Intelligence on Benghazi shifted after Obama administration described attack as 'spontaneous'

An Obama administration official whose now controversial comment that the attack on the U.S. mission in Libya was "spontaneous" relied on talking points provided by the CIA based on its assessment that an intelligence official said on Friday was updated days later with new information.

The disclosure to CNN appears to offer some clarity around the Obama administration's early stage explanation of the September 11 attack by armed militants that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans.

But CNN National Security Contributor Fran Townsend injected a new element into the crucial time line on Friday night, reporting on Anderson Cooper 360 that senior intelligence officials had multiple conversations with senior White House officials in the first 24 hours after the attack.

Townsend, a former homeland security and counterterrorism adviser to President George W. Bush, added that "we don't know" what was said.

"But I can tell you from having lived through these crises, you're getting a constant feed of what the intelligence community understands about what is currently going on and what has happened on the ground," Townsend said.

She added that "they will caveat the information" because in the first hours there "will be all sorts of information, some of it which will turn out not to have been true."

Additionally, a senior Republican lawmaker said members of Congress had information from intelligence officials within a day of the incident that it was a military style attack.

President Barack Obama faces harsh criticism from Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for his administration's handling of security in Benghazi ahead of the attack and its slow-to-evolve explanation of what occurred.

Also: Confusion and contradiction about Benghazi suspects

The issue is expected to be highlighted on Monday when the candidates square off in their third and final debate, which will focus on national security. Romney is trying to undercut Obama's perceived strength with the electorate on foreign affairs in a tightly contested campaign.

Romney has claimed the Obama administration's statements about the attack in the days that followed were confusing at best, and illustrate his contention that the president's foreign policy is incoherent and has made America less respected and more more vulnerable.

Republicans have seized on televised remarks made five days after the attack by U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice. In one appearance, she said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that an assessment based on the best information available indicated a spontaneous reaction to demonstrations over an anti-Muslim film produced in the United States.

Several senior administration officials told CNN that Rice's use of the word "spontaneous" came directly from an assessment provided to Congress by the CIA and was not edited by the White House.

"The currently available information suggests that the demonstrations in Benghazi were spontaneously inspired by the protests at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo and evolved into a direct assault against the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi and subsequently its annex. There are indications that extremists participated in the violent demonstrations," the document stated.

But the intelligence official said it took days to sort out information around the attack.

"It wasn't until after the points were used in public that people reconciled contradictory information and assessed there probably wasn't a protest around the time of the attack," the official told CNN.

With regard to initial thinking the incident started as a protest – an administration official maintained that intelligence coming from human sources and intercepts all indicated there was a protest on the scene. At the time, there were many demonstrations across the Middle East over the film.

The early talking points outlining the incident as spontaneous were written so members of Congress and senior officials could say something publicly about the attack, the intelligence official said.

"A key question early on was whether extremists took over a crowd or if the guys who showed up were all militants. It took time—until that next week—to sort through varied and sometimes conflicting accounts to understand the group’s overall composition,” the intelligence official said.

But House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican, told CNN that the panel had information from the intelligence community within 24 hours of the incident that it was a military style attack.

"If you look at all of the information leading up to (the attack) from an intelligence perspective, it's really confounding how you can come to a conclusion and then promote it for days in the face of all of that information that this was about a video," Rogers said.

The new disclosure, however, raises the question of whether intelligence officials are now being blamed for confusion about Benghazi events.

"The intelligence community is not being blamed. Administration officials have made it very clear, the (intelligence community) is providing the best possible assessment it can, another U.S. intelligence official said. "There is no sense anyone is throwing the (intelligence community) under the bus."

Separately, a Senate committee has requested documents and a classified briefing from intelligence officials about the Benghazi time line and whether statements by administration officials were inaccurate.

The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee also wants to know about threat assessments and security concerns before the attack. A hearing is planned when lawmakers return to Washington after the election.

Romney suggested at Tuesday's debate in New York that the Obama administration played politics by failing to immediately acknowledge what occurred in Benghazi was a terror attack. Obama bristled, calling that claim "offensive."

When Obama said he described the attack as an act of terror the day after it occurred, Romney challenged him. Obama responded by saying, "check the transcript" of White House remarks on the incident.

This entire issue was created by Frances Townsend (a GOP operative) and CNN... GOP menbers used CNN reporting to attack the President... It's been a political witch hunt from day one to get Romney elected, on the backs of the dead.

