The top terror takedowns of 2012

By Wes Bruer, CNN

One of the most wanted terrorists in Yemen. A son of the Haqqani Network founder. A man whose capture was worth $5 million to the FBI: The United States and its allies took out some of these key terror leaders throughout 2012.

Take a look at those top leaders and more who were killed or indicted in the past year:

1. Abu Yahya al-Libi
Al-Libi was second in command of al Qaeda under Ayman al-Zawahiri and a senior leader of the terror group’s external operations against the West. Al-Libi was also an Islamic scholar who appeared in many recruitment videos. The U.S. State Department offered a $1 million reward for his capture. He was killed on June 4 in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan.

2. Fahd Mohammed Ahmed al-Quso
A senior al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula operative, al-Quso was wanted for his role in the USS Cole bombing in 2000, which killed 17 U.S. sailors. The U.S. State Department had offered a $5 million reward for his capture. Al-Quso was killed on May 6 in a U.S. drone strike in Shabwa province, Yemen.

3. Badr Mansoor
Described as the most senior Pakistani in al Qaeda, Mansoor was the predecessor of Ilyas Kashmiri and one of the Americans' main targets. U.S. officials said he was a coordinator for the Taliban and al Qaeda’s shura council. Reports say Mansoor was killed on February 9 in a U.S. missile strike in Miranshah, Pakistan.

4. Badruddin Haqqani
Haqqani was a commander in the Taliban-aligned Haqqani Network and son of the group's founder. He was responsible for many high profile attacks in Afghanistan including assaults on the U.S. Embassy and Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011. The U.S. State Department had designated him a terrorist under an executive order. Haqqani was killed in a U.S. drone strike in North Waziristan, Pakistan, in August 2012.

5. Abu Usman Adil
Adil was emir of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, or IMU - an ally of al Qaeda and the Taliban - and raised the terror group’s profile in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The IMU has claimed credit for numerous suicide attacks in Afghanistan since Adil became the leader. The IMU announced Adil was killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan in April.

6. Sakhr al-Taifi
Al-Taifi was the second highest al Qaeda leader in Afghanistan. The Saudi national commanded foreign insurgents and directed attacks against coalition forces. He frequently traveled between Pakistan and Afghanistan to carry out orders from al Qaeda senior leaders. Al-Taifi was killed on May 27 in a joint Afghan and coalition security operation in Kunar province, Afghanistan.

7. Zulkifli bin Hir
Zulkifli bin Hir was a member of the central command of Jemaah Islamiyah, the al Qaeda aligned terror group based in Southeast Asia. Bin Hir was also believed to have trained members of the terror group Abu Sayyaf in bomb-making. He was on the FBI’s most wanted list and offered a $5 million reward for his capture. Bin Hir was killed on February 2 in a Philippine airstrike in Sulu province, Philippines.

8. Aslam Awan
A senior al Qaeda external operations planner, Awan plotted attacks against the West. Although not well known to the public, he had been tracked by the intelligence community for some time. Awan was killed on January 10 in a U.S. drone strike in Miranshah, Pakistan.

9. Adis Medunjanin
Medunjanin was an al Qaeda operative tasked by senior external operations leaders in Pakistan to blow up the New York subway. The Bosnian national was a co-conspirator with terror suspect Najibullah Zazi and was just days away from carrying out his plot before authorities stopped it. Medunjanin was charged with conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction, among other charges, and was sentenced to life in prison on November 16.

10. Sheikh Khalid bin Abdel Rehman
A senior leader and prominent religious figure in al Qaeda. The Kuwaiti national is believed to have been the successor of Abu Yahya al Libi, who was killed in a U.S. drone strike in June earlier this year. Rehman was killed on December 6 in a U.S. drone strike in North Waziristan, Pakistan.

Seems like there are lots of followers of the Religion of Peace that have swarmed these forums I clouding a bunch of Pakistan folks. Their agenda is to spread conspiracy theories and hatred against USA and Israel and hoodwink the acts of Islamicists. "Federal reserve" is one of them. Stay alert folks, keep up the good work and make sure the 2013 list eliminates terror once and for all ;)

Who is paying for #9 to spend life in prison? If he lives 40 years, it will cost at lest $1,600,000.00 to keep him behind bars. I don't see the point. Dont we need that cell for someone caught with a bag of weed?

