Seven U.S. Navy SEALs have been reprimanded for giving up classified information connected to their tradecraft so a video game could seem more realistic, according to a navy official.
The seven were charged with the unauthorized showing of their official combat gear and dereliction of duty for disclosing classified material after an investigation found the seven to have worked as paid consultants for two days with the video game company Electronic Arts, according to a U.S. Navy official familiar with the investigation.
The work, done around the late spring and early summer, was unauthorized by their commanders and against military regulations according to the Navy official.
All seven are active duty members of SEAL Team 6, considered the most elite of the Navy’s SEAL community. At least one of the team members was on the raid that killed Osama bin Laden last year, according to a Navy official.
The seven, all senior enlisted sailors, received their punishment Thursday at their base in Virginia. All seven were given a letter of reprimand and their pay taken for two months. The move essentially prevents their chances for promotion and ends their military careers.
Four other SEALs who have since transferred to west coast SEAL teams are still under investigation, according to the official.
The seven members were consulting with Electronic Arts on the game “Medal of Honor: Warfighter,” according to the official. The game touts that it is developed with the help of former and active duty commandos.
"Naval Special Warfare (NSW) takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and conducts investigations to determine the facts. We likewise take seriously the Non-Disclosure Agreements signed by Sailors and adherence to the articles of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice,” said Rear Adm. Garry Bonelli, Deputy Commander of the Naval Special Warfare Center in a statement given to Security Clearance.
"We do not tolerate deviations from the policies that govern who we are and what we do as Sailors in the United States Navy. The non-judicial punishment decisions made today send a clear message throughout our Force that we are and will be held to a high standard of accountability,” Bonelli, said.
The disclosure of the extra curricular activities of the SEALs comes on the heels of recently retired SEAL who was on the bin Laden raid and wrote a book about the operation.
The publication of the book released a firestorm of complaints toward the author by the Pentagon which said the book revealed secret information about how the SEALs operate. Pentagon officials threatened the author with legal action if the book was published.
To date there has been no further action toward the author Matt Bissonette, who wrote the book under the name Mark Owen.

A letter of reprimand and two months pay is neither a prevention of promotion nor a career ending action. It's a slap on the wrist. If they were even remotely serious an article 15 at the least would've been given. Nice reporting CNN.

Wow, after reading this article and all the comments made, I know some of you don't have anything better to do and be belligerent over the internet.
Video games (shooting) does not make a person capable to shoot, train and/or be adequate for a mission. It's fantasy. If I show someone pictures, exchange a story, or show them a video, he or she will never perform exceptionally on their own. It takes a Master, Mentor, Instructor, or a teacher to show and enable those skills. Knowing equipment goes the same way. I know more than half of this country will not know how to put a half-thousand dollar vest on or even put one together. After reading the book, No Easy Day, I can point out many classified information, but for an ordanary person would probably never catch it on their own.
Only someone in the Military should point out their views about the SEAL's awarded the court martial and the NJP's.

While we live in a social media world there parts that have to stay secret. I grew up in a Black Ops household and the first thing you learn is Keep Your Big Mouth Shut. You are young and believe whatever authority figures tell you. Yes.. giving away secrets could be dangerous. But they didn’t give away anything of consequence. Navy Seals have given a lot of advice to games/movies/books in the past. The difference here and the only reason you are hearing about it is that they didn’t get permission first. They are being made examples of. Feel free to join up when you are old enough. Maybe then you’ll realize this is about authority not secrets or safety.

I have & like this game. After the news came out about the game, it makes me want to play it more...If this is real classified information why is it all over the news and why did they let the public know what game was involved?

This did not end their career..terrible job reporting. They got a 60/60 loss of two months pay and a letter added to their service record. The Navy will not terminate the career of 7 highly trained Seals over something like this...Get a grip CNN
A UCMJ punishment follows you for your whole career and can effectively end it. If you can't get promoted, you will be discharged for tunure. So they are correct. What they recieved is called captains mast and they lose 1/2 a months pay for 2 months. He could have dishonorably dischrged them if he wanted to.

You cannot be dishonorably discharged at Captains Mast. But these guys most likely lost their security clearances over this, effectively ending their SEAL careers.
Since I am not privy to all the SEALS classified information, I have no idea what is “real” in the video game. As for endangering fellow SEALS, that is truly BS. Every mission, every situation has different tactics and parameters. To even consider they use the same technique over and over is completely stupid. As for official gear, I don’t recall an article of the UCMJ that addresses Official Gear? Does it have some special sticker? Copyright? I think they should get a swift kick in the A$$ in the privacy of their Commander’s Office and be sent on their next assignment.
Considering how low their pay is, two months will be felt; I hope EA paid them a nice consulting fee and thank them for the continued service to our nation.
Their SEAL careers are over. There ability to get a security clearance in the future is done. Guess they can be full time consultants to game makers or become mercs but the fact remains that they have chosen to betray their oath. All they had to do was submit a request to their superiors to take the job as consultants and get approval. Let this be a lesson to a new generation of Special Operations–KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT!!!
With such highly trained and dangerous people, we should all be careful how much you push them. Look what happened in Mexico and their elite forces who all joined up with the drug cartels because they pay insane amounts of $$$

