping lanes in the region, and 2) pirates attacking ships are still common. It is more cost effective to fly drones than maned aircraft with less possibility of harm to pilots or equipment. Try and work through that thought pattern.

Fighting amongst ourselves over who stepped over who's chalk line, whose god you must believe in, stealing other countries resources in the name of freedom , breeding hate, and instilling the value of getting your slice of the pie (especially when you've amassed 5000 pies) is a very simple-minded way of living. Iran really needs to build better air defenses if it wants to protect its sovereignty. Taking into account that Iranian air force is using recycled 1970's fighter planes and its air defense is based on recycled 1960's technology, they better be ready if US gets angry and decides to give them a beating.

They should know that US is not Saddam which they fought all through 1980's and at the end lost to him. US took out Saddam regime in less than 3 weeks. Iranians could not even keep their border in place after fighting him for close to 9 years since at then end of that war, thousands of square kilometers of Iranian land remained in the hands of Saddam until US beat the hell out of him in 1990's. Iranians should know that with their state of tech, they are playing with a lion's tail. An angry lion tail.

You're right – that is the intentions of the United States. It is in our best interest to focus on oppressive societies’ and attempt to thwart progression. Nothing brings more pleasure to us Americans than to oppress already oppressed people – because that is what we want.... If you can't tell that I am being sarcastic, nobody can help you. Countries like Iran mean nothing to the United States – other than when they begin to interfere with foreign affairs and make threats to countries that are allies of the United States. The leaders of Iran and other allies to Iranian causes are ideologues that look to denounce freedom of speech, expression, thought, and religion. Countries like Iran use fear as a catalyst to creating anger against the United States. Yoda had it right when it was said that fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, and hate leads to suffering. Ask yourself, who is suffering? Is it the United States or is it Iran? In the eyes of the leaders of Iran, those that oppose are considered enemies. Think about it, I oppose many things that our leaders do in government and I am not thrown in jail or cast as a criminal. I have the freedom to do so in a logical, humane way. Thank you God for allowing me the privilege to live and dream. I wish the same for those that cannot.

So a foreign drone appears in the Gulf of Mexico… America would do nothing to keep it in check? Iran did the right thing and would have been totally justified in shooting it down if it entered Iranian airspace (its likely goal before realizing it was being tailed) I fail to see the news, and I think it would be foolish to consider or ask your readers to consider this in some way hostile on Iran’s part. You have no f-ing perspective.

Our nice little drone was just out on a Sunday drive, enjoying the sun. It certainly wasn't like the hundreds of drones we fly over Iran violating their airspace every day.

And of course, America would NEVER repeat the 'mistake' when we murdered 350 Iranian civilians on a commercial flight over the gulf.

And of course we believe that the US didn't know about that regularly scheduled flight that had flown the same route the same time for the past 10 years.

Just a mistake. Sometimes our little drones go over enemy land ... we're still working on their GPS – must need a small adjustment. Where's the screwdriver?

Be careful what you wish for as other nations may see this as time for the gang up on ol' World Nanny USA. Playing world police has its downside as many could soon find out.

Really, Drones are a terrible decision. I just hope no one else gets drones, but you know it will happen, then the rest of the population will agree that Drones are bad. Unmanned fighting is not good, you need to see before you kill, otherwise it's just a game. No Unmanned fighting, No fighting period.

I don't think their technology will be surpassing ours anytime soon. Innovation is not a strong point for the Chinese, copying is. Historically their aircraft technology has always been one generation behind ours, because they need to get their hands on the equipment and then copy it, by which time we've moved on. And no, I do not believe sequestration will change that.

You should try to see the world the way it really is. "No fighting" is not an option unless we choose to allow our enemies to kill and enslave us. I have the right to make that decision for myself, but not for my children and grandchildren. You need to face the fact that there are people in the world who want us dead, or, at least, compliant with their religion or system of tyrannical government. These people do not care if we are nice or nasty, pleasant or unpleasant. We cannot talk them out of it. We will either become their slaves, die or fight. I choose to fight and I want every weapon available to do it, including drones. If you want to surrender, lose your freedom or die, that is your decision, but you do not speak for me.

Drones aren't really unmanned fighting. They're equivalent to flying a plane but the pilot is not in it. The way you talk it sound like you think it controls itself. If you disagree with war and fighting in general that's fine but to act as though drones are especially bad is stupid. Especially when the drone is just doing recon. Say it was a piloted recon plane and it started being shadowed by an Iranian plane. The US pilot might get scared and attack preemptively. With a drone you can risk not attacking until you see what the other pilot is going to do because the pilot is controlling the vehicle from elsewhere.

We should find a way to take out their leaders. There are plenty of people there who would rather be moving up with the West as compared to staying as they were with the conservative religious clerics. We should just give super incentives to their scientists and doctors to emmigrate (defect?) and come to the US of A. I'm pretty sure even they know that science has advanced their society to a greater extent than religion, which has been a scapegoat for their government to define their rights and their wrongs. I mean there is still that "spy factor" for loyalists that find a way here, but I mean...look at the Chinese! If we could find a way to do that, we win.

