Official: Changes to Benghazi talking points made by intel community

By Pam Benson

The intelligence community - not the White House, State Department or Justice Department - was responsible for the substantive changes made to the talking points distributed for government officials who spoke publicly about the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, the spokesman for the director of national intelligence said Monday.

The unclassified talking points on Libya, developed several days after the the deadly attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, were not substantively changed by any agency outside of the intelligence community, according to the spokesman, Shawn Turner.

Republican criticism of the talking points intensified last Friday following a closed door hearing with former CIA Director David Petraeus.

Rep. Peter King, R-New York, told reporters after the hearing that the original talking parts drafted by the CIA had been changed and it was unclear who was responsible.

"The original talking points were much more specific about al Qaeda involvement and yet final ones just said indications of extremists," King said.

The September 11 attack resulted in the death of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

The unclassified talking points were first developed by the CIA at the request of the House Intelligence Committee, whose members wanted to know what they could say publicly about the Benghazi attack.

Benghazi talking points omitted link to al Qaeda

The initial version included information linking individuals involved in the attack to al Qaeda, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the drafting of the talking points. But when the document was sent to the rest of the intelligence community for review, there was a decision to change "al Qaeda" to "extremists." The official said the change was made for legitimate intelligence and legal reasons, not for political purposes.

"First, the information about individuals linked to al Qaeda was derived from classified sources," the official said. "Second, when links were so tenuous - as they still are - it makes sense to be cautious before pointing fingers so you don't set off a chain of circular and self-reinforcing assumptions. Third, it is important to be careful not to prejudice a criminal investigation in its early stages."

Some Republican members of Congress suggested the change came from within the Obama administration - from the White House, the Justice Department, or another government agency.

Turner, the spokesman for National Intelligence Director James Clapper, said that was not the case.

"The intelligence community made substantive, analytical changes before the talking points were sent to government agency partners for their feedback," Turner said, referring to the White House, Justice Department, State Department, Pentagon and FBI. "There were no substantive changes made to the talking points after they left the intelligence community," he said.

The House Intelligence Committee was not satisfied with Turner's statement.

"The statement released this evening by the DNI's spokesman regarding how the Intelligence Community's talking points were changed gives a new explanation that differs significantly from information provided in testimony to the Committee last week," said committee spokeswoman Susan Phalen. "Chairman Rogers looks forward to discussing this new explanation with Director Clapper as soon as possible to understand how the DNI reached this conclusion and why leaders of the Intelligence Community testified late last week that they were unaware of who changed the talking points."

The White House on Friday said it made only one change, substituting the word "mission" for "consulate."

The FBI requested a change in language which originally stated the U.S. "knew" Islamic extremists participated in the attack. According to a U.S. intelligence official the wording was changed to "there are indications" Islamic extremists participated.

Obama administration continues explanations on Benghazi decision-making

The drumbeat of criticism began early on with Republicans criticizing the Obama administration for publicly saying the attack grew out of a spontaneous protest against an anti Muslim video on the web even though the Republicans claim the administration knew it was a planned terrorist attack.

The harshest criticism has focused on Susan Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, who used the talking points as the basis for comments she made on Sunday talk shows five days after the attack. During her appearances, Rice said a small number of people came to the mission in reaction to demonstrations occurring in Cairo over the anti-Muslim film, but the Benghazi protest was hijacked by armed extremists. She never mentioned terrorists.

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Michigan, said this isn't about parsing words. "There was some policy decisions made based on the narrative that was not consistent with the intelligence that we had. That's my concern," Rogers said last Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

Former CIA Director Petraeus told lawmakers last Friday there were multiple streams of intelligence, some that indicated Ansar al Sharia was behind the attack, according to an official with knowledge of the situation. But other intelligence indicated the violence at the Benghazi mission was inspired by protests in Egypt over the anti Muslim video.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California, told CNN on Monday that Petraeus explained why the talking points were changed.

"Gen. Petraeus made it clear that that change was made to protect classified sources of information, not to spin it, not to politicize it and it wasn't done at the direction of the white house. That really ought to be the end of it, but it isn't. So we have to continue to go around this merry go round, but at a certain point when all the facts point in a certain direction, we're going to have to accept them as they are and move on," Schiff said.

CNN's Dana Bash contributed to this report.

Just as Neoconservative Republicans refused to accept the reality of their defeat at the ballot box, they continue to live in their alternative reality universe of refusing to accept the word of the intelligence community THEY called to testify about this matter. At some point, the Republican Tin Foil Hat Brigade are going to have to accept reality or join the ranks of Orly Taitz and the Birthers.

GOP is still licking it wounds for losing the election and acting out with rage to look for anything they can go after Obama. But they are dummmmb foools and need to grow up and take it and move on. Benghazi is not a issue and trying to forcefully make it makes GOP look stuuupid.

Well listen to your words. I think you are the one that is taking the time to keep conflict and hatred alive. Let me guess your profile. You have low intelligence, are physically weak, a real loud mouth in general, and have a very small pe*nis and cannot satisy a woman. I think that pretty much sums you up. And by the way, Obama is so incompetent he is off traveling overseas in the last hours of our fiscal cliff crisis. Great leader you chose. When the economy goes under, it is on your head!

So if 4 members of your family were murdered, you wouldnt consider it an issue. Thats terrible. and yes that is what you said. You said the death of 4 Americans is a non issue. But when it comes down to it, you dont mean that, you just are doing everything you can to support Obama/trash the republican party, regardless of how stupid it makes you look.

He is Commander in Chief, but 1) Embassies are the responsibility of the State Department, 2) GOP blocked the request to fund additional troops in that Embassy, and 3) Intelligence reports were a mess with multiple explanations and multiple suggestions as to who/what was responsible. The point should be to fix the procedures that led to the mistakes rather than waste time pointing fingers because, ultimately, multiple agencies, including Congress, failed.

It must suck to be with the GOP. Your boy lost an election with an unemployment rate near 8% you not only didn't get the Senate, but lost more seats. You held onto congress, but lost more seats. An now the once proud Senator McCain sounds like a nut job off his meds. God Bless America! OBAMA 2012-2016. Deal with it.

Four Americans are dead because extremists attacked them. We have more than 300 embassies and consulates around a world full of dangerous people. This is an argument about whose talking points were used when. Calling people a disgrace to America because they call you on your political BS is a disgrace to America. Now I'm up on the political high horse. See how easy that is?

The "disgrace" – are Republicans like you who will say anything to try and regain the reins of power that were used to run the country over the cliff financially and reputationally among the internation community.

You lost, your party lost, your platform lost, your candidate lost, your antiquated economic model lost, your greed lost – time to move back under the bridge and suck your thumb until 2014 when the American people will kick all the above to the curb AGAIN !

