White House sending Benghazi emails to Senate

By Pam Benson

The White House has agreed to turn over to the Senate Intelligence Committee additional e-mails and intelligence reports related to the lethal attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, according to a congressional source.

The source said some of the materials have already been received by the panel and others "will be provided shortly."

Republican senators have threatened to hold up the nomination of John Brennan as CIA director until they receive e-mails exchanged between the White House and the spy agency concerning public talking points about the deadly attack last September 11.

U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice relied on those talking points to explain the Obama administration's version of events several days after the armed assault. Her televised comments ignited an election-year controversy, fueled by Republicans, over whether the administration was being truthful about the nature of the attack.

Rice said it apparently grew from a demonstration over an anti-Muslim film, but it was later disclosed that it was a terror assault.

U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens was one of four Americans killed.

The CIA's original draft of talking points linked individuals associated with al Qaeda to the attack. But the final version changed the al Qaeda reference to extremists.

Some Republicans have accused the administration of deliberately downplaying the attack to protect the Obama administration in the middle of a presidential election.

The lawmakers have been unsatisfied with what they say is conflicting information from the administration about who was responsible for the change in the talking points although the CIA eventually said it changed them during discussions among various agencies to protect classified information and for legal reasons.

National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said the White House has been talking to the intelligence committee about its Benghazi requests and will continue to do so, but there is nothing to announce at this point.

Vietor noted the executive branch has already provided "10,000 pages of documents, 6 witness hearings, 5 hours of testimony by (Defense Secretary Leon) Panetta, 5 more by(then Secretary of State Hillary) Clinton, (and) answered 40 Benghazi related inquiries."

Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-South Carolina, who is not a member of the intelligence committee, has also criticized the administration's immediate response to the attack. He has demanded more information about action taken by President Barack Obama to help those under siege.

Separately, Democrats on the intelligence panel have also requested the administration turn over additional Justice Department opinions on the use of targeted killings of Americans overseas.

The White House provided two legal opinions from the Office of Legal Counsel a couple of weeks ago, but Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the committee, said there are seven additional OLC opinions the panel should review. But so far, the administration has refused to turn them over.

Feinstein plans to schedule a committee vote on the Brennan nomination when Congress returns next week from its recess and it appears Brennan has enough support.

How quickly the full Senate will move ahead with a final vote depends on whether lawmakers are satisfied with the administration's response to their requests.

Moreover, there is another wrinkle for Brennan.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) has also threatened to hold up his nomination until he gets answers to his question about whether the administration would use targeted killings against Americans at home.

In a written response to the committee last week, Brennan said the administration has "no intention" of killing Americans with drone strikes in the United States.

But Paul said he was not satisfied, writing in a letter to Brennan on Thursday that he will do everything he can to block the nomination until he gets a proper answer.

"The question that I and many others have asked is not whether the administration has or intends to carry out drone strikes inside the United States, but whether it believes it has the authority to do so. This is an important distinction that should not be ignored," Paul wrote.

We open a halfassed so called Embassy we have some heavy guns our few men manning these guns, valiant Americans , our Blood wasted due to arm chair shoulders with a poor sense of judgement The Government works more on covering up BENGHAZI than they did in planing the whole incident. John Brennan does not have the needed leadership qualities to head the CIA Obama is bad enough and birds of a feather flock together. Hillary ranting

SOMEDAY we may have Virtual Ambassadors that we can send into War Zones along with Robots and Drones so that NOBODY gets Killed – at least none of US. Until then – I don't know how you can say this Rocket Attack was different from a Roadside IED killing any soldier.

That is exactly the point. If the United States is going to make it its mission to combat terrorism than it cannot employ the tactics of terrorists. Unfortunately this grievance extends far beyond the use of drones, but that is I think really what people take issue with. The Cold War that saw the governments of Canada and the US turn Orwellian on its people is still fresh in our memory.

Thanks to the guys at SOFREP we got the whole story already from the people who were there and knew what was going on with the black ops missions to recover weapons which ultimately lead up to that night of retaliation. The real Benghazi story is being covered up. Google 20,000 surface to air missiles
Al Qaeda had obtained from the Libyan military 20,000 hand held 55 pound heat seeking surface to air missiles capable of shooting down a civilian airliner from 6 miles away. The Benghazi CIA station was negotiating with Al Qaeda to get them.
The question is: Was Ambassador Stevens lured to Benghazi to help in the negotiations by Al Qaeda, then ambushed?

