Panetta on Benghazi attack: 'Could not put forces at risk'

By Chris Lawrence

The U.S. military did not get involved during the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, last month because officials did not have enough information about what was going on before the attack was over, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Thursday.

At a Pentagon news briefing, Panetta said there was no "real-time information" to be able to act on, even though the U.S. military was prepared to do so.

"You don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on," Panetta said. "(We) felt we could not put forces at risk in that situation."

A defense official provided more context on Panetta's comments about the decision-making involved in not sending U.S. troops to the consulate being attacked in Benghazi.

He said there was a drone aloft but not directly over the area at the time the attack began.

He said the drone was redirected and arrived in time to record some of the attack. But he described what the drone saw as "looking down, seeing a bunch of buildings and fires, a lot of chaos on the ground."

The real Benghazi lessons

He said it was not enough to discern exactly what was happening.

"We didn't have good eyes on the situation. There were security forces there on the ground, but they're in the middle of a firefight - not sending a Sitrep (Situational Report).

The official could not reveal the specific reaction times for the military's Fleet Anti Terrorism Security Teams, which are classified, but said "it would be physically impossible for them to get there in time to intervene in that attack from say, Rota, Spain."

He cited the time it takes just to get their transportation in the air. The official said "these situations normally deteriorate over time ... but usually in a few days, not two hours." He explained that even quick-reaction teams are often positioned for places where intelligence shows a "deteriorating situation" near an embassy.

The official also provided context for Panetta's and Gen. Martin Dempsey's remarks about criticism on the response.

"It's not helpful to provide partial answers," Dempsey said. And Panetta criticized what he called "Monday morning quarterbacking."

The defense official said it was directed at criticism coming from pundits and Capitol Hill.

"In perfect hindsight, yes - we'd do it differently. But how it looks weeks later is not how it looked at the time.

"You had the movie, the 9/11 anniversary and unrest in various countries in that region. All that factored into the decision to put troops on a heightened state of alert. But that doesn't mean forces are positioned everywhere in the world, ready to run to the rescue. We're not the fire department. And there was no actionable intelligence that Benghazi was going to be attacked on 9/11."

Next month, the Democratic-led Senate Intelligence Committee will hold a closed hearing in Washington to review the security situation and intelligence surrounding the Benghazi attack, according to a committee announcement released Thursday.

The hearing, not open to the public, will review intelligence collection and threat reporting in Libya and other Middle East countries before the September 11 attack on the U.S. mission as well as what was known and who is responsible for the attack, among other issues.

A number of government investigations continue into what happened on the attack.

Wrong photo caption. Administration has now made clear this was not a protest. Didn't CNN get the latest White House memo? You need to switch from video protest to terrorist attack as though the White House never called it a video protest in the first place. Geez guys, keep up with with cover up!

Why is there no mention of Benghazi on today's CNN homepage? America, please watch the interviews given by Charles Woods, grieving father of hero Navy Seal Ty Woods. The Obama team, including Hillary and Bill, are BUYING TIME to cover for Obama until after election. With a large number of early voters, every day counts in the cover up. Piers Morgan, Anderson Cooper, Candy Crowley - please step up and interview Charles Woods on your show. Or would this ruin your reputation with Barack, Michelle, the likes of Wasserman-Schultz and the Hollywood elite?

Hours, almost 8 hours. If you watch all the news from when it first occurred you would have thought that this happened and was over with before you knew it. Also you never heard about the SEALS responding from another location to help out and then killed. This was all information that the White House knew from day one. It never was a riot in response to a video. Call it what it is a cover up, nothing more, nothing less!! The American people are smarter than this. An 8 hour fire fight with AK-47 and RPG's, a car chase back to the CIA safe haven, attacks at the CIA safe haven. I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but even I can figure out this was an attack and not a riot!

You are uninformed and in no position to be telling somebody else they are. Our military was nearby and ready to go but they were told 3 times to stand down. Two of the people who were killed were SEALS who disobeyed orders and went in to try and save lives. The Obama administration watched a LIVE FEED of the attack. There were direct calls for help and the help was denied THREE TIMES. There was no lack of information. This administration is not just incompetent, it's evil. They invented the youtube story to cover up the fact that they were running guns to Syrian rebels. You'd never find that out here. That's probably your problem.

Two drones, a gunner ship and jets less than an hour away. Obama watched video in real time and did nothing. He needs to go in November. He is a disgrace.

The world knows now that the president knew about this 2 hours after it started. He is making a bad situation worse by continuing to lie for over a month now. They were watching live as it unfolded. Three times they were refused help. Who refused. Not the military I am sure. No Commander would tell his people to "stand down" during an attack. So it must have been someone in the WH. Why won't they show the video they have. Everyone knows there was a drone recording the entire event. Why did the pres say it was the you tube video when he knew it was a lie? If he didn't want us to know why not just say they couldn't release the info? So many questions and four Americans dead. Imagine how they felt, waiting for help that would never come to rescue them. They are the true heroes. God Bless them.

Rear Admiral Charles M. Gaouette, General Carter Ham, Tyrone Woods, Glen Doherty. Are these men being made scapegoats for the dismal performance and failure of the administration in Washington, D.C.? Americans are demanding answers NOW–not six months or one year down the road.