Ridiculous. Sure, we could have lanched tomahawk missiles or perhaps F-16's and wiped out all of the Lybians involved in the Bengazi incident be they "extremist", terrorists, "Al Qada" or any other label you want to place on them. Very doubtful that any American lives would have been saved but I'm sure you and your tin-foil hat Republican friends would have felt really good about killing the bad guys. And I'm sure you would have blamed Obama when our Embassy in Egypt was overrun by Islamists (again, call them anything you want) in response to our action and placing more American lives in danger. But that's what Republican tin-foil hat types do – propose silly solutions after the fact and blame Obama no matter what he does or does not do.

If you want someone to "blame" so much, why not start with Amb. Stevens? He felt threatened, requested extra security, but stayed on when no extra security was going to come (thanks to Congress). Why didn't he return to our protected embassy in Tripoli?? Seems a foolish choice was made!

Enough with the Republican and Democrat bashing, good LORD!! Being Republican doesn't automatically make someone an ignorant conspiracy theorist anymore than being a Democrat automatically makes someone a lazy government freeloader. The truth is, the majority of people, both Dem and Rep, are pretty moderate and sane. And in my moderate and sane opinion, free from partisan hate spewing, it seems pretty obvious that someone in this administration dropped the ball regarding security in Benghazi, and when you're just seven weeks from election day in the midst of a tight race where you're propping yourself up on the death of Bin Laden and therefore the supposed crippling of Al Qaeda, of course you're going to do anything you can to cover that up, at least until after the election, and I would believe the same had this been a Republican administration.

I'm sure there were definitely still things they were learning about the attack, but the fact is, everyone knew immediately that it was terrorism, including the WH and the director of the CIA, who personally wrote the talking points. I don't care what party you affiliate with, the handling of this situation has been suspect. I'm not shouting for impeachment or looking for an argument, I'm just saying it seems pretty clear to me what happened.

Or you could quit with the armchair investigation and say what EVERYONE else knows, we don't know what happened and given the security impetus, we probably won't for quite some time.

But don't let that stop the speculation on something that makes about as much difference as the muffin I had for breakfast this morning.

I was stating my opinion, which is what I thought this board was designed for. I now see it's nothing more than another forum in which to spew nonsensical hatred and further the divisiveness that is plaguing our nation at the moment. I saw all the harsh and extreme comments being made and I foolishly decided to offer my more moderate two cents. That being said, I have absolutely zero interest in engaging in an argument or the type of juvenile name-calling that so many on this thread are lowering themselves to. We are all adults. Can't we have a difference of opinion without bitterly attacking each other? We all have the same underlying goal: to see America and Americans succeed and prosper. Let's take a deep breath and cherish the fact that we can even voice our opinions without fear. I hope everyone enjoys his or her Thanksgiving.

The threatening emails from David Petraeus’ ex-mistress to a Florida socialite reportedly promised to make the apparent rival “go away” and boasted of her powerful, well-connected friends.

The New York Daily News reports that the messages sent by Paula Broadwell to Jill Kelley were far more sinister than previously reported and were from someone “clearly unhinged,” according to a close friend.

“This wasn’t just a catfight,” the friend told the newspaper. “Any normal person who got emails like that would have immediately called the police.”

Kelley read her the emails when she called, according to the unidentified friend, as she sought advice in the days before the scandal became a staggering public spectacle and led to Petraeus’ resignation as CIA director.

The friend, who declined to be identified, said Kelley saw the emails as death threats, specifically one in which Broadwell vowed to “make you go away.”

      Actually,

1993 WTC Trade Center is bombed – blind cleric Omar is put in jail
1998 U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania bombed
      2000 USS Cole
      Clinton Administration ends.
      2001 WTC destroyed
      Iraq and Afghanistan invaded
Middle East gets the message, Saudis, Libya, Syria, etc crack down on terrorists.
      No more attacks
2008 – Community Reinvestment Act comes home to roost. Bail outs happen, to the tune of 7.7 trillion.
2010 – Inflation in communities markets due to US currency printing press, man sets himself on fire in Tunisa because he can't pay his bills.
2011 – Arab Spring. Bin Laden dream fulfilled. Secular dictators overthrown, Islamic regimes put in place. New Egyptian president requests blind cleric that bombed WTC in 1993 to be released.
2012 – Sept 11. Libya embassy attacked over a movie. CIA director resigns, sent memo to White House stating terror but was revised by the very intel community he lead? Sure why not.

What is the US response going to be to the Libya attack? Nothing. Sure put Rice there. I do give props to Obama for having her back. More than Colin Powell got.

Let do what Clinton did. Nothing, and wait for another attack major attack, or wait for Israel to pummel Iran.

I had one of those oh so wise PhD's in international studies tell me, "Well, they have a mindset in that is in the 1600s" So, you give them a 1600s response, a firm smack in the mouth. No rebuttal. Bush had the guts to do it. Clinton, on the other hand sent a few cruise missiles, missed and blew up a pharmaceutical factory that supposedly had WMD's. Oh but he will send some troops to Croatia when he is up for impeachment. I was 1 of 2000 enlisted that personally booed him off staged for putting us in harms way to cover his Monica problems. The guy lies, gets disbarred, almost gets impeached then gets up at the DNC convention and says, Trust Me. Why does Obama need him anymore? He would have won anyway.

What would I have done? I would have had that embassy guarded with a tank and about 20 marines. Two seals held them off for as long as they could. 60 of them dead vs 4 of ours. I would have seen Arab Spring coming and tried to shape Iraq into a secular democracy like lets say Turkey or Iraq. Obama dropped the ball. The US how has about 5 more Iran's to deal with. That will eventually come home to roost as well.

@CavPilot – I seem to recall that Democrat and Republican congressmen were all convinced of the existence of WMDs precisely because the White House provided false and misleading information. Are you suggesting that someone who believes false intelligence is in collusion with those who provide the false intelligence? This is just another example of the misdirection used by those who want to justify political attacks on this Administration – the question is not whether Democrats believed the false information about WMDs, the question is why Republicans were not outraged when it was discovered that the information causing US to go to war was false – yet seem to think that the changing of some wording on an atrocity that was committed by some other group/country/organization is somehow an impeachable offense.

All of the global media corporations in the world have been in a secret socialist conspiracy to hide the Shining Light of Conservatism for five generations. They do this because they are evil and want good people to suffer. (It used to be a Communist conspiracy, but then the Soviet Union collapsed and overnight it became transformed into a socialist conspiracy. No Conservative apparently noticed the change.)

