Panetta on Benghazi attack: 'Could not put forces at risk'

By Chris Lawrence

The U.S. military did not get involved during the attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, last month because officials did not have enough information about what was going on before the attack was over, Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta said Thursday.

At a Pentagon news briefing, Panetta said there was no "real-time information" to be able to act on, even though the U.S. military was prepared to do so.

"You don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on," Panetta said. "(We) felt we could not put forces at risk in that situation."

A defense official provided more context on Panetta's comments about the decision-making involved in not sending U.S. troops to the consulate being attacked in Benghazi.

He said there was a drone aloft but not directly over the area at the time the attack began.

He said the drone was redirected and arrived in time to record some of the attack. But he described what the drone saw as "looking down, seeing a bunch of buildings and fires, a lot of chaos on the ground."

The real Benghazi lessons

He said it was not enough to discern exactly what was happening.

"We didn't have good eyes on the situation. There were security forces there on the ground, but they're in the middle of a firefight - not sending a Sitrep (Situational Report).

The official could not reveal the specific reaction times for the military's Fleet Anti Terrorism Security Teams, which are classified, but said "it would be physically impossible for them to get there in time to intervene in that attack from say, Rota, Spain."

He cited the time it takes just to get their transportation in the air. The official said "these situations normally deteriorate over time ... but usually in a few days, not two hours." He explained that even quick-reaction teams are often positioned for places where intelligence shows a "deteriorating situation" near an embassy.

The official also provided context for Panetta's and Gen. Martin Dempsey's remarks about criticism on the response.

"It's not helpful to provide partial answers," Dempsey said. And Panetta criticized what he called "Monday morning quarterbacking."

The defense official said it was directed at criticism coming from pundits and Capitol Hill.

"In perfect hindsight, yes - we'd do it differently. But how it looks weeks later is not how it looked at the time.

"You had the movie, the 9/11 anniversary and unrest in various countries in that region. All that factored into the decision to put troops on a heightened state of alert. But that doesn't mean forces are positioned everywhere in the world, ready to run to the rescue. We're not the fire department. And there was no actionable intelligence that Benghazi was going to be attacked on 9/11."

Next month, the Democratic-led Senate Intelligence Committee will hold a closed hearing in Washington to review the security situation and intelligence surrounding the Benghazi attack, according to a committee announcement released Thursday.

The hearing, not open to the public, will review intelligence collection and threat reporting in Libya and other Middle East countries before the September 11 attack on the U.S. mission as well as what was known and who is responsible for the attack, among other issues.

A number of government investigations continue into what happened on the attack.

  1. Cover Up

According to Panetta's logic, we would never be able to respond to any crisis until after it is over and we have all the facts analyzed. C'mom CNN keep digging on this story. There is a lot more to be "uncovered"!

We can not ignore this, we can not wait. The world is watching, and we need a true leader. How can Ms. Clinton take responsibility before the President did? What happened to Nixon or Clinton when they Lied to the country? This is to much negative drama for one president: Rev. Wright, 25 years at a all black America hating church, Sgt Crowley, doing now what he said he wouldn't do in 2008, Acorn, 2016 ( the movie), false promise's, unqualified Zars, etc. etc.

The embassy called when attacked, multiple times. They said they were under attack. They asked for help before and during the attack. CIA operatives, who were ex spec ops, requested permission to help and were told to stand down. They didn't even start to deploy the reaction forces.

Americans were left to die because they weren't aware of "what's going on." Our people deserve better than that. If they will leave our people to die this time because we don't have all the details, then they make excuses what keeps them from doing it again?

CNN is a disgrace when it comes to honestly reporting all relevant stories in the news. CNN is not the good news source it once was, many years ago. Now it only selectively reports and has essentially become nothing more than a mouthpiece for the present administration.

If anyone at CNN has any journalistic integrity, America would like to have these questions answered by the President:

    1. On 9-11-2012, emails were sent stating that the consulate was under attack, when were you made aware of this?

    2. It was testified to in a congressional hearing by Ms. Lamb that events were unfolding in real time and they were watching in real time. Did you watch any of this or go to the situation to see what was developing?

    3. You said that you immediately did three things. One of those three was to increase security at all diplomatic installations, effective immediately. If this was the case, then why was CNN able to go to the burned out consulate and retrieve, among other thing the ambassador's personal journal?

    4. Most importantly, who was in charge of this country when all of this happened?

My heart goes out to the victims of the Benghazi attack. Hindsight is always 20/20 and mistakes will be made. We have young military men and women who will risk their lives to defend Americans. Their bravery should be praised. A majority of them are born to defend us and die young. Some suffer life long injuries, both mental and physical. I honor these men and women because I could not do the same. It's not that I value my life, because I see life as something one has to endure, but what the military endures is far beyond my scope.

Can we please put an end to our fighting amongst ourselves for at least one day. I need to feel that we are all brothers and sisters who have differences of opinions, but underneath it all, we are one.

I appreciate your concern for our military personnel. But don't you think it dishonors them if, as happened in Benghazi, their pleas for back-up go ignored, their deaths treated as if they occurred at the hands of protesters, not terrorists, and the whole story is covered up? At this writing, someone named Honey BooBoo is given greater prominence on the CNN homepage than this story about the administration's cover-up.

Hindsight is 20/20 my rear end. Any idiot would know that when you are being attacked, you need reinforcements NOW. Stop making excuses for people sitting around doing nothing. The truth will come out, and it will not be pretty. And if you DON'T know what's going on, you send in armed people or assets to find out what's going on, not wait until the smoke clears. You certainly don't lie and blame a video for this whole mess.