The performance of the administration is nothing more than an ongoing, gigantic cover-up conducted at the highest levels in D.C. to ensure Obama be re-elected.

Were two military officers relieved of their duties because they refused to “stand down” when requests were made from Benghazi for military help?

Were two Americans, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, murdered by terrorists because the administration officials in Washington, D.C. refused to send aid and relief to them, but instead ordered them to “stand down?” Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty refused to “stand down” and went back to the Consulate from the Annex to save Americans under attack there. They did save Americans from the Consulate but were unable to find the Ambassador and Sean Smith. They then returned to the Annex and were murdered.

The highest levels of the administration in Washington, D.C. did nothing to save these men’s lives. It is a cover-up, and they are guilty of murder.

What the Obama Administration could have done during the seven hour interval of fighting at the Consulate and Annex in Benghazi is a serious matter, but most crucial is what decisions the Obama Administration made to insure the safety of the Consulate BEFORE the 9/11 anniversary date. No marine guard detachment, no insurance of libyan government security protections, no fast reaction plan, an easily breachable compound and the should have been heavily tightened security on 9/11 (certainly, as noble as his intentions were, the Ambassador should not have been in Benghazi on 9/11) – all spelled poor preparation. This is not Monday morning is the job of the administration to plan all these contingencies in advance and to be smart about all existing threats. If they cannot match security with the threat level, then it is time to close the Consulate and get out of Dodge until things improve. This is SOP in the State Department.

Why was Stevens in Benghazi on the anniversity of 9/11? He already knew his security had been stripped away. No one ordered Stevens to go there, he made a very foolish choice. In any "investigation", let's find out why Stevens made such a foolish decision. This isn't all Obama's fault! Then report the names of congress who voted to strip embassies of security funding!!!

To date there have been nearly 1000 replies about the coverup of Benghazi. Most of the respondents I have read are incensed, frustrated that people in power could care so little for Americans in service to their country. I don't think those thousand are the only Americans who feel this way. You could probably find thousands of others ranting in similar subject comment-o-spheres trying from their little corner to make someone tell the truth. Meanwhile, no one at CNN is reading these, anyway, because it simply provides an impotent outlet for our frustrations. If we were smart, we'd be like Occupy Wall street, and find a nifty name to march on Washington, bring in busloads of people and just wait out the announcement that someone is ready to tell the whole truth and nothing else. But, then that wouldn't be all that smart, because CNN and NBC and CBS and ABC (who have I forgotten?) would find something to write about that was much more vital-someone in Hollywood who is getting a divorce, wants to adopt a baby from the Outback, or a spider that has re-routed a whole highway project. I just don't think this is effective. I wrote my Congressman. Forget the news people. They only write Orwellian pablum to give the hungered masses so the movers and shakers won't be bothered by them.

The Mosaic of lies, deceits and state-sponsored terrorism:
The hidden real truth about Benghazi

      – Doug Hagmann (Bio and Archives)  Sunday, October 28, 2012
      (28) Comments | Print friendly | Subscribe | Email Us
Most people know that we’ve been lied to about the attacks in Benghazi, but few realize the extent of those lies or the hidden secrets they cover. After all, the lie is different at every level. Thanks to a well placed source with extensive knowledge about the attack, the disturbing truth is slowly beginning to emerge and is lining up with information contained in my previous articles published here weeks ago (Here, Here and Here). The truth reveals the most serious situation in the world today as it involves the interests and destinies of us all.

      A mosaic of lies
According to the U.S. government, Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed during a spontaneous protest at the consulate office in Benghazi by a frenzied crowd of Muslims outraged over an obscure internet video. Recently released “sensitive but not classified e-mails” from Stevens to the U.S. Department of State painted a picture of poor security for U.S. personnel and the embassy, which was obviously true but had little to do with the events of September 11, 2012. The failure to dispatch an extraction team or otherwise rescue the men during a firefight that lasted upwards of nine grueling and tortuous hours was not the result of any intelligence failure, but caused by our unwillingness to widen the conflict and expose the nature and scale of our true mission in Benghazi.

Based on information provided by my source and corroborated elsewhere, the official account by administration officials is a mosaic of lies that were necessary to cover the unpalatable truth of covert actions taking place in Libya, Syria, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon. The primary objective of our covert actions was to secretly arm anti-Assad “rebels” in Syria by funneling arms from Libya to Syria via Turkey, with other destinations that included Jordan and Lebanon.  Regarding the threat to Stevens and the other murdered Americans, the truth will reformat the persistent question posed to government officials, from UN Ambassador Susan Rice to White House Spokesman Jay Carney and others from “how could you not have known” to “how could you have done these things?”

First, it is important to understand that Ambassador Stevens, Sean Smith, Glen Dougherty and Tyrone Woods were not killed at a consulate office in Benghazi—as there is not such office there. They died at one of the largest CIA operations centers in the Middle East, which was located in Benghazi and served as the logistics headquarters for arms and weapons being shipped out of the post-Qaddafi Libya.