All of the polls, all of the scientists, all of the PhDs, and all universities have joined in that world-wide socialist conspiracy since 1932. Their goal is persuade voters that Liberalism is good when they know it is evil.

Scientists are all liars. They fake scientific results and poll findings. They have been doing this since FDR was President. They will do anything evil for tenure and government grants. They fake their experiments so the results agree with Liberalism. Sometimes ‘the government’ orders them to produce certain results, like the Global Warming Hoax.

All government statistics have been faked and changed to make “Liberals” in government look good, and they cannot be believed. This is because government is evil and all government employees are evil when a Democrat is in the White House. All government employees lie to make Obama look good.

(Escape Clause: However, if those same government agencies produce statistics that make Conservatives look good, then they can be believed and trusted.)

If it’s from PBS/NBC/ABC/MSNBC/ABC/CNN it’s a lie. They do not print news. They simply try to sway elections by printing false news. They have been doing this since Hitler invaded Poland because they hate America.

God is a Conservative Free-Market Republican. So is Jesus. So is the Holy Ghost. So were the apostles. So were the early followers of Jesus. So was the first Pope. So was Martin Luther.

Mormonism is not Christianity unless the Republican nominee is a Mormon, in which case Mormonism is just another Protestant denomination, like Presbyterians or Baptists.

And by critics you mean Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. CNN has a liberal slant. Fox has a conservative bias. The crazy thing is Fox calls CNN "mainstream media" when Fox News and conservative talk radio heads get the lion's share of the viewers. Figure that one out.

1998 U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania bombed

Nothing.

"Hey Joe, the embassy in Benghazi wants more funds for security. What should we do?"

"Well, Barack Hussein, our goal of course is to encourage Islamic terrorists to kill as many Americans as possible. I don't see how giving the embassy more security will help us meet that goal."

"Just what I was thinking, Joe! You are a terrific vice president. I hear that terrorists are planning a major attack on the embassy there. I'm afraid that if we give them a couple more Marines, some of the terrorists might get hurt. After all, those terrorists have families. I don’t want anything bad to happen to them."

"I couldn't agree more, Hussein. Let’s deny their pleading requests for more security. None of the Conservatives here in Washington will figure out that we're setting up an American ambassador to be snuffed. Those guys are as stupid as a sack of hair."

"Even if they do realize what we did, we'll just lie our way out of it. That's what we've always done and it has always worked before. The only thing that scares me are those brilliant Conservative bloggers on CNN. I hope to Allah those noble patriots don’t catch on to what we’re up to.”

The Republican Goal is still subversion. Republicans intend to gridlock government, make Americans suffer, frighten Americans about the future, and punish Americans until we give in and vote for them.

Essentially, the Republican Party is holding the nation hostage. They are so fanatical that they would rather cause an economic, political, and social collapse of the nation rather than compromise.

Amen to that! The republican party is just useless. They blow everything out of proportion for partisan points. McCain was spewing criticism about not getting information at the same time as he was missing the special meeting to give him the information. For those blaming our President for lack of security, look to the GOP in congress who voted against funding more security for our embassies overseas. Republicans stop overlooking your party's share of the blame in many of our country's problems. You only hear half the story on Fox, the half they want you to hear. They also act outraged over just about everything, thereby inciting outrage in their viewers, who are only getting half the story. It makes you look ignorant. Start getting your news from additional sources, not ultra-conservatives ones.

The problem is simple: Republicans do not understand the meaning of the word 'intelligence'. It was obvious to me, from the start, that this was a terrorist attack, and it was also obvious to me, from the start, that there were certain aspects that were classified and therefore we were not getting the entire story. Since when does the public ever get the entire story right out of the gate? Never, that is when.

However, Republicans want something with which to criticise our President. They are foaming at the mouth to get something to impeach him with. Sorry, Repubs. Not gonna happen. Now go crawl back into your trailers and have another warm beer. The world is better off with you keeping your traps shut.

      Speaking of "Conservatives" and "Intelligence"

LONDON, March 2, 2010 (UPI) - More intelligent children may be more likely to grow up to be liberals, a researcher at the London School of Economics and Political Science suggests.
Satoshi Kanazawa, an evolutionary psychologist, says "evolutionarily novel" preferences and values are those that humans are not biologically designed to have and our ancestors probably did not possess.

In contrast, those that our ancestors had for millions of years are "evolutionarily familiar."
Kanazawa argues that humans are evolutionarily designed to be conservative, caring mostly about their family and friends, and being liberal - caring about an indefinite number of genetically unrelated strangers one has never meet or interacted with - is evolutionarily novel.

Data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health support Kanazawa's hypothesis. Young adults who subjectively identify themselves as "very liberal" have an average IQ of 106 during adolescence while those who identify themselves as "very conservative" have an average IQ of 95 during adolescence, Kanazawa says.

It seems to me CNN and the Republicans in Senate and House need to either say President Obama LIED or they need to accept the explanation. CNN has bias with regards to Benghazi as Anderson Cooper and co. read Ambassador Stevens journal after the State Department said not to–CNN is the one with the problem here–it seems to me Congress should look into any wrong doing with regards to CNN–also what really was going on in Benghazi? What is the CIA doing there? Who are these militias and where did they get their training(IRAQ?). Who are the bad Militias(What affiliations) Is there really a holding cell for militants? Does Libya have a military or are they relying on militias? Where are these answers–enough with the John Mccain( Mccain has been wrong on foreign policy his whole career)

But those things did happen, so you know what you can go do to yourselves. Bush:Obama = most outrageous double standard in history.

To those who say, "Stop blaming Bush" I reply:

You remind me of a spoiled teenager who took the family car on an unauthorized joyride. He got the brake mixed up with the gas pedal and he drove the car through the back wall of the garage, through the neighbor’s fence and it now sits – totally underwater – in the neighbor’s swimming pool.

His father says to the boy, “Look at the mess you made! Do you realize how long it’s going to take to fix all this and do you realize how expensive it’s going to be?”

The teenager replies “Wait a minute! Don’t blame me! This is all YOUR fault for leaving the keys where I could get them. Also, we’re talking about ancient history here. The car is now YOUR problem, not mine! Don’t shake your finger at ME!! What has happened in the past cannot be changed! I know you don't like it, but no one ever said life was going to be fair!”

While the Idiot-in-Chief is out mispronouncing the names of respected world figures the Benghazi scandal continues to unfold. The central question still remains unanswered. For almost two weeks after the Benghazi attack, why did the administration push the notion of this video? We can all get mired in the details of the cover-up but I still don't hear us asking why the cover up? Was it the election? If so didn't the public have a right to know to make an informed decision? Watergate was nothing folks. This was an intent to completely mislead the American public regarding a terrorist attack!!! Think about that people, our government tried to hide a terrorist attack from us! Do you hear that CNN? Or do you just want to cover your ears and hope it goes away. Is that what the media does?