So if US intelligence found no evidence that it was an al quada attack, and yet Romney denounced it as an attack almost 24 hours BEFORE the attack even occurred, does this mean Romney was the one who instigated the attack? Duh duh duhhhhhh..... Oh man I need a shower, I sound like freakin limbaugh.....

I think it is very sad that the Republicans are creating this issue for political reasons and CNN is enlarging it for ratings. What has happened to pride in America? Is political gain more important than showing a United front against our enemies? I believe our country should come first. I am ashamed of the Republicans and CNN (w

"...more lime.." Perhaps you have had too many limes in whatever you are drinking. Politics? Are you kidding? One would have to go back to the Nixon WH to find the same level of lies and deceit that has occurred under this administration with the Libyan tragedy. Go read the story about the numerous requests that were made by Stevens for additional security, which in turn were denied by our State Department.

What exactly did Mitt say that was so wrong? Was it related to the fact that our response to the act of terror (presidents words not mine, lol) should not be to apologize for the video because of our 1st amendment right of speech as the president, state department and press secretary were doing! Why did the state dept take down their message of the video not representing the us? Mitt sounded more presidential that day than did our current apologizer in chief.
Blame the intelligence communtiy all they want ghe reason they cant get their story straight is simply because everything they try to explain it away with comes back as a lie because of something else they said previously contradicts an earlier statement.

Checked the L.A. Times story out. Don't believe it is entirely forthcoming and true. However, let's suppose it is true. So, it is that easy to attack our embassy and kill our ambassador and other Americans? So it doesn't even take a long, well – planned attack. Now everyone knows, you can simply and spontaneously decide to attack U.S. Embassy's and it's that easy to kill U.S. diplomats. Planned attack or unplanned attack...either way it shows Obama and his administration are very incompetent. Ask yourself this. Would you want to be at the mercy of Obama's decisions when your life or a loved one's life is in danger? I say no way. Obama needs to go.

The Congress just made a bit deal out of thin air. They know full well the administration has the same source of info as the Congress has. If there were multiple sources of intel sources, that what they were. DON'T TRY TO SPLIT HAIR, Mike Rogers.

The President has acknowledged in the Rose garden the very second day that "NO ACTS OF TERROR WILL GO UNANSWERED" that is crystal clear. Even Bin Laden understood that.

Think of the chaos the nation has on the morning of 911 in NEW York, before everyone's eyes. After the first plane hit the first tower, it was talked about A SMALL PLANE accidentially hit the tower.

It took time to get the facts sort out.

When it comes to foreign issues, I trust President Obama 500% protecting American interests. His past 4 years record spoke for itself, second to NONE.

Mike, you can spin what and how you want to. To this day, you have not catch one Al Qida, not one rat. My advice to you is SHUT UP, instead do some real work for the country who feed, house and pay you.

We should buff up our securities of ALL our embassies, and buff up the Libyan government to be able to sustain themselves. Yet, we should keep the power of those governments in check that need help from us, so we won't create a new dictator.

Spare us the partisan pity. We all know how fluid and subjective CIA information can be and has been in the past. If they, the CIA, thinks something other than what was correct was siad on purpose by the admnistration, they should speak up. Otherwise back up what their civilian leaders have explained. And yes, we know too that the CIA can have groups within it that are based on political affilitions – so they should do what right and truthful to the country they serve.

This is why I'm angry & why I've said from day obe Obama lied. What I know just from reading the news from multiple sources.
There are actual conflicting reports about whether there was a small, non violent protest going on spurred by the Cairo incident.
There were TWO sustained attacks, very coordinated. They used weapons advanced beyond normal, everyday tribepeople skills & availability & in a tactical manner that spoke of at least modrate training (advance, retreat, respond and advance)
There seems to be some dispute as to why Stevens body was removed from the site when clearly from some very disturbing photos when he is being carried away, he's already gone (Rest his soul) and at what point certain atrocities happened to him (forgive me)
There are photos that show people in t-shirts, shorts & flip-flops wandering around the building as it's on fire. Pretty calm if rioting were happening.
We would know NOTHING of what we know if CNN hadn't blown the lid off this with the release of the diary, so everyone stop talking about their bias. Yeah, sure, they are, but in this case? God bless 'em!
The guy that is supposed to be our number one suspect is sitting in hotel lobbies in Libya giving interveiws to reporters while the powers that be say he can't be found.
Obama muttered something about terrorism, swore up & down for a while he never meant that, then during a debate swore he did. In any case, if you read the news of the past, he either lied or he lied.
We know from the diary that problems were dated back as early as Feb & someone in the administration knew.
I don't really need to go on do I?

