China lands first jet on aircraft carrier

By the CNN Wire Staff

China announced Sunday that it had landed a fighter jet on the deck of an aircraft carrier for the first time, but it may be years before the ship is fully operational.

China's "first generation multi-purpose carrier-borne fighter jet," known as the J-15, successfully completed its first landing on the Liaoning, an aircraft carrier China built using an abandoned Soviet hull, according to China's official news agency Xinhua.

The J-15's capabilities are comparable to the Russian Su-33 jet and the U.S. F-18, Xinhua reported. The Chinese-designed jet can "carry multi-type anti-ship, air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles, as well as precision-guided bombs, the report said.

The U.S. military, in its latest annual assessment of China's military capability, predicted "it will still take several additional years for China to achieve a minimal level of combat capability for its aircraft carriers."

The Liaoning will be able to carry 30 J-15 fighter planes and will have a crew of 2,000, according to a People's Daily Online report published when it completed its first sea trials in August 2011.

China bought the shell of the carrier, then called the Varyag, from Ukraine in 1998. Its construction was begun under the Soviet military before the breakup of the Soviet Union.

The Pentagon report said another carrier, one made from components made in China, may already be under construction and ready to sail in 2015.

"China likely will build multiple aircraft carriers and associated support ships over the next decade," the U.S. assessment said.

The United States, Britain and Japan launched the first aircraft carriers nearly a century ago. The U.S. Navy, with 11, is the only fleet that currently operates more than one.

China did not developed offensive weapon systems until she was pressured to do so as a result of globalization and the shifting military priorities of Western nations and her overseas interests which needs to be safeguarded against terrorism, piracy and foreign militants undermining national trade relations. Spending is not the problem, pollution, unchecked growth and corruption. Corruption is not part of building socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Hey CLINTON You are the biggest brainless stupid and idiot in the world, you are still dreaming that no one can defeat the enemy of American Indian, back to the time when Soviet collapsed, the enemy of American Indian boasted himself as the unique super power in the world, more than 20 years have gone, how has the enemy of American Indian come? Richer and richer? Stronger and stronger? He got involved deeply in debts, he is empty underneath. Next to Soviet Union is the enemy of American Indian, international community is waiting and seeing how he will end up in hand of China. Once again, congratulations to American Indians, Hawaiians and Guamanian, your land occupier's days are numbered by China.

Hi jonny, Americans are buying a lot of the 'craps' made by the Chinese. You should persuade the Americans, like yourself, that the Chinese products are indeed REAL craps so that they won't buy them. Correct me if I am wrong, please, about 20-30% of goods that Walmart put on the racks are Chinese made.

The F/A-18 is a lemon compared to the SU-33 (and presumably the J-15). The SU-33 outperforms it in almost every performance region of the envelope. It's funny reading the angry anti-China anti-Russia posts.

Freddie, you're stupid, they do not outperform the F-18. Despite your stupid ramblings, all US fighters have something no Russian or Chinese planes have.... That is, better weaponry, we're not going to dog fight these things anymore you moron, we would destroy these planes before we even showed on their radar....

LOL seems you're calling everyone stupid.
I don't know about Chinese weapons but Russian missiles are some of the best in the world. Until recently the R-77 has been better than the AMRAAM. Remember in the 60's they said missiles made dogfighting obsolete and they were wrong. Also the F-22 incorporates all the high performance you say is no longer needed. So take it easy on the trash talking, you're only making yourself look ....stupid.

If Taiwan had submarines, it could mount a credible defense against an amphibious invasion by the Chinese without involving the 6th Fleet. Why not authorize Electric Boat (or Newport News) to build them diesel-electric subs?

It look like British jump jet carrier if so the J15 jet is not even close to a f-18.

    • Alex279

Yes, it is not close to F-18 because it is much better. The Chinese jet takes off completely on the power of its own engines after just 400 feet run without using catapults. F-18 nowhere close to be able to do so. Nor it is close in speed, acceleration, combat radius, agility, turn rate, etc. Fortunately for the US, China cannot produce engines for these jets ...yet - they are coming from Russia. ...but it is still an open question how long this "yet" will last.