I truly believe that what the administration was trying to do was prevent an attack. If they knew in advance that there was trouble brewing, and If they believed that sending armed forces into Benghazi would have prevented the attack, I'm sure that is what they would have done. The only reason I can reasonably conceive for them not doing so, would be because they didn't want a re-election. Even this is a stretch, because they could have lost it in others ways if needed. I don't think this is the case. I don't know why they chose the route of non-intervention, unless they thought it would have prevented an attack. Peace

Imagine how those SEALs felt as their calls for help went unheeded. If O wins re-election (god forbid), this will hang over his head for the next four years–and should.

Oh, don't you guys think it's now time to correct the cutline under the photo? That guy is not a protester–he's a terrorist.

All this finger-pointing and fact-checking and email-reading is only Obamahate cloaked in phony concern for the safety of our foreign service corps. If Obama had asked Congress to double the budget for security at all foreign embassies you would be calling him a "tax-and-spend liberal" or a "socialist" or worse. Why don't we go over and over all the intelligence, internal emails, eyewitness accounts and cries for help that went unanswered preceding and during the REAL 9/11 attack on American soil that killed almost 3000 Americans on GW's watch? You think the Bush administration handled that perfectly and told you all the facts and the absolute truth, I suppose. You people go ahead and have your Obama-bashing fun. Get all worked up. Stuff happens. Always has and always will. The world is not a safe place. Next.

After the horrible events on 9-11-2001 at least we had a president that was visible, on the job and answered questions about what happened. He had enough guts to go in front of the American people and tell us what happened. He did not go out and blame a video, or a protest or bad food in the vending machine. Obama does not have the respect for America that other presidents have had. His wife was only proud of America after he was elected. And Bush damned sure did not fly off to a fund raiser in Vegas while 4 courageous mens bodies were still warm in Libya.

It isn't hate to require a leader to be accountable and present. We did the same for Bush and Clinton. Obama is in good company. THIS is when you find the measure of a leader. Obama had his national crisis and came up wanting. I don't hate Obama, he's a good man with a wonderful family. He just didn't show the same care with our security as he does with his family in this instance. That's not hate and it's a hard lesson to learn.

Bush was never afraid to speak to the American people, the press, or anyone.

And seriously. Give up on the Bush finger-pointing. Anyone who uses him as an excuse anymore, is only making themselves look foolish and immature and lacking in any real argument to support their opinion.

Just because "things like this" happen, doesn't mean Obama should get some sort of free pass on it. Election or not, Bush or not, we are talking about *now*. Obama and his administration are directly responsible for the deaths of four Americans. They have spewed out so many different and conflicting stories, that they made their own bed on this. It's not the Republicans' fault that this issue could very well impact the election. It's his own fault.

I hate to tell you this, but a lot of blame went around after 9/11, and one of the first things said was that from now on, we are going to "connect the dots", and also have the different agencies talk to each other, which is one reason Homeland Security was created. The size of the budget is not relevant in this case. When we are attacked, we expect a response, we expect the the first priority is to protect our people in foreign locations, especially an ambassador and his mission. We should have known that on the anniversary of 9/11. we are juicy targets and we should have been prepared. This was a political ploy, and I suspect that the video excuse was cooked up way before this attack in case anything did happen, not that they knew something was going to happen, because apparently this administration is not that smart. You can make all the excuses you want, the administration blew it, and if it was a Republican president, conservatives would say the same thing, and not try to cover this up. This was a massive mistake, and people are dead.

Other reports are saying that the former Navy Seal had a laser on the attacking mortar for 4 hours from the roof of the safe house with full realtime communications asking for a smart bomb strike from the airforce an hours flight away in Italy. The report also says that CIA operatives in the area that wanted to answer the call for help were told to stand down. Twice. Two of them ignored the order and were of the 4 killed.

As a family member of the wounded warrior still at Walter Reed Hospital and the owner of the cell phone called by the media, may I correct the record on the media dialog? I heard from CNN, Fox News, ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, NY Times, Reuters and more within days of the attack. They all asked for an interview with my husband, the father of David Ubben. Seriously, is this really the issue? And before I'm attacked, please allow me to point out that I had planned to vote for Obama. Planned as in past tense.

Mr. President and Secretary Clinton, before I retired to bed on Sept. 11th I knew it was a terrorist attack from the phone calls we received. The words "protest" and "video" were never mentioned. Why did I have better infomation than you? My heart breaks for the families of the four men killed and it looked very noble to stand beside their caskets. But what about our son who was seriously wounded? In what way have you acknowledged him and his young family? Is he an embrassement and best ignored now? If, God forbid, he is permanetly disabled will he be swept under the carpet?

Ambassador Rice, I don't have any questions for you. You are obviously out of the loop completely. However, I did note that you sent a bouquet of flowers to David's hospital room. Thanks.

Can we all be Americans at this point and please stop the petty squabbling? Isn't it clear that things went horribly wrong? I was raised to respect our country's government no matter what party was in power. I was also taught that interity, honesty and responsibility were not only to be expected but demanded. It is very difficult to continue to do so.

I am so sorry your husband was wounded, and for the horrific events in Benghazi, and the others who were hurt and lost their lives. Please know that many Americans are sad and angry. We are sad when we hear of those like your husband, who put their lives on the line for us, suffer with injuries or death. We are angry because we know we are not being told the truth, so many witnesses and testimonies of people who were there and people inside of what was happening that day, and before, are telling their stories and they conflict with what the White House and this adminstration are telling the American people.