Zoo is a better place to keep him instead of prison. Charge $100 if anyone wants to pee on him. That will pay down the national debt very soon. Let's make some money.

All the terrorists on the top ten list are Muslims. Most of these terrorists were found in Pakistan. Most of them were killed by drones. Kudos to the drone program, which has been amazingly successful and effective in Pakistan.

What you say makes no sense. If you are a member of Al Qaeda, which is a known terrorist organization with a main goal of killing Americans, you ARE a terrorist. That is equivalent to saying if you are a sworn member of La Cosa Nostra but there is no evidence that you whacked anyone yet, you're really not a mobster. If you join Al Qaeda, it must be known that we'll kill you before you get a chance to kill any Americans. Sleep with one eye open f'ers as you spend your life scurrying around like rats in these hell-hole countries. Just wish this list was longer!

    Dear Pakistani Trolls,
Breaking news - Your Pakistani celebrity Mullah Nazir is giving a big going away party. All Pakistani trolls are of course invited. Dress casually, no tuxedos. Oh, Mullah Nazir lost his job. So, BYOB. Have a blast.

While you attend his party, the least we can do is to add his name to our 2013 list. Don't worry, we will take care of it. You have a good time at the party.

    Sincerely,

Excellent job in 2012. Now, the CIA needs to make a new list for 2013. Make a new year resolution for eliminating at least one hundred dirt bags in 2013. Get some drones and go to Pakistan and execute the new year plan. Let the new year better than the previous one. Good luck and god bless.

Yeah right. So all science, technology, math etc comes from Pakistan. What have you been smoking buddy? Pakistan never existed until 60 years ago. The only thing it gave us was terrorism, madarassas, Al-queda training camps and a safe haven for Bin Laden...we returned the "gifts" with drone strikes ;)

Muslims believe in these urban legends that they have been the origin of all science, technology, medicine etc. One guy told me that all science, math and other info everyone knows and needs to know is in the Koran. No doubt yall have been indoctrinated by mullas. I have read the whole Koran and there is nothing as such in there. Random stuff which was already in Christian and Jewish texts plus a bunch of hate verses against idolators, Jews and Christians. And no, I am no religion wing-nut. I havent been to the church in years and consider myself a spiritual but non-religious person.

10 gone. A million or so more to go. Unlike what some people want you to believe, the terrorists are not a very small minority. Yes, all Muslims cant be classified as terrorists, but there is a significant number, way more than what many people perceive. This can be ascertained by the number of people involved in violence during the Bengazi episode, worldwide Mohammed movie protests, Qu'ran burning violent protests etc etc etc. In any of these incidents, you can see that the perpetrators of the violence arent 5 or 10 people but thousands of hordes of criminals that subscribe to a certain ideology.

U know what wahabism is? It's the official religion of your friends Saudis. This 52 virgins, kill the non-believer, etc. is their interpretation of Islamic tradition and the Holy Quran.
All these terrorists "the 52-virginisers" are funded by a Gulf state who on turn received riyal dollar from Saudi Arabia.

Of course not. The Koran specifically says 72 virgins, not 52 as you two claim. You two weren't even paying attention when pretending to read the Koran. Certain tribes in Indonesia and Pakistan would prosecute you for blasphemy if you say only 52 virgins instead of 72. Shame on you two.

        January 3, 2013 at 12:19 am |
      • Fawad

@Justin, M Khan is absolutely right. Wahabism is the absolute rigid and wrong interpretation of Islam. Its either their way or the death since the wahabis/salafis consider themselves to be the REFORMERS and you have to choice to be reformed – join them – or die. Al Qaida, Taliban and all the others associated with them are wahabis/salafis. These are facts. As far as 72 virgins if you could quote the chapter and verse number from the Quran where it promises 72 virgins for killing the innocent then as Allah/God my witness i will leave Islam. Fair enough and if you cannot well then apologize and admit that you are lying and fabricating. By the way i have read the entire Quran, have you?

