Syrian Scuds slamming Aleppo

From Ivan Watson

A Scud missile slammed into a crowded slum in Syria's largest city overnight, killing at least 50 people and strewing body parts across the neighborhood, opposition activists said Tuesday.

The missile - one of at least eight fired at the ravaged city of Aleppo by government forces since Friday, according to a U.S. official - slammed into the Jabal Badro neighborhood Monday night, the Local Coordination Committees of Syria reported. The blast knocked down seven buildings, leaving residents struggling to dig the mutilated remains of their neighbors out of the rubble, the group said.

"We documented 21 victims by names, but there are completely mutilated bodies and body parts," Mohammad Al-Khateeb, an activist from the AleppoMediaCenter, told CNN. "Nobody is sure about the final number of victims yet."

Forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad started using surface-to-surface missiles against rebel fighters in December, after the rebels began using captured rockets to bring down government aircraft. Most have hit in fields, away from population centers.

Jabal Badro had no rebel presence, "nor any revolutionary activities," Al-Khateeb told CNN. The dead included about 20 children, he said.

"One guy came to the neighborhood, came to look for his family," Al-Khateeb said. "He told us, 'I have 20 family members living in this neighborhood. I can't find any of them.' "

There was no immediate response to the report from government officials. CNN cannot independently verify many claims from Syria, as the government has severely restricted access by international journalists.

But video and photos released by opposition activists showed dozens of men digging through the rubble of what appeared to have been an entire neighborhood consisting of dozens of homes shattered by the blast. The northeastern part of Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial hub, came under attack again Tuesday night from warplanes, not surface-to-surface missiles.

Abu Fares, another activist with the AleppoMediaCenter, said a jet strafed the apartment building he was speaking from. Moments later, CNN reporters heard a whoosh and an explosion that led Fares to end the call so that he could run for cover.

The United Nations says nearly 70,000 people have been killed in Syria since al-Assad launched a crackdown on opposition in March 2011. At least 159 people were killed around the country on Tuesday alone, according to the LCCS, a network of opposition activists.

In Washington, the U.S. official told CNN that Syria has been launching Scuds about twice a day from outside Damascus toward Aleppo. The official could not confirm which Aleppo neighborhoods were hit, however.

The Soviet-era Scud became notorious when Iraq used the medium-range missiles against allied forces and Israel during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. None of the recently launched missiles has struck across the border in Turkey, where the United States, the Netherlands and Germany have deployed Patriot missiles to protect civilians.

The U.S. official said Washington is still watching recent indications that Syria has moved some of its chemical weapons stockpiles. The Obama administration believes those movements are consolidating stockpiles for more secure storage away from opposition strongholds, the official said.

The U.S has Patriot missiles in southern Turkey near Aleppo. Patriot missiles can protect civilians in Aleppo of Scud missiles, but President Obama does not want the protection of civilians.President Obama told al-Assad " Do not kill the Syrian people with chemical weapons, other weapons to kill them like warplanes, tanks and Scud missiles ! " This means that the Obama administration are evil.

    ================================================================================

I wonder how many of these scud missiles were originally from the Iraqi inventory, shipped in the mid-to-late 1990's by Saddam, to the Syrians, rather than reveal their existence in violation of the 1991 ceasefire agreement, to the world, and thus confirming American claims?

Both sides are to blame for this conflict. For the opposition to plea for sympathy because the Syrian government is using SCUDS is laughable because the opposition uses IEDs in populated market areas (both sides are killing civilians). No innocent side on this. War is war, no story here.

I don't support military intervention, but if there was going to be one, I would want it to be an internationally enforced cease fire where all civilians are encouraged or helped to leave and given temporary work visas in various western nations. With all the non-combatants out, we could then let the idiots who choose to stay blow the heck out of each other without the possibility of any civilian casualties. I bet both sides would try to force civilians to stay though, or else most of them would have gotten out already. Clearly they are being used as shields by both sides.

Better to first take a look at other "internationally enforced cease fire"s. Wars always start with such names. Even Hitler started invasion of Poland for defending German Radio station, attacked by polish people, but he was as honest as Americans about, Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya and now Syria.

There is no excuse for firing Scuds at a city. The Scud is a large unguided SSM. Its assets are range and large payload. It is accurate enough to deliver NBC strikes or cluster munitions against a large, stationary, soft, high-value target such as an air base, supply depot or other military instalation. Firing one with just a large high-explosive warhead against a city is sadism. There is no military justification for it. This is the sort of thing which can be prosecuted as a war crime.