Please know there are news outlets out there trying hard day and night to get answers and demand the truth. Fox News, Breitbart, The Daily Caller, The Blaze, American Thinkers, PJ Media, Gateway Pundit, The Drudge and many others are staying on top of this. The only reason I am here is to try and shame CNN into telling the truth instead of being a propaganda tool. I used to respect CNN, I used to trust CNN but they have lost it over Fast and Furious and now Libya. I am hoping someone at CNN still cares about the truth.

It is apparent by the majority of responses to this article that Americans can see through their attempts to cover up. Nothing in the news is more important than telling the truth about what happened in Libya and answering why it happened to begin with. Why didn't they give them the security they needed? Why didn't they give them help during the attack? Why are they lying about the cause and who made those decisions? I have been in a flux of near tears since this happened, and I know many, many others are heartsick about it. Please know that we do care.

What many here fail to see is that what started as a peaceful protest was infiltrated by a sub group intent on causing harm. Now suppose the drone was harmed and Penneta gave the go ahead to fire on the protesters, the strike killing 10, 20 or more, what do you think would have happened? Don’t you think that the diplomatic staff in Tripoli would have been killed as well? What about Embassies in other nations that were facing protest, imagine the escalation when word spread that the USA has killed even more Muslims on top of the hundreds of thousands of deaths it caused in Iraq by a war based on lies?

It appears the low level of military security in Benghazi was based on an apparent governmental policy of trying to put a more softer face on the USA’s interaction with the people of Libya, which is not an easy objective to accomplish as it will take time for the entire population to trust the USA; this because the US was against their dictator then started doing business with him, even outsourcing some torture his way. Then, all of a sudden when the people rose up the US was against him, maybe the ones amongst the crowed that inflicted live fire on the consulate were victims of the outsourced torture or their friends and relatives.

The mistake of the administration was to think that the years of wrongs by the USA would be quickly forgotten just because they assisted in riding the people of a dictator whom the USA had started doing business with only one administration prior and continued to do so with up until the revolutions started.

There was not a protest of any sort, none, zilch zero. No protest period. The whitehouse did finally admit there was no protest. The protest was in Cairo and it is possible that with that protest, they were testing security before attacking Benghazi.

I'm not a US citizen and I make my evaluation from a none biased perspective after reading Right wing, Left wing and international news sources. I don't see how military action could have done anything -within the two hours that it took the attack to play out- to resolve the issue. Call in an air strike kill the attackers as well as the regular protestors and the curious by standers with a 500- 1000 pound bomb and then watch as things escalate and air strikes become required in other places.

There were NO protesters, NONE, ZERO PROTESTERS. An unmanned drone was overhead, watching and sending real time video. No one in this administration lifted a finger to help. 7 hours, no protest, no help, allowed 4 murders. CRIMINAL

Actual life impacting attack was in a short space of time, looting and protesting went on for much longer, either way I don't see what could have been done that would not make matters worst; so if someone could outline to me the steps that should have been taken to facilitate a better outcome for that day and for the days ahead please do so.

For those who think the outcome of this occurrence is good cause to pick the Mittsi over BHO, from what I see it does not matter who the American president is, the person is still controlled by the Zionist lobby. Hence, not much in the way of American foreign policy is executed for the benefit of the American people.

If you are close to an Obama campaign stop for the next week gather your friends and family, as many as you can get, and go to his rallies with big LIBYA signs and make our voice heard. We can at least do it to honor the courageous men who gave their life in this fiasco. Maybe, if enough do it, it will finally garner some attention. I am in eastern VA and will find out if Obama campaign is scheduled any where near here. We should at least try.

I am heart sick of the lies and half truths coming out of my Government. How can someone who has the "gift" of saying, I am an American, get elected to Office and then turn thier head to attrocities against this country. In my opinion it amounts to TREASON. And we look to our news services for the truth and what do we get,....mostly the same lies and half truths given by politicians. WE, the American people DESERVE better than this. Of all the news channels I used to always defend CNN for straight information and truth(as best can be determined). You now seem to be an extention of the Obama campaign. Granted FOX is slanted to the conservative view but they report more of the actual news now than you. Thanks for letting me down.

How can we believe that President Obama cares about whether we find jobs, lose our home, have health care, etc when it is not worth the risk to save the lives of those who were in Libya to represent the United States. If there were a hostage situation at a bank and the criminals were executing a hostage every hour, but the Chief of Police did nothing because it was not worth the risk of sending his officers in, how long would he have a job? We need a President that values the lives of Americans abroad, especially those in the military and that represent our country.

Im sorry and I mean no disrespect but you are the one trying to make this something that it's not. There have been emails that show they knew what was going on almost in real time. There are 4 dead because officials told the CIA office a mile away to stand down. The white house and state still continue to blame this on a video. It seems to me that CNN is trying to brush this under the rug. I voted for Obama and have been a democrat my whole life but you must give credit when it's due. Our elected leaders messed up big. The sad thing is that decisions may have been made by the WH for political reasons. The information is out there. News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent attack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command - who also told the CIA operators twice to "stand down" rather than help the ambassador's team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11.

Former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods was part of a small team who was at the CIA annex about a mile from the U.S. consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team came under attack. When he and others heard the shots fired, they informed their higher-ups at the annex to tell them what they were hearing and requested permission to go to the consulate and help out. They were told to "stand down," according to sources familiar with the exchange. Soon after, they were again told to "stand down."

Woods and at least two others ignored those orders and made their way to the consulate which at that point was on fire. Shots were exchanged. The rescue team from the CIA annex evacuated those who remained at the consulate and Sean Smith, who had been killed in the initial attack. They could not find the ambassador and returned to the CIA annex at about midnight.