        January 3, 2013 at 2:25 pm |
      • steve

so what difference did it make 52 or 72 islam is a religion of the stone age, it should not be in the modern world today period. Saudi Arabia was a friend of the pakistanis, they built all the mosques and the madrassas, please read some history before you make some stupid comments. Saudi funded Islam, is what you guys beleived, now it is pay back time dude ..

This is top terror "takedown" list. We, fortunately, have not reached the point where we kill domestic citizens accused of terrorism, we just arrest them. So we could certainly come up with a top "arrest" list. Other than that, you point is completely invalid.

Other than these Islamic terrorist we got a bigger problem -The Organization of Islamic Cooperation which are trying to wage civilization jihad/Stealth Jihad – One of their agenda in the UN is trying to silent the world by urging the UN to pass a blasphemy law. Other than that OIC has try evade discussion regarding Human Rights Violation and discrimination of religious minorities in Muslim Countries while urging the UN member to demonize Israel(especially when Israel need to defend themselves)

Bin Laden was put to sleep in 2011 while he was hiding in Pakistan. Since then why do we still continue to find so many more terrorists in Pakistan? Usage of drones is the perfect strategy to deal with Pakistanis who continue to hide so many terrorists.

The only reason Pakistan is our "friend" is Afghanistan is a land locked country and we need to cross Pakistan's airspace to get from our aircraft carriers to there. Thus we pay off Pakistan for the use and at the same time fund both sides of the war

Meddling in others way of life? That is all al-qaeda does, meddle in the lives of others to inflict their violence on unwilling populations. The problem with this war is it is about religion. And we as Americans are too politically correct to say that the fundamentals taught by this sect (al-qaeda) is wrong. When we say that we target al-qaeda, people at home and abroad think that we are targeting Muslims at a whole. Islam is not a bad religion, but the Islam practiced by this sect is evil, wrong and a twisted outlook on an otherwise decent religion. Stop thinking that we target all Muslims and realize that we target those who are evil-doers, who are all (coincidentally) Muslim in name only.

Because the Paki government is sort of not-for-not-against us. Doing that will mean Taliban will gain strength and civil war will happen and India wont allow that, cause Pakistan has nukes. Nukes in a rogue Taliban government hands could start WW3 at least in Asia with at least 100 mio ppl dead when the mushroom clouds final death count has been counted(radiation over time). So the short version, India will fight that and Pakistan will be even worse, regardless.

    (1) 10 out of 10 terrorists in the top ten list were Muslims
    (2) 8 out of 10 terrorists were found in Pakistan
    (3) 6 out of 10 terrorists were euthanized by a drone
Conclusion: Using drone strikes in Pakistan has the best chance to reduce the number of Muslim terrorists.

Look at all the countries surrounding that are reeling in TERROR because of this country when it itself is reeling under extremism and poverty and intolerance...... Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan, Nepal, and now Myanmar. The mother of all trouble makers ... yes folks, hold on to your chairs !!! is PAKISTAN !!! IT IS NOT COINCIDENCE !! IT IS BY DESIGN and ITS CULT RELIGION BELEIVER CITIZENS !!! Pakistan cannot stop meddling in the affairs of these fledgling nations...financing terrorists...inciting communal violence, fanning religious intolerance. This already has started backfiring at this filthy nation so let this country explode by itself. It is already an inferno that will be uncontrollable. The conditions are ripe for this to happen as Pakistanis all about terrorism that is threatening its survival in its current geo-political form.

Yeah .. it's Pakistan. But what to do about it except keep up the drone attacks as the most effective weapon we have. Radical Islam needs to be overcome and it's no easy feat given the coupling of the tribe and Allah. Pakistan is a Muslim country and most people are NOT radicals. But the tribes are strong and historically unchallenged in the areas where they rule. Pakistan has not had the will it needs to deal decisively with the tribal regions and since it does not (or until it does), the drones will do the dirty work as surgically as it can be done. There's no joy in killing people, 9/11 shows us what happens when these people become well-led, funded and enabled.

It will be nice when Pakistan, India, the ME, and most of Africa become civilized. I have not witnessed such horrors in Europe or NA. Beheadings, summary executions, stonings...good grief, and then they immigrate to places like Canada with such a cultural lens. No wonder Canada is becoming such a cesspool. Want to travel to South Asia on the cheap? Travel to Brampton Ontario Canada, just west of Toronto. Its no longer Canada but a South Asian enclave.