Although the U.S. government insisted that Stevens was involved in securing and destroying the numerous caches of arms and weapons once under the control of Qaddafi, the operation was more complex than that. The visual accounts of weapons being destroyed were indeed real, but those weapons were not operational. The working weapons were actually separated and transported to holding facilities for their eventual use in Syria. Russia was fully aware of this operation and warned the U.S. not to engage in the destabilization of Syria, as doing so would endanger their national security interests. Deposing Assad, as despotic as he might be, and replacing him with a Muslim Brotherhood-led regime would likely lead to unrestrained Islamic chaos across the region.

      The Turkish warning
According to my source, Ambassador Stevens was in Benghazi on September 11, 2012 to meet with his Turkish counterpart, who reportedly warned Stevens that the operation was compromised. They met in person so that Stevens could be shown overhead satellite images, taken by the Russians, of nefarious activities taking place in Turkey. But just what were these nefarious activities?

It is reasonable to suspect that these activities were more dire than just your average “gun running” operation. Since the overthrow of Qaddafi, it is estimated that upwards of 40 million tons of weapons and arms were shipped out of Libya to Syria. But it was also known inside intelligence circles that Qaddafi possessed chemical weapons in addition to numerous surface-to-air missiles. Could it be that Russia obtained unmistakable surveillance footage of the anti-Assad “rebels” being shown how to load chemical payloads onto missiles inside Turkey near the border of Syria? Weapons, of course, that were shipped from Libya by the CIA in conjunction with various Muslim Brotherhood rebel groups.  If so, such weapons could be used as a “false flag” type of operation—one that would be implemented to “set-up” Assad by making it appear that he was using these weapons on forces dedicated to his overthrow.

The blowback by the international community would be swift and punishing, and the entirety of the civilized world would be demanding his overthrow. NATO would then be used to expedite his ouster, and Russia’s moral position within the international community would be weakened. Was the meeting held to show Stevens that the operation was compromised and that they had to stop?

      A Nation/State sponsored attack?
While the administration asserts that the attack in Benghazi was conducted by a group of rebels acting alone, the facts seem to indicate otherwise. The level of coordination was such that we did not deploy military assets, located just an hour or two away by air, to rescue Stevens and the others at the CIA operations center in their time of need. If, as the administration contends, that the attack was perpetuated by a group of frenzied rebels, our military could have easily handled them in short order. So why was there no rescue operation?

Perhaps the statements made yesterday by Leon Panetta, U.S. Secretary of Defense provides some insight if one analyzes the essence of those statements. Among other things, Panetta said that “...the basic principle is that you don’t deploy forces into harm’s way without knowing what’s going on…” Well, it has been confirmed we did know what was taking place on the ground in Benghazi, so exactly what did Panetta mean by this statement?

Against the backdrop of the official story, it makes little sense. If, however, one considers the alternative, that the attack was coordinated and was a nation/state sponsored attack, then it becomes clearer. Panetta and the highest levels of this administration likely knew exactly what we were doing, and knew that the operation was compromised. They knew, or had reason to believe, that the attack was being conducted at a nation/state level in response to our covert operation in Libya and arming the anti-Assad Syrian opposition.

Although Russia figures prominently here, Iran now comes into focus as Russia is not likely to directly engage U.S. forces. They must, however, protect their interests. Much like we were using anti-Assad forces to advance our objectives in Syria, Russia was using Iranian-backed forces to protect theirs. It appears that the attacks were conducted or facilitated by Iranian assets—perhaps as many as three teams of assets in Benghazi.

As the White House and other agencies monitored intelligence in real-time, they faced a dilemma. They knew that the nation/state sponsored attack teams were lying in wait for U.S. rescue forces to arrive, which is the reason the fight did not conclusively end sooner. They did not know exactly where all of the attack teams were, but knew they were present based on signal communication intercepts. Could they risk such exposure by deploying a rescue team to Benghazi, only to end up with another Black Hawk down type scenario? In addition to that scenario, the entire operation now becomes exposed for what it is. Take another look at Panetta’s statement in that context. Does it now make more sense? Bad PR in an election year, no?

As daylight approached with no response from the U.S. and no aid to the Americans under fire, the attack teams had to disperse into the cover of the remaining darkness, but not before their mission was accomplished. And sadly, it was.

From the day of attack in Benghazi, Iran has been engaged in a full spectrum attack on the U.S. and NATO across the board involving embassies, bombing and even cyber attacks. All of this is the fallout from the arms and weapons smuggling operation, which was far greater than understood by the Western media.

Russia has now moved their contingent of S-400 missiles into much of Syria in anticipation of NATO establishing an “air cap” over Syria. A ten-mile “buffer zone” along Syria’s border has been created for Syrian refugees, but it also acts as a catalyst for the encroachment into Syrian territory. It sets the stage for further advancement and erosion of Syrian land, incrementally, of course.

It is also of critical importance to note that last weekend, Russia completed large-scale exercises of their Strategic Nuclear Forces under the watchful command of President Vladimir Putin. These were the first such nuclear exercises conducted since the fall of the Soviet Union.

To those with discernment, it is obvious that we are at the precipice of World War III. Putin himself stated as much, noting that WW III will not start in Iran but Syria, his own “red line in the sand.”

