FIRST ON CNN: Iranian jets fire on U.S. drone

By Barbara Starr

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf on November 1, the Pentagon disclosed on Thursday.

The incident, reported first by CNN, raised fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.

The drone was on routine maritime surveillance in international airspace east of Kuwait, 16 miles off the coast of Iran, U.S. officials said. The Predator was not hit.

Also: U.S. adds to Iran sanctions

"Our aircraft was never in Iranian airspace. It was always flying in international air space. The recognized limit is 12 nautical miles off the coast and we never entered the 12 nautical mile limit," Pentagon Press Secretary George Little said in responding to questions from reporters after CNN reported the incident.

Little said the United States believed this was the first time an unmanned aircraft was shot at by the Iranians in international waters over the Gulf.  In December of 2011, a U.S. surveillance drone crashed in eastern Iran.  Iranians claimed to have shot it down, and created a toy model of the drone to celebrate its capture.

Little stopped short of calling the incident an act of war although the Pentagon was concerned.

Also: Obama faces world of challenges in second terms

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

At least two bursts of gunfire came from the Su-25s' cannons. The drone started to move away but the Iranian aircraft chased it, doing aerial loops around it before breaking away and returning to Iran.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident before the presidential election, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN on Thursday.  They declined to be identified because of sensitive intelligence matters surrounding the matter.

The drone's still and video cameras captured the incident showing two Su-25s approaching the Predator and firing onboard guns.

The Iranian pilots continued to fire shots that went beneath the Predator but were never successful in hitting it, according to the officials.

U.S. military intelligence analysts are still not sure if the Iranian pilots simply were unable to hit the drone due to lack of combat skill, or whether they deliberately were missing and had no intention of bringing it down.

But as one of the officials said, "it doesn't matter, they fired on us."

Little said the United States has to assume Iran was trying to bring down the Predator.

The United States protested the incident but had not heard back from Iran.

Iran has, at other times, been confrontational in the region.  In January, the U.S. military and coast guard had close encounters with Iranian Navy vessels which approached at high speeds and exhibited provocative behavior.

Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the United States, declined to say whether his country knew about the incident before Pentagon officials

Of course CNN sat on the story. We can't have anything that may make Obama look bad before the election. It is really so sad to see this version of "yellow jounalism".

Obama said Iran is totally under control and he has neutralized any possible threat.

You do realize that Obama could have used this to his advantage. After the incident he could have addressed the nation and responded which would probably have rallied the country behind him (at least in the short term).

The fact that he didn't speaks volumes (to me).

The only thing it speaks to me is that Obama LIED yet again, for his political advantage. He was afraid that he would be viewed as weak and dead wrong on Iran, since 2 weeks earlier he was lecturing Romney on how well he has Iran under control, and that they are not at all a threat. How can you be so gullible as to think he did this as a show of good character? He used every lie and underhanded trick possible during the campaign, and surely would have used this to his advantage if he thought he could, but his advisers told him that it would have the opposite effect. Why do people defend Obama like a parent would defend a retarded child? He asked for this job, and he got it, so now let him DO the job, and take the blame when he screws up. God knows the media didn't cut GW Bush an ounce of slack for 8 years running.

Ok cowboys. I don't know much about the military but can a drone fire a missle from 16 miles away from the Iranian coast and hit them? I believe they can and if so, I believe that Iran had the right to make their defensive position known. The drone is unmanned – can Iran contact the "pilot" and tell them they're getting too close? I choose to believe that these were warning shots. If they really wanted to hit the drone, I'm sure they could keep firing until they hit their mark. There were two planes. I'm sure they had more than 1 "bullet" each. I actually wouldn't be surprised if the US (maybe it was a US drone given to Israel?) sent that drone close enough (16 miles away) to provoke the Iranians then the US/Israel would have a reason to go to war again.

now theres a thought. If iran had a drone 16 miles off the coast of california or say, new york, we would shoot and destroy it! and that plan would not surprise me either. going to war with iran would be a huge mistake and further our debt so much there would be a depression. people please stop being so militeristic and close minded. you act like were the victims. we need to mind our own business and those drones should be flying 16 miles off OUR coast for defense purposes instead of attack purposes. afterall, they do call it DEFENSE spending. this is embarassing

DoD just released it...somethings should not be public knowledge immediately and a US aircraft being shot at is one of these. The military needs to analyze things and I would say a week is pretty fair for a reconnaisance aircraft being shot at in the Persian Gulf.

