US intel believes some Benghazi attackers tied to al Qaeda in Iraq

By Suzanne Kelly, Pam Benson and Elise Labott

U.S. intelligence believes that assailants connected to al Qaeda in Iraq were among the core group that attacked the diplomatic mission in Benghazi, a U.S. government official told CNN.

That would represent the second al Qaeda affiliate associated with the deadly September 11 attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

Previously, intelligence officials said there were signs of connections to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the North African wing of the terror group.

The revelation that members of al Qaeda in Iraq are suspected of involvement in the Libya attack comes at a time when there is a growing number of fighters from that group also taking part in the Syrian civil war.

Also: Doubts surface over e-mail on claim of responsibility for Benghazi attack

It also surfaces as questions persist about Benghazi security and the Obama administration's response to the attack that have become issues in the presidential campaign. Republicans have said issues around the attack illustrate weaknesses in President Barack Obama's foreign policy.

The weakened al Qaeda affiliate has had a resurgence in Iraq since U.S. forces left the country at the end of last year. The group had used Libya as a source for fighters. In a 2008 cable, Stevens described a nearby town of Derna as "a wellspring of Libyan foreign fighters" for al Qaeda in Iraq.

The latest intelligence suggests the core group of suspects from the first wave of the attack on the Benghazi mission numbered between 35 to 40. Around a dozen of the attackers are believed to be connected to either al Qaeda in Iraq or al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, the government official said.

The attack had two waves: The first targeted the main compound where Stevens and another diplomatic official were believed killed. A second stage a few hours later involved an annex building approximately a mile away.

Security Clearance: The latest on military, diplomacy and intelligence

According to the official, others in the core group are suspected of having ties to the Libyan group Ansar al-Sharia, and many of them are believed to be Egyptian jihadis.

A suspect in the attack is being held in Tunisia where the United States has been denied access to him, according to Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the ranking Republican on the Intelligence Committee.

Chambliss would not name the suspect, but CNN has been told it is Ali Ani al-Harzi, a Tunisian connected to extremist groups in North Africa.

Details about al-Harzi were first reported by the Daily Beast.

In a statement Chambliss said, "Tunisian authorities have a suspected terrorist in custody, yet our guys aren't able to interrogate him."

An aide to Chambliss said the suspect was first arrested in Turkey and later sent to Tunisia.

CNN has learned that the United States first became aware of al-Harzi when he apparently posted details of the attack on social media while it was happening.

At the request of the United States, Turkish officials detained al-Harzi when he entered that country after leaving Libya. Turkey then transferred him to Tunisia.

The United States fully expects to have access to him and is trying to figure out how that will happen, another U.S. official told CNN. The FBI is leading the investigation and the intelligence community, according to the official, is working behind the scenes to help with that as well.

Video from one security camera at the Benghazi mission was recovered from the site, but a U.S. official would not say whether al-Harzi or any other suspects were identified from the video.

E-mails obtained by CNN made clear that less than 30 minutes after the attack began, the State Department notified officials within the agency, the White House, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Pentagon and the FBI that an attack was underway and that Stevens was in the compound.

And just two hours later, one of the e-mails indicated the Libyan extremist group Ansar al Sharia was claiming responsibility for the attack on social media websites. "Embassy Tripoli reports the group claimed responsibility on Facebook and Twitter and has called for an attack on Embassy Tripoli," the e-mail said.

Rep. Mike Rogers, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, told CNN the e-mails show the attack was not a spontaneous demonstration in protest of an anti-Muslim video as the intelligence community and Obama administration officials initially claimed.

"So what you saw in the e-mails in that real time was a real description," Rogers told Soledad O'Brien on "Starting Point." "And, as you noticed, there was no talk of demonstrations or other things. And it was clearly very early identified with a terrorist affiliate of AQIM."

Eight hours after the first e-mail was sent by the State Department to officials around the government, another message, obtained by CNN on Wednesday from a government official, said that the personnel in the "shelter location" in Benghazi were "under attack by mortar fire." It added there are reports of injuries to staff.

The timing of the message suggests the "shelter" referenced was the CIA annex a mile from the main diplomatic mission where, ultimately, two former Navy SEALs were killed in an effort to fight the attackers.

The email will likely be cited by critics to show that the administration knew within hours about the military nature of the attack.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the documents did not tell the whole story, describing conclusions drawn from the one document as "cherry picking."