CNN… the big question is WHY you aren’t digging deeper into the coverup… and WHY you aren’t asking hard questions of the Administration? It’s appalling that this isn’t “front page” coverage every day until we get the real answers…. who covered this up? who issued the “stand down” orders? why isn’t the POTUS telling us all the details, even though he says he is? The American public MUST know…. and now, not three months from now.

You didn't elect CNN. You may not have elected your own Congressional Representatives, but you probably voted. Whoever holds office representing your state is accountable to you. CNN is not. They have their own agenda. WRITE AND CALL YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS and ask for them to intervene now, not after the election. Quit wasting time here. I wrote mine. Write yours, and if your work and means permit travel,go to Washington and bring a sign with a brief message. But don't expect CNN to cover it. They'll be all over what some actress or singer is doing.

We deserve to know what happened and WHY Office Woods's requests/pleads went unanswered by our Govenerment. We need to know NOW what the White House is NOT telling us. Please don't buy into their excuse that it needs to be after the Election!!!!! WE HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW, BEFORE THE ELECTION*!^!!!!!

If anyone needs to know who to vote for, just ask yourself one question... Why is it that the hearings for the Benghazi attacks are scheduled AFTER the elections? Then you'll know who to vote for. Obama does not care one bit about our Ambassadors, our security personnel, the CIA, or our Military. And Joe Biden is so Socially inept that he can't even think of appropriate words to say to a grieving father of a former Navy SEAL who voluntarily gave up his life to protect the people that the President refused to protect.

CNN You should be ashamed of yourselves! I have read and trusted you as a news orginization for years. Unfortunately you can not seem to report the real news. Media is powerful and you are corrupt. You have the opportunity to bring the world the stories that all should know. Instead you have grown into cowards. This is an absolute outrage. Im standing up as an Independant American and calling your bluff. I will speak to anyone and everyone that will listen with even half and ear about the PURE NEGLIGENCE that you, other media outlets, and the Administration have shown. You are no longer news casters, you are no longer one of the great reporters. You have turned a blind eye to what news is suppose to be, the whole story, the facts, no matter what side of the political coin they may land on. SHAME ON YOU CNN. I can not even come close to putting into words what you have really done here and how appauled I am. I hope and pray that we will one day have a news orginization or a 'lone wolf reporter' who seeks and speaks the truth without fear or agenda. I am utterly dissapointed and angry. Without the unbaised truth I can never trust in you again.

This is for Rita I am so sick and tired of the hole WMD in Iraq. Google National Ground Intelligence Center then look for a report that went to Congress about the over 500 WMD in and around Bagdad. Then ask your self why has the Army's WMD response teams have been doing 6 months rotations to Iraq from the begining to at least 2007. I was there where were you? Now what about the 2 CNN people that had to get treated for nerve agent in 2003? If we can’t protect our Consulate and the staff assigned to any Foreign Embassy, then how can we protect our citizens who travel to any foreign land? The Benghazi, Afghanistan Terrorist attack against our Consulate, was another success for the terrorist against the USA; they now have succeeded in another attack directly on USA soil. They (Terrorist) are going to embellish this as a Great Jihad moment against the Infidel Americans and no doubt will be rejuvenated and gain new recruits to join their Terrorist Idealistic believes. My concern is our current government (President Obama’s Administration) doesn’t want to engage these terrorist any further and that is “Mission Incomplete” Whether it is the World Trade’s Twin Towers in NY City, The Pentagon in DC or Flight 93 in PA, or whether it is 3,000 killed or 4 killed, they have again killed Americans and we need to avenge these deaths. Secretary Panetta stated about this we “Could not put forces at risk”. I say we are putting every American at risk if we don’t move heaven and earth to protect our Embassies and citizens anywhere that our State Department allows our citizens to travel. That is what our Military does, they are the risk takers and they “swear to defend and protect” not to do situational analysis and then allow citizens to die, because it is too risky. The problem is, I feel; President Obama doesn’t want any more troops in any conflicts until after the elections and that is the underlining problem, he (President Obama) took the safe way out over the Benghazi attacks and now we look like cowards in the eyes of the Terrorist and the rest of the world

      Wait a minute!
Ambassador Stevens' security was stripped due to congressional action (including Paul Ryan) that reduced funds for ambassadors world wide! Stevens chose to be in Benghazi on 9/11, no one ordered him to go there! He knew full well that security would be lacking. Why on earth travel to such a dangerous and be there on 9/11??? Stevens made a very foolish decision! Finding someone else to blame is just as foolish! Stevens obviously screwed up, not Obama! Congress (including Paul Ryan) screwed up as well!

Funding had nothing to do with it. Resources were available and ready and some were on location but were told to stand down. The blame goes to the chain of command as far as it goes. Panetta said it was because they did not have enough real time info. The question is, with all the real time info they had why couldn’t they see the available resources was needed?
On the funding side, defense budget cuts are an Obama proposal and Romney wants to maintain military strength.
If our security in the CIA and State the ambassador should be able to go anywhere.

Obviously, Stan gets his misinformation from CommieNewsNetwork. The Ryan budget (which doesn't specify cuts to embassy security) would not take effect until 2014. The cuts in embassy security THIS YEAR are all on Obama's bloody hands.

