FIRST ON CNN: Iran confronts U.S. drone over Persian Gulf

By Barbara Starr

An Iranian fighter jet targeted an unarmed U.S. Predator drone over the Persian Gulf this week, the Pentagon says.

It was the latest Iranian move aimed at thwarting American military airborne intelligence efforts in the region.

Defense Department spokesman George Little said on Thursday the unmanned MQ-1 drone was conducting routine classified surveillance over international waters on Tuesday when approached by an Iranian F-4.

The two aircraft came within 16 miles of each other.

The American drone was escorted by two U.S. military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Little said, adding that the Iranian jet departed after a verbal warning.

No shots were fired. However, Obama administration officials told CNN that the United States is concerned with Iranian intentions in incidents like this and whether such episodes could unintentionally trigger hostilities.

In December 2011, a highly sensitive U.S. Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on Iran's nuclear program for the CIA was captured by Iran after it crashed. In November, an Iranian warplane fired on a Predator over the Gulf.

After the November incident, the United States told Tehran that it would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with longstanding practice," Little said.

"We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward," he said.

The use of U.S. drones so close to Iran remains a highly sensitive issue for American military intelligence.

The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about Iranian military movements.

I wonder if it was intentional. Let them have one to recover their jamming and range data. it's too bad the SR-71 isn't around to do a high speed flyover. That might freak em out some. They still fly U2 overhead, so I just wonder how efficiant these drones are for intel gathering as opposed to being a hellfire platform

I'm so glad Mr. Brennan only violates international laws and human rights as a last resort. Our US leaders are creating an environment for war and citizens of this globe are paying the ultimate price while Americans are distracted by the high life. Wake up everybody, before N. Korea becomes the first Country to successfully unleash a nuclear bomb in the US. They are certainly mad enough to do it. It's not like we, in the US, are innocent bystanders.

True but consider the wonderful headlines in Iran and all over the world if that magical self-destruct function had delayed and killed some Iranian soldier or farmer. They want an open conflict with the U.S. because it suits their goals. The Obama Admin. is playing it close to the vest on this whole downed-drone issue and it has kinda just phased out of public spotlight.

We were spying in them and they caught us, what do you think their intentions were? they wanted to take "R2D2" to their base and make it spit out all the info it had in it's memory.May be this is the end of the era of Drones. Somebody has to come up with the counter strategy. There are too many innocent people being killed by the drones or because of their activities.

Um excuse me Russia and china are behind Iran 100%. They said it will be world war 3 if the US even bombs Iran. This is because the last time the US said there was a threat, there wasn't and over a million people died and tens of millions of people are displace because of that criminal action. I think the world is done listening to the US. And can you blame them? People talk about a nuclear weapon for Iran and say the us doesn't threaten people with it.That is funny. No, they just go out and murder anyone opposed to them. They have more allies than you think. So I say to Iran, If you want to, just do it. The world is behind you. Do not ever let the US deprive you of anything that will help your nation. Even if it cost lives. This is what good stand for. Not the US. The US is a police state and involved in alot of the conflicts throughout its time in power. And it is time that the world stands up and says NO MORE! Because when it all goes down the world will have to rid the US just as Britain and Russia's allies did the NAZIS. Hell the US has killed more people than the Nazi did. GO IRAN!!!!!

Some Iranians paddled a canoe across the bay to an island off their coast the island of Trid. The Iranians wanted the Trids to give up their Nuclear Technology. The trids said no! so one by one they lined them up on a cliff and kicked them off. Then they came to Kim Jung Un and they didn't kick him off. Kim said why didn't you kick me off I have been in bed with the Trids on Nuclear Technology for years? They looked at him and said Silly UN,, Kicks are for Trids.