Chicago, showing so much emotions against someone tells certainly a story in itself. But again , I think the real issue here is , why was there a CIA operation under the umbrella of the embassy. Eventhough it has been done like this in many cases before , the CIA – and especially the person in charge- should have carefully judged and prepared for the risks resulting. This is primarily a scandal within the CIA decision making in this should be clarified before the guys there again risk the lifes of others . – Eventually the resignation of our now-former CIA head has a different reson then his affair...

Attention Conservatives: The Benghazi yarn needs some work. It is not a lie with traction, like Death Panels or Liberal Media.

Let's put something about Kenya into it. How about this?

"Guns were smuggled by Fast & Furious through Mexico to Communist Venezuela and then transported by Kenyan Navy Vessels to Benghazi, where the ambassador was selling them to Islamic terrorists. The income from the weapons sales went to finance Planned Parenthood Abortion Clinics.

"It was Obama himself who had the compound burned in an effort to destroy the evidence, which is why Obama refuses to close Guantanamo."

Go with that. I think you'll see that is has a lot more traction.

In fact, Conservatives were delighted and thrilled at the news of the death of the American ambassador during Obama's term. They have since been distorting and embellishing the story as they always do.

On the day of the ambassador’s death, Fox News showed video of Conservatives dancing in the streets of Birmingham, Oklahoma City, and Phoenix. They were chanting, “Hooray for Romney!” and “We’ve got Hussein now!” and “Death to the Kenyan” and “This is almost as good as Death Panels.”

One fact that is not getting nearly enough press:

Paul Ryan and the Republican house cut the EMBASSY SECURITY BUDGET by $300 million. Make a note of that. The request from Benghazi for more security could not be approved because we DIDN'T HAVE THE MONEY. Maybe one of you malcontent Republicans would like to go into your own pockets now to replace this $300 million? I mean, we'd hate for this to happen again, right? We need to protect our people, right? The republicans cut the embassy security budget, right? So.... why don't all you finger pointers dig deep and come up with $300 million for the lives of Americans abroad.

Jon do think these things through before you post?! Even in the years when we had deep cuts in the military, we still redeployed our scarce resources to respond to threats when they presented themselves. The cuts were never an excuse to not respond appropriately.

Even if security was weakened due to cuts (and that is a big if), the response for more security should have been properly vetted and then the appropriate forces should have been redeployed. The fact was this was not done and that is the issues. Americans did not die because of budget cuts, they died because of incompetency.

I seriously doubt if the President was the approving authority for this but he should have been the person who launched an investigation to find out how this could have happened to one of his ambassadors. There is a difference between accountability and responsibility; the President was responsible for finding out the truth of what happened and then someone should have been held accountable for incompetency that lead to the death of US citizens.

To say, in hindsight I might add, that it was a simple solution of moving folks around or reading tea leaves is a clear illustration to just how shallow your thought processes are. Boiling down an incredibly complex situation to satisfy your need for back-alley justice is not something this country is interested in doing any longer.

If the last two beatings weren't enough, all I will offer as a recommendation is that you'd better figure this out or you won't have a party to align with very much longer.

I think the entire discussion about "who said what when , who modified what when" is completely missing the point.
Looking beyond all political talks , what you can identify is the following:
    1) There has been a CIA operation undercover using the embassy as umbrella to support (guide?) the activities against Gaddafi
    2) This has been a civil war environment , therefore the CIA must have known , how much the risk anything for the embassy people – and should have been prepared for any attack
The real scandal here is that no media is pointing to this issue and focuses on identifying the responsible staff for these decisions.
Even though it will not bring live back to the people lost , it should be clarified. But also needs to be taken into account , that US still is loosing brave soldiers in Afganistan (about 20 a month!!), and it seems that evryone is in denial about that.

I have serious problem with the explaination. There is plenty of great source material on how field agents are intensively trained to generate concise reports that communicate the confidence level of the information given. The CIA's job is to generate accurate information not determine policy. What we are being told is that the FBI requested that the public talking points were changed to either contracdict what was probably already known or to mislead supposedly to protect classified sources.

The problem is that once you contradict what you suspect is the truth instead of saying "YOU DONT KNOW" that becomes a policy decision. The reason why the Repubs on the Intelligence Community are up in arms is they understand the process from field agent to analyist. The implication is that the FBI is driving policy which does not make sense. If the release of this information jeapordizd a criminal investigation the classified material stays classified and you say nothing. It does not matter if the public is clamoring for an explaination. Justifying a misleading statement for policy reasons implys someone within the political branch demanded it or the inteligence community broke protocol.

As an asside multiple foreign news organizations were stating that the attack was terrorist based within a week. So I find the explaination of protecting classified sources ridiculous.

It really didn't change that much at all: they weren't exactly sure what happened at first; then they were. Fox News tried to claim they were always sure. The intelligence community just came out and said we were kinda sure, but we weren't completely sure, so we hedged our bets.

        November 20, 2012 at 10:34 am |

        1. If they weren't sure then they should've said we're not sure or we're investigating. Instead they purposefully misled.
        2. It isn't a big Obama conspiracy, but rather a petty Obama campaign cya on terrorism not 'being on the run' that had led to the controversy over the misleading talking points.
        3. There was no good reason to blame a video that by that time all officials knew had nothing to do with attack.

One of those republicans was talking about this policy decision. What policy decisions were made based on that information? There was nothing done in the time since that incident at all. If your only problem with this is that YOU feel that they should have said nothing, then that is an internal one and not worthy of yet another republican hearing/investigation based in political gamesmanship and not on finding out what happened and how to resolve it.

I guess it's the magnitude, the importance and whether there are lies are not. If they lied, why? What possible difference would it make? And how do you know what everyone knew at that moment. You don't. This whole thing is blown WAY out of proportion and has the sour flavor of a witch hunt.

And I seem to remember a president who was very comfortable lying about who was behind an attack. Those lies resulted in the deaths of over 100,000 people including over 4,000 US service personnel.

      Gimme a break. This is s non-story.

There are quite a few double standard experts on here today. You guys need to step back and realize this has happened many times before, but you don't hear the same conspriacies nutbags. I do agree that Obama needs to make sure we have new guidlines implemented for all of our embassies to avoid any future crisis. I don't agree that we blame every situation on the President. He is the man in charge, but let's be realistic.