Wayne, I do agree that we Indians are not as civilized as the west, I'm an Indian settled in the US, I feel ashamed to talk about my country (At least after what happened in Delhi), though one shouldn't forget where he/she comes from. But, I like to be honest, if my dad is a drunkard, I will accept the fact, in the same way, if my country is uncivilized, I accept the fact. Till date, I backed the US in all the issues, I debate with my folks and online communities, my colleague (He is an American) he says, I'm not Indian, though I repeat the fact, he says, Dude you are my buddy American, and I feel I'm an American inside, that is how deeply I'm in love with the country I adopted. I came here on my own with just couple of hundred dollars in my pocket, in less than four years I brought a 7 bedroom house in this country, I'm living American dream, and I proud to tell people what I achieved on my own, because I worked hard for it. My manager, was doing my yearly rounding and said, though I'm not born in the US, I have way better life than more than 70% of Americans, and I try, pray to help whoever in need in this country, white, black, Asian, Hispanic. I'm not boasting myself, but I just want to ask you one question, what is wrong in people from uncivilized countries migrating to the Americas? At least I came here legally and busted my back to get to where I'm, then what is your problem with Asians in Ontario? We move here for better a better life, for our families, for future of our kids and folks like you are not happy with that. You should be ashamed to say what you said, being in the Americas I hate to see what you just said. You think Mexico is Civilized? South America, is more dangerous than Asia to travel, why do you only talk about ME, Asians? There is mess everywhere, no country is perfect in this world. What about German holocaust? Serbian slaughters? Those are European countries and those came from being uncivilized back in days. I do understand your point and I agree with what you said, but what I don't agree is, your comment about Asians immigrating to Canada. If I'm missing something please let me know, what I said here is not personnel. Happy New Year!!

Its funny when USA started to loose in Iraq, they blamed Iran, whey they started to loose in Afghanistan they blame Pakistan, when they started to loose in Vietnam, they blamed Russia, when they started to loose in Korea they blamed China but when they smell victory of course it as all American sweat and blood. They are not from Pakistan and they are not welcomed there. Majority of them are from Arab and African countries. Al Qaidas ideology, leadership, money and main source of manpower is from Saudi Arabia and others Arab countries where some of them follow the wahabi/salafi – an extremely intolerant and right interpretation of Islam – teachings, even a blind monkey knows that by now, sure they have wahabi Pakistanis (TTP) in the organization but the non pakistanis and other foreigners have entered Pakistan illegally and have settled in Tribal areas of Pakistan from where they are killing as many Pakistanis as afghans or other coalition forces because we Pakistanis don't want them there. If you sit behind the cosiness of your laptop and make ignorant comments then at-least know what the heck are you talking about. An average Pakistani hates these ba$tards as much as any other decent person, they have bought us nothing but death and destruction and i hope that they all burn and rott in hell sooner then later regardless of who they are, Pakistanis, Americans, Arabs, Afghans, British, Chechens, Russians, etc, etc. and yes idiots the AlQaida has members from all these countries. We are paying the price of helping USA in their war against Terrorism and this is the thanks we get. Oh by the way all the money that you supposedly give Pakistan, is pocketed by the influential friends of America and those who die every day are average pakistan so i would like to quote a great American singer by switching a few words, " Take your money and shuv it".

Fawad, perhaps you should learn to spell simple first-grade words like "lose", or make coherent sentences, before you start calling others stupid. "Geez do you guys can even read?" Precious.

I don't see how the US is "loosing" in Afghanistan or Iraq. The goal in Iraq was to take out Saddam. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but I do believe he is gone. The goal in Afghanistan was to unseat the Taliban from power in Kabul. They accomplished that in what, 12 hours? Hiding in the mountains and sneaking around blowing up a few people at a time can hardly be considered a victory.

Fawad: Don't feel too hard about Bob and Damien's comments about your spelling. I"m pretty sure neither of them can even spell their names in your language, yet you do a passable job in your efforts in English. As a technical writer and proofreader, it never fails to amuse me when Americans bad mouth foreigners who don't always get English spelling correct, yet aren't even able to speak another language themselves. Happy New Year folks!

