Top U.S. commander in Afghanistan under investigation

The spiraling scandal that took down David Petraeus has apparently claimed another powerful general, as authorities announced that Gen. John Allen is under investigation for allegedly sending inappropriate messages to Jill Kelley, a woman who has been linked to the Petraeus scandal.

Allen, who is the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force, has disputed that he has committed any wrongdoing, a senior defense official said.

Details of the latest angle of the scandal that has shaken the highest level of the military were sketchy early Tuesday morning.

Some details about Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, came from a terse overnight statement by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta.

"On Sunday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation referred to the Department of Defense a matter involving General John Allen, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (or ISAF) in Afghanistan," part of the statement said. "Today, the secretary directed that the matter be referred to the Inspector General of the Department of Defense for investigation."

A defense official told CNN that there is a"distinct possibility" that the investigation into Allen is connected to the investigation that led to the resignation of Petraeus.

Allen will still retain his position as the commander of ISAF as the investigation continues, the Pentagon said.

But Panetta asked that Allen's nomination to become NATO's supreme allied commander be put on hold, the statement said.

The confirmation hearing to see if Allen would get that lofty military post was scheduled for Thursday.

The investigation was in its early stages but authorities were looking into some 20,000 to 30,000 pages of documents, the defense official said.

Good day! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using for this site? I'm getting fed up of WordPress because I've had problems with hackers and I'm looking at alternatives for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform. test http://testdomain.com

We need to be VERY VERY scared of what's going on here with our top military comand. We are witnessing a post election coup, and consolidation of power within the Obama regime. Step 1 eliminate any credible opposition. This is in synch with the resignation of many of obama's staff- they have bee forced to walk the plank. general after geneal after general getting ousted. Dont be fooled by obama's friendly smiling face, and his smooth talk – we have a hard core marxist in power of which, intentions to consoidate power can only be imagined. This is all happen while we are off balanace from the shocking and possibly rigged reelection of thid administration. be very very scared about where we are heading!

Quite the contrary rtcarb, Obama is just another right-wing thug in Washington working for the M.I.C. This is why we're fighting all these useless and unnecessary wars overseas and throwing more money at the Pentagon. The M.I.C. is getting more and more powerful as time goes on as Pres. Dwight D. Eisenhower already warned us about back in 1959, but very few listened and now we're paying the consequences!!!

I agree with you rtcarb as the sheeple like George Patton have reelected him. The country is headed to some seriously dangerous waters and our national security and economy will suffer, the US will be headed toward another great depression just with Obamacare alone, and the loss of our rights.
The mainstream media won't report this because they are to closely aligned with the Obama administration, in fact I would be surprised if CNN will post this without some monitoring (censorship).

Quite the contrary RetiredVet, I never voted for that butcher Obama and secondly, the news media is right-wing as it lavishes praise on our generals and never mentions the obscene butchery caused by our ungodly drones as they continue to hurl 500 lb. bombs on defenseless people!

Nice try, tho the most traded theories right now involve that 9/11 was because a few guys were h0rny and wanted to cheat on their spouses. I mean, just imagine Mr. Petraeus. On the field, women were like "oh, my hero" and at home probably likewise. Do you actually think he had any motivation whatsoever to complete the mission?

I think if General Allen is found guilty of adultery, then Ms. Kelley should be tried and face sentencing also. If BOTH participants in adultery are held accountable, perhaps it would curtail this behavior, but probably not.

Adultery is not a crime. It may be in Towel Head land, but not in any "real" country. Hahahahahahahaahahah

It is in the U.S. military.
And even if it wasn't, doesn't any of you feel stupid or such that there are persons who dedicated life to partner, family and country, just to be betrayed? And that while taxpayers paid for the "s3x holidays" of persons who probably spent work-time on their pleasure?