At that point, they called again for military support and help because they were taking fire at the CIA safe house, or annex. The request was denied. There were no communications problems at the annex, according those present at the compound. The team was in constant radio contact with their headquarters. In fact, at least one member of the team was on the roof of the annex manning a heavy machine gun when mortars were fired at the CIA compound. The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly requested back-up support from a Spectre gunship, which is commonly used by U.S. Special Operations forces to provide support to Special Operations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights.

CIA spokeswoman Jennifer Youngblood, though, denied the claims that requests for support were turned down.

"We can say with confidence that the Agency reacted quickly to aid our colleagues during that terrible evening in Benghazi," she said. "Moreover, no one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccurate. In fact, it is important to remember how many lives were saved by courageous Americans who put their own safety at risk that night-and that some of those selfless Americans gave their lives in the effort to rescue their comrades."

The fighting at the CIA annex went on for more than four hours - enough time for any planes based in Sigonella Air base, just 480 miles away, to arrive. Fox News has also learned that two separate Tier One Special operations forces were told to wait, among them Delta Force operators.

Watch "Special Report Investigates: Benghazi - New Revelations" on Fox News at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, 3 p.m. on Sunday and 10 p.m. on Sunday.

A Special Operations team, or CIF which stands for Commanders in Extremis Force, operating in Central Europe had been moved to Sigonella, Italy, but they were never told to deploy. In fact, a Pentagon official says there were never any requests to deploy assets from outside the country. A second force that specializes in counterterrorism rescues was on hand at Sigonella, according to senior military and intelligence sources. According to those sources, they could have flown to Benghazi in less than two hours. They were the same distance to Benghazi as those that were sent from Tripoli. Spectre gunships are commonly used by the Special Operations community to provide close air support.

According to sources on the ground during the attack, the special operator on the roof of the CIA annex had visual contact and a laser pointing at the Libyan mortar team that was targeting the CIA annex. The operators were calling in coordinates of where the Libyan forces were firing from.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta told reporters at the Pentagon on Thursday that there was not a clear enough picture of what was occurring on the ground in Benghazi to send help.

"There's a lot of Monday morning quarterbacking going on here," Panetta said Thursday. "But the basic principle here ... is that you don't deploy forces into harm's way without knowing what's going on."

U.S. officials argue that there was a period of several hours when the fighting stopped before the mortars were fired at the annex, leading officials to believe the attack was over.

Fox News has learned that there were two military surveillance drones redirected to Benghazi shortly after the attack on the consulate began. They were already in the vicinity. The second surveillance craft was sent to relieve the first drone, perhaps due to fuel issues. Both were capable of sending real time visuals back to U.S. officials in Washington, D.C. Any U.S. official or agency with the proper clearance, including the White House Situation Room, State Department, CIA, Pentagon and others, could call up that video in real time on their computers.

Tyrone Woods was later joined at the scene by fellow former Navy SEAL Glen Doherty, who was sent in from Tripoli as part of a Global Response Staff or GRS that provides security to CIA case officers and provides countersurveillance and surveillance protection. They were killed by a mortar shell at 4 a.m. Libyan time, nearly seven hours after the attack on the consulate began - a window that represented more than enough time for the U.S. military to send back-up from nearby bases in Europe, according to sources familiar with Special Operations. Four mortars were fired at the annex. The first one struck outside the annex. Three more hit the annex.

A motorcade of dozens of Libyan vehicles, some mounted with 50 caliber machine guns, belonging to the February 17th Brigades, a Libyan militia which is friendly to the U.S., finally showed up at the CIA annex at approximately 3 a.m. An American Quick Reaction Force sent from Tripoli had arrived at the Benghazi airport at 2 a.m. (four hours after the initial attack on the consulate) and was delayed for 45 minutes at the airport because they could not at first get transportation, allegedly due to confusion among Libyan militias who were supposed to escort them to the annex, according to Benghazi sources.

The American special operators, Woods, Doherty and at least two others were part of the Global Response Staff, a CIA element, based at the CIA annex and were protecting CIA operators who were part of a mission to track and repurchase arms in Benghazi that had proliferated in the wake of Muammar Qaddafi's fall. Part of their mission was to find the more than 20,000 missing MANPADS, or shoulder-held missiles capable of bringing down a commercial aircraft. According to a source on the ground at the time of the attack, the team inside the CIA annex had captured three Libyan attackers and was forced to hand them over to the Libyans. U.S. officials do not know what happened to those three attackers and whether they were released by the Libyan forces.

Fox News has also learned that Stevens was in Benghazi that day to be present at the opening of an English-language school being started by the Libyan farmer who helped save an American pilot who had been shot down by pro-Qaddafi forces during the initial war to overthrow the regime. That farmer saved the life of the American pilot and the ambassador wanted to be present to launch the Libyan rescuer's new school.

CNN, ABC, CBS and NBC will eventually have to start rethinking their tendentious editing (and omission) of news which doesn’t favor their mindset. It is obvious that Fox tends to give favor to republican views. It is equally obvious that CNN and the others don’t. The market exists for one of the broadcast networks to compete for the Fox audience. The demand is there. Cable has its limits. The first broadcast network to present a news program that can lose that ‘donkey’ smell will see a flood of viewers.