        October 28, 2012 at 4:04 pm |

First of all, our government does not "protect" American citizens where ever they choose to travel. Any citizen who gets into trouble abroad is responsible for his own security. Sure, our embassies will assist any citizen who makes contact and requests assistance. But NO goverment agency guarantees your safety when travelling abroad!

With a passport in hand, you are free to go almost anywhere you please (some exceptions with countries that require a visa to enter). You travel at your own risk, our government provides no security! You are expected to behave and respect the laws and customs of countries you travel to. Embassies will assit you, if you screw up, but you must get to one first!

Lt. Col. Tony Shaffer said tonight that his sources tell him that Obama was one of the people in the room watching the Benghazi attack go down and both he and Col. David Hunt agree it would have taken an order by the president to intervene. Further, Col. Hunt said that we were only 20 min away by jet and a couple of hours away by AC-130 gunships and special forces, and the decision not to intervene had to be political.

Panetta, Martin Dempsey and David Petraeus sat safely in DC watching the whole thing unfold and DID NOTHING!!! I'm sure they and everyone else trying to cover their rear-ends believe Ty Woods and Glenn Doherty got what they deserved, since they were ordered to STAND DOWN but disobeyed the order. Only 4 people died in this attack, but there were 30 people there, who would have died if these two had not disobeyed the order. They owe the next breath they take and every breath after that to these two brave heroes. I hope they will all find the courage to speak out and tell the truth about what really happened-BEFORE THE ELECTION!!!! After the election, it won't matter so much, since we will all be at the mercy of this evil, cold-hearted admin. for 4 more years–and they won't be the least bit concerned about how the American people feel.

They didn't want to create another Black Hawk down , because it would harm Obama's chances in the election, not because our military is afraid of a gun fight. Someone made the choice better four dead Americans and a win in the election over sending in help and maybe more dead Americans in a failed rescue. The 2 of them were able to protect and defend the 30 people in the safe house for 6 long hours. They had a laser sight on the people shelling them with mortars and called in exact coordinates, so the jets–they believed would come–could take the mortars out. But the jets never came. For 6 hours the jets never came. These 2 brave, selfless heroes had to have died knowing the military they served so faithfully for so many years had abandoned them. "Lions for Lambs"

In case you and your President don't know this there was little risk in sending an AC130 to deal with a mortar crew. You knew there was no danger–the problem is BHO could not have six months to decide what to do so he punted and hoped no one would survive these planned attacks. No real time info other than an email which they may or may not have read, repeated calls from those involved and at least one heroic SEAl who defied orders to rush to their aid over SEVEN hours and streaming real time video that they watched that showed a sustained and organized attack over SEVEN hours including armored personel carriers, missiles and RPGs (not the weapons of a mob angry about a movie). They knew what this was. They knew what kind of group this was if not the specific group and they knew that without help in hour one that these people would die.

The real sin is that knowing all this they continued to mention a movie trailer as one of the causes if not the cause and "terror" as an abstract secondary reason if at all.

The RINO agenda is as progressive as Barack Obama without admitting they are. Ask yourself these questions–what was Ambassador Stevens doing in Benghazi on 9/11 and who told Ambassador Rice and WH Pressor Jay Carney to sell the 'video' story the President is still trying to sell with the help of guys like Brian Williams? For a year, my military officer son was deployed in a similar situation, undercover in an Iraqi police station, 40 km from the nearest FOB. He had a satellite phone to call for backup. He told me not to worry; they would never leave him out there twisting in the wind. I know now that he was wrong. If it was politically expedient for them, this administration would have sacrificed him, then told me how brave he was and insisted they would punish his murderers. He is set to deploy again. Anderson Cooper
    Wolf Blitzer
    Candy Crowley
    Soledad O'Brien
    Erin Burnett
    John King
    Ashleigh Banfield
    Alexis Glick,
    Christiane Amanpour etc. etc.,
should all lose the right to call themselves journalists as well as decent human beings.

CNN's president, Gerhard Zeiler doesn't deserve his position either.

The entire purpose of the media's is to inform and protect the people. It is not their job to protect the president. Where is their integrity? professionalism? and common decency and there shame?

We knew that this administration had already leaked a series of classified information in order to try to pump Obama up as being tough and effective on foreign policy and to get every inch of political capitol that he could on the killing of Bin laden. Of course CNN and the rest of the "Obama Press" didn't report much on the leaks because they were so reckless that they made "their guy" look bad.

Now, because of Obama's ideology, his cowardliness and incompetency and his desire to make it appear that Al Queda "is on the run" and "normalized", four American patriots and heros are dead.

This article here Chris Lawrence is a soft piece. No probing questions. As the truth of what happened to these four men in Bengahzi is slowly being revealed, (despite the administrations lies and obsvication) I pray that people will pay attention to this story, that they will turn to Fox news since they are pretty much the only news organization reporting on it and that they will really give some thought to what exactly occurred here, before they vote. Obama arrogantly thought he could get away with this cover up (remember how he feigned indignation during the 2nd debate over the idea that he and his administration would ever politicize this terrorist attack – oops, I mean this man made disaster? He thought he could get away with it because he knew he could count on CNN and the rest of the media to cover up his incompetency, his lies and his cover up.