Obama speaking about the tragedy in Colorado.... “We may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings like this. Such violence, such evil is senseless. It’s beyond reason,” he said.
Words well spoken and our President.
Ask yourself do the words 'acts of terror' or 'to terrorize' carry the same connotation as 'terrorist attack'?

The other thing that nobody is talking about... the day after the attack... we (The US Government) picks up the idiot that made the film for "questioning"... on some trumped up charge. Isn't anyone disturbed by the image of the brown shirts escorting this guy to jail? Yes... he's an idiot, but there is no law against being an idiot... and his freedom of speech is supposed to be protected. This is an OUTRAGE! This is so against what we... as Americans.. are all about. Also... the President doesn't seem to be leading on this topic... he is playing it as apolitical exercise. What has happened to my Country? Free speech does not apply to incitement to violence or terroristic threats. Someone clearly funded and made this film intending to cause harm. Someone else saw that it was brought to the attention of the Arab world right around 9/11. We certainly do not have all the facts – so far, we have heard from NO ONE who admits denying additional security, we don't even know who was contacted, or why the security was not provided. We need to SHUT UP and wait for the facts to develop.

During Obama's watch this is the only successful terrorist attack. Four Americans died, which is very sad. But this is a war and people die in wars. Far more of our own died in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands more civlians died in Iraq, not just a few here and there from a targeted drone attack. The New York towers and our own Pentagon should have been the safest places on the planet, and the previous administration had plenty of intelligence to warn them. This is a dinky little puddle, not even an embassy, in the middle of a civil war in a region where we have ots and lots of enemies. Maybe calling it a terrorist attack right away would have encourged copy cat murders of other Americans in other places. We don't know who did what, we don't know who was at fault, and we need to find out the full facts before eveeryone gets their nickers in a twist.

It is bizarre that the aftermath of Libya attack (i.e., Obama waiting for all the facts and speaking judiciously before he had more information) is being trumped up by radical rightwingers as some kind of indictment of Obama's foreign policy.. it reeks of longterm hypocrisy, else why did we hear no uproar at Bush2 from radical rightwingers in 2004 campaign over the 2977 deaths of 9/11?... why was there no rightwinger uproar at Reagan in 1984 over the 241 American servicemen killed in the bombing of our barracks in Lebanon in 1983?
What was Romney's first impulse this time? Verbally attack "the administration" (actually our embassy in Cairo, and by extension the President) over what Romney claims is an "apology" they sent out:

Now, lets see, who turned down the request for the aircraft and additional security personnel. What GOP garbage. Read the most recent reporting. Libyans on the scene report the event was cayued by the trashing if their prophet abd by similar angry rioting in Egypt. Obama accurately stated egat the early intel provided, which turns out now to have been pretty accurate. Most of the assailants were lightly armed or unarmed civilians, joined by RPG-wielding anti-US militias.

If you Obama haters would back iff from calling every mistake, and even every truth you don't like, a lie, maybe some of what write could be read seriously.

Associated Press reported Friday that the CIA Station Chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours after the attack informing the State Department that there was no protest in Benghazi the night of the attack and that evidence showed it appeared to be premeditated. Despite this, the President went on Letterman and had also had Susan Rice and Jay Carney blame the attack on the stupid anti-Muslim video for roughly two weeks after this report reached the state department. The administration cannot keep distorting the truth. This inconsistency resulted from either purposeful deception or willful blindness.

In addition since you seem to like posting unfounded rhetoric, let me refresh you on what PRESIDENT Obama said the Following day in the Rose Garden: "No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. chooch0253, Ambassador Rice is the US ambassador to the United Nations. She is an employee of the US State Department and therefore is under the direction of the administration. If you believe that she went on several Sunday political talk shows and the administration (President) did not know what she was going to say, that would border on incompetence on the part of Pres. Obama.

Yes, it's definitely a sign of strength when you run off to a Las Vegas fundraiser the same day your embassy is attacked and your ambassador murdered. When Obama said the words "act of terror" in the Rose garden speech, he was referring to the original 9-11. Nice revisionist history, CNN!