I'm suprised CNN even has this story. The way the media is covering for Obama is just over the top. If the same set of facts existed with a Republican administration, they would be all over it. Face it America, the media is nothing more then a mouthpiece for the Democratics.
I want to know how Obama can lie so many lies and no on calls him on anything.
He grants asylem to illigal immigrants in direct violation of immigration law – Oh it OK it's Obama
He tell companies not to notify employee's of layoffs because it is bad for his campain – Oh its OK it's Obama
He misleads the American People of about a Terrorist Attack on 9/11 – Oh it OK it's Obama
He has an American citizen arrested for a "parole violation" in th middle of the night in front of all three network news cameras ( so they can show the Musliems he did something about the evil person who would dare make a bad movie they don't like! )
He tells employeers they must pay for birth control and abortion drugs even though it is very much against their religous beliefs.

I could go on all day. How can anyone who loves this country every vote for this guy. Even if you support the Democrates, this guy is a Soviet Style dictator socialist/communist. Get him out of office NOW!

"It's not helpful to provide partial answers," Dempsey said. And Panetta criticized what he called "Monday morning quarterbacking."

Sounds more like Monday morning back peddling. You had a drone, you had photos, you had intelligence, but still not enough to send in help for the ambassador. Yet with what little you did have (according to you) was enough to blame a video and continue to blame the video even though the rest of the world had a pretty good idea it had absolutely nothing to do with the video. After all, in such a controlled country, how many over there actually saw the video?

Not enough information to send help for the 4 people at the consulate, but certainly enough to blame a video. This administration is a disgrace. I feel sorry for our military and anyone else who serves under the current administration. Sad. So very sad.

Romney asked him if he claimed to have called it an act of terror (exact words), Candy Crowley said he did, and she was completely accurate. There is a video of the President and Secretary Clinton the next day saying those exact words. Did you notice that Romney himself has dropped the issue? He called it an "act of terror", and then he said it was the "youtube video" and felt like hopping on a plane to Vegas thinking that it would all be brushed under the table, and then the Sec of State said they're responsible, and then he comes and says, he's responsible and not the State dept, and then the Sec of Defense is now saying they didn't have enough information and that they don't put military in harm's way. Uh, I put myself in harm's way for my cat. The local police dept. puts themselves in harm's way every time they pull someone over. The fire dept. puts themsleves in harm's way when they run into a building on fire. But the mlitary doesn't put itself in harm's way for an initially claimed "act of terror", for a U.S. ambassador and those supporting him?

Can't you see? Their story never added up. Not only that, but it also revealed that they tried to lie to Americans (and the world), and thought they'd get away with it.

Why is Romney quiet about it? Because it all speaks for itself. Obama and his admin may as well nail the final nail on their own coffins and let us give someone else a chance to prove transparency. If they (Romney) proves later on that he isn't transparent either, we'll get rid of him too. it's not about Republican or Democrat. It's about who can treat this country and its people the way it deserves. You fail, you're out. Hopefully...

I did hear the caller to Rush Limbaugh. And I listen to ABC every morning. I was brought up that I should be ashamed if I became a sheeple. My father said, "Most people say 'I think' when all they've done is listen to a news report or read a paper. What I see the general illness here is, is that nobody is willing to actually listen, read, weigh the materials, and draw their own conclusions. I don't think I'm better than you, just more fortunate than most of you because I was taught to think for myself. That being said, I think it is possible that the military was truly afraid of repeating the Carter Debacle and did not send aid for that reason. I think the Obama administration lives in a cloud of Progressive smoke that prevents them from distinguishing dogma from reality. I think their politics did and do, as the politics of other Presidential minions of the past has affected military decisions because their politics dictate policy. And I think that the Obama administration and everyone in the Progressive movement hopes no one under 30 never reads 1984, studies the Cold War, or the effects of Mao and the Revolutionary Guard on China, or reads Life and Death in Shanghai. I think it was a political decision to decrease security repeatedly in Benghazi in the first and second place, and the political climate that affected the decisions made on 9-11 in the White House and therefore down the chain of command. The buck stops at the White House, brothers and sisters.

Sean-That's what I want to know! Latest news indicates that navy seal Woods was at the Annex, told to "stand down" and went there anyway. Because there was no backup, he was eventually killed. It is his father who is now dubbing those in charge "murderers"!

If this was just a "protest" started from a "video" that the Administration thought it was all along, why would it be thought of as something that would be "putting our troups in harms way"? Wouldn't it be seen as crown control, something that we immediately send police and the National Guard into in every situation? IT'S BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT IT WAS WAAAAAY MORE THAN THAT AND THEY LET THOSE PEOPLE DIE!!!!!! I'm embarrassed for the current administration, sad for the American people that have been lied to, and devestated for the families that have lost loved ones. The Administration should be ashamed of themselves and the way this was handled. I agree.....OMUSTGO, along with his supporting cast.

CNN, ABC, and most other MSMs should be ashamed for either not reporting on the Benghazi cover up or trying to spin it. I wish people would refuse to watch them until they want to actually start reporting the news and not trying to spin it or ignore it all together if the news looks like it may be bad for Obama. None of these news stations actually report the news and are basically just spin doctors for Obama. It's disgusting and I hope their ratings fall so low they either have to do real reporting or go belly up all together.

I am heartsick about Benghazi and the loss of four Americans. No one with an ounce of sense would believe what Secretary Clinton, Leon Panetta or even our President said about this. ("It was the video.") It was a tragedy that will be remembered, along with the failure of the US to protect their own.
I am very disappointed that Fox seems to be the only one covering this. A debacle of this magnitude would ordinarily be a continuing headline at every news source and yet - where are our journalists?!?
A very sad time for America.