"Posting something on Facebook is not in and of itself evidence, and I think it just underscores how fluid the reporting was at the time and continued for some time to be," Clinton said.

Moreover, intelligence officials do not believe Ansar al-Sharia is solely responsible with indications now that some of the attackers were associated with al Qaeda in Iraq, al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and an Egyptian jihad network.

A spokesman for Ansar al-Sharia denied the group was responsible the day after the assault.

If you look at this administrations foreign policy it is laced with a dangerous new calculus predicated in the hope of shaping a new liberal global order but it comes across as incoherent and opportunistic for our enemies. The problem was trying something so grand without understanding real world dynamics. In the end, i see it as the arrogance and hubris of thinking we can actually dictate in that way.

Last, from fast and furious to the deaths of 4 Americans in Libya, the net results speak for themselves. We all need to stop the typical demagoguery since it gets us no where other than to continue flaming each other in posts and in person. We are so busy yelling at each other that we fail to see the bigger problem of how divided we have become.

..There were also U.S. Satellite & Drone photos of the U.S. Consulate , benghazi, depicting Libyan Terrorists "stalking" U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens for days before he was murdered. these high quality photos could have been "investigated" by U.S. Intelligence teams to "cross match" the U.S. Satellite & Drone, Iraq, Intelligence photos and cross matched against the Sinjar Photos and U.S. Awakening photos in U.S. Intelligence efforts against the known Libyan Terrorist volunteers from Benghazi as established in 700 ""TARPLY" files at U.S. Military Academy, West Point, USA? SEE: http://tarpley.net/docs/CTCForeignFighter.19.Dec07.pdf
..The U.S. Executive Branch Departments ignored U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens in the same manner it ignored the family of PFC Kristian Menchaca despite the fact we litigated denials of Victim Protection against the U.S. Justice Deprtment in our "Supplemental Briefs" to U.S. Supreme Court Case 08-9595 explaining the TERRORIST life threats against the Menchaca Family so strenously ignored by the U.S. Justice department.
..U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was as much a Victim of 'mentally disabled" U.S. State Department Satraps as he was a Victim of Terrorists.
.. Hillary Clinton is also a Victim.

When people would say CNN stands for Communist News Network, I never liked it. However, in trying to hear what was going on most recently in Benghazi with our seals requesting help and being denied...I am inclined to think CNN has become just a propaganda machine. I heard Obama's speech in NH aired Saturday, but I waited and waited to hear Romney's speech in Florida which was NOT aired. In fact CNN said Romney would be making a speech when in fact he already had finished his speech. CNN-Communist News Network or Propaganda Media....either works!

this is why I don't watch CNN because you do not cover the story like you should, I turned the channel to CNN tonight & you have not said anything about the Benghazi attack at all. nobody wants Obama to get in trouble for that. everybody believes that he did not know anything about what was going on at the time is crazy.

      Because there was no cover-up!

What do you think this investigative committee that was put together by Obama is doing? To bring to light in the PUBLIC what all the FACTS are.

How can there be a cover-up when Mormon Bishop Mittens and his people have been getting the same intelligence briefings as Obama since late August?

That is why Mormon Bishop Mittens has stopped talking about Libya right after the 2nd debate when Obama exposed him for lying. Mormon Bishop Mittens have been getting the same CIA briefings as Obama, and no FACTS were ever established of an AL QAEDA connection untion about 2 weeks later.

There is no cover-up. Hence, there is no story!

@etch – oh, there is a cover up. I will speculate but it probably involves arms, other national players (e.g. Turkey), and who we were arming gone bad. The ambassador does not simply travel on a mission because he feels like it. This was an official action that went horribly wrong

I will use a dirty word in politics.... TRUTH. I would like to imagine a point where the players (in closed session) come clean. Afterwards the guilty are dealt with and the secret information protected. Someone will be going to jail.

I am so glad my brother is out of the military now becasue I would hate to know this president would be in charge of protecting his life. He allowed these 4 Americans to be murdered. Silly RIGHT-WING nut!

Obama didn't blame the Benghazi attack on the YouTube Christian Taliban video. He said the MILLIONS of ANGRY MUSLIMS rioting and attacking US and Western facilities on the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

You RIGHT-WING nuts seem to forget that the US embassy in Egypt was attacked by these MUSLIMS angry over the YouTube Christian Taliban.

Do as your MORMON BISHOP has done ... and move on. Mormon Bishop Mittens only cared about Benghazi when he thought he could use it for POLITICAL GAIN. But now that there is nothing to gain, he no longer talks about Libya.

