Syrian forces began combining chemicals that would be used to make deadly sarin gas for use in weapons to attack rebel and civilian populations, a U.S. official tells CNN.
The United States obtained intelligence over the weekend indicating this development, according to the official who had direct knowledge of the latest information.
The intelligence, the official said, came from multiple sources but declined to provide any more details about how the United states learned of it.
Sarin gas, the source said, could most readily be used to fill artillery shells.
Syrian State TV cited a Foreign Ministry official on Monday as saying the country would never use chemical weapons on its own people.
CNN reported on Sunday that U.S. intelligence is concerned about the Syrian government's intent regarding its vast chemical weapons stockpiles after what one senior American official described as "worrying signs" of activity in "the last few days."
The revelation that the regime of Syria's Bashar al-Assad is mixing chemicals underscores the reason for the increased concern.
"There are concerns the regime may be considering use of chemical weapons" the senior U.S. official told CNN on Sunday.
The official who spoke to CNN on Monday declined to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the information.
The blog Danger Room first reported the news on Monday, noting the activity is taking place in "central Syria."
Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned the United States was prepared to act if Syria used chemical arms, saying that step would cross a red line previously drawn by President Barack Obama.
"I'm not going to telegraph in any specifics what we would do in the event of credible evidence that the Assad regime has resorted to using chemical weapons against their own people. But suffice it to say, we are certainly planning to take action if that eventuality were to occur," Clinton told reporters.
"There is no doubt that there is a line between even the horrors that they have already inflicted on the Syrian people and moving to what would be an internationally condemned step of utilizing their chemical weapons."
Clinton met with the Czech foreign minister and discussed the concerns, she said after the meeting. Clinton said the Czech Republic has extensive expertise with chemical and biological weapons.
"They have already been consulting about what can be and should be done, both at this time and post the inevitable fall of the Assad regime," Clinton said.
Syria is known to store its chemical stockpile, in many instances, separately from the artillery shells, rockets or missiles that would deliver those chemical weapons in an attack.
As rebel fighters continue to make some gains, capturing military assets and territory, U.S. and Middle Eastern intelligence services have been watching for some months for any signs the Syrians would be loading up those weapons with chemical agents.
In recent months, the Obama administration has acknowledged at least two instances of Syrian chemical weapons stockpiles being moved but has said it believes those were efforts to put the material in more secure locations as fighting increased.
"We don't know if there is actual intent," the U.S. official said about the latest observed activities. "This is worrisome. This is a step beyond moving them around."
Syria has had a chemical weapons program for many years with stockpiles of chemical agents, according to a 2012 report to Congress from the Director of National Intelligence. The chemical weapons "can be delivered by aerial bombs, ballistic missiles, and artillery rockets."
The country still depends on "foreign sources for key elements" of its program, including precursor chemicals, the DNI report from February stated, but has the infrastructure to support developing biological weapons.

It doesn't matter who we try to help in these countries that are ruled by Muslims. Both sides seem to want to kill anyone who do not follow there faith, (I know all Muslims don't feel that way, but it seems that the majority of them do). We help them overthrow there government, and it is just replaced by more Muslims that want to kill Americans. The world, including our government, seems to think we have the resources to help all these other countries. If we did, we wouldn't have to keep borrowing trillions of dollars to do it. They always show all these civilians dying. Most of these civilians are the fighters in plain civilian clothes, and they fight from civilian homes and neighborhoods, so of course there are going to be women and children getting hurt. Maybe some of the men who die are not fighting, but you can't tell that when they don't were uniforms, where even a kid or a women could walk by you in plain clothes and then blow you and themselves up. They do it to each other, and then they do it to are soldiers after we help them, all with money we have to borrow. Then we just give them more borrowed money, and then chant, kill Americans. We should stay out of it unless we are being attacked. They should be paying us to help them, because we don't have the money to help. With all the debt we have, we are more broke then they are when we can't even pay for our loans.

Upon carefully examining this video and checking with the vast network of activists that make up our nationwide team, we found out this video to be fake, which is reminiscent of how the Syrian state TV reporter was seen on TV placing shopping bags near victims’ bodies in previous car bombings that Assad blamed on the opposition. It was obvious, yet we wanted to double-check. In the staged video, 10 fighters lying face down are pleading with members of Jabhat al-Nusra begging that they are “sunnis” not “peaceful” as the captions read. The captions were apparently done by people who did not have a good command of Arabic. The name of Jabhat al-Nusra is thrown in and linked to al-Qaeda in a way we have not seen before. The soldiers keep begging they are “sunnis” and the fighter with the camera makes sure that that is on tape as well as flashing the Deir Ezzor plates to stir up sectarianism and conflict between different groups and cities. What’s really sad is that Assad has tried these tactics hundreds of times and they always failed.

Sarin is a horrible way to die. It is basically an insecticide. It was discovered by the Germans before WWII researching stronger pesticided. Spray ants with raid and watch the convulsions. Now scale that up. It is not fast like being blown up. And if you do somehow survive you suffer permanent neurological damage.

By the way Syria's Assad has already crossed a line of sorts forcing US to back pedal a bit. The original warning to Assad was "that there would be enormous consequences if we start seeing movement on the chemical weapons front or the use of chemical weapons."

The Syrians will justify the use of chemical weapons by saying they are not using them against their own people because the rebels are foreign terrorists fighting in the Syrian country.

The world (i.e., useless UN) will use strongly worded statements against Syria if chemical warfare is used. That's all that would be done. I think Assad knows that.
..and President Obama has absolutely no credibility when it comes to making threats against Syria if they choose to use the chemical weapons. Just like he has no credibility when it comes to stopping Iran from building a nuke. Directly attacking a unit armed with chemical weapons may do almost as much damage to civilians as the weapons if they were employed, depending on where the strike is made and with what. NATO or other regional powers may want to consider cratering the roads leading from the weapons depots, if only to slow them down, act as a warning or give Assad a chance to sit back and think twice before he unleashes such a horror.

We did not invade Iraq for using chemical weapons. They had used tem on Kurds previously, and we did nothing. The only reason we invaded Iraq was a misguided attempt to refashion the ME, on invented stories about WMD. If Syria uses these weapons, I would still not be in favor of invasion. Perhaps targeted bombing of their chemical facilities in conjunction with international cooperation would be in order.