Many Americans understand your points and do not make the generalizations about Pakistan or Muslims you see in some of the more ignorant comments to this article. From here, however, it appears the ISI continues to want to play both sides of this war – to the great harm of many Pakistanis – and to the long-term harm of Pakistan. Bin Laden's hiding place is evidence of that behavior. I'd be interested in your opinion of that observation.

@VNov5. I know we have our idiots and you have yours. we have our dummies and your have yours. As far as OBL, i could easily make an argument that Bush knew about the 911 attacks and didn't do anything about it since now it has come out that he did get briefed on imminent attacks. Who knows may be someone did know where he was in Pakistan, no way for an average Pakistani to find out but an average Pakistani is going to pay the price for it while those in power and who amass riches will get richer and richer. I wish one day those – if they exist – would be bought to justice for harming the national interest of Pakistan in such a callous manner.

    Fawad,

You are completely brainwashed by Al Qaeda bogeyman after 9/11 mother of all lies that has cast spell on America and rest of the world. What you call Al Qaeda are the angles of this world and America shoud erect their replicas at Rushmore mountain in their honor. They saved US tax payers trillions of dollars in Star wars, SDI and other huge defence spendng that was earmarked or red menace.

you are as dumb as a lot of people here on this post and your comments are as worthless as the comments of a lot of idiots here. AlQaida/Taliban, Wahabis/Salafism is a murderous and terroristic ideology just like Zionism. Both of them don't have any regards for the lives and properties of common ordinary human beings. Both will kill anyone and they do kill anyone who they consider to be against them. The at will destruction of Gaza and shooting of 14 year old Malala yousefzai are prime examples of the disease and filth that zionism, wahabism and salafism are. You are either a Wahabi yourself and or supporter of them, either way STFU.

The bottom line is that the only way to have peace in the region, eliminate terrorism  and lessen regional tension is split Pakistan into pieces. Give half to Afghanistan to govern and give other half back to India. It has become too irrelevant to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. We have invested a lot of resources in PAKISTAN over the past 6 decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no return on this investment. Instead Pakistan has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the
country. We need to revisit our relationship with Pakistan. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be accepting terrorism and extremism from Pakistan and giving financial or technical handouts.
The thesis is that irrelevant nation need to be taken care of and that will generate tremendous economic demand for western nations in the countries where its parts will be joined and the world will have no worries to manage it.

There was a recent article in FORBES magazine that outlined that out of top 100 CEO's in world, 8 are Indian. So it made me think that if a similar study is carried out about my country PAKISTAN than what the article would be like ?
Something like, OUT OF TOP 100 TERRORISTS IN THIS WORLD, 98 ARE PAKISTANI. lol.

Pakistan, my country is a two face serpent. A source of financing and inspiration for all terrorists in the world the likes of which have attack thousand of innocents everyday across the world. A place where these extremists seek refuge after attacking neighboring countries. Pakistan is a Smithsonian specimen. Like humpty dumpty even USA, NATO and the entire free world are having a tough time holding it together. Living in the shadows of China, defined by India, haunted by
Bangladesh and Balochistan and punctuated by zillion Terror Organizations, Pakistan is struggling to find a meaning for its existence and a place in the new world order. How can it stand up? Certainly not on its feet .....perhaps on its knees to seek redemption for double crossing USA in Afghanistan, for hiding OBL, for looting trillions in name of war on terror, only to reroute them back to zillions of terror organizations across PAKISTAN.

LIPSTICK ON A PIG (Afterall we all Pakistanis love pigs so much): The Story of Pakistan
There is only so much one can do to make a pig look pretty
Slapping some lipstick is the epitomy.
PAKISTAN is mired in sewage and poverty.
      Terrorism Terrorism, Taliban Taliban
Has done nothing but made the people loathe.
Lipstick on a Pig is the Pakistan way
Either nukes will soon blow it away.
Or an implosion can perhaps ease the sway.
Split Pakistan into three parts, give Balochistan to the Baloch’s the tribal and ungoverned part to Afghanistan and give other half to India. This will make it governable and manageable and this will generate tremendous economic demand for western nations, be democratically more efficient and easy to manage,