The real question is could this have been prevented? Yes, it could easily and should have been prevented. With added security forces as requested, although they would not be able to hold off such an attack, they would act as a deterrent from the attack ever happening. The administration had the intel on instability in the region, and certainly should have taken necessary precautions before September 11th.

Security requests were made for the embassy in Tripoli. That was where the major security concerns were.

Each new security personnel costs about $330K per year. The actually received 1 more extra security agent then they had initially requested last spring.

But having more security agents, would not have helped anyways. In fact, it would made it more difficult to move because the bigger you are the bigger the target you become.

Nothing short of a real military unit could have stopped or prevented the Benghazi attack. That would have cost MILLIONS more. And it is not a political good thing to have US military units in Libya or any FOREIGN COUNTRY for that matter ... without special arrangements and agreements put in place.

Or perhaps nobody had any solid intelligence about what was happening ... where anybody was and who was doing the attacking?

Perhaps, the closest US military base or navy ship was too far away to be of any help?

Perhaps, one has to weight the pros and cons of sending military units into a foreign country without their permission ... because that could be taken as an act of war?

Perhaps, without knowing who the attackers were, you don't to risk more Americans getting killed?

Yeah, you are not privy to classified information and what was going on in the command center.

It's not as simple as calling 911 and having the police reach your place in less than 2 minutes.

The Obama administration made this political by attempting to blame the deaths in Benghazi on a video that no one had ever heard of after Obama paraded around for over a year crowing over the death of Bin Laden. Really? Which is more likely to motivate extremists on 911? Looks like Obama was desperate to avoid admitting that terrorists attacked us just like he has failed to admit Major Nidal Hassan was an Islamist extremist who yelled Allah Akbar while killing his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood. Instead, failing to acknowledge Hassan's contacts with an American extremist in Yemen (who cpwas later killed in a drone attack), the Obama administration falsely claimed the Fort Hood attack was "workplace violence"! They have contorted the truth in obvious ways in order to claim AlQueada is on the run. They are no longer credible and the recent leak of emails proves they cherry picked info they wanted to release while excluding info that did not fit their meme of AQ on the run. There is no explanation only lame excuses and that cover up language of "we have to wait until after the election for the investigation to make its findings". BS

And the CIA givving Romney the same info that the this was a protest over a film...don't you peoeple realize that this ruse is part of the cover up as Obama had the truth the same day? Did Obama give Romney these e-mails of let his view the drone video? NO he didn't. What the liberals are avoiding is the reasons for Obama's coverup, namely, he put these extremists in power then left our embassy personnel's safety to an extremist militia who bailed when the attack started...because their friends were the attackers. DO SOME REASEARCH...the Ansar al-Sharia is a splinter group to the February 17th Brigade.

Keep in mind that Romney is getting security briefing as well. He knows, hence, why I suspect he backed off – go back and watch/listen to the last debate and what he said about weapons. He boxed the President in. There has been much speculation that a combo of Iranian/Russian backed terrorists kicked our reara while we were trying to arms the other side. Again, another speculation, but the delay was probably to avoid escalating into a regional war with other nations. Yes, other nations; not just terrorists. Again, speculation on my part. That is why having the truth is important

This whole question about emails and knowing is ridiculous. I worked in intelligence for 7 years. there are perfectly valid reasons not to tip your hand and tell what you know, mainly it has to do with controlling letting the enemy know what YOU know to obtain a larger objective. Everyone should know the story of Enigma in world war II. The British broke the German Enigma code, they knew they were going to bomb Coventry back to the stone age. They could have evacuated the city but if they did that to save a several thousand lives then the Germans would know the British had cracked Enigma. By letting the Germans bomb Coventry, Britain ultimately achieved total victory.

And what would be the perfectly valid reasons to falsify a reason claiming it was a video? In this case, this appears to be all politics. Could it be that its not good campaign politics to let the country know that on the anniversary of 9-11 we are not much safer. And that AQ has the organizational level and ability to attack our embassy. Remember, this email just came out a couple days ago. But it was sent 2 hours after the attack. And the claim came shortly thereafter.

There are spin doctors who want their man get to be reelected at all costs. It wasn't to hard to go with the flow since the Main Stream Media were already blaming the attack on a video , as a copy cat to the Embassy in Cairo .

Because there was no such *CLEAR EVIDENCE* of who was responsible for the attack until 2 weeks later.

