U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned on Monday the United States was prepared to act if Syria used chemical arms as new concerns surfaced about those weapons, although Syria said it had no intention of using them on its own people.
Speaking after meetings in Prague, Clinton reiterated that such a move by the regime of Syria's Bashar al-Assad would cross a red line previously drawn by President Barack Obama.
"I'm not going to telegraph in any specifics what we would do in the event of credible evidence that the Assad regime has resorted to using chemical weapons against their own people. But suffice it to say, we are certainly planning to take action if that eventuality were to occur," Clinton told reporters.
"There is no doubt that there is a line between even the horrors that they have already inflicted on the Syrian people and moving to what would be an internationally condemned step of utilizing their chemical weapons."
Clinton met with the Czech foreign minister and discussed the concerns, she said after the meeting. Clinton said the Czech Republic has extensive expertise with chemical and biological weapons.

"They have already been consulting about what can be and should be done, both at this time and post the inevitable fall of the Assad regime," Clinton said.
U.S. intelligence is concerned about the Syrian government's intent regarding its vast chemical weapons stockpiles after what one senior U.S. official described as "worrying signs" of activity in "the last few days."
"There are concerns the regime may be considering use of chemical weapons" the official told CNN on Sunday.
But the official stressed that the Obama administration has not come to a final conclusion about Syria's intent.
"This isn't just about movement, but about potential intent to make certain chemical weapons ready for use."
The official admitted it is not entirely clear to the United States what the Syrian government is up to, or if this latest development was ordered specifically by the Assad regime.
The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information discussed, declined to specify the exact intelligence that the United States has gathered in the past few days.
The New York Times first reported the concern on Sunday.
Syrian State TV cited a Foreign Ministry official on Monday as saying the country would never use chemical weapons on its own people.
Syria is known to store its chemical stockpile, in many instances, separately from the artillery shells, rockets or missiles that would deliver those chemical weapons in an attack.
As rebel fighters continue to make some gains, capturing military assets and territory, U.S. and Middle Eastern intelligence services have been watching for some months for any signs the Syrians would be loading up those weapons with chemical agents.
In recent months, the Obama administration has acknowledged at least two instances of Syrian chemical weapons stockpiles being moved but has said it believes those were efforts to put the material in more secure locations as fighting increased.
"We don't know if there is actual intent," the U.S. official said about the latest observed activities. "This is worrisome. This is a step beyond moving them around."