Perfectly said Mitzi-we have read the transcript, we have watched the words coming out of his mouth, and we KNOW indisputably he was addressing it by talking generally about acts of terror on 9-11.....and it's even more interesting that on the day he was fundraising for himself. 9-11 to most is an almost sacred day of scarred memories and moments frozen in time that will haunt us forever. It's perfect Obama felt it appropriate to serve himself at a lovely Vegas soiree during the same time period, and even another terrorist attack didn't thwart him. Also interesting to note I have tried to post twice and my posts keep mysteriously not getting put on this board.....

      1. it's hard to point to any successes in the middle east under obama. iran closer than ever to a bomb. missed opportunities to knock out regime. islamist regime replaces friendly one in egypt (prez says not sure if egypt's our enemy). prez ousts kaddafi from the sky then takes no responsibility for the ground – islamists take over benghzai. al qaeda flags fly over gov't bldgs. intelligence says amb. stevens is on an al qaeda hitlist. stevens pleads for security. the british and red cross leave. administration doesn't want to offend anyone with soldiers on the ground. stevens didn't have to die. in afghanistan, we're talking about negotiating with the taliban while the Taliban shoot little girls who want to go to school. policy not based on objectives but predetermined, arbitrary timeline.
      2. domestic issues are related to foreign policy. wars cost money. but appearing weak invites war. the president doesn't want to talk about any of that. he'll talk about big bird, binders, bain, and bush instead. no solutions. no hope and change. no reason to vote for the guy.

You have to kidding. 1940 is the year the U.S. first got involved in the Persian Gulf/Middle East. Since then we have spent trillions fighting wars, propping up puppet governments, arming resistance fighters (do you remember that guy, what's his name? Oh yea Osama Bin Laden.. guess who "created him"? We did.) We armed and trained "resistance fighters" to oppose the Russians when they occupied Afghanistan. We armed Iraq to the teeth in the late 70's to make sure our ally "Saddam Hussein" could defeat Iran in the Iran/Iraq war, then went back to fight Saddam Hussein's military, that we armed and trained, not once but twice now. Does it sound like anyone has accomplished anything in that region after over 70 years? The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. We need to get the hell out of the Persian Gulf/Middle East and stay out. Mind our own freaking business, develop alternative power and fuel resources. We should have done it 70 years ago instead of this total disaster of a foreign policy to keep the flow of oil, flowing. The only reason we have ever been in that region of the world is oil. Anyone saying differently to include any President is full of crap and never studies history.

Any violent act used against a US outpost Embassy or Consulate IS an act or terror in itself. You don't need people with " I'm a terrorist name tag " to make that conclusion..So Obama was right on the money with his statement ...did they know exact specifics that it was preplanned attack with rockets and mortars that takes time to filter in. Take the Bias blinders off and look at the facts and remember who released a press release to make a political point without knowing any facts on the ground hrs earlier only to release them at the same time the news of the Ambassador was released ..Oh yes that would be Mr Romney...Heaven forbid facts get in the way of the truth. Alex, spin is not going to work in this case. If the ambassador's death were caused by spontaneous demonstration because of outrage over the video, then the president would not consider it a terrorist attack. So either he called it a terrorist attack, which I doubt, or he did not, which means he lied during the debate.

        October 20, 2012 at 11:57 am |
      • Chooch0253

@Halfbrain Obama most certainly did declare the attack a terrorist act the day after the incident. Your apparent refusal to acknowledge the facts comes as no surprise.

part of Obama's statement made during his press conference in the Rose Garden, Sep 12, 2012.

"No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

Look at the third word in his address to the press. What is it? Look at the second sentence. Note it refers to 4 Americans.

You might want to do like someone with normal intellect would do. Research before repeating unfounded and uninformed rhetoric.

        October 20, 2012 at 12:16 pm |
      • Dubhly

yes actually it would be still an attack of terror. Do you think a crowd riled up and moving with deadly intent would not be an act of terror even if spur of the moment? Romney is playing a stupid card, but that does not mean it will not work with the same type of people who cannot look beyond political rhetoric.

        October 20, 2012 at 12:18 pm |
      • 2HalfBrain

@Chooch0253, you don't seem to get my point. If the intelligence suggested it was a mob, which is what they are arguing now, why would Obama called it a terrorist attack then? You can't have it both ways. Mob attack or terrorist attack? If you are not sure at the time, that's fine also. But don't claim you declared it was a terrorist attack then.

It shouldn't be hard to understand my logic here.