Their careers are at a dead end now. Most likely they will be overlooked for future promotions, in essence their careers are terminated, unless they are at the top grades of enlisted personnel (E7-E9). which I doubt they are, more likely E5's &6's. Sad state of affairs losing experts like this, and now General Petraeus career comes to a halt. Big losses for the Spec Ops community.

A UCMJ punishment stays in your record and is taken into account when you are up for promotion and IS held against you, trust me.
The letter effects their security clearance. They'll be lucky to have a desk assignment. The inability to get a security clearance in the future will limit any civilian jobs they can have. In five years what they know will have become obsolete so jobs as consultants will dry up. They can be mercs but even those organizations require you to KEEP YOUR BIG MOUTH SHUT! Why is this so hard to understand?

A letter of reprimand for allowing others to see and describe Special OPS gear to make a vidoe game more realistic???? Get serious!!! A Tom Clancy novel routinely explains and describes special forces "kits" as a filler for his tales. Clancy's non-fiction works like "Guided Tour of Light Infantry" gives a lot of detail and is fact based. The promary actors in the Movie Act of Valor were SEALS. Does any one think the gear in the game was any different than in the movie? Senior Military could and probably should be using this as a recruiting tool.
They didn't submit a request and notification to Senior Military for permission to do this knowing full well it was against the UMCJ. Guess they thought the rules don't apply to them.
Slaps on the wrists here for disclosing CLASSIFIED information for PERSONAL GAIN, but other federal government employees who expose CLASSIFIED or EVEN UNclassified disclosures or high-level wrongdoing - referred to as "whistleblowers" - get immediately fired or face decades in prison like Thomas Drake (National Security Agency), who went to the the inspectors generals first.

They are a very small percentage of the Teams and these incidences are embarrassing to our community as a whole. Nearly all of our members take the greatest pride in doing the job to the best our ability without seeking financial reward or recognition outside of the teams and continue to serve our communities and country long after we leave the Teams. No matter what you hear from CNN, Fox, Social Media, or anyone else thousands of men who wear or have worn the Trident continue to be silent professionals.

Please show us where the President revealed secret SEAL gear and tactics. And it's funny you forget that the President did not say anything at all about the prep to get Bin Laden until after Bin Laden was dead and the SEALS were home safe. That's a lot more restraint than the Bush admin used when they outed an active CIA agent in harms way to help them start the unecessary Iraq war that costs thousands of U.S. lives.

While I agree that the vast majority of operators continue to exceed the high standards expected of them, I think the punishment of those who chose not to is both fitting and important. The Special Operations community serves as role models to the rest of the military community, and forgiving a breach of security at such a high level would likely have wider implications throughout the military as a whole.

Wrong – in the 1990's I was in AFSOC at Hurlburt Field. Delta – STS – and the 20th SOS (now decommisioned) were all tier one. All other SEALs / Army SF and AFSOC forces were tier 2.

Having served in the military with a unit that was tied to SOF groups this hits me a couple of different ways. One, I think the SEALs involved being punished is good. They have a security clearance and they broke the rules. On the other hand, the government has been giving up secrets to the media for years without anyone being punished. I remember the days of we can not confirm nor deny, now it's oh look it's team 6 or hey Delta just did this. Normally it's just the media putting a label to grab headlines, lately it's been official statements. That is sickening.

I raised my hand in an oath to the U.S. Air Force, the DOD and DOE, that I would not never disclose information that I was privy to that was classified or sensitive and would endanger the United States. I did that starting nearly forty years ago and I have abided by that oath since. I am adamant that probity is placed above perfidy and no amount of money can by my allegiance to my country and its security. Any special forces or persons who have access to our national defense technology should be accountable for securing that information and if they cannot then they should be summarily subjected to the terms that were defined in their contract: ie UCMJ. I don't care about video games, action movies or celebrity, I care about the security of our country and ALL of our citizens.

I was NUPOC. I was good, no one actually could understand my Job...Then again, no one wanted to do my Job. Even the few SeALs I did know on a personal basis,were afraid to be around me.
And when I mean Personal, as in actual friends, they do not talk about their job, and I will not talk about my job.