Armed Forces Kill Scores of al-Qaeda Terrorists in Damascus Countryside
Units of the Armed Forces on Sunday killed scores of al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists in Zamalka, Daraya and al-Shifoniyeh in Damascus Countryside.
An official source told SANA reporter that a unit of the Armed Forces killed tens of terrorists in al-Shifoniyeh , including one of the most dangerous terrorists, Abu Ali Kheibeh.
The source added that army units clashed with terrorist groups near the fire department and al-Zaiytoun roundabout in Daraya, killing and injuring many of their members.
It said a number of terrorists were killed in Zamalka in the eastern Ghouta, including Abdel-Hamid Shalhoub, Mohammad Srour and Abdo al-Tunisi.
Dozens of Terrorists, Snipers Eliminated, DShK-Equipped Cars, Motorcycles Destroyed, Bases for Launching Missiles Dismantled
An army unit on Monday morning destroyed 6 pickups fitted with medium and heavy machineguns and a number of motorcycles were used by al-Qaeda linked- Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists in Muhmpel town in Idleb countryside.
SANA correspondent quoted a source in the province as saying that the operation resulted in the killing of a number of terrorists and the injury of several others while the rest fled to the surrounding forests and mountains. The army units are still pursuing them.
The reporter pointed out that another army unit destroyed several gatherings for al-Qaeda terrorists who were blocking roads, looting and sabotaging private and public properties in Binish, Taftanaz, T'uom, Deir Sunbul, Sarge in Idleb countryside.
Heavy losses were inflicted upon the terrorists where a number of them were killed and injured.
A unit of the Armed Forces, in cooperation with the security and law-enforcement forces at the Interior Ministry, inflicted heavy losses upon terrorist groups on Idleb-Harem road.
A source at the Interior Ministry stressed that pursuit operations resulted in the killing of scores of terrorists and the injury of many others.
Snipers Killed in Daraya, Damascus Countryside
A unit of the Armed Forces clashed with an armed terrorist group from al-Qaeda-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra near the Cultural Center in Daraya city in Damascus Countryside.
An official source told SANA reporter said that the clashes resulted in killing a number of terrorist snipers and injuring others, in addition to seizing their machineguns and sniper rifles.
Terrorist Attack on al-Zabadani Police Command Building Repelled
Members of the police command in al-Zabadani area in Damascus Countryside confronted terrorist groups which attempted to attack the directorate.
A source at the Interior Ministry said that the policemen repelled the terrorist attack, no casualties among their ranks were reported.
Terrorists Killed in Homs, Clashes between Two Terrorist Groups over Dividing Loots
Units of the Armed Forces clashed with terrorist groups which attempted to attack two checkpoints for law-enforcement forces in al-Mukhtariyeh and Souq al-Ghanam neighborhoods in Homs City, inflicting heavy losses upon them.
A source in the province told SANA reporter that the Armed Forces repelled attack attempt carried out by Jabhat al-Nusra terrorists against the law-enforcement forces in the aforementioned areas, killing and injuring many of them while the rest fled away.
The source added that another army unit destroyed a terrorists' hideout in Housh Kfar Nan in the countryside of al-Rastan, killing a number of terrorists and injuring others.
The wanted terrorist Mohammad Suleiman Mansour was identified among the dead.
In al-Rastan, the source said that the clashes between two terrorist groups as they disputed over dividing loots caused the killing and the injury of many of their members.
Terrorist Fadl Saad Tlas, Mohammad Qasem Tlas, Alaa Mohammad Tlas, Badr Tlas and Khaled Mohammaf Bahbouh were identified among the dead.
The source said that two passengers were injured as terrorist snipers opened fire on a bus carrying passengers on Damascus – Aleppo highway near Talbeiseh area early in the morning.
Three Leaders of Terrorist Groups Killed, Four Bases for Launching Missiles Dismantled on Homs-Hama Road
An army unit killed all members of an armed terrorist group which attempted to attack citizens and the checkpoints for law-enforcement forces in Aqraba town in the countryside of Hama.
An official source told SANA reporter that three leaders of the so called "al-Farouq Battalions" affiliated to al-Qaeda were killed.
The source added that the army dismantled four bases for launching missiles set up by terrorists on Homs-Hama road to target residential areas...

Russia Voices Concern over Deployment of Patriot Missiles on Turkish-Syrian Borders
Press Attaché of the Russian Presidency, Dmitry Peskov, said that weapons and combatants are being transported to Syria through Turkey, voicing Russia's concern for various reasons over the deployment of Patriot missiles on the Turkish-Syrian borders, saying that this doesn't help stabilize the deteriorating situation in the region.
In a statement on the sideline of the Istanbul meetings between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday, Peskov said that Russia's position on the crisis in Syria is consistent and transparent, stating that it's not right to support one side since this won't help resolve the situation; rather active help to one side will escalate conflict.
He noted that talks between Russia and Turkey will deal with many issues, noting that there are many serious contradictions in viewpoints between the two countries on international levels.
Peskov said that talks will deal with the Syrian situation and it's not unlikely that President Putin will discuss the issue of the detainment of the Syrian civilian airplane by Turkish authorities.
Russian Foreign Ministry: Moscow Intends to Receive Number of Syrian Opposition Delegation Before End of 2012
Special Envoy of the Russian President to the Middle East, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov announced on Monday that Moscow intends to receive a number of delegations from the Syrian opposition before the end of 2012.
Russia Today website quoted Bogdanov as saying that a number of Syrian opposition delegations are expected to visit Moscow soon, and that Russian officials will hold talks with them and urge them to unite on constructive basis and the Geneva declaration, expecting that this would happen before New Year's Eve.
He pointed out that Russia always called for uniting the Syrian opposition on constructive basis, noting that there are forces within this opposition that support a political resolution, yet many reject dialogue and call for military methods.
Bogdanov said that Russia disagrees with rejecting dialogue and calling for military methods, and that it doesn't support unifying the opposition on such basis as this would continue bloodshed and escalate the situation in Syria.
He also stated that Syria is witnessing more militarization of the conflict, as extremist opposition groups still receive large amounts of weapons, including very dangerous weapons such as portable anti-aircraft Stinger missiles.
Bogdanov said that the militarization of the conflict in Syria is moving at full force which is a cause of concern for Russia as this doesn't help efforts to calm the situation and deal with all opposition groups to reach an immediate and full ceasefire.