This the typical straw man argument...I am a republican and I was completely against going into Iraq, there was absolutely no reason for it and I agree that Bush should be held accountable. But two wrongs do not make a right. Bottom line our consulate was attacked on Sovereign ground (US Territory), that is an act of war. I couldn't care less about who changed the talking points and who said what, what I care about is the fact that MULTIPLE times our Ambassador notified the US government of escalating violence in Benghazi and MULTIPLE times called for assistance. The British has the foresight to remove their ambassador from the region, we did not. There were several opportunities to go and rescue the ambassador and others in the compound yet everyone was told to stand down. That is the problem I have, not with who changed the talking points not with who said what but the fact that our embassy was under attack in a region that the government knew for months was unstable and we did nothing to help those 4 men.

This is pretty amusing really. Bush wanted to go into Iraq for weapons to prevent anything worse than what happened on 9/11. The intel he had, from yes, the CIA again said that they had the weapons. In fact, weapons inspectors had a list of weapons that they DID have at one point, but hadn't been allowed back in IRAQ to verify their disposal.
I see the liberals on here defending Obama and saying, see the CIA edited the report, but you don't blame the CIA and intel community for Bush's decisions to invade IRAQ based on that intel.
        DoubleStandard.
Scary thing, is that I doubt the CIA was wrong on either account. Many in there are silent heroes, and scapegoats when things get public. I am sure many would change their tune if they knew all that they did protect us from.

Then you should actually pay attention to the reports. It was reported that they could not deploy in time. As far as who denied the requests, that was handled at the state department.

You may wanna check with republicans as to why we haven't gotten any further and are talking about who said what when.

        November 20, 2012 at 10:51 am |

First of all, it was a consulate, NOT an embassy. So you need to understand what you're talking about before you go criticizing. Second of all, there were ELEVEN attacks against consulates/embassies during the Bush Administration, some involving more than 4 lives lost and where were you criticizing the President then? Where were you calling them out for their lack of foresight in protecting those embassies/consulates? Don't try to pretend like you care about the lives lost here when dozens more have lost their lives in embassies/consulates during the previous administration and you said NOTHING!

Does that sound sane to anyone?

This reminds me of the right-wing e-mails constantly popping up regarding "liberal conspiracies" or "socialist activities". The crazies send them out to all of their friends encouraging people to take action immediately. These get busted by the fact checkers almost immediately and the people who sent them out look like ignorant, paranoid, right-wing morons. Once they realize the e-mail was yet another scam do they do the right thing and send an apology to their friends? Hell no. They either quietly move on to another ridiculous conspiracy or keep sending out the original. Honesty is not a requirement to be a wing-nut. Remember the "birthers"? They still exist in relatively large numbers. Fox News drones...

ANOTHER GOP WITCH HUNT TO DISTRACT YOU FROM THEIR LACK OF VISION AND LEADERSHIP.

The only politically motivated language here is the WITCH-HUNT double-speak being spewed by the GOP-led panel of "concerned" legislators who are a) trying to make a name for themselves and b) simply trying to find a post-election scandal to tar and feather the Dems with.

Far from having learned anything as a result of the election, this "investigation" is a prime example of the GOP applying more of the same activities they've employed for the past four years in an attempt to look good by making the opposition look bad. Do they care about the attack and the deaths...maybe. Do they care about scoring political "points" in the press and the eyes of voters for the mid-term elections – you betcha. Far more so.

Odd to note that they are NOT talking about how the GOP-led committee "investigating" this attack stupidly, carelessly, and ignorantly outed the existence of a CIA base at the embassy. Oops. Must have full disclosure of secret and top secret intel or the committee's investigation isn't satisfied. Morons.

Of course, the intelligence community is never wrong, and anything they report MUST be talked about in exact detail w/o redaction or alteration at a press conference or it's grounds for the GOP to attack...right? Morons.

If you go back and look at the info prior to the Iraq war, the intel community was saying there WASN'T sufficient info of good enough quality to support WMD, too. There's some info that was modified slightly from the original talking points, eh?

Must be nice to have something to stir up so you can distract the media from focusing on the failing of the GOP in the election.

I didn't see an explanation why the American people were LIED to weeks before the election when the Obama administration knew the truth:
SUSAN RICE: It was 'NOT A PRE-PLANNED ATTACK' and it was a 'SPONTANEOUS PROTEST' due to one of many cheap YouTube videos and it coincidentally occurred on the cherish Jihadist anniversary of 9/11.

Now, I understand why amoral liberal Democrats want to sweep this under the carpet. They will insult and bully until they can get people to be quiet. Would they do the same George W Bush? They would have been foaming at the mouth demanding an investigation for the truth weeks before the election. Yes, they truly are unprincipled hypocrites.

The LIES are too big to ignore. Besides all the intelligence, the next day the LIBYAN PRESIDENT said it was a planned attack on the 9/11 anniversary, a cherished date by Jihadists.

Yet, these enemies of the public wish to sweep this all under the rug.

If you read the entire article, you would have seen where General Petreus explains that there were multiple streams of intelligence and some of that intel was pointing to this demonstration being related to the video which sparked the Egyptia protests. What the CIA did was send their talking points to other intelligence communities, such as DIA, where they added and/or changed information. The question that remains is which intelligence community added the remarks about the video. Though this seems like a witchhunt, what needs to be taken from this is that there were too many hands in the pot and everything got messed up. The overall goal of this inquiry is to prevent such mistakes from happening again.

This controversy is 100% trumped up by sore loser republicans, who as usual, would just as soon destroy the country, sabotage our own and obstruct everything and anything in Washington, just to feed their rabid hatred of President Obama. He had nothing to do with how this report was generated, nor did any of his staff. The report was filtered through intelligence per usual and they vetted it for facts and it looks like they got it right. We still don't know exactly who and why they did this or what particular group (if any) was responsible.

There may have been nothing unusual about the way it was handled, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be revised. For instance, the FBI should not be involved in the anything the intelligence community makes as talking points. Also, the CIA shouldn't be sending it's take on intelligence to other intelligence communities for input, rather it should be the other way around. The CIA should have the final take on anything intelligence related. From there it should be given to the White House. There were too many hands in the pot and things got messed up. The procedures need to be fixed so that something like this doesn't happen again or, at least, is hadled better than it was.

People did not know early on what the situation was.

I remember that after the Oklahoma City bombing by Christian terrorists, newspapers were reporting that Islamic terrorists were responsible for the bombing. They reported furthermore that a car containing the criminals was on its way from Oklahoma City to El Paso, where they planned to escape into Mexico.

Why would anyone lie about what happened in Benghazi? There is no political motivation to do so.