Scud missiles have about 300km range and 1km error, they are not cheap and Syrian army doesn't have unlimited supply of those. They are absolutely ineffective against rebels that are hiding among civilians. It would just help propaganda against them rather killing any rebel. Syrian army could use much more cheaper and more effective methods, like mortar (Like the rebels) or artillery or even tanks. They are not that far away from Aleppo.
By the way was there any rebel in that area at all?

Apparently, the main reason the Syrian government forces are using Scud missiles against the rebels is the shortage of other (more conventional) munitions...

      February 20, 2013 at 12:29 pm | Reply
    • Abd

There is another reason for using them: the Scuds cause a lot of distruction, mayhem and a big bang of noise scaring and killing a whole lot of people. That is the purpose of the scuds, that is the purpose of bombing large groups of people waiting in bread lines, that is the reason behind massacres against civilians in Howle, Darayya, and other places. The government's philosophy is: dead people won't fight or support fighters, scared people will leave or agree to anything so they don't get killed. Bombs and indiscriminate massacres achieve both purposes.

Of course, Scuds are bad and really nasty of Assad to have used them. But then, would have been perfectly alright had he used drones in stead.

The U.S has Patriot missiles in southern Turkey near Aleppo. Patriot missiles can protect civilians in Aleppo of Scud missiles, but President Obama does not want the protection of civilians in Aleppo. Obama administration is evi .l

Those Patriot missiles are only for defense of Turkey.
That is the agreement with the Turkish government.

Oh wow.. CNN really believe ,his audience is completely stupid.. and that people in america have absolutely no critical thinking? Lets.. see. in the same report Barbara admits Alqaeda operates in Syria..allegedly the reason why the white house "does not provide weapons to the rebels". in fear those will end in the wrong hands.. but at the same time.. CNN theory is that Assad army ignore the Alqaeda and other armed terrorist that she admit exist in Syria and prefer instead to use their expensive weapons in limited supply against civilians that pose no threat to the government. mmmm.. I challenge anyone to find a single report done by CNN that says Assad forces successfully bombed Alqaeda / or armed rebels hold positions..According to CNN..again and again " Assad army is not fighting Armed Mercenaries ,Alqaeda and other friendly groups to Alqaeda.but instead they use their best weapons again and again and again against unarmed civilians women and children and simply because they ask for freedom? At the same time CNN recent article accuse Assad of what the Pentagon does in guantanamo with its own people..like bradley manning.. torture of prisoners.. but isnt that strange? They kill with scuds civilians...because why would they dare to attack armed rebels and other armed terrorist groups? because they will get mad? or perhaps Syrian Army is afraid to attack the armed gangs..so why they pick the innocents.?

CNN should really stop being so one-sided on the Syrian civil war. I'm not endorsing al-Assad, but this method of reporting is misleading gullible Americans. This isn't news, this is melodramatic antagonism.

MMMMMMM not news huh? wellllll If a missile blew up MY neighborhood it is news. Most people have no clue how traumatic an event like this is. The explosive is designed to kill and maim all living things. Missiles are not just to do property damage.

I read "Syrian Scuds slamming Aleppo". Then "A Scud missile slammed into a crowded slum...". So what is it? Any decent editor worth his salt would recognize the difference between "Scuds" and "A Scud" in the same article. Maybe CNN has farmed out the job of editing to Sri Lanka?

They are just quoting from one man organization of Syrian Observatory of Human Rights in Coventry, UK, run by UK employee Rami Abdulrahman who brings the latest news from Syria right from his apartment . They don't even know what scud missile is. It's just scary enough for propaganda and justifying NATO patriot missiles in Turkey. If they knew what Scud is, they would have known army that has artillery and armored brigades not very far from Aleppo has absolutely no reason to use such missiles, because it's an expensive missile with 300km range and 1km error, and there was no rebel in that area.

  45. Been in SCUD Alley on the Recieving End

While the SCUD may seem old and antiquated to those of us in the USA today, to those in Aleppo it is a terrifying experience. I weathered a number of Iraqi SCUD attacks during the lead up to Operation DESERT STORM; at the time we laughed, but in retrospect, we hunker down and prayed they'd miss us too. I was fortunate, those in Aleppo are not. My prayers are with you on the receiving end.

      From Wiki:

" Twenty-eight members of the Pennsylvania National Guard were killed when one struck a United States Army barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia"

Thanks for the reminder. We all need a little perspective.