This is a civil war, or, economic hitman created war, I feel it is nobodies business besides the actual citizens of Syria to sort out their business.
I doubt Assad would use them against Israel. Any response that Israel would mount would probably start with using Assad's air force for target practice, the last time that happened in 1982 his father lost 1/3 of his air force in a little over a day. The Syrian air force is one of his most effective assets against the rebels, he loses that, it could be game over. I don't think he'll risk it.
HE might gamble that if he uses those weapons internally, on his own people and can keep the effects from drifting into Turkey, Israel or Iraq that the world will respond with 'sound and fury' but no more concrete action than we've seen already(i.e. nothing). Perhaps some more sanctions but as long as he still got Iran writing him checks and Russia and China's backing in the UN he can probably ride them out. He has examples to draw on. Iraq used them in 1988 against the Kurds and against Iran; there was much condemnation but no action.
Chemical weapons are incredibly destructive but very tricky. Unless they're applied carefully and your own troops are ready and equipped to deal with them you could do as much damage to your own forces as you do to your enemy.
Assad is mostly responsible for the deaths of 42,000 people, why would anybody ever doubt he would use the chemical weapons? If this screwball tries to fire them over at Israel, expect Damascus to be gone.

Syria recieved thier chemical weapon via a train , which came from Iraq , before the second Gulf war . Iraq had chemical weapons all along , and gave them free to Syria , as long as Syria didnt attack Iraq when Saddam Hussain was prepareing for the American invasion . Saddam want those weapons out of his country so rebels wouldnt use them against his regime .

Look up the different gasses, look at pictures of what Mustard Gas did in WWI. Now imagine a container of it being brought to the USA and dispursed in NYC,or any major city, Subways, or even Washington DC. You are talking about mass deaths and uninhabitable areas for long periods of time. These agents must be watched carefully becasue no one wants to distroy them since they work so good. Look at what Sadam did to his own people, killing thousands with gas.

We would prefer the Syrian Regime use chemical (or) Bio-logical weapons first as grounds for a "AUMF" resolution so there would be reason for some sort of intervention or prevention. We know it sounds bad however it seems that acting before a incident doesn't please the world anymore but rather let a few thousand more die as a example. However it seems the very same people over there have been crossing borders and firing on NATO soldiers so that is just as unfavorable as watching the innocent suffer.

This is bad news no matter what. If Syrian Regime uses chemical weapons, Western powers will be lambasted for not doing anything and thousands will die. If Syrian Regime collapses, or the rebels get their hands on it during the civil war, these weapons will be in the hands of unknowns and now jihadist. What was once a 16-month non-violent revolution has turned into a bloody civil war infused with islamic jihadists from around the world exploiting the situation. And rebels need every fighter they can, so they aren't complaining.
Seems like they're getting desperate enough to do it. Hopefully the people on the ground will disobey/desert before they go that far, but it seems like a good part of their military can be relied upon to follow orders. And Assad clearly feels he has nothing to lose at this point.
What a mess.
It would be a good time for our president and other world leaders to get in front of the cameras and explain exactly what the consequences will be if Assad uses chemical weapons. This could be Obama's Cuban Missile moment if he chooses to take it.
If things start getting tough for Assad it's a sure thing that these weapons will be used. For Assad what's not to like about gassing people. It's cheap and efficient. And it achieves the goal of making those attacked suffer. Chemical and biological warfare is a Muslim dream weapon, cheap to deliver, impossible to defend against.