I agree 100%. These so called reporters just repeat White House talking points hook, line and sinker. When I was trained as a Marine I was told that we never leave our own behind. I don't recall there being a clause about gathering weeks of intellegence beforehand.

The problem is they feel they are bigger than the news–don't you get it? Most of the people you mentioned could not string together two sentences without a teleprompter–remind you of anyone else? Style trumps substance and they have to make sure their guy gets elected. Great post but asking these folks to show any semblance of balance is beyond their meager abilities!

You guys are not getting the point here. Obama wants to destroy our nation, he wants Sharia law, and he is Muslim. Stop thinking all this is by accident, he is doing exactly what he wants to do. Obviously who ever is controlling CNN "behind" the curtain is with Obama, they are NOT making a mistake, they are moving forward with a PLAN. CNN does not care people if you trust them or not, they have a clear objective, and your crying about their reporting means nothing to them. Something much deeper, and terribly wrong is going on under our noses. Better all wake up and start sending emails to congress. Typing in this blog serves no purpose, contact your reps in congress today.

Panetta "You don't deploy forces into harm's way" he in charge of the Peace Corps? What about leaving our Ambassador "in harm's way" ...that's ok? Is this a case of incompetence...or maybe thinking fast is not this President's strength...after all he needed years to find a way to catch Bin Laden, and then the ground work for that had already begun during Clinton's time – Bill started tracking Bin Laden after SS Cole, before 9/11 happened. You know, the White House probably think we are stupid and easily fooled, but if you travel a lot, you'll realize just how clever most Americans are in comparison to the rest of the world. But Barack wants us to be more like them. Michelle said it – she was never proud to be an American before Barack got elected – he probably felt the same way...really a patriotic

At least Fox News is covering this and letting the American people know what is going on. Step up CNN let the people know what the hell is going on. Protecting a dishonest President to get him re-elected. And if that happens? They have to make sure their guy gets re-elected. Some of these people are close personal friends with the President and one of them meets once a week with him to talk over policy, strategy, and propaganda. You can't really blame them since their former CEO thinks it is a good thing US service members are killing themselves faster than the enemy can kill them! CNN has become ABC, CBS, and NBC–the only exception is that they report 24/7 for the White House!

Obama won't talk or answer questions about the murders in Libya - his not talking about it and running and hiding from it is a definite sign of GUILT– its so obvious why Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama won't talk - GUILTLY RETARDS, both of them. Dirty Dogs for not sending help when the four Americans begged and begged and begged some more and then died without any help at all. And then the President soon after the Americans were killed and tortured goes to Las Vegas and partys and raises money for himself. Even if he wins the election, he and Clinton are losers, everyone knows it.

CNN is aiding in the cover up. Most Americans don't rely on the networks or cable for accurate news reporting anymore. The major networks, along with CNN have become irrelevant and deemed untrustworthy. It is unconscionable the way CNN and the networks are withholding the evidence that is mounting for this fiasco! It is all because it will harm their "beloved" Obama and help change the course of the election. I predict that after a Romney victory, evidence will "suddenly appear" for the reporters at CNN and it will finally be reported. CNN will try to save face, but it will be too late. After the media bias in this election alone, one could never see them as journalistically viable.

Whistle blowers are beginning to come out – the truth will be known (maybe not before the election, but that is what the news media are counting on as they want Obama re-elected.) If Obama is re-elected and the truth comes out, he may wish that he had not won the election because he will be facing impeachment proceedings (in spite of the protection of his attorney general). Remember, Watergate was the coverup of a burglary with no one killed, this is the coverup of something much more sinister with our ambassador and 3 others killed with State Dept, DOD and WH viewing it all in live time thanks to overhead drones and security cameras and no assistance provided. Shame on our leaders for not doing the right thing all for political reasons and shame on CNN for not investigating and reporting. My neighbors who voted for Obama last time around are shocked that this coverup is taking place and today told me they early-voted for Romney because they said "something stinks" and they could not in good conscience vote for Obama without knowing the truth. Because the senate and administration are stalling the Benghazi investigation until after the election, it could hurt Obama's re-election anyway.

When will this administration stop lying? Mr. Panetta said they didn't have enough information to attack. A C-130 gun ship could have been there from Italy in 90 minutes. Even if you don't have enough information you get send the gunship over the area and begin sending seal units on their way. The final decision is made when they get over area. The administration never even had any forces stage to get ready.

This is one of the biggest news stories ever. Watergate was about Nixon lying about a blotched burgularly. This is about 4 deaths and no attempt made to rescue these people. Hell. Obama knowing what happened went to Nevada the next day to campaign. CNN and other media not covering this story just shows how much they want Obama to win.

Walter Cronkite was a liberal but he never let his idealolgy impact his coverage. CNN and it's reporters do not provide news coverage, it's a propaganda machine for the liberals. You're assuming there was an AC-130 sitting on the ground just waiting for a call in Italy, your 90 minutes becomes more like 2 and a half hours to get the pilots into the plane, get everything fueled, get some osrt of mission brief, etc. 90 minutes is also a long time, and throwing assets in blindly without a sitrep and specific targeting package for air support is a recepie for absolute disaster. So you have no idea what you're talking about. As for not covering it, you're a liar. Flat out liar.