Did you not read the CIA intelligence briefings released on Monday ... before the Presidential debate#3 on foreign policy?

Susan Rice was simply echoing what the CIA had given both the Obama administration and Mormon Bishop Mittens!

Mittens got the same CIA intelligence briefings as Obama did! And for 2 weeks, the CIA did not know who was responsible for the attacks and assumed it was just people angry over the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

So if Mitten's got the same CIA intelligence briefings as Obama did, why did he jump to conclusions and push a "cover-up" story? HINT: POLITICAL GAIN

Now that Mitten's and the GOP got exposed, they no longer want to talk about Libya because there is no POLITICAL GAIN for them.

Mormon BIshop Mitten's got PWNED in debate #2 for LYING about Obama not calling it an "act of terror". And in debate#3, Mittens didn't even want to talk about Libya! Because he knows he has NOTHING.

        Etch a Sketch,

Any good points you may have are totally and undeniably diminished because of your juvenile name calling. What are you in fifth grade? I guess you feel a little outnumbered here, this is a highly emotional issue. You did give me some points to think about. I for one feel like Romney has stopped talking about it because if he does, then HE becomes the story. I think it is a brilliant strategy for him to let it play out in the news, and not add any fuel to the fire. Like I said, I think you raise some interesting points, but can't take you too seriously because of your intolerance.

Still no one is asking why General Ham's rscuee team was told to stand down, not once but twice, and then relieved of his command when he later ignored the stand down order. Something stinks to high heaven. Even the two seals who came to their aide were originally told to stand down. So basically there were only two people at the CIA safe house, ambassidor Stevens and his aide.

RIGHT-WING nuts claim that base from this article: Obama knew in near real-time that the attack was a terrorist attack

No, the emails do not reveal any FACTS ... only ASSUMPTIONS.

The CIA assessed and communicated to both Obama and Mormon Bishop Mittens that the attack appeared to be a result of protesters angry over the YouTube Christian Taliban video. It took the CIA and FBI two weeks before they could definitively claim that it was indeed a coordinated attack by a known terrorist group.

In the heat of the moment of the attack, emails are being sent by folks on the ground that there is an attack. That is not a RATIONAL assessment. Because nobody knew at the moment it was happening, WHO THE ATTACKERS WERE!!!

What if it is later revealed that the attackers were Iranian secret agents? Or Russians?

Then what? You would be accusing Obama for lying that it was a terrorist attack instead of a declaration of war by country.

That is why the RIGHT-WING nuts are clueless as to why both Mormon Bishop Mittens and the Republicans have gone quiet about this issue. Because they know there is NOTHING! And that they would be the ones American's blame for POLITICIZING a national security issue.

Apparently, you have more *FACTS* than the CIA do.

Mittens could have exposed Obama in debate#2 and debate#3 ... but he didn't

Instead, in debate#2, Mittens got PWNED by Obama.

In debate#3, Mitten's was afraid to talk about Libya because earlier in the day it was revealed that CIA gave both him and Obama the same initial assessment that the attack was from people angry about the YouTube Christian Taliban video.

A real cover-up would be to exaggerate WMD claims to the UN so that you could send thousands of American soldiers to their death avenging Saddam Hussein for his attempts to assassinate your father.

This basis for the RIGHT-WING nuts hysteria about a so called "cover story" is based on the following Susan Rice quote

    September 16 – Susan Rice

"It began spontaneously in Benghazi. It was a spontaneous reaction to what had transpired in Cairo as a consequence of the video"

And it was revealed on this past Monday, that the Susan Rice's quote was exactly what the CIA assessed and told the administration.

Who else did the CIA tell?

Mormon Bishop Mitten's and Paul Ryan got the same CIA assessment as did Susan Rice, Clinton, and Obama. But instead of going with the CIA assessment, they politicized the issue and created a fake "cover-up" story.

That is why Mitten's did not want to talk about Libya on Monday. Because Obama would have exposed him because Mitten's got the same intelligence briefing as Obama ... and those intelligence briefing from the CIA in the initial 2 weeks said nothing about Al Qaeda.

Just think about that ... let it sink in ...

Why would Obama lie about this knowing that Mormon Bishop Mitten's got the same intelligence briefings? All Mittens has to do is say, "Here are the CIA intelligence briefings that you and I both got that shows that you lied!" ...

Of course, Mitten's never did that, did he?

Instead, it was revealed this past Monday, that it was Mormon Bishop Mittens who lied for POLITICAL GAIN.