With all due respect to CNN, there's a breaking video report posted on the FOX News Web site of Megyn Kelly interviewing Charles Woods, the father of slain Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods. (Mr. Woods is also an attorney.) His comments are powerful – deeply critical but expressed nobly. I highly recommend that readers tune in to this video. Other significant details have surfaced within the hour regarding requests for security as the attack unfolded. Like so many Americans, I'm still trying to piece together what really happened – and why. I wish to be respectful of leaders in office (in both parties), but what's surfacing surrounding this tragedy in Benghazi is deeply disturbing. As I mentioned in a previous post, my father was a diplomat and a military strategist. I agree with Mr. Woods that part of leadership is having the courage to address difficult situations, no matter how inopportune. I'm confused by President Obama's reluctance to hold a press conference. Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods risked his career, his life. He and each of these fallen heroes are portraits of courage. I thank the press for any further details they can provide – accurately and objectively – on this immense loss.

It use to be that CNN was a reliable news provider.
Like Clinton's quote....."Go read PBS or BBC and see what they're reporting, they are the least bias news agencies around."
It's just a shame our MAINSTREAM MEDIA cannot be credible; just another liberal lying machine.
Fox new is increasing viewers....have they been coming from CNN? I don’t want opinions just investigations of the TRUTH.
I cannot believe that you see no story regarding the truth about Benghazi.
At least in Watergate the President wasn’t implicated in DEATH.

It seems apparent to me that Obama was concerned that any aid/rescue might turn into an Iran redux.
I suspect that the decision to do nothing was a *political* decision, and had nothing whatsoever to do with the well-being of the Ambassador and staff. After all, Obama is a purely political animal.
The vigorously promoted 'video' cover-up is inexplicable. An overlooked element of that ploy, is that Obama actually *promoted* the video, thereby encouraging discontented elements of Islamic countries.

Thats what we do! Its in our DNA All combat situations are unclear, but if our comrades are in need.....we go!! This is classical FUBAR and from the joint chiefs up should be driven from office.

where were the marines? I am a 9 yr. Disabled Vietnam Vet who has had his share of run-ins with them. But, once more Washington has slapped them in the face. Another Democratic president to force peace on the Muslims when they only wanted to fight. Carter had 52 Americans locked up for 444 until Ronnie Ray-gun was elected. Now another man of the same stripe has put American lives on the line and lost the gamble.

where were the marines? The corp got a dirty deal in Tehran and now in Libya. The first thing older vets ask is where were the marines. Older corp vets have no answer because 45 days after this attack, there are still no believable awnsers comming from the admin. As I said before, I've had run-ins with them so I can say from experance, if the place had been staffed as it should have been, the attack would have ended different, Ask any vet who they want to have supporting them, Marines. There is no back-up in their nature, there is no excuse offered why they were not there, but for the four that died, I hopesome one is wasking their hands and muttering out out Damn spot.

For the Seal, all I can say is Simper Fi.

Reagan, besides working out a deal for IRAN to KEEP the hostages so he could get elected also sold weapons to Iran, against Congress and lied about it. Then funded death squads in Central America so his friends could make a profit. I'm sorry but anyone who holds Reagan up as an example is either mentally challenged or willfully ignorant. Cmon now lets can the partisan politics and see that theres little to no difference between the two candidates. They both beat feet to keep Ron Paul out of the elections for wanting to crack down on banks including the Fed.

Both Romney and Obama (Obamney) are the same on the economy, on foreign policy, energy. Both wanna push a bigger police state here in the US, further eroding what little rights we have left and using military drones to spy on everyone. Id love to see these candidates featured in a REAL debate with REAL questions. Furthermore God forbid we need a choice of actual candidates and not two mouthpieces for Wallstreet CEOS and Bankers.

I can see that getting through to conservatives is impossible at this point, not sure why that would suprise me since they've literally spent the last 4 years refusing to help America simply to try and win political points. I will leave you conservatives with this though... 1. Fox News is full of crap, they put up "facts" and "witnesses" that said Obama wasn't a citizen as well and you morons ate that up too, so you have no hope in my eyes, you're drones and you don't even see it. 2. Obama is going to win this election. You might disagree, but that is the truth, He's winning in the majority of swing states even if the margin is small they're still going his way... You will all be a bunch of losers on Election day, i hope you just crawl back into your holes because this one is in the bag. I'll be here to laugh at you on election day.
    3. I know this is the furthest long shot but, i might as well give it a shot... When Obama is re-elected... Will you please try to stop following Fox news all day long like it's a reliable news source? You know it's a Right Wing News source, there is a reason Fox is only reporting specific things and other news sources aren't reporting the same thing... It's because Fox is fake... they're a political propoganda machine. You ALL should know this... If you want truly unbiased news you should seek out PBS and other sites that are not tied to a specific Party... All this does is create a horde of Conspiracy theory nutjobs like those in this blog today, you look really stupid to everybody that's Democrat or Independent. You seriously do, you look really dumb and mindless. In the end of this, hopefully you'll all settle down and just get over it... the economy is on it's way back and in 4 years the country will be on track and looking for a new leader... so lets just look forward to the future... oh and very lastly... Remember... Politicians are politicians... They aren't like you and me... All of them are Rich and they don't know what it's like to really grow up and live in America today... So be nicer to your fellow Americans that maybe believe differently than you about politics. Politics aren't the most important thing in life... Family, friends, God and Country should always come before Politics.

Fox news is rarely wrong and they are heavily scrutinized. If you have examples please post. I think you are mixing up Fox hard news with their commentators. CNN and Fox have taken the lead on this story so when an insider wants to set the record straight they go to Fox and CNN. Every time there seems to be a claim an interested party comes in with new evidence. That's what happens in these cases, when you try to pin blame on someone that someone fights back. You can be sure Sec. Clinton is behind the scene also protecting her image. The truth will all come out but these two news sources deserve a lot of credit. Without them the video would still be relevant.