An American fighter jet targeted an unarmed Iranian Predator drone over the Gulf of Mexico this week, the Iranian Military says. It was the latest US move aimed at thwarting Iranian military airborne intelligence efforts in the region.
Iranian Defense Department spokesman Mohammed Ahmed said on Thursday the unmanned MQ-1 drone was conducting routine classified surveillance over international waters on Tuesday when approached by a US F-4. The two aircraft came within 16 miles of each other.
The Iranian drone was escorted by two Iranian military aircraft, which remained over international waters, Ahmed said, adding that the American jet departed after a verbal warning. No shots were fired. However, Ahmadinejad administration officials told CNN that Iran is concerned with US intentions in incidents like this and whether such episodes could unintentionally trigger hostilities.
In December 2011, a highly sensitive Iranian Sentinel drone gathering intelligence on America’s nuclear program for the Iranian Intelligence Agency was captured by the US after it crashed. In November, a US warplane fired on an Iranian Predator over the Gulf of Mexico.
After the November incident, Iran told Washington that it would continue surveillance flights over international waters "consistent with longstanding practice," Ahmed said. "We also communicated that we reserve the right to protect our military assets as well as our forces and will continue to do so going forward," he said.
The use of Iranian drones so close to the US remains a highly sensitive issue for Iranian military intelligence. The aircraft are capable of using sensors to gather information about US military movements.

It's true that countries test one another, but I highly doubt that that U.S. WANTS to go to war with Iran if it can be avoided. The war itself will be very costly in terms of dollars and possibly lives. After the war is over then what? What would the result be? Also, the U.S. would have to pay to fix whatever it 'broke.' That's a pretty hefty bill, especially if the U.S. went to war unilaterally (alone).

I above all would like to avoid a war, however if we attacked Iran it would be limited. Consisting of merely wiping out their ability to wage war. Similar to what happened in Desert Storm. Maybe loose a few aviation assets, but we could probably set their military back decades. It would still be expensive, but no where near the cost of the previous wars and no need for a post stabilization force for a decade either.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty countries since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government Mohammad Mosaddegh and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America, is the only country ever, shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

It also seems that John is rather lethargic in his opinion USA as well as an extremely lopsided (if not complete fiction), view of who killed who in any one conflict.
One thing is completely inaccurate. The USA has not "invaded" 60 countries since WWII.

It's true that F-4s are primarily used in Air to Ground roles, but that doesn't mean that they can't be used for anything else. I would bet that it was one of the closer aircraft that Iran had available at the time. Also, using an F-4 just to show that Iran is 'watching' would not be unheard of, especially if it didn't intent to hunt down the UAV and shoot it anyway (a difficult task with a modern jet). The pilot was probably just told to 'follow' it and see what it was doing.

If we were really as ruthless as you suggest we'd be doing a lot more than observing their Nuke program. In war people do what they want. The Iranians would surveil America with drones if they had the capability, why shouldn't we?

What would the US or their directors in Israel do if Iran sent a drone into their airspace?
What would the US do if Iran sent the Flame, Duqu or stuxnet virus into their LEGAL nuke facilities?
What would the US do if Iran forced sanctions upon the US for engaging in their legal enrichment programs?
This whole arrogance issue will blow up in faces very soon & all of it has nothing to do with nuke research, but with Iran's refusal to sell its gas & oil in US, federal reserve (Jewish directed & profitted) dollars.

      Louiea,

We don't sell aircraft to our CURRENT enemies, but sometimes allies can become enemies over time. Think of it this way...it's kind of a win-win for the U.S. to tell them stripped down versions of our aircraft. Why? Money goes back into U.S. companies and into the overall R&D costs. When the government buys planes, it lowers the individual unit cost a bit.

Also, when we sell them (allies) an export version of an aircraft, we know EXACTLY what the capabilities are since we built it. It's a lot easier to know what the limitations are in that case. The Iranians don't get as good of flying training as the U.S. pilots do. So even if they had U.S. F-15s, the U.S. pilots would still outclass them.

      March 15, 2013 at 11:35 am | Reply

It comes down to the electronic systems in the plane's. They don't stand a chance head to head, but with there russian air defense system we will lose planes and pilots.

A fighter and a drone at 16 miles apart is not alarming. I don't know why the story makes it seem so. At that range, the F-4 pilot would have no idea that there is a drone there (using just his own aircraft sensors).