      You are incorrect.
There has been testimony that State, Defense, WH situation room etc. watched the attack in real time. There had been warnings of an imminent attack. Those at the mission, including Amb. Stevens on the day he died, were warning the mission could not sustain an attack. They did know what the situation was. They might not have known the exact group(s) responsible, but they knew the situation and they knew it had absolutely nothing to do with that silly video.
It does seem so dumb for the WH to willfully mislead Americans but they did and it had nothing to do with classified information. The campaign did not want anything to get in the way of their meme, Osama is dead and al Qaeda is on the run. That is the lame political reason behind the push to have Americans think the attack was in response to the video.

Only conservatives can not see how a video against islam could incite a riot in islamic areas. What does watching the attack in real time have to do with how it started? Did they have a video crew on site 24/7? Can you tell by watching footage of an attack the reason behind the attack? Did they have al quida (sp) name tags?

You folks are just looking for anything STILL at this point.

        November 20, 2012 at 10:57 am |
      • Mme. B

        Dear Ghostriter-
As a matter of fact, the mission DID have 24/7 video, that is how it was proved (before the Sunday shows) that there was no protest of any sort on 9/11/12. That and testimony of the survivors.
The point isn't the name given to those who attacked the mission. Calling them extremists or terrorists would be fine. All terrorists are not al Qaeda and no one has a problem with WH not identifying the exact group 5 days after the attack.
The point is that the WH DID know WITHOUT A DOUBT that there was NO demonstration of any kind at the Benghazi mission on 9/11/12 and yet for almost 2 weeks they claimed there was.

Listen. To say the White house never knew the real story is sticking your head in the sand. The president knew it was terrorism. They just chose to say it was a spontaneous response to some movie trailer no one ever heard of. Maybe they don't want to talk about it due to national security. That whole place involves CIA activity. Leave those folks out of the lime light, and let them do their jobs.

I must have missed the part about the attack being a result of a spontaneous demonstration about that movie. The only thing I have heard said by Rice was that a demonstration about the movie was infiltrated by armed extremist and those extremist attacked.

You guys have twisted the events so far out of shape it's ridiculous.

Do you realize there was never any demonstration at the Benghazi mission on 9/11/12 at all?
Do you realize the WH knew there was never any demonstration (of any kind about anything) before Obama sent Rice out with the misleading talking points about the video?

        November 20, 2012 at 12:58 pm |
    • Robert

      Jerry,

Did you happen to notice the multiple protests around the world that erupted at the same time? If my memory serves, there were quiet a few around the world. So why do you doubt that there was in fact one of these protests going on which gave a nice cover for these terrorists to strike? The two are not mutually exclusive.

      November 20, 2012 at 9:56 am | Reply
      • Mme. B

You are correct they aren't mutually exclusive. Only in the case of Benghazi by the time Rice went on 5 shows, they had seen the video from the mission before the attack occurred and talked to those at mission and knew for a fact that there was no demonstration, spontaneous or not, on 9/11/12. State, defense and WH all watched the attack in real time too.
So, though there were many demonstrations in the ME/Africa on 9/11 that claimed to be about a video-there was none in Benghazi and all officials knew that for a fact. Any mention of the video in relation to Benghazi was only to mislead.

        November 20, 2012 at 10:16 am |
      • ghostriter

MmeB, what is your point? They also said they had numerous reports of what was going on. And according to this very article, Rice stated a small protest may have provided cover.

But all of that is moot anyway. Republicans are sticking with the "she didn't say terror" bit. I saw nothing in that statement inferring that the attack was due to the video.

        November 20, 2012 at 11:00 am |
      • Mme. B

        Ghostriter-
My point is that it has nothing to do with whether Rice said terror or extremist. No one cares what the word used to describe the attackers was.
My point is that the WH tried to blame something (the video) that had nothing to do with the situation at all. I can say that because there was never any demonstration and they all knew it before Rice was sent out with points blaming said demonstration.

By the way, I'm not accusing Obama and his administration of lying. I'm asking why even come out and blame it on the video, when from the beginning, there were conflicting intelligence reports to that. The compound in Benghazi is on fire.

If Obama had sent in 50 Marines to rescue those Americans, what would Conservatives now be saying if 42 of those Marines were killed and 8 were captured AND the ambassador was killed too? All the Conservative gasbags in America would be screaming that he poured American soldiers down the rathole when he should have been more cautious.

If Obama had sent in 50 Marines and had rescued the ambassador and all Marines came home unharmed, Conservatives would now be saying, “Obama has opened up a third war and now we’ll be mired down in a war in Libya for a decade.

If Obama, following the advice of his generals, decided – as he did – to determine what the situation on the ground was before committing more Americans to the situation, Conservatives would be saying what they are saying right now.

This whole Benghazi thing is about Obama’s Black skin. Conservatives can’t stand darkies.

Excellent post. I have said the same thing about sending in rescuers. We are not deployed in that country for starters. Deploying armed forces in a sovereign nation is very, very dangerous and could have precipitated all sorts of trouble. Secondly, we NEVER deploy our folks into a situation like that on the spur of the moment. Suppose there were 5,000 militia waiting to ambush our response team? Suppose there were a dozen guys waiting to shoot down helicopters if we sent them? These arm chair quarterbacks don't have the common sense to understand the real implications of the situation. There were just a few Americans in danger. We don't put 50 more in grave danger without knowing the situation and having contingency plans. You will NEVER see us send rescue teams into a situation like that on a moments notice, into a foreign country that is at war.

Sore loser republicans. That's all it is.

It is sad when you just write this off as a racist issue. When you have to imput race into a conversation you have no other possible explanation for the issue at hand. Whether you agree or not the real issue here is that four Americans are dead and there are many factors that contributed to it. That is the issue. The other issue is that a U.S. Ambassador in that region with that much lack of security did not want to attact attention which leads me to the other question of why was he out there in the first place. There are many questions which should be answered that will not be answered and this will go down and out like Fast and Furious. Another issue that has left many questions unanswered.
As for the reason why Susan Rice went on those talk shows was very simple to me.. She ran interference for the administration.... If Obama lost she would be out of a job but if he won she would be sure to be the new Secy of State. Thats it plain and simple... which actually makes me feel better to know that she is not that stupid after all.

sflmom, there is no issue here. Some Islamic terrorist killed some Americans in Benghazi. That is the story.

Who were they? We don't know.
Will we catch them? We don't know.

Besides, don't you think it's more appropriate for Conservative women to stick to their housework and let their husbands speak for the family?

sflmom, this stopped being abou t the 4 Americans long ago. This is about why the administration didn't use the word terror. No more, no less. And Fast and Furious was NEVER about Agent Terry. He was not killed because of those guns. He was killed because he was a border agent. We have seen what the investigations and hearings republicans have held the past 4 years. Throw in Solyndra and you have strike 3.