We know you'd rather listen to Chris Matthews say that Obama puts a thrill up his leg. That's real journalism.

Everyone has the right to view what they want. Including the rise in unemployment, rise in the deficit, murder of four Americans at the hands of terrorists, skyhigh gas prices... Those are facts. This president and his administration have driven us further into the dirt than we were. It would be one thing if he couldn't improve it but didn't make it worse. He has made it dramatically worse and there's no light at the end of the tunnel – unless he moves out of the White House.

You're making this about Republicans v. Democrats. That's part of the problem. If the "D" was replaced with an "R", you would not be supporting Obama as you are now. Supporting Obama right now is only revealing the lack of your mental capacity for good judgement.

Fact CNN got a journalist on the ground and beat the US military to a Journal.... We couldn't even get in there before CNN??? Men died because of our inaction... It was a hotbed of activity.... The redcross pulled out Nato Pulled out.... Why was our guy there.... Was he funneling arms to help overthrow people??? How this is not a national scandal with people outside the white house waiting for answers is amazing to me... Lets just wait and see... Wait for what, how about they tell us who ransacked the embassy??? I have been waiting but it feels very very very bad. I absolutely agree. As a journalism major, and having written for a paper, this type of story should be front page news for investigation. However, it does not fit the persuasion of most reporters and although it will say it is "covering" it, CNN buries it. I thought journalism was suppose to be the gatekeeper to the government. Sad that it has become in many respects the guardian of it where the political persuasion is the same.

Fully agree. The story isn't too confusing. Now that we know how much was known at the time and how much certainly was passed to the president at the time, we know that the president (and CNN) has been lying to us. CNN needs to stop hiding this story. People aren't as stupid as CNN thinks.

The embassy staff and CIA had clear communication lines, and tried for 3 times to report on their situation. Three times help was requested and three times it was denied. Some CIA ops ignored the order to stand down and rushed over to help. The last two men killed were the two ex navy SEALS, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. They manned a machine gun on the roof. They were killed almost 7 hours after the first attack by mortar fire.

There were special forces available in northern italy that could have arrived in time. I'm sure there is no way this can be kept quiet. There are enough people who knew exactly what went on in there.

It's really sad to see how many Americans are truly dumb. They're over here disgusted with CNN because they feel CNN is underreporting this story or because they don't have the facts straight... How obvious can it be... Fox News is a republican channel. It's absolutely 100% biased towards the right wing... They are a propoganda tool... If nobody else is reporting it... Not CNN, Not PBS, not BBC... Not any of the other major news sources... It should be obvious to you... Fox news is full of SH!T... Everybody who's not a republican KNOWS that... They make stuff up... They tried to say the President of the United States wasn't even a citizen, despite PROOF of the opposite... That should show you immediately that Fox news is not reliable, it's not reporting facts to people... yet here you are, railing against CNN for not reporting the bias bull$#it that Fox News reports... Don't get mad at CNN you should be angry at Fox.

You take everything Fox reports as facts, you realize how stupid that is right? They tried to push the idea that the President wasn't a citizen, and came up with "Facts" and "Witnesses" that could "prove it" and guess what, The President is a citizen, they lied to you they made up facts, they got people to lie for them to push the idea... Why on Earth would you put ANY stock in Fox news at this point? They are willing to say anything for the right wing agenda.

So will you believe Charles Woods? Woods lost his son Tyrone. Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty were the two ex navy SEALS who rushed in to help and they were the last two casualties in there. Why don't you do some digging and find out what is going on instead.

If FoxNews is a "Republican network", then CNN and MSNBC are "Democratic networks". Who cares. That's old news (pun not intended). You're missing the entire point. Whether or not Fox is reporting facts, the truth is that Obama and his administration *did* provide the American public with conflicting information, backpeddled, and are likely now strategizing over how to approach damage control. That, alone, is enough to raise red flags that yes, they *are* covering something up.

    Is Fox News always wrong?

Will you try to spin this story?

Or will you acknowledge, that there's a chance that the administration was managing the situation by hope over reason. And that maybe, just maybe, that radical Islam will hate us regardless of how many times we help Muslims in need. And, perhaps, come to the conclusion that more reporting and investigation are necessary.

It seems that CNN has always been days behind the revelations that this was an organized attack and that real-time information was available. That the same social media that was trumped as reliable news sources during the "Arab Spring", and was followed by the chain of command to be considered briefing-worthy was part of the reporting chain?

Then they come on here, and attack CNN's story because it doesn't match with what Fox is reporting. Fox is a bias news source, they admit it, it's not even a question. They employ the majority of Conservative talk show hosts out there. I guess my question is, why are you so willing to take Fox's explanations of events over Military Commanders on the ground? Do you really think our Military is political? Do you really think the Commanders on the ground are more invested in politics than they are in their own comrades? Really? You guys are a joke. So many of you are easily led by propoganda it's really scary... You would think in this day and age, Sensationalist Journalism wouldn't have a place. Next, how do you know any of the supposed "administrative e-mails" are authentic Fox news also tried to push the story that the President wasn't born in this country, how reliable are they? lastly, the family of the fallen Seal came out and told Romney to stop politicizing their son's death, and Romney lied about how he met the man, that was according to the Seal's BEST FRIEND... Honestly don't sit here and report to me what Fox news is reporting and try to act like it's a bunch of facts, they're full of crap over there and you know it. If you are a true fomer Soldier please state MOS/RANK and time served in Iraq. I am asking because you either are not really a soldier or did not serve in a combat unit at least not at the level that would be required to conduct this type of operation. I agree with you that on the battle field in the FOG a Commander may be hesitant (if COMMS are not clear which in this case they were) to send in forces to re-enforce a squad, platoon, company etc without getting some ground truth. But in this case we are talking a U.S. Ambassador and U.S. Territory with ISR overhead and good COMMS with the security team on the ground, you don't think this would have at least warranted a fixed wing flyover maybe a show of force?. So please do us all a favor and either tell us what you did in the Army (credibility) or prepare to bring more discredit to what this WH administration has already done to itself by being a tool.

