'You can hear the artillery outside the president's office'

The U.S. ambassador to Syria says the Syrian regime is slowly starting to crumble.

Ambassador Robert Ford said in an exclusive interview with CNN's Ivan Watson while touring the Islahiye refugee camp in Turkey that it is a slow process, but the signs are pointing toward decline.

"Members of the regime, little by little, are flaking off," Ford said, noting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's mother had fled the country and is now in the United Arab Emirates.

The former Foreign Ministry spokesman is now a refugee in the United States, Ford said. (Update, 9:11 p.m. - Senior administration officials tell CNN that the ambassador misspoke and that the Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman is not in the U.S.)

How Syria's bloodshed drove a peaceful protester into the battle lines

Ford said it is a slow process, but al-Assad’s government is falling apart.

"You can see, little by little, the inner core is weakening," Ford said. "But again, it's a gradual process."

Ford said when the U.N. envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with al-Assad in December, the closeness of the fighting was evident.

"He told us that you could hear artillery outside the president's office," Ford told Watson. "The fighting is getting that close now to the inner circle itself. And so you can imagine what that does to their own spirits, their own morale."

al-Assad saw the videos of Saddam and Ghaddafi. He saw the trial (now trials) in Egypt where every supporter was guilty prior to the trial starting. He and his supporters need a safe place to exit to, but who will be granting a safe haven? They fight on and try a fast exit by boat or plane at the very end. Could be a couple of years yet.

This should not be a page full of hate. All i see here is hatred for these people. Maybe we should PRAY for those that is being slaughtered and for those that is doing the slaughtering. We all know that this is very wrong but speaking in hatred is the same as acting upon it... I mean no harm to those that do but GOD will judge all. My Lord and Savior Jesus will come and destroy all that is evil... But in the meantime we should pray... For all...

I hope they wipe his entire family off of the face of this planet. I hope that they crucify him to a post, and make his watch all of this happen for the atrocities he has done to his people, the people who have made him wealthy, the people who have served him and his father for decades, the same people he has slaughtered for over a year now.

Not much of a story. Assad's imminent demise has been forecast for months now, and he is still there and his troops and militias are continuing to kill. Some of the opposition are carrying on their own atrocities (not much of a surprise there though considering the butchering being done by Assad and Shabiha) and civilians caught in between are bearing the brunt of the losses. Assad will lose, but the new boss could end up worse than the old boss and I would not want to be an Alawite when that comes to pass.

THE IDEA OF A WEEK LEADER IN A DEMOCRACY IS 100% OFF SET BY THE DEMOCRACY ITSELF i.g. STRONG LEADERS ARE GREAT BUT THOSE QUALITY LEADERS DONT HAPPEN EVERY ELECTION SO THE SYSTEM PICKS UP THE DIFFERENCE WITHOUT THE NEED FOR AN ENTIRELY NEW GOV. EACH TIME THERE IS A NEW PRESIDENT i.e. THE SYSTEM SAYS NEW TOP LEADER EVERY FOUR YEARS WITHOUT THE CHANGE OF THE SYSTEM NOTING THE SYSTEM HAS THE CAPACITY TO ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING LARGE OR SMALL WITHIN REASON SO LONG AS IT IS WRITEN INTO LAW FIRST

But a democratic system i.e. free election insures a leader that is of popular choice. As far as the people are concerned they are the best out of those who vied for government positions. Right. There is no guarantee that their best are good enough.

What is wrong with an Islamist getting elected in a free election? Nothing. It shows majority supports Islamism if it was part of an election promise. Bad to the anti-Islamist.

The islamist come in and try to take a whole nation back to 16th century in countries that have been westernized for a long time either by expansion of communication, media, and internet. They do this by merely imposing so called islamic laws which by today's standards resembles nothing but the worst cases of basic human rights violations. We have seen a deeply rooted example of that in Iran in our recent history.

President Obama used to be a community organizer before he was elected to any public office. What experience he has in the world of politics and foreign policy... None.. He definately like English language and grammer and like to talk. Once he was discovered by the Neocons... a big talent was born to decieve people and run USA. He might be a good man at heart but weak leader as well as dangerous to the world. With pushing USA back away from the world problems, USA had shown ineffectiveness in the world affair the rise of China , Russia and Iran.

The rise of China happened by economical growth fueled by the world manufacturer's out sourcing, taking advantage of cheap labour there. There was no way a minimum wage of $7+/hr. in this country out do the average pays of less than a dollar an hour in China and elsewhere. The Auto industry is a good example of what our so called domestic products are like. Out of every 10 autos dangling on a hook of of a two truck 9 are domestic. These things have nothing to do with Presidents or political parties. There is what we call global economy taking place, it is not going to be a comfortable transition from what we are used to, but all these global changes are going to be a reality like it or not. We all have to learn to live with it.

Assad killed unarmed protestors, once he did this he was no longer a leader just another killer- his head would look good on a big pole for all to see as an example and those that stand with him.