No one died as a result of any intelligence, truthful or not. Your "lied and died" claim is pure manure, aimed at stirring controversy where there is none, never should have been any. These people died FIRST, before any report. Secondly, the more we hear, the more we can see that the report was correct. There still doesn't appear to be any verifiable link to Al Qaeda or any clear motive for the attack. The truth is, we have killed 500,000 people over there in the past decade or so. We are likely to be attacked by any number of people or organizations in retribution for family members, children, women, old people... you know, that is to be expected and it will continue as long as we are operating in that part of the world.

Wise up. This post election, sore loser, clap trap.

Your are the one that seems to be sore.... I beg to differ slightly with your analogy though... If the intelligence coming from Libya and in particular this Ambassador was that they needed more security and that they would not survive a direct attack then to a degree it is at fault for not listening and securing the Ambassador.
Susan Rice who is a U.N. Ambassador was not the appropiate person to be going to the talk shows and answering questions. tjat should have been done by a state dept offical.
Like I stated previously she was doing it to run interference so that she would get the Secy of State position... the sad thing is that four Americans are dead and someone dropped the ball... but like everything else in Washington this also will never be known..

Too many people are unwilling to step outside their tiny ideological boxes to research and filter news in an unbiased manner, and then make intelligent comments. Too many just want to spew small-minded hatred, little barbs like Fireball's comments. These people are either too young, too inexperienced, or simply too ignorant to understand the nature of conflict zones and news coming from them. When 241 servicemen were killed in Beirut in 1983 during Reagan's administration, it took months to get a clear understanding of the events. The inexperienced think that just because you can get instant bank statements and buy on anything Amazon that news from a conflict zone should arrive the same way. It doesn't. And Peter King, Lindsey Graham, and John McCain owe apologies to all of us.

Your boy Rob-money made a statement, trying to make political hay, before it was even known that the Ambassador was dead. Why didn't he just say he didn't know instead of spouting off stuff? Why did he make any statement at all?

Under George W. Bush, there were 12 attacks on U.S. diplomatic facilities, and 53 people were killed. The Democrats did not try to make a scandal out of those attacks. This clearly shows that the Republicans are totally unrepentant for their obstruction and mean-spiritedness. They will continue to run the country into the ground because they cannot stand it that an intelligent black man beat the pants off of them twice. They want the country to suffer for electing Barack Obama again, and they have just about enough power to accomplish that. It will destroy not only the country, but their party also.

Susan Rice is being made the "fall guy" for the intelligence communities' and maybe even the State Department's faults. She went out and said what they all told her to say.The CIA didn't want all of the details disclosed. She may not have even known all of the facts.

You lost the election and this Benghazi crap is already falling off the media radar. No investigation, no impeachment, it's over. The only thing you get is four more years of Bronco Bama. McCain and Graham are playing a political game to try to discredit the president and his possible nominee. They are off base.McCain has been hypocritical and even has tried to make this into a Watergate moment. If they are sincere, why aren't they demanding that the CIA account for their part, and the GOP in Congress also, who denied the White House request for more money for security which is the real issue.

Stevens' and the others deaths were tragic, but they didn't hold the Bush administration accountable for its intelligence failures, and amped up "facts" presented by Condoleeza Rice and Colin Powell that took us to war..Why not? All of the focus is on Susan Rice just to deny the president a victory.

Not at all. It's why they came out blaming one thing, when they so clearly had conflicting information from the get go.

The point is this, if there was conflicting information, they should have treated it as such, and not select the explination that suits them at the time.

I think most Americans, left or right, would have accepted that they were initially unsure of the cause, and that they were investigating, had they never come out and blamed the youtube video, which they so clearly had conflicting evidence against from the start.

You mean the funding that had ZERO affect on the security in Benghazi?
You mean the bill that 149 democrats passed?

You guys are so quick to point to republicans passing the reduced spending for embassy's and consulates, but always fail to give all the information. Like the fact that the previous bill went through Sept 30, 2012....after the Benghazi attack. You ignore the fact that Mrs. Lamb flat out said that Financing, Personel, and Assests were NOT an issue for security to Benghazi. You also ignore the facts that there are failsafes for security for embassy's and consulates which including gaining extra funding and personel from the overall military budget and the Marines. You also ignore the fact that the funding for embassys and consulates had increased well over 10 times the amount they received within the last decade. It was a bipartisan bill that passed on reduced funding, yet you can only find a way to blame republicans? Get real

I can tell Graham played in the HS Band. You just want to keep this charade going on as long as possible, over a word here and there. Extremist or Terrorist – that's what the whole discussion comes down to. That's not quite the same as, "What the meaning of is – is". Get a case. You can't blame Kenya or faked birth certificates anymore. You lost. Four more years. Get over it. Be a man – get some. Quit the hating. Quit the silly crap you're trying to turn into what? An impeachment?? Are you kidding?? Fight the war – not the White House. That war's already over. Think about the children? What will leave them if their republican example is "blame the referees; The scoreboard operator cheated; Their uniforms were distracting; the replacement refs didn't know the rules"> Accept it – you lost. What difference to you or America what the excuse is, Obama did not cause it. And if you ask the bad guys, I think they believe someone in a tent somewhere will pay for it. I agree, but it wasn't only the administration that changed anything and, according to them, they only changed the Consolate to the mission, which really isn't that big of a deal. The problem here is that you had the FBI and other intelligence communities making changes to the statement prior to the White House receiving it. There were too many hands in the pot and that is what you get when too many people get involved in something like this. Everything should have been coordinated through the CIA and then the final copy sent to the White House. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.

@ cwh..... DId you read the article? The Obama Administration gave the American people information that was from the intelligence community......The intelligence community made substantive, analytical changes before the talking points were sent to the White House......In other words, the video came about from what the intelligence community provided.......You cannot call out the Administration on information that they received from the intelligence community.....Furthermore, any common sense person knows that you have to proceed with caution with any kind of intelligence especially in the early stages.....The Administration handled it as best they could and my hope is that they bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for this tragedy.

Its funny you bring up Obamacare. Just today hospitals all over are announcing layoffs in the thousands. Companies are changing the way they operate because of obamacare, and not for the better.....for the worse!! There's no doubt the healthcare system need fixing, but scrapping the entire system was not, and is not the answer. People will continue to lose their jobs over this thing!!!

Actually the US military got Bin Ladin, just because it happened on Obama's watch, doesn't make him the mastermind of killing Bin Ladin. Fact is, whomever was president, likely would have made the same decision. It's one I applaud Obama for making, but lets be realistic on how it came about.