The shoot-down of the Iranian civilian airliner, while regrettable, did occur in international airspace. It should also be noted that Iran was not entirely blameless in the incident, having allowed the airliner to follow a flight pattern normally used by Iranian military aircraft, and the airliner did not respond correctly with its IFF (identification friend or foe) transponder.

      March 14, 2013 at 2:15 pm | Reply

Of course it was a military flight pattern. Iran knew exactly what they were doing. Losing a few hundred citizens is nothing to them if they can gain some political edge from it.

According to the Pentagon, that airliner attacked us and our heroic crew shot it down. Later someone tried to blow up the captain in his car, but we wouldn't admit it was Iran. Which makes me wonder about the Pentagon's story, because why would they pass up a chance to blame a country that attacked our heroic men with an airliner?

Wrong. The Russians have been flying nuclear armed bearcats off the coast of Alaska and Guam multiple times in the last few years. We intercept them and escort them away. I would say a nuclear armed bomber is a little more threatening than an unmanned surveillance drone. This stuff happens all of the time. I know it's easy to make America the big bad bully but at least bring your hyperbole just a little more down to earth.

        March 14, 2013 at 2:15 pm |
      • San Diego Steve

GG is correct. You must be a young person who missed the Cold War and failed history in school. The Soviets operated subs and aircraft close to the U.S. all the time. They frequently entered U.S. airspace and territorial waters to test our defenses and intimidate us. We practiced defensive maneuvers and probed their capabilities when responding. When the Cold War heated up at times, there were more incidents. Despite the territorial violations, we never launched nukes against the USSR. These incidents, unless accidents, are complex military and political games. No U.S. commander is going to start a war over them. These things make good stories but they are a lot of "sound and fury signifying nothing."

Intelligent people are aware of history, and know that 9/11 was a justified reaction to America murdering 350 Iranian civilians on a regularly schedule commercial vacation flight. Osama Bin Laden saw the murder, saw a good plot to gain revenge, and being a CIA agent himself, he was smart enough to successfully retaliate.

So go ahead Americans – support our international terrorism, and don't come whining to me when 9/11 happens again.

Goes around comes around – that was what 9/11 was, and it was directly attributed by Bin Laden to US violation of Iranian airspace.

But ... on this blog, it's "America, Right or Wrong". Sounds a lot like civilians in Germany in 1935.

Sly, 9/11 wasn't payback for flight 655. Pan Am 103, 6 months later, was the payback. But we couldn't admit it was Iran, because people would realize the VP had gotten those people killed when he refused to apologize, "no matter what the facts are."

      Sly,

First thing is get out of your parents basement or just go back to downloading porn like a good little moron and leave serious topics to adults. Since you think we as Americans are terrorizing Iran. Let me remind you of a few events from History dimbulb.

November 4th 1979, Iranian citizens INVADED United States soil and attacked United States diplomats at the embassy in Tehran. 52 Americans were held hostage for 444 days by the Iranian Government and militant groups. At times these people were beaten and tortured having their human rights violated routinely.

Iran is the primary financial support of HAMAS and Hezbollah. Both organizations are listed by Interpol and the State Department as TERRORIST organizations. These terrorist organizations are responsible hundreds of deaths of people around the world.

Iranian naval vessels routinely harrass international ships passing through the Straits of Hormuz. The revolutionary guard also targets these ships with land based rockets regularly.

Iran has called for the genocidal destruction of Israel and violates International laws everyday. Are we as Americans innocent? NO. But last time I checked we dont harrass ships or aircraft in INTERNATIONAL WATERS OR AIRSPACE to the extent the Iranians do in the Persian Gulf. If we did, the UN would be crying a river.

So Sly STFU and go back to playing with yourself

Wow are you really this dense? Aircraft A(U.S. Drone) is in international airspace minding its own business and than aircraft B (Iranian manned aircraft) is sent to intercept and shadow aircraft A it sounds to me one aircraft was bothering the other and its clear which aircraft that was.

        Typical american thinking

international airspace is for everyone, not just U.S.... any country would be worried about some drone flying near their airspace, you don't need much intelligence to figure that one out.

sadly it seems your american neurons aren't very functional at the moment

P.D.: I'm not Iranian or muslim, someone living abroad that is tired of hearing this kind of stuff

The point isn't whether international airspace is 'more ours than theirs' but rather that assaulting another country's aircraft when it's not in YOUR airspace is a direct violation of established and observed international law. That applies to EVERY country, neither the US or Iran are exempted. On the flip side, Russian subs are being detected off the East coast in international waters with increasing regularity and everyone KNOWS they are engaging in espionage/ surveillance work, but we're not blowing them to kingdom come, are we?

There was no assault. They shadowed the drone. And probably would have blown it to pieces the second it entered Iranian airspace. And that would have been justified. Not really that complicated. The US would do the same, and then probably attack the country who owned the drone.

That is stated quite clearly in the article, so I'm already well aware of that. I was actually referring to Iranian actions against American aircraft in the past. It probably would have been better if I had clarified that, especially since everyone on the Internet is apparently a literalist. And obviously Iran would blast the drone into next week if it actually infiltrated their territory. I wouldn't blame them; in fact, I can't think of a single country that wouldn't do that if the need arose. Territorial integrity, sovereignty, all that good stuff.