So you think the death of our people is political? You don't think it should be reported on and you are ready to accept anything the administration puts out. Monday morning quarterbacking is necessary so the same mistakes aren't made again. When SEALs call in the coordinates to mortar positions and the Secretary of Defense says there wasn't enough information, we need answers as concerned Americans. The politics is why the administration didn't send more security before the attack and why the video story. But the military response during the attack has nothing to do with politics, it is all national security. We will have the same military under the next adminastration so we need to know why there was so much failure. The picture I am getting is there was a lack of coordination between the CIA and Defense.

How about 'not sending more people into harm's way overseas, without some kind of plan to rescue themSELVES?' Rocket skates, tunnel, vendor's cart, something like that, but expecting The Military to swoop in like the Global Police Force everytime something happens, I'm sorry, maybe it's time to take the Depleted Uranium Card AWAY. Life is different, outside our borders, not everyone is universally in love with America, Out There. Maybe our next diplomat that goes to Libya, if they ever send one, which, considering the internet, might be an obsolete job, will do a 'solo gig', me, myself, and I, someone that speaks the lingo and can keep shop all by their lonesomenessness, at the direct invitation of that country's government, and if no such invitation and guarantee of safety is forthcoming, then no diplomat-person is forthcoming, either. Gracious hosts, and gracious guests, and keep it all honest and public, and stuff. Maybe DIPLOBOT6000, self-powered, bulletproof, flame-proof, graffiti-resistant, waterproof to 500M, if the angry mob approacheth, the 'bot wanders off into the briny depths, where none dare follow...Poseidon returns to the sea...

Perhaps the Libyan ambassador became a liability and was intentionally eliminated, like the Iraq and Libyan leaders and others around the world before him.

Liar, just like the WHite House is lying. CNN is lying covering for them! Your caption that it is a protester makes us all want to throw up! That there is a terrorist! There was no freaking protest at Benghazi! Go to FOX News for this headline, there was real time communications from those on the ground that were in the midst of the battle that went on for over 6 hours! They had a laser trained on the incoming mortar fire and called for help 3 times. Two drones were used to monitor the battle. Nearby forces were told to stand down twice and decided to break orders to go save lives and they did, and gave up their own lives to do so! CNN you are traitors to the American people and those who lost their lives there. You have no conscience left. I will never trust your reporting again! Just rename yourselves Obama Propaganda! I never thought I would see journalism in this nation drop to this. I am ashamed for you.

Really dude? Fox News? The most bias conservative news source on the planet, you want us to take Fox news' word for how things went down? and again i ask you, to what end? In what way would this benefit the administration, if there was a cover-up, why would it benefit the administration to have a mob of people ochestrate this attack instead of al Quaida? A mob of people would look worse, it would show wide spread anti-american support instead of another terrorist attack... how on Earth do you repubs come up with these conspiracies? why don't you even question things?

The REAL question is "Why aren't the other media outlets questioning things?" This story has been suspect from the beginning. Why would they say angry mob instead of terrorists? Well Clinton, that would be because they are trying to say that they have terrorism under control. They don't. There is more to the story... Why were the CIA guys there? Oh, before they went, one did an interview in which he said that he was going to collect the weapons that we sent over there to over throw Libya's leader. Oops, was that widely known before? How much has that been covered in the media? I will admit that I did not vote for Obama, but when he was elected, I taught my children that I might not agree with his policies, but I was sure he was a good man who would do his best. No longer. He has not done his best and his lack of action when HE KNEW what was going on IN REAL TIME and denied their calls for help. That is just below all in my book. We, as Americans, do not do that. We just don't. There were assets there who could have helped and possibly saved the lives of four Americans and they did NOTHING. they were told to STAND DOWN. Who made that call? Answer that one? No matter who it was, they should be fired and if it was the President, he should be fired by the American people in ten short days. If he knew all of this and did nothing, he has no honor. If he didn't know, then he wasn't doing his job. The emails went to the White House – in real time telling them what was going on. It absolutely disgusts me. Wake up people! Pick up this story CNN – I dare you. Take off the rose colored glasses and do your job!

If your definition of "bias" is telling the TRUTH instead of engaging in Obama-supporting propaganda, then it appears that FOX is guilty. And thank God for FOX - the only reliably informational channel.

ummm, are clearly not paying attention to all the facts around this Benghazi attack, and you lack common sense. Why would a mob try to mount a protest, in the middle of the night on an obscure, unmarked consulate house in a suburb, 600 miles away from the Embassy in Tripoli? Reuters had a story on day two, of the Libyan Prime minister confirming from his own sources inside of Libya, that this was a terrorist attack, and not a mob protest about a youtube film. The whitehouse fabricated a lie to cover up what really happened. The facts of what really happened are still being revealed day by day. Today we learned that drones in the sky were in fact sending back live video feeds on the night of the attacks to the White house and the State Dept, so they DID in fact know what the hell was going on that night. They just decided to lie about it to the American public...the problem was, it didn't stick. Now you should be asking, why did they lie? And for that matter, why did the armed drones not provide aerial support in the moment our CIA support teams were being shelled by terrorists?