Yep, like others have commented the 'end game' has been predicted as happening for a very long time now..... The west has largely stayed out of this because the rebels are dominated by factions that will surely make everyone wish for the good old bad days when Assad ran the show. This has already been demonstrated in cities taken over by the rebels with the civilians complaining that the rebels are A) fighting among themselves as to who is running things and B) the rebels are operating like mafia who has just taken over things, not giving a squat about the populace. Once and, if, Assad folds up, it is bet that there will be at least two more years of protracted civil war among the factions sorting out who gets to run the whole show. Who knows, maybe Syria will devolve into a Somalia where warlords control various territories.

Did the things go better immediately during the American civil war? Did it go better immediately when WWII happened and the allies attacked the Nazis? The answer is no. It take time a lot of time but you have to do the right thing one at a time. The people have been protesting now under the new government in Egypt. They were not able to do that in Mubarak's time. It is Democracy now. The majority won. Isn't it the case now in USA? Did people go on the street when Obama won or when Bush won? No.

Oh, and don't forget that liberal adventure in Iraq and Afghanistan to create a new order – with all the mess that this type of involvement brings – oh, wait. That was a conservative, republican named Bush. I guess you can't just blame "Liberals" for everything, can you. The world isn't black and white, though some ppeople here would love to have it that way. Less need to consider the details.

If the rebels ever get inside any of the regime's major military bases or inside Damascus, what would stop Assad from using his chemical weapons? He would have nothing to lose by using them.

AL -SAAD believes syria belongs to him , just like dear leader in north korea, surely al saad must realize that syria belongs to the syrian people, look what he is doeing destroying the whole country , killing his own peopel, while the western powers huddle in the UN , there is far more to this mess than meets the eye, as we are all well aware that for years syria has been a conduit pipeline for hot cargo, terrorists, and forwarding money from iran and other arab nations to terrorists world wide, thinking that he could engage with arab support in other country,s such as afghanistan and live peacefull himself in his own country, i think what is happening here is al saad is sitting on a massive amount of arab gold , stored there by other arab , african , rogue and renegate dictators, i think western country,s are sitting watching him self destruct before he try,s to make a run like kadaffi, he was content in liveing lavishly while his people struggled to live in poverty, the news said his mother left to go live in the U.A. E., i do not read that as a feeling of security, i think the syrian cartoonist that drew him hitching a ride with kaddaffi was probably right,

One could also argue that he is defending " his country" from a takeover by Islamist militants ( terrorists). Depends which side you're on.

I am grateful America has not shed blood or treasure in this civil war. It has nothing to do with us. Obama was wise to keep a distance. Those who blame the USA are jumping to conclusions and assumptions. Syria and their government did this to themselves.

This is very simplistic analysis, Syria is going to destabilze the whole world. Possiblity of world war III. Your president Obama and his beloved advisors are blind not to stop it early and let it escalate to this degree. What do you expect from a coummunity organizer... he has no clue about any thing he is just a parot who report good speach that has been written for him to say by the NEOCON and people who hate USA.

Follow the way of Jesus Christ, who came from heaven and went back to heaven.

He did not kill but Died for others' sins.

Joh 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Joh 3:36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him."

you've been saying this for at least a year.....as if your wishing for it to happen.....its sad that even if you ignore recent history, its obvious that the US and other countries have decided to destabilize syria or attempt to and then blame the current regime for it all. then they will replace the current government with a puppet government, declare that democracy and freedom has been won by the people and their will be immense and uncessary human suffering for years to come.

ASSAD thugs had destroyed churches and forced thousands of Assyrian to leave Syria after they dried Al khabor river and cut their resources of income. What Assad has done in Lebanon against christians is a vivide example of atrocity and murderous act. We will never forget the assasination of free christians activist and leaders who stood up against the Syrian occupation. We will never forget what Assad thugs did in Zehli, ashrafia and southern lebanon where christians seeked shelter from Israel.

So funny, so true. All I can say is, Blah, blah, blah, blah. How many times do we have to hear about this so-called "end game by the rebels to end the Syrian regime? Its been almost over for months, seems like years now. Even if it does end in the rebel's favor, is that necessarily a good thing? No, look what happened in Egypt, now the Muslim Brotherhood is in charge. Mubarak was doing just fine before. Look at Libya, Gaddafi is gone, then what happens? The terrororists are able to roam free and are gaining control as is evedent by the fatal attack on our embassy. When are we going to learn that sometimes things are just better left alone and change isn't always a good thing? Our brand of democracy isn't for everybody, and apparantly just can't work everywhere.

Rest assured that when al-Assad is driven out, the new bunch of ji-had-ists will be even more fierce in dealing with the citizens. What a complete mess, I don't even understand why the Western nations would choose to support either side, with the exception of attempting to minimize the civilian losses.

We're fortunate to have the opportunity to peacefully air our differences – imagine waking up in a place like Damascus every day.

This is revolution... go and read the history of the French and Russian revolutions. Revolution has to go into phases. Always there are opportunistics who try to steal the gain.. but in the long run it will achieve it's goals. Liberating Arabs from hand of Dictators who hijaked their liberty and stole their resources is the first step. Fanatics will never be appreciated they will be overcome by the will of people if they seek the pass of changes and that what is going in Egypt.

Tony: this is revolution.... If YOU have ever bothered to read the history of the French and Russian revolutions you would probably did not talk about that so lightly! Any revolutionists deserve a worm place in hell as well as fools (liberals) who support them for whatever reason! Shoot them and hang them: that is what they ask for!