Huh? Unless there are two NPOCs, what is your point? You make it sound like BUDS, SEAL, Delta, etc. NPOC is an acronym for Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate: a program to get quality college students into the nuclear propulsion field. No SEAL or any other SOC soldier would fear you. Working in any nuke job is a pain in the butt: after serving in a Special Weapons unit in Germany, I can attest to the fact it's a pain in the butt. But I couldn't strike fear into anyone for my job, as you couldn't. And you didn't even state you went through NPOC which exists to pay students a goodly stipend to study for the nuke field. Did you go into and finish college? Did you join the Navy? Did you serve in nuclear propulsion? Grow up and soldier up: keep your comments focused on relevant facts and issues. Your comments are no better than comments relating to your expertise in playing video games. Tchuss!

We should have sent the U.S. Army Special Forces or Delta Force instead of the S.E.A.L.s; an organization constantly seeking adoration and glory. The "Green Berets" are known as the "Quiet Professionals."
I don't think you have a clue what the SEALS have done, and rightly so. For decades they have conducted their missions in a hole so deep that even the funding is kept secret. Your comment belies your lack of knowledge on the subject, and lessens the work and tradition of the teams.
The Green Berets wouldn't have been abale to carry out the op because they aren't labled a tier 1 special ops force. Hence they wouldn't have been given the order
It takes more than a year to develop a video game. Therefore Call of Duty had to have been in development before the release of battlefield 1942, and so it couldn't have been a rip-off.

A Tom Clancy Novel....key word being "novel". When i enlisted in the United States military, i was brought to an understanding that i had a job to protect any privileged information that i would come across. Extending that, when i got investigated/interviewed for a Security Clearance, you go through briefs in which it is CLEARLY explained that until the CLASSIFIED information is "cleaned" or UNCLASSIFIED, then you will NOT discuss or disclose it to unauthorized individuals. As Americans, it is all of our duty to protect our country with any information that could be seen as helpful to foreign countries. Now i'm not saying that some Taliban is going to go to Amazon.com and buy the video game, but if i was trying to succeed in a Security breech, and this is all over the news, then that would be the first thing i would evaluate. It was careless, and the fact that they got paid for it, is along the lines of Treason to me. as a smaller unit in the Navy, i look to the Seals with a LOT of respect, integrity, military bearing, honor, courage, and committment. Nothing about telling a VIDEO GAME company Secret information reflects those traits. Whether or not if he's dead and the mission is over, when a certain tactic is used and it gets results, then it's going to be recycled. // JB1111, stop dick-riding Obama. he seems to be all you think and talk about. I have been enjoying this game since it's release. I am a retired 49 year old, and have buddies online-it's fun to talk and go loud-Hollywood..lol! As a former STS member, WARFIGHTER is the best FPS i've played.
I am looking forward to the map pack DLC that is based on the binladen house in Packholeistan.

In my day, we would've been strung up by our family jewels for unauthorized disclosure of classified information. Dishonorable discharge and a decade or two in federal prison was the norm. What's happened to our military today?? What these fools did is not much better than what John Walker did 30+ years ago... and he's still making little rocks out of big rocks in federal prison.
Back in my day B.S. The SEALs did not disclose anything of importance outside of the methods and tactics used in the field. Which is easily adaptive and always evolves depending on technology and the target. John Walker on the other hand knowingly gave away COMSEC to the Soviets. Mr. Walker gave the Soviets the opportunity to monitor all communications of NATO and US forces in all AOs. If there was a conflict between the US and USSR, the US would military would have been decimated without the use of nuclear weapons. The SEALs information given recently would amount to no tactical advantage for our enemies. The tactics are open source and available by most civilian tactical firearms instructors.
Do you know why many of the men from WW2 did not reveal what they did and how they did it., for many year????
the code breakers from the UK, did not even tell their families what they did or that they were helping Britain in ww2.....

! I doubt they gave up anything important Val. It was probably not anything truly classified. And, the seals figured It was fine to give out the information. It was nothing mission changing, Furthermore, will not put them in harm. These guys are still active seals. Like they are going to really give out info that will harm them on their next mission! There are so many Government consultants making money, giving info for movies and books. And most are just small tactics and nothing huge. The real issue is these guys not asking for permission. So in short, someone else would have made some money on the project I am sure.
According to the news I read, they showed off some of the specially made equipment their team uses so the game could be more "real." Granted, not like giving out nuclear access codes, but it was a dumb move, and certainly one they should not have made. With all the books that have come out in the last few years, it does seem like even SEALs enjoy basking in the limelight a bit, which is a poor move for men who do their type of work. The more they keep to themselves, the better their advantage over their adversaries. Even these guys are falling into the trap of gaining even a bit of recognition, at the potential impact of putting themselves and their team mates in danger. Disappointing....
It's our fault really. As a nation we hero worship anyone who wears a uniform (at least until they start becoming pacifists or need a job after demobilization), and we want to know every tidbit about everyone who is famous or powerful. They're rock stars, and it's hard to resist acting accepting a little bit of that admiration..