This is such a common false statement. I wish a real news article would come out to dispel these ideas rather than helping to spread them. Only 68% of the US debt is held publicly. Of that 68% only 46% is held by foreign investors. Of the 68% of the public debt only 8% of that is owned by China. In all, China only owns about 5.5% of the US debt. Nothing even close to being in debt up to our ass to them. While it is true the US economy does rely partly on China's, China's economy is much more heavily reliant on the US economy.

      plus,
Iran was not the cause of 911, Iran wasn't not the cause of killing too many innocent people that day, most terrorists if not all of them came from Saudi Arabia (Osama bin Laden was a saudi and his entire family still live there!!!!) but what did the states do to Saudis? nothing, why? afraid of shutting off the oil supply??

I agree with most of your post. Your reply I think was to the racist that thinks that statistics justify ignorant reply's. He is correct in affirming that minorities do make up the largest percentage of prisons and social programs. If they had decent housing, education and job opportunities that number would be dramatically reduced. I remember seeing a statistic during the recession of 92. As the jobless rate here increased so did crime. And we have a rate of 2.8% and climbing to 3.5 projected. Jobs, self worth, and a faith in the system increases stability and reduces crime. That is just a fact. Something that the fools never seem to realize. Add one more fact. If the minimum wage was raised to the poverty level, all employees received benefits, the rich would actually make more money. Go back and see what Henry Ford did and look at the fortune he made and is still making

Hmm raise minimum wage? You are not very smart. That would make it to where more employers cannot afford to pay for all their employees, thus reducing the amount of employees and giving their responsibilties to other employees, thus increasing unemployment. You very much so remind me of Obama with your poor logic.

You do realize that America supports countries and groups that commit terrorism and organize military coup's and destabilize nations that we feel are in our interest right? To Islamic leaders in power rebels are terrorist just as government officials believe the Boston tea party was a terrorist act! So buy supporting the overthrow of another country we are supporting terrorism in another peoples eyes. Thus the old motto, speak softly and carry a big stick means dont antaginize, and kill everyone if they dare attack (unjustifiably which is not the case today or the last 20 years... or more)

Tom, if you actually believe that some band of sand rebels whom were terrible pilots actually took over a 3 seperate planes with box cutters and flew them into the towers which magically fell to a fire, you need to pull the wool from your eyes. I'm sick of of simple minded sheep believing every bit of propaganda that is put on tv for fools like yourself. Show me one shred of scientific evidence that fire can melt steel and make a building fall like a controlled demolition, show me one video of an actual plane being flown into the pentagon which is one of the most surveilanced areas on the planet earth mind you.. Get real, try to educate yourself and stop regurgitating cnn and fox news, free your mind and think for yourself.

95% of blacks voted for Obama. Who in America is racist now days?

Blacks make up 16% of the US population. Yet they account for 85% of all violent crime in the US, 72% of the prison population, have the highest percentage of people on welfare and have the most children of any race.

99% of blacks are descendants of people brought to America in chains, then sold like property, whipped like dogs, and raped like farm animals by their white owners. They are the latest generation of a long line who have been relegated to 2nd rate educations and 2nd rate jobs with 3rd rate pay scales.

Do you suppose it's possible that some or all of your statistics might be an outgrowth of the above? As for 95% voting for Obama, until YOU can claim a family history like most American blacks, you have no legitimate grounds for criticizing how they chose to cast their votes.

Finally, your racism is so terribly apparent.

Would 'Murcia let Iran fly drones over its land? If China was flying drones over international waters off the New York coast would 'Murica let it go unwarned?

But New York is not the one claiming to wipe other nations off the face of the earth, Iran is.

Lies....these are Zionist lies designed to justify the Israeli government's desire to start a war with Iran, it's Israel placing a timeline for war, not Iran. Please stop spewing your false war mongering to justify your blood lust.....and stop insulting our intellegence.

Why would China fly drones in international waters off NY? They can rent a private plane and fly just about wherever they want in American airspace. And you're a friggin' fool if you don't think that's already happening.