Of course everyone in the Obama Administration "had to have known" this was different than the rest of the "protests" that had erupted. Exactly what makes you think anyone knew that this was not simply a protest, until the next day? Quite obviously they had determined by the following day it was most likely a terrorist attack, not necessarily related to the "movie" or else Obama would not have held a press conference in the Rose Garden and made the following statement: No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. I know Republicans would like Romney to be President. Democrats want Obama. Or is the goal to make sure nobody is informed and blindly following like sheep?

@Chooch0253, you still don't get my point. The White House is arguing that they didn't have intelligence that pointed to terrorist attack then. So if that is true, how can Obama knew it was an terrorist attack the very next day and declared it? If you argument is true, then White House's current argument is wrong. Why can't people just admit that Obama sometimes fires before he aims? I expect that from a man who called the police "stupid" when his friend was questioned at his own home, and a man who admitted he did not know the details of the Trayvon Martin shooting before he started commenting on that. The man has an insatiable need to comment on everything, as as quickly as possible.

I love how people seem to think this is so cut and dried. This place is like a unstable war zone. In the end the US must keep people there and it is a very un safe place. What about all the people the GOP killed in Iraq, George Bush and the rest should be in jail. How can the GOP ever be trusted again?

Actual Chuck, a similar incident DID happen while Bush was President. It was 9/11/01, it took YEARS to complete the investigation, and although the president was WARNED about this attack one month prior, he dismissed the warning and ignored it. Knowing this, the political BS that the GOP is now pushing was put aside by Democrats to rally behind our nation and our president. Romney was the FIRST to attempt to turn this tragedy into political fodder and THAT conduct PROVED him to be unqualified to lead this or any other nation.

Blame the intelligence community all they want the reason they cant get their story straight is simply because everything they try to explain it away with comes back as a lie because of something else they said previously contradicts an earlier statement.

Lets look at the facts that were known at the time Facts by definition are indisputeable truths. 1, There were additonal sercurity requests from the embassy .. 2. The American Cross left Benghazi. 3. The British pulled out 4.. The Al Qaeda flags were flying in Benghazi.... 5.. The head of sercurity team that was ordered to leave said " we were the last flag standing". 6 The consulate had been attacked in June.... 7. It was 9/11 ..If on any day there should have been more security ON SITE it would have to had been on 9/11 Im concerned that a simple man like myself can figure that out I;m concerned about our intelligence communtiy I think Mr Webster may have to change his definition of Intelligence

We knew it wasn't an anti-video demonstration within 24, but rather than say we weren't sure, it seemed better for our presidential campaign to them keep pushing the video story so we can chill the concept of free speech and vilify an American citizen on international tv. We don't lie, we just tell you things that we know aren't true, and CNN covers for us. – The Obama Administration's Official Stance

Really? Are you a pull string puppet? Have you ever heard the word research? How about verification? You post this b.s comment based on your ignorant opinion and disdain for Obama. You might want to try using facts instead of uninformed rhetoric if you want to support your case. Thus far you have posted nothing but ignorant rhetoric, not facts. I know the mantra of the Republican Party is "We will not be defined by facts" but you are preposterous.

Part of Obama's press conference held in the Rose Garden on Sep12, 2012, the day after the incident.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.

I would just like to know the following:
    1. Why was the administration so reluctant to call this a terrorist attack?
    2. Who initially thought this attack was the result of a video that had been on the net for the prior 6 months?
    3. After supposedly 24hrs into the initial investigation when it was becoming apparent to some that this was more than a protest/riot did the administration continue to blame the video?
    4. Where is the apology to the person who made the video that we now know was not the cause of this tragedy?
    5. When will the mainstream media actually do their freaking jobs and ask the tough questions and find out the truth instead of being complicit in the appearance of a co
    er up?
What's truly sad is that Republicans have been blamed for politicizing this issue but if they wouldn't have kept pushing for answers we would all still be blaming the video because the media would have just kept repeating what the administration was putting out there.

At last, there is one thing Romney could use as an argument, even if not exactly true, about foreign policy. I doubt that the American people will want to hear 90 minutes of trying to say Obama really caused the deaths and then trying to say the one attack means Obama's entire list of successes against terrorists means nothing. I don't think anyone except righ-wing extremists will believe that. Nothing short of shooting someone suits them. Well, don't worry, Obama has a good record of finding and killing murderers. Watch for symptoms of Romnesia Monday night.