White House sending more Benghazi rope to GOP Senators with which to hang themselves.

The GOP don't realize this yet, but their Benghazi witch hunt has already blown back, and is damaging their image.....not Obama's.

You have a point, but why would the GOP come across as sour grapes on this issue. It's because of the press coverage!! We have completely lost unbiased reporting in this country. The media slobbered all over Amb. Rice, Hillary, and the President on this issue. It is deplorable.

I take that you meant no pun when you declared "Benghazi is a dead subject"
You have no clue. Ambassador Stevens was lured to Benghazi to meet a "Turkish politician" in hopes of stopping the shipment of 20,000 shoulder fired, heat seeking surface-to-air missiles capable of shooting down a civilian air liner from 6 miles away from being sent to Al Qaeda.
You might note that Stevens was lead into a sealed room by Libyan security guards when Al Qaeda approached the gate. The Libyan security guards then slipped away. None were even wounded in the exchange. The secure area in which Stevens was trapped was then dosed with gasoline and set on fire. Stevens died from smoke inhalation, not a bullet. It was a complete ambush witnessed real-time in the White House situation room.
What the President does not want the public to know is that Al Qaeda now has 20,000 SAM's the size of a set of golf clubs which they will use to shoot down American airliners.
That's why there is a cover up,
This story was reported within days of 9/11. It made both CBS and NBC news, then was squashed. Google 20,000 surface to air missiles Benghazi to pull up archives.

Obama claims to be transparent, yet it has been like pulling teeth to get information about Benghazi & now he's refusing to turn over legal docs about his authority involving drone strikes against American citizens. This should bother every American regardless of party.
As for getting to the bottom of the Benghazi cover-up that is a must. If that were your son serving America & begging for help during an Al Qaeda attack that lasted 8 hrs & no help was sent wouldn't that sicken you? The Sec of Defense said under oath that the troops were ready to deploy & yet they weren't deployed. Only the President could have signed the orders to authorize deploying our military into Libya so why didn't he or if he did, who disobeyed his orders? Why did Obama & Hillary tell the families when their loved ones bodies were brought home that they would get the guy who made the anti-muslim video when both of them knew within hours of the attack that it was an attack by Al Qaeda & never was about a video. Why didn't Obama & Hillary ever call our military once during the 8 hours of the attack to see if they had everything they needed to save our Americans that night? Put yourself in the place of these four families that lost their loved ones. They deserve to know why no attempt was made to save them & they have been waiting 5 months now.

As a conservative I can honestly say that the politicians still driving at the Benghazi incident need to knock it off. It's over. You're wasting time and money. I do however agree with the question of wether the government feels it has the authority to use drones on us. As a conservative I'm surprised more liberals aren't interested in this. You get all up in arms over the patriot act, but the issue of big brother using aerial surveillance and combat against its own ppl is no big deal. How is that possible. I thought u guys were for rights and privacy? When did you decide that was no longer an issue?

The person responsible for the Benghazi incident still being investigated is the president – not the republicans. He sent people out to lie to the American people and he lied himself. It's not going to be over until he answers some hard questions – and that could very well by in front of a grand jury – just like Nixon and Clinton.

    • Grumpy2012

You missed the point. The administration IS covering up the story that they don't want the American public to hear.
The President didn't go to bed or wasn't "in the loop" that night, he was intimately involved in the decisions. At one point, he even declared at a press conference that he had given the orders to do "whatever was necessary" to save Benghazi. If he wasn't in the loop or consulted, how could he have given the order?

Watergate was all about what did the President know and when did he know it. And that was about a two-bit break in of a Democratic campaign office that Nixon had no clue about until months later. This is much more serious and involves national security.

Or the Korean War started by a democrat president Truman and ended with a Republican Eisenhower with a total deaths of 36,516.

This is too much already.. I'm getting sick of this story. If something wrong happened, let's just make things safe so it won't happen again. Let's take better precaution. Don't put in spending cuts in defenss and thats it. What matters is to avoid this from happening again. No one is going to jail o er this, and i'm already tired of people accusing people of a major cover up. To me it sounds like a major misunderstanding. Things could have besn done a lot better, but i bet that everything that was done wrong, was unintentional. Everyone is innocent, and causes careless mistakes. Thats why the best thing to do is to work on avoiding it from happening again. Thats it. No one is covering anything up. I'm gettinv sick of this.

