Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.
The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.
The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.
Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf. In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran. Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.
Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.
At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.
The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday. They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.
The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.
The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.
U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.
But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."
Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.
The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.
Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region. In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.
Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

Well it looks to me as the drone was 4 miles from the sea border those were warning shots not to enter the Iranian air space. I wonder if an Iranian war drone/plane would fly 4 miles outside the border of United States heading towards New York if U.S. would be as nice and shoot just warning shots.

fyi the su-25 is a ground support aircraft similar to our A-10 warthog. It is not a fighter jet. The su-27 is a fighter jet
Regardless of the purpose of the aircraft, it still carried ammunition, and still fired on an American aircraft in international airspace. Semantics is all cool, I guess, when defending the fact hider in chief. How convenient to hide this until after the election.

During the Cold War, Russian bombers flew down our coastline regularly. Actually, beginning in the late 2000s they began doing it again. Also, in the late 2000s, a Russian bombing formation flew over a US battlegroup (which is actually a major no-no.) At no point did the US fire on any of these planes. Buzzing unfriendly nations is a part of playing in the big leagues and is hardly done only by the US. Your argument falls miserably.

No, according to the report it wasn't a MiG at all. It was an Su-25 'Frogfoot' close air support aircraft. It's a russian verision of an A-10. That said, the gun is the primary armament. Close air support pilots should be proficent at aiming it. BUT... this is the Iranian military we are talking about. 99% hot air, 1%actual ability. I forsee us going in to put them in their place. Shooting at a US aircraft is an act of war no matter what. Our aircraft do not discharge weapons at or near other aircraft, especially in international waters. Remember this people: The Iranian military is a joke. It's all bluff. They have no technology, no skill, and no experience. They are STILL flying F-14's we gave to them in the 60's and 70's. (I might be wrong WHEN we gave them to them, so someone correct me if I'm wrong.) That drone, if it was armed with something as simple as an AIM-9 Sidewinder (range varies with models, a little over a mile usually) could have shot both of them down. The Iranians are beating their chest right now. But they're the ones who are gonna get rocked when the US and everyone else gets sick of agression in the most important oil route in the world.

I am not sure I completely buy this story. I certainly cannot say what happened, but do Iranian jets fly over international waters frequently? It seems to me either they had to leave Iranian airspace intentionally to seek out the drone, or the drone was not over international waters. Given Iran's tenuous position, it seems unlikely they left their airspace to find drones to shoot at. It certainly is possible this is the case, but it does leave plenty of room for doubt.

The problem with these drones strikes is that they are occurring outside of the legal system and away from a battlefield. Declaring the world a battlefield in the war on terror is a Bush policy that gives the executive branch power to execute people for being SUSPECTED of a crime. Last December, 2011, another US drone aircraft was lost to Iran. It apparently malfunctioned and landed with minimal damage in IRAN. Don't recall whether that spy plane was armed .. but it was flying over IRAN. The US Military denied it until it was conclusively demonstrated to be spying over Iran. Would be interesting to see the video from the drone – it would help indicate the severity of the threat to the unmanned American spy plane.

And yes I have served on active duty in our military. I can not re-enlist because of age and physical limitations. No one is suggesting that the US should go to war...however, the incident is important and the American should have been told about it prior to the elections. Maybe President Obama would still have been re-elected, but he should have been forced to comment on what the US plans to do about an increasingly hostile Iran. We should not wait until American blood is spilled to respond to hostile nations...unless you are volunteering your own.