America is the root of all terror. America has invaded sixty country since world war 2.
In 1953 America overthrow Iran's democratic government and installed a brutal dictator Shah. America helped Shah of Iran to establish secret police and killed thousands of Iranian people.
During Iran-Iraq war evil America supported Suddam Hossain and killed millions of Iranian people. In 1989, America shot down Iran's civilian air plane, killing 290 people.
In 2003,America invaded Iraq and killed 1,000,000+ innocent Iraqi people and 4,000,000+ Iraqi people were displaced.
Now America is a failed state with huge debt. Its debt will be 22 trillion by 2015.

  2. Just The Facts

It's a concern to hear about the Iranians firing on a US drone as well as the Russian nuclear sub skirting the East Coast (which is a throwback to the days of the Cold War). We are very vulnerable right now but many people are not acknowledging the problem. That's never a good sign. Bush tried to warn of the effects of giving people houses who couldn't afford them and Barney Frank laughed it off. Then came the horrible meltdown. I concede that the spending was out of control under Bush and I don't have time to hear about Bush bashing. Because I can Clinton bash right back at you. To see the President and dumb Uncle Joe, Reid, etc., laugh and laugh about all the fires that are burning means that they won't help and after the collapse of the country will just blame the Republicans.

How would the USA treat a hostile country's miltary plane that was cruising along the border of the USA say along Long Island or NYC? Would the USA have acted in fashion other than the way Iran did?

Just curious. I recall the Chinese shot at and brought in a US Spy plane with its large crew and dismantled the whole plane and returned its dismatled pieces at a later date. The Iranians did not take such drastic action against the USA but nevertheless made their presence and capability known. Would the USA not similarly treat those trolling its borders with military planes? Hope there is not a double standard being practised here!

NO! You have no idea what you are talking about. Might we have sent military aircraft out to intercept? Yes, Might we asked them to leave? Yes. It was North Korea and they didn't shoot at our plane. The NK pilot was harassing the crew and they clipped. NK pilot died and our crew flew the plane into China and landed. China dismantled it and ship it back to the US after ripping off the technology and stealing any part they wanted.

It is widely agreed that the Persian Gulf is largely international airspace. That would likely be different if Iran had all the land around the Gulf, but it does not. Likewise, we don't target planes in the international airspace between Cuba and the U.S.

The chinese incident you allude to was when a chinese fighter crashed into one of our planes and they had to make an emergency landing on chinese territory get your facts straight. when the russians send their backfire bombers to our shores we do scramble our fighter and escort them back to international waters. however we have not fired upon any of them even when they were within our borders. In this case the drone was in International waters not Iranian and it was fired upon. this was a show of force to show the world what a paper tiger we are again just like when Carter was president

What would the US do if an unfriendly aircraft/drone etc was in international waters on off our coast? Well we did that with the USSR in the 70's and 80's. We shadowed them and warned them. If it was an aggressive approach then that was intercepted in international airspace, but patrolling was allowed. We just shadowed them. If the drone broke Iranian territory, they have every right to shoot it down. In international waters they do not. And unless we were at war I don’t think we would do it to them.

Iran Air Flight 655 was a civilian jet airliner shot down by U.S. missiles on 3 July 1988 as it flew over the Strait of Hormuz at the end of the Iran–Iraq War. The aircraft, an Airbus A300B2-203 operated by Iran Air, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. While flying in Iranian airspace over Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf on its usual flight path, it was destroyed by the United States Navy guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes (CG-49). All 290 onboard including 66 children and 16 crew perished.

Mike, no we wouldn't. Russian subs have been very near our coasts recently and we haven't taken agressive action towards them, at least not that the public has been told about. And the Iranians shot at and missed the drone. They didn't show any capability because they don't have any. And what does the chinese thing have to do with this? I don't see the connection. And the drone was in international airspace. I don't think the U.S. would shoot at planes in international airspace. When has that happened recently? Glad you are in Canada. I see going down the amount of taxes given to the coffers because no one can get a job or have given up. How long before the wealthy leave or move their headquarters to another country? I will tell you not long. Maybe it is time for the wealthy liberals to put up or shut up. They will gladly take mine but when it comes to theirs that is a different story. If Liberals wanted be "fair" to everyone, they wouldn't be wealthy they would have already done it because it was right. They won't do it unless it is law.