The White House is hoping the American people are so simple that they actually believe we were powerless to react to this attack. Our military does not EVER leave a small unit on its own when attacked. Requests for support and aid are immediately answered, no matter what the situation and I guarantee you information is always fluid and uncertain. Even so the rescue force is sent without fail. For some reason, the White House denied the small force we had on the scene the help they repeatedly asked for, to the point where a few CIA operatives actually disobeyed orders and went on their own, saving many at the cost of their own lives. True heroes died while the White House watched from above and denied them their requests for help. Why? and why will the main stream media not ask and DEMAND real answers, instead of walking the same talking points that have been discredited already.

No, that's just not true. We attempt to respond to calls for help when we can, but if you think there's never been a small unit that needed help that big army wasn't able to provide, you're incredibly naive. It happens, more than anyone would like to admit. It sucks, but we all know the risks when we sign up to serve. Anyone who trusts CNN (or most any other single news source) to give them the full story on any issue involving our current president is a fool. There was a time when the reader could read the "News" to get factual and relatively unbiased and complete information. Today, we see only the pleadings of pundits and partisan "reporters" offering material which, when worthy of puplication, belongs on the editorial pages. Unfortunately, there are those who can't tell the difference and rely on those who which offer them what they want to believe vs. factual information. An uninformed and peer-driven electorate is the result.

Whoever denied backup to the consulate in Benghazi is responsible for the needless deaths of four Americans. I want to know who ordered that backup to "stand down." The American people deserve to know the answer to that question. What is the Obama White House hiding?

    Administrtion Lied – Stevens Died

Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command - who also told the CIA operators twice to "stand down" rather than help the ambassador's team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

Former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods was part of a small team who was at the CIA annex about a mile from the U.S. consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team came under attack. When he and others heard the shots fired, they informed their higher-ups at the annex to tell them what they were hearing and requested permission to go to the consulate and help out. They were told to "stand down," according to sources familiar with the exchange. Soon after, they were again told to "stand down."

Woods and at least two others ignored those orders and made their way to the consulate which at that point was on fire. Shots were exchanged. The rescue team from the CIA annex evacuated those who remained at the consulate and Sean Smith, who had been killed in the initial attack. They could not find the ambassador and returned to the CIA annex at about midnight.

At that point, they called again for military support and help because they were taking fire at the CIA safe house, or annex. The request was denied. There were no communications problems at the annex, according those present at the compound. The team was in constant radio contact with their headquarters. In fact, at least one member of the team was on the roof of the annex manning a heavy machine gun when mortars were fired at the CIA compound. The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Spectre gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights.

CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood, though, denied the claims that requests for support were turned down.

"We can say with confidence that the Agency reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi," she said. "Moreover, no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. In fact, it is important to remember how many lives were saved by courageous Americans who put their own safety at risk that night-and that some of those selfless Americans gave their lives in the effort to rescue their comrades."

The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours - enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Fox News has also learned that two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.

Watch "Special Report Investigates: Benghazi - New Revelations" on Fox News at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, 3 p.m. on Sunday and 10 p.m. on Sunday.

A Special Operations team, or CIF which stands for Commanders in Extremis Force, operating in Central Europe had been moved to Sigonella, Italy, but they were never told to deploy. In fact, a Pentagon official says there were never any requests to deploy assets from outside the country. A second force that specializes in counterterrorism rescues was on hand at Sigonella, according to senior military and intelligence sources. According to those sources, they could have flown to Benghazi in less than two hours. They were the same distance to Benghazi as those that were sent from Tripoli. Spectre gunships are commonly used by the Special Operations community to provide close air support.

According to sources on the ground during the attack, the special operator on the roof of the CIA annex had visual contact and a laser pointing at the Libyan mortar team that was targeting the CIA annex. The operators were calling in coordinates of where the Libyan forces were firing from.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday that there was not a clear enough picture of what was occurring on the ground in Benghazi to send help.

"There's a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on here," Panetta said Thursday. "But the basic principle here ... is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on."

U.S. officials argue that there was a period of several hours when the fighting stopped before the mortars were fired at the annex, leading officials to believe the attack was over.

Fox News has learned that there were two military surveillance drones redirected to Benghazi shortly after the attack on the consulate began. They were already in the vicinity. The second surveillance craft was sent to relieve the first drone, perhaps due to fuel issues. Both were capable of sending real time visuals back to U.S. officials in Washington, D.C. Any U.S. official or agency with the proper clearance, including the White House Situation Room, State Department, CIA, Pentagon and others, could call up that video in real time on their computers.

Tyrone Woods was later joined at the scene by fellow former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, who was sent in from Tripoli as part of a Global Response Staff or GRS that provides security to CIA case officers and provides countersurveillance and surveillance protection. They were killed by a mortar shell at 4 a.m. Libyan time, nearly seven hours after the attack on the consulate began - a window that represented more than enough time for the U.S. military to send back-up from nearby bases in Europe, according to sources familiar with Special Operations. Four mortars were fired at the annex. The first one struck outside the annex. Three more hit the annex.