Thank Goodness Americans on Wall Street sent all those modern manufacturing plants to China. We certainly wouldn't want 1.2Billion Chinese under armed once their military buildup reaches whatever goal they have set. Wal-Mart should feel proud what those former American jobs have been able to produce for the Chinese.

Alternately, war is less likely to occur between a producer nation and it's main customer. Too much to lose on both sides. "Engage them in commerce not battle!" is a good methodology for peace.

This is definitely true, however... Did you notice the recent court battle between Apple and Samsung? Of course, Apple won in US courts and Samsung was ordered to pay a huge fine for its "blatant patent infringement". A similar, but with somewhat lesser publicity outcome happened in Korean court, except this time the winner is Samsung.

What is the most peculiar about this trade war between Apple and Samsung is that while the war was started by Apple, it turn out that ABSOLUTELY ALL modern-day Apple products are made almost entirely of Samsung components without opportunity to replace them. Literally, every LCD panel (including retina), everty touch screed in every Ipad, every NAND memory chip in every Ipod, or every memory chip in every solid-state hard drive in every iMac or ultrabook is made by Samsung. With no exclusion. Samsung can technologically shutdown Apple at any moment it wishes by simply cutting off supplies. Yet, lawsuits are still filed.

..show backing? ...not accurate? What is not accurate here? Or yes, I forgot to mention that Apple A5, A5X, and the latest A6 processors for iPad are manufactured by Samsung as well (thought are designed by Apple). This is in addition to all the above claims I made, which stand.

sources? Check Wikipedia or Google among many others.

Yes, each of Italy and Spain have two. I also mention that the nine U.S. amphibious assault ships should count, because even though they do not currently serve the role of a traditional aircraft carrier, they have the same capacity to fill the role as the minor aircraft carriers of other nations.

"Do not be vain of a winner, do not be desperate of a loser". You guys are as good as near-sighted, can not see the tomorrow China, can not see the USA is going down to ruin. The more you guys speak ill of China the more China is encouraged and try harder to overtake and finally defeat the USA, the more you guys are proud of the USA the earlier it get itself ruined. Congratulations to American Indians, Hawaiians and Guamanian, Your occupier's days are being numbered by China.

        Joe,
you are stupid. The US has endured through hardships much greater than those we face now, you thinking that China will one day overtake us is hilarious, as this was the exact thing the Soviets said before they fell. The US will lead the world as long as there are those of us willing to fight for her, and believe me, there are. You attack those of us that are Patriotic, well, perhaps that is something you simple-minded freaks don't understand. We are a country of citizens that believe in something greater.... The concepts we hold are proven to light the way to prosperity and we do not fear a country like China, because in a Communist society, free thought is discouraged and invention is thwarted. You will see no new technology, no new war machine that could possibly challenge us because China's way of life does not afford their people the ability to create anything new. We are free-thinkers, and this is why we will continue to reign supreme. Besides you fool... China couldn't even feed it's own people without the imports from the US... Good luck fighting us when you can't even feed your own population.

Well if you checked out Wikipedia you would know that China has been training pilots for aircraft carrier since 2008.
They picked out 50 pilots and built for them an inland aircraft model to practice landing and taking off. Sneaky Brazilians also invited Chinese naval pilots to play on their carrier since 2009 in order to acquire nuclear submarine technology. China also started testing on their carrier jet in 2009. So it should be no surprise that China achieved this milestone only two months after her carrier was commissioned, while it took the Russians 8 years to do the same. All this means that the Chinese carrier will probably become operational 3-4 years ahead of the predictions of our so-called "military analysts".
I think this shows that good planning could save years off programs. I wish I could say the same about out F-35 program. The program head at Lockheed & Martin owes American tax payers $600 billion in my opinion.