Graham wants to know whether the President picked up the phone and called Benghazi while under attack. If I were under attack, I wouldn't pick up the phone. If someone at Benghazi had time to talk on the phone, he would have been the one picking up the phone. Benghazi did not have enough security. It only had the security the Republican controlled House funded and that House refused to fund more. The 4 deaths at Benghazi were indeed tragic but not as tragic as the 4-5 thousand Americans killed and the hundreds of thousands Iraqis killed because of the lies perpetrated by the neo-con Republicans who controlled President Bush

These emails and all other evidence of that horrific night should have been revealed BEFORE the election. Obama is so insecure with his policies and authority, that he withheld information. We elect our officials to work FOR us. If we don't know what they're doing, how can we make an informed decision. It could have happened that even if Americans knew how incapable and negligent the president was that night, they might have still voted for him – because they're not thinking – that's the problem. They're being brainwashed about contraceptives and a false war on women. There is no war on women. Anyway, what it stunningly reveals is how weak this president is. That is a huge problem for our national security.

Republicans never questioned Bush on the 42 embassy staff that were killed on his watch. Nor did they question the attacks on 911. The planes had no windows, they were our military planes and the whole in the Pentagon was not even close to being large enough for a 757. But they are republicans and they will do any treasonous act to attack a Dem President and double down when it is a Black President.

steve – your comment is the best proof you haven't got even close to an ivy school. Most of them have need based financial aid, and schools like Princeton (and I believe Harvard) even have a no loan policies for the people they admit. Do some research before you show your narrow mindedness.

It's time we held these corrupt politicians accountable for how they are using their power.

It all came in handy, because now his party could easily blame this administration for being in an impossible position.

None of them questioned it because the white house did something about the attacks and didnt try to cover it up or lie to the american people about it. You cans top trying to use that as a justifiable argument, because it serves you no good.

Matt82 let's not forget, Romney's % vote wasn't only due to the ignorance of his voters, but also to how well the Republicans played the Benghazi card just before elections.

If Romney would have won, it would have been the greatest victory of the Benghazi terrorists allied with the Republicans against the American people.

If Republican Congressmen were to get every bit of intelligence and communication from before, during and after the attack, what would they do with it? First of all, they wouldn't read it all. Second of all, they would have their aides pick and choose from the boxes full of papers just the most damning words and phrases, out of context or timeline, relevant or irrelevant, to make the president and his administration look as bad as possible. We "the people" still would not know the truth because Republicans would not tell us the whole truth either. They would tell THEIR heavily edited version of events to serve THEIR political purposes.

    Rudy NYC:

Please provide the quotes to your claim below, I have read the article also, what you are claiming is quite an interesting spin.

" several prominent Republicans, including RNC Chair Preibus, have publicly admitted that the Voter ID laws were an attempt to suppress the vote."

Someday, when you decide to open your mind to growth, you will realize both parties will lie, cheat, and steal to win an election

Rudy pulls that crap all the time. I do enjoy the term "suppress the vote". How is requiring only people that are allowed to vote and only vote once voter suppression? These voters need an ID to cash their welfare checks – right? It is only considered suppression when they are prevented from voting six times like that grimy dirt bag lib in Ohio.

The Republican politicians offered the greatest satisfaction to the Benghazi terrorists and amplified tenfold their terrorist actions – the whole circus of forcing our first rank politicians to testify and wash our diplomatic laundry in public, for the whole world to see, and to embarrass our country forever.

–> probably the most UNPATRIOTIC ACT in the modern history of the United States.

This is made even more evident considering that they did not search for this kind of accountability when Bush/Chaney pushed US into a grotesque and costly war, and made the politicians who opposed their war seem unpatriotic !!!!!

Benghazi is as far as I'm concerned is a dead subject. There's more important matters that congress, senate need to attend to and nothing that's done now can ever bring the people lost there back..Darrell Issa and his committee need to explain his ruling on cutting billions in defense with much of it being cuts in embassy security, tell us why..Wouldn't they have learned after the Reagan debacles in the 80's with 2 embassies ,military barracks bombed and over 300 men, women killed they've gotten more savvy in security but being arrogent Issa never thought just as Bushs debacle at the Twin Trade Towers that anyone would ever again sabotage an American installation or come on American soil, boy were they wrong weren't they!!Now go after Issa and get him to explain his great decision that cost Americans lives and see what he has to say and tell his collegues to let him answer on his own because he made his bed and he should have to sleep in it as well!!You certainly don't hear from McCain,Graham on this matter or Issa decisions do yah, what hypocrites but are typicly republican aren't they!!