The guns they were using were found caked with blood atop that building. How about our Ambassador who fled to the safe room which now we found out was a closet. The US had planes in the area and our incompetent leader just let two heros suffer and fight alone atop a building for SEVEN HOURS fighting terrorists. Then our incompetent leader flew off to Vegas. BEFORE:

234 incidents against western assets in Libya in 1 year .

Security makes repeated requested to beef up Security !

The Ambassador requests additional security due to growing extremism.

The Brits and Red cross pull out because they access that they can't secure their personnel, after attempts were made on them.

A drone attack kills a high ranking Al Queda member days before.

A 14 foot hole was already made at the American compound in attacks on it April and June .

    9/11

Lawlessness rules the ground in Libya with a weak unestablished Gov't in control.

    During:

State dept official ,Charlene Lamb views and corresponds with security on the ground in Realtime during the attack.

Emails are sent to the FBI , WH and the State dept. from officials monitoring the attack, with no mention of protesters.

Al Queda affilailiates take credit for the attack.

    After:

Videos showing armed men with RPG's in and around the compound.

Mortars were assessed as being used on the compound.

on 9/14 CNN reporters find a diary where the Ambassador fears that he is on an Al Queda hit list.

AND WITH THE PREPONDERANCE OF EVIDENCE ON 9/16 SUSAN RICE IS SENT BY THE W.H. TO 5 TALK SHOWS & SAYS :

"Based on the best information we have to date, what our assessment is as of the present is in fact what began spontaneously in Benghazi as a reaction to what had transpired some hours earlier in Cairo where, of course, as you know, there was a violent protest outside of our embassy "

Cover for the president? Cover up what for the president? The president doesn't handle security for compounds. That's the duty of the state department. How does Watergate even compare to this? You sound like Romney's party. Turning a tragic situation into politics. As a country who just helped another country win it's freedom, many would assume the people of Libya would be on our side. As a fact, after the attack many Libyans protested the attacks, giving apologies to America and praise for assisting in a Liberated Libya. So in conclusion stop pointing fingers and trying to find the smallest reason to throw the President under the bus. A country is only as strong as those who live within it.

All sarcasm aside. It is a shame that Obama has made this a political issue. It doesn't (and shouldn't) take much to rally American's to unite and set aside their differences when we are attacked by an outside foe. We would have his back in an instant. But desperate to perpetuate the myth that Al-Queda was licked, our President elected to blame an American Citizen who had exercised his right to free speech. A commander-in-cheif cant stand against the cornerstone of what America fights for and has fought for for over 200 years, then try to walk it back in a few days and claim his actions sacrosanct from political discussion. You wanna be proud of that act, go ahead – but don't complain when its your speech that loses favor.

It is interesting to note that different commenters appear to have perspectives that provide a view of core agendas. Some people genuinely would like to really understand what happened in Benghazi. Others clearly are using this issue as a basis to vent and to use for their varying political agendas. I often note that the Republicans have no sense of proportion but more importantly that for all of their lip service regarding patriotism, these commentaries illustrate that they possess none whatsover. This issue should bring people together but it does not. It is just so much kerosene to be used for the disenfranchised to pour into the fire of a never ending political rage. These people always have an agenda and it is never for the benefit of the country, it is for selfish and petty political purposes. Do we mourn the dead? No we do not, we use the issue and matter before us as an axe to grind or as a wedge issue to score political points. As such these issues and responses illustrate our pettiness, prejudices and our primal fears. More than anything they highlight the current state of our union which is to say non-existent. As stated, in the most singular of terms, it illustrates that we have made America and the American political discourse and process, our own worst enemy. As a result we want someone to pay, to be punished; not for Benghazi but for being a dysfunctional society that is not making it possible for average Americans to have a life worth living nor providing passage to get to the other side of the bridge; the promised land. Based on the a reading of the people commenting it is doubtful that many here would have even a remote clue to what I have stated here, they are too self-involved and out to lunch to get it, for the rest press on, this too shall pass.

A mother's instinct is to fight for her children and I am deeply saddened and angered that some mother's sons were so neglected by our own Government. This whole situation was preventable from weeks before it started to the last hours. It was avoidable and those mothers deserved better. I am not in favor of playing politics with this, but we are about to hire a Commander in Chief for the next 4 years. There will be other mothers that will have to live with the decision we make in 2 weeks and that is why this needs to be discussed.