This mentality is part of the problem. Should the federal government help when it can, sure. More importantly, individual American citizens should be better prepared for disasters and work together locally to help each other out. That's what American citizens did in the past when self-reliance was more rooted in our society. We need to pray and send help now to all Hurricane Sandy victims. We must also learn from this situation. YOU CANNOT DEPEND ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

Interesting how this comes out AFTER the election. We have a weak leader as POTUS and this poor excuse of a president will be in office another 4 years. America is in DANGER from within and from outside. Unfortunately the only way half of Americans who voted for Obama will wake up is when there's even more MISERY. Perhaps then we will be united as a country. To my fellow American patriots who are awake and did not vote for this fraud of a president prepare for bad times, diversify your money into hard assets, join forces with like-minded patriots, and starve the federal government by legally minimizing your tax exposure like starting a home based business. God bless.

Bobpitt, do not put words in my mouth. I do not want to bankrupt my country besides the federal government is doing a fine job of that on its own. I am simply advocating Americans to minimize the amount of taxes they pay to the federal government LEGALLY. Why continue to feed a system that is out of control and will eventually collapse? Pick up a history book and show me how many countries have survived economically using fiat currency and excessively printing currency.

Resorting to insults prove you are intellectually incapable of having an adult conversation. I am advocating for LEGALLY minimizing taxes paid to the federal government in order to fight the overspending that is taking place. As for Greece, Italy, Spain, and any other Socialist leaning country the majority of their financial problems did not come from people paying LESS taxes. On the contrary, taxes are much higher in Socialist leaning countries. The problem is overspending. As stated before, pick up a history book or an economics book and tell me how Socialism has worked. Don't respond if all you have in you are insults.

The reason we're just now hearing about Iran firing on an American drone is not because of Obama's incompetence. It's because CNN didn't want to say anything about it until after the election.

Unbelievable. So Iran fires on us on November 1st, and we find out about now on November 8th.
      I'm curious. Why the delay?
Is it because the government hid it from us? Gee we should kind of know about these things when they happen. Might affect an election.
Is it because the media sat on it to protect Obama? Wouldnt surprise given the fact that CBS interview with Obama about Benghazi was parceled out in drips and drops for 2 months. They hid details from that interview that clearly made Obama seem like he was hiding the truth.
I have no faith in this President, nor in the media that is so biased in his favor and that it would forfeited its journalistic integrity.

Really? There was a pentagon briefing, and it was reported on CNN, both of which are in Obama's pocket. Meanwhile, Obama is trying to tell us that all is right with the world. Why would they lie about this? Plus, they didn't disclose this information until today, a week later, after Obama lied his way into office again. What part of that don't you believe?

Hilarious. That's all CNN has to say about it? The Obama administration didn't report this because it was right before the election? You freaking hacks. Does that not say it all about not only the media, but this administration and their withholding of information here, Benghazi and probably lots of other areas. Reminds me of Yahoo news too. They are now spouting off about how Social Security is unsustainable. Really? Now you decide to get in the game rather than covering for Obama? After the election? They are all complicit and should be ashamed.

Iran wouldn't even be an issue if that gutless Jimmy Carter would have moved in with force during the Hostage crisis. Weakness in the Middle East is met with contempt. Although the drone was not hit, the Pentagon is concerned.

Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.

The Obama administration did not disclose the incident, which occurred just days before the presidential election on November 1, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN.

How utterly convenient not to announce this before the election. Just another example of the "transparency" of the Obama administration. And now, back to Libya...

Bob, this was a matter of national security so it didn't necessarily need to be mentioned. The problem with Obama is how he selectively uses the military to his advantage. Does it not bother you that he flatly lied to the American people and the World about Libya? He could have simply stated that we suffered a tragedy and it was being investigated. He instead made up a ridiculous lie and he and his representatives told it repeatedly for two weeks. I have never been so disappointed in my country as I am right now. This is not "aggression". We violated their airspace with the drone, we accept the risk it might be fired on. We would do the same exact thing if any other country did this to us. We do not have a universal right to ignore the sovereignty of other nations just because it suits us.