A motorcade of dozens of Libyan vehicles, some mounted with 50 caliber machine guns, belonging to the February 17th Brigades, a Libyan militia which is friendly to the U.S., finally showed up at the CIA annex at approximately 3 a.m. An American Quick Reaction Force sent from Tripoli had arrived at the Benghazi airport at 2 a.m. (four hours after the initial attack on the consulate) and was delayed for 45 minutes at the airport because they could not at first get transportation, allegedly due to confusion among Libyan militias who were supposed to escort them to the annex, according to Benghazi sources.

The American special operators, Woods, Doherty and at least two others were part of the Global Response Staff, a CIA element, based at the CIA annex and were protecting CIA operators who were part of a mission to track and repurchase arms in Benghazi that had proliferated in the wake of Muammar Qaddafi's fall. Part of their mission was to find the more than 20,000 missing MANPADS, or shoulder-held missiles capable of bringing down a commercial aircraft. According to a source on the ground at the time of the attack, the team inside the CIA annex had captured three Libyan attackers and was forced to hand them over to the Libyans. U.S. officials do not know what happened to those three attackers and whether they were released by the Libyan forces.

Thank god you printed that becasuse it's clear that this so-called "news" organization is hiding information and lying to protect Obama. No wonder no one pays attention to CNN. I just got on the site to see how lame they are.

Why can't you all wait until the investigation is complete. All this speculation about who heard shots and should they run out to help. What could 3 more soldiers against 150 rebels have done except wind up dead. These people weren't shooting water pistols and didn't Tyrone Woods lose his life anyway.

This sounds like a bunch of manufactured BS, how did the writer speak to Tyrone Woods when he lost his life. Why don't you wait until the information has be obtained by the CIA. After all Bush got word of an attack on the orginal 911 at least a month in advance, could he stop the attack. I don't think so, some 3000 Americans lost their lives that day. Next day quarterbacking always wins, but when the game is going on no one knows what is going to happen.

This is absolute BS. The American people are NOT STUPID. They know now that everyone is lying and the President told people to "stand down." He is personally responsible for the death of the ambassador and military. We know that within minutes the SYSTEM mandates that Obama be informed immediately.

I watch for an article daily on CNN as well as live newscasts – zip nada zero. Since we learned that those men called for help – with coordinates of the location of the rocket launcher, knew that there were two drones with real-time video, audio and operators on the ground – this blows Panetta out of the water.

Where is the reporting? The American people need to know the truth!

Let's get this story on the main page..front and center..give us the information and let us decide what we believe...don't take it upon yourself to hide this story at the bottom of your page..and hope that no one notices. You are not in charge of what news we get to are in charge of reporting the news..not shaping the news. We all know that you are trying to make sure that Obama doesn't get caught up in the hype and distortions...wrong.

Exactly. This is why after studying journalism in college, I refuse to get a job in this mess. The American people should be able to make up their own minds about factual information. Too bad CNN is too weak to report it.

Why so much high level cover up going on? It can only mean that the truth is very ugly. What is even worse is the shameless silence by most of the MSM. Is there no one who will stand up for the four murdered Americans? Come on America, you can do better than this.

Most of what he said is not true. Standard procedure for an embassy under armed attack is to send help – no matter where it is. Details are nice but do not stop a response. That has been the case for the past 30 years. We have response units available for this very purpose. In fact you do deploy forces into harms way if you know an embassy is under attack. Details besides the fact there is an attack are not relevant. Heck, swat teams do it all the time, it is no different for the military. Either POTUS or the general in charge of the area of responsibility had to make the decision to stop a response. Not even Panetta has that authority in regards to the military response. It is automatic. Panetta is doing nothing more than covering for that decision maker.

PLEASE do what true journalists do and go after the real information on the Benghazi attack. It has gotten to the point that Americans can't believe a word from anyone in this administration, and the media is not pushing for more information. 6 weeks is WAY too long to "find out what happened". Obama was out beating his chest about killing Bin Laden the next day. All media outlets should be investigating rather than helping to cover up to get Obama re-elected.

Bush, Bush, Bush,Bush, Bush....he's gone..YOU get over it. Besides if you would take the time to do some research you would find that all that crap your blabbering is just that and has no actual facts to back it up. You have OBVIOUSLY been too glued to the main stream, liberal media where you learn nothing and repeat nonsense. Do yourself a favor and grit your teeth and listen to Rush Limbaugh or Mark Levin for one week. You'll be surprized what you'll learn that you're not getting here.

Why is CNN not covering any news on Benghazi and the attack on our embassy? That is big news as it is an
attack on the USA and killing Americans.

Mr. Panetta, Americans were already at risk and you watched it go down and did nothing. Four Americans dead and our government stood by and did nothing and now there is an appparent cover up and down play of the incident. The only news source reporting is Fox. It broke my heart to hear the father of one of fallen hero's recount how his son died 6 hrs after the initial attack. Three requests for help went out and were met with silence. Why the silence...every American should be shouting out for answers and this includes all the mainstream media outlets. It indicates to me that they are aiding and abetting the coverup. I wonder why?