The Iraq war was ending anyway, on a timeline already set up by Bush. So how exactly does Obama get credit for that?
By the way, are you aware that more Americans have died in Afghanistan under Obama's watch, than under Bush's? What fantastic policy ::rolls eyes::

  94. TheDougler

I think you guys are missing the entire point in this. The problem is not changing the terms Al Qaeda to Extremists, no matter who changed it. The problem is between 2 days and 2 weeks after the incident, everyone in the administration was calling the attack solely a response to a youtube video, that mind you only roughly 300 people had seen prior to the actual attack. The fact remains, that even if the intelligence community didn't want to name names, or organizations, they did know that it was a terrorist attack, and not the result of a youtube video.
If there was in fact conflicting intelligence, then why didn't the administration treat it as such??? Why didn't they come out and basically state that? Why not say "we believe it could be a result of a couple of issues, of which we are investigating" ???? Instead of being so definitive that it was a youtube video!!!
And this guy remains jailed because of this. Obama could pardon the guy at any time an free him of an unjustified lock up.

So tell me again what the youtube video had to do with Benghazi ????

Again, my point is not that they had multiple intelligence streams, which gave them conflicting information. My point is, why come out so definitively naming the video, when they had evidence that conflicted that? But I guess you didn't read that in my statements, because it doesn't suit your argument.

Ummm... You do realize that there were actual widespread demonstrations throughout the middle east in response to that youtube video and that people died as a result, right? Nah, I guess your probably don't.

Good use of the Conservative "Selective Memory" ....... In Real Life, there were uprisings all over the Middle East over that film.

I think you nail most of the questions on the head. My big question is why did Obama continue that line of publicity for two weeks when it was obvious to even the most biased news organizations that it was dreadfully wrong? I mean the American people who have been understanding, even expecting, if Obama had told the truth and told us it was another 9/11 terrorist attack by Al Qaeda. I doubt he would have lost one vote over it. So why? It is the strangeness of it that I would like to know about.

While I think what the White House did was senseless and tragic, the film-maker is NOT jailed because of this. This led to his parole officer finding out he was in violation of his parole. Since he had stolen a lot of money through fraud he was told that he could use NO alias and limited internet access. And none of this was in violation of any U.S. law as he was a convicted felon on parole. He knew the rules and broke them anyway. I agree that the White House was completely wrong in the way they handled this, but let's not start some silly crusade for a convicted felon who knowingly violated his parole rules. He has never been charged at all for the actual making of the film in anyway, shape or form.

Thank you Dougler! I also believe that the point is getting missed in all this. Yes, there were some demonstrations going on at other embassies over that film, BUT repeated requests for additional security were denied in a very unstable region. I just don't understand that. I would have thought that the anniversary of 9/11 alone would have required increased security at any number of locations.

Personally, I think it boils down to a screw-up. I think they realized afterwards that for whatever reason, adequate security had not been provided, terrorists then took advantage of that and planned a full-on attack. BUT, there is an election going on so some butt-covering started so the waters would be muddied enough to keep everyone in the dark as to what exactly happened. It is still going on with all of this focus on wording. I think things like this just might be why Hillary Clinton is stepping down.

        You're welcome Shawn.

I certainly don't take this as an impeachable offense, or anything to that level....But there are missteps in this incident, and to ignore them, and fix them, would be a disservice to future personel, along with the administration itself.

I believe that the GOP wants to put our citizens stationed outside America in harms way. McCain and peter king both have discussed confidential intel on TV to flex a muscle they DO NOT have. There are people working under cover, you know SPYS, who they try to out just like dick chaney did all so they can pretend to be so damn important. I've already lost 2 family members due to leaked intelligence in Iraq and Afganistan. That's more than enough when it's a direct result of republicans giving awaw secret intel on TV. How many people in other countries will help u again when they know the losing party will give them away to pretend to look smart? None will. So McCain, King, McConnell, Boehner an all you so called patriotic politicians, SHUT THE HELL UP. You ARE a danger to our fighting men and women. YOU are n the edge of TREASON. Providing secrets to the enemy IS a CRIME. You are NOT immune. Start cting lie Americans not like best friends to the murdering enemy. Tine to RETIRE John McCain. Your dementia slips out for public view on TV and you can't keep trying to hide it successfully. Your time has past. And one more thing, Obama BEAT your lying ass 4 years AGO. Get over it and stoip the 2 year olds tantrums. Be a man. That "war hero" tag has worn out itks relevince already.

Dougler: To your above statement I happen to agree. What concerns me most is, why wasn't there more security, why wasn't the consulate just vacated as other countries had done and why could we not react more appropriately to the situation. I don't have these answers and I consider them more important than to who called it what and why. Calling it a Sunday School Picnic doesn't alter the outcome, anymore than calling it a response to a video or a terrorist attack does.

It's sad that republicans have wasted so much time on such a silly thing. Who cares what they called it right after the attacks?? It doesn't matter! We know more now which is great, but this is just sour grapes and it's pathetic.

      1. We care because of the blatant misleading to fit the campaign meme Osama died, al Qaeda is on the run. That's what the video strawman is all about. It is and was dumb and the truth from day one would not have cost Obama the election.
      2. How can it be sour grapes since GOP has been on this since 9/12/12?

I can't wait until they get those secession "Arks" ready!!! Get their azzes out of here, ...away from me, and my Great nation! They serve absolutely no purpose, and are a danger to the American people. Especially considering we're still at war. The average IQ of this nation will rise by at least 50 points! God bless the U.S! It's time to call out the treasonors, and exile them.

The really crazy thing about all this is that while Republicans try like hell to make a scandal of the talking points the truly important question is why was security so lax at the 'mission' and what can be done to prevent another tragic occurrence like this. Maybe if we focused on what really matters here instead of trying to trip up the President for political purposes then something beneficial might come from this tragedy.

There are many things Obama wished you could tell him- Obama Spies are like pubic lice – all they do is suck and itch. Looks like the Little Poo Poo is worried -CNN is finally getting his serious attention – the "Blue Spies" are out in full force and fishing – where's the little worm? Look in Obama's pants (wink)

Mike- could not agree more. I do believe at the end of the day these things you are questioning are exactly what will be determined at the end of this entire investigation. Not whether it was a Video, a terrorist attack or a bad picnic that caused it.

The Eclipse Group, run by Iran Contra figure Duane Clarridge, got the security contract for Benghazi. He put untrained, unarmed Libyan security guards onsite. The Eclipse Group is not a security company. They are a corporate spy organization. Blue Mountain security is the UK organization contracted by the State Dept.

If you want to know why a neoconservative with ties to Cofer Black, Mitt Romney's national security adviser, got the security contract and then deliberately weakened security, we have to find out who at Blue Mountain made the decision to subcontract to The Eclipse Group. I suspect the State Dept found out that info months ago.