You need to understand that of course they said that, anything but that is an admission of illegal invasion. Remember that other secret stealth drone that just crashed in Iran a couple months ago????

WE HAVE BEEN ATTACKING IRAN FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS. Terror attacks have been blowing up their scientists numerous times. We have been attacking their airspace for months and months. They are doing EVERYTHING UNDER THE SUN to not fight us, but all we do is provoke and provoke and provoke. Just look at the history of this Iran situation for 10 minutes, please!!!!

Also btw, understand that i am a big time football loving, gun shooting, Texan. So don't come at me with Obama communist hippie stuff.

        November 8, 2012 at 2:49 pm |
    • Lee-Anne

So you "know" they violated their airspace? Pretty sure the article states the drone was in international airspace. That would make it aggression. Where did you read they violated Iranian airspace in the article.

It said it occurred in the Persian GULF. Since when is that Iranian airspace.

    • anchorite

Jesse, the part of "international airspace" we didn't get is how the US claims to have a 200 mile buffer when it's US airspace but when it's within 200 miles of another country it's "international." The other part is hot pursuit. If we were spying on Iran over their land earlier, they are allowed to pursue the drone into international waters of any distance and shoot it down. Maybe, just maybe, we are trying to provoke Iran? Or perhaps we just find it convenient to play with our toys off the coast of an enemy half a planet away, yeah.

      November 8, 2012 at 2:36 pm | Reply
  77. Dude

The gulf area is very small. When they international airspace or water, you get the impression the drone was in a wide opern air space. In realty, these countries are very close. So, It is like flying a few miles off the cost of a US city. A drone flying that close with leathal missle can swing in a second and take out target deep into their country. Anyway, it is expected they would do that and it is likley a warning shot, and the US was just testing their radar and air rediness.

    November 8, 2012 at 2:26 pm | Reply
    • ALM

Dude...you're an idiot. No UAV is gonna "swing over in a second" and go anywhere fast. And they don't carry anything lethal enough to take out a city.

You liberals live in a fantasy land where the biggest issue on your plate is how we can manage to put everyone on a government program as some kind of political Xanax. Realize there are actual issues at hand.

Anytime I hear the term "left-wing" anything it sort of invalidates your opinion because I know you're just a Fox News drone. You know what liberals do with our most radical "left-wing" people? We IGNORE them because they're crazy. Trees don't have inalienable rights, and we aren't switching to veganism. What does the conservative movement do with it's most radical supporters? They shove them on a network TV and radio shows and swallow their dribble like it's the word of God himself. It doesn't matter to me because the GOP will continue to alienate normal intelligent people with it's utter nonsense and won't gain much of a foothold in a rapidly changing society. If this last election didn't convince anyone then just stay tuned.

You realize a student LOAN isn't leaching right? Key word is LOAN. Not a handout, grant, freebie. No LOAN. Those get paid back with interest so you actually lose money when getting one. Just thought I'd help you out. You must not be able to get all that knowledge through your tinfoil hat.

I don't know if Scott gets a check from the govt or not, but I do. After working for 50 plus years paying into SS, Medicare, etc I finally decided to retire and get back some o that I paid for so long. Oh yeh, I also get a diability check. From the VA each month, for the 3 pieces of shrapnelI still have in my body I got in Vietnam, and the VA sends me my pain meds to help take away some of the pain from that I have lived with every day since 1970. Guess all that just makes me one of those freeloaders doesn't it. POS.

At least attempt to see both sides of the arguments instead of blindly supporting your beloved Obama.

And we all know that it's the republicans who like to start wars in order to secure their re-elections and benefit themselves financially by sending their own corporations to "rebuild" those nations and take their oil.

Predators are armed with Hellfire missiles for air to ground strikes. You would need an air to air missile to hit a supersonic capable aircraft like a Sidewinder or Stinger. @Jim: What part of the drone being in international airspace don't you understand? A ChiCom drone over Long Island Sound would be in American territorial airspace and subject to be shot down. Drones, airplanes and ships in international airspace or waters, outside the territorial limits of any country, have every right to be there and attacking them would be an act of war.