The people jumping on the pundit bandwagon in the Benghazi case are almost all individuals who draw their information from warching Fox news or listening to biased commentators like Limbaugh. Several of my friends and acquaintences fit this description. They're always up to speed on the same current "scandal" hoping for the silver bullet that'll swing the upcoming election their way. They have a very difficult time listening to alternative views, let alone accepting them as valid. Many comments here serve as evidence the emotionally and ideoligically charged presentation of rumors mixed with cherry picked facts by Fox and Limbaugh is being taken way too seriously. News casters and talkshow hosts are well paid entertainers hired because they sell advertising on their programs, not for being ideological political missionaries. Making the audience believe they are is their job, not their mission.

The administration has absolutely nothing to gain by misinforming the public regarding the Benghazi attack. To the contrary, as it is evident here, inaccurate statements in such matters lead to confusion and relentless attacks by critics. Therefore it's safe to assume there's no conspiracy here. Now for the critics, where's the beef? Pure allegations do not equal evidence no matter how many times they're being echoed.

Very faulty logic. You can't say they don't have anything to gain. You don't know that this is the case. It is more logical to say: they did put out a false story so what it is that they are trying to cover-up?

      October 20, 2012 at 11:15 am | Reply
    • cami100k

Yes they did have something to gain. They pulled security away in August that would have fought off the terrorist attack that they were warned ahead of time, would happen. The whole mission was left with little defense to the promised terrorist attack. The mission including ambassador Stevens himself, asked for increased security but instead lost a whole team of security personnel– just one month prior to the attack.
What better way to spin this than to say it was a spontaneous reaction to a video, than telling the truth, that it was the terror attack that we were warned about, but did nothing to protect against.

The real story is that our ambassador SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN THERE PERIOD! The Red Cross and the British had already left because it was too dangerous and no longer safe. He should have been pulled out ....while they were leaving, we were trying to "normalize" our position there......when the evidence points to the fact we should not have been there. They knew they screwed up leaving him there.......
For those that don't think this is a cover up........when do you think this transparent administration is going to let us know who was leaking all the intelligence info this past year.........I am sure that will never be known as well......

He was not stationed there. It was a visit prior to closing it down completely. This was a consulate, not the embassy in Tripoli, where he was stationed. He also had a history of walking among the citizens with security driving behind him., not walking with him. He believed in making friends and he was very successful at it. However, there are still too many warring groups that hate each other to maske anywhere in that country safe. In this case, even if a couple of dozen Marines had been there, they couldn't stop 4-5 pre-aimed mortars and multiple RPGs along with outnumbering attackers. The fact is, it is still dangerous for any American there.

Intelligence leaks are as common as people making biased and inaccurate statements like yourself. Leaks are sometimes intentionally planted, as shown during the Bush era , or they're being randomly spread by individuals pushing their ideological agenda. In the Benghazi case it's clear assumptions were made by some officials influenced by regional events and incomplete or inaccurate intelligence. The only problem I see is that premature statements were made to the media, prior to having solid facts and throughly reviewed statements and talking points. That's all.

The Romney campaign is working their base into a frenzy over Benghazi and is working hard to distract from what really matters in this campaign – the economy. It is funny to watch how good Romney is good at manipulating his base. Romney is losing ground on the economy, women’s issues, and immigration. His 47% remark, which made it clear whose side he is really on, is resonating with the majority of hard working Americans who resent that remark and as much as he tries to flip flop and say he cares for everyone that doesn’t ring true. The tragic fact is that many people who are commenting here are part of the 47% that Romney looks down upon, but they don’t get that.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, last month unemployment in Ohio dropped to 7 percent, in Iowa the rate declined to 5.2 percent and in Wisconsin it dropped to 7.3. In Virginia the unemployment rate is 5.9 percent and in New Hampshire it is 5.7 percent. Housing starts are on the rise and the housing market is recovering. Won’t hear that from the Romney campaign…….

But when Obama has an Amabassador and 3 other people plus 16 wounded which they never mention and they try to cover it up it is nothing at CNN. What can you expect from people who support Crowley, she is a liberal hack for the Obama campaign. Obama never said nor did ANY OF HIS PEOPLE that it was terrorism in Benghazie, he was using it as a general term and we all know it. CNN COVERED HIS BUTT as usual. They have a tape that was running the whole time and show what was going on. They pulled out a team of 16 security forces per the State Dept request one month before the attack and left these guys out to dry although they asked repeated for help. He did not want to admit defeat as you remember it was his idea to bomb and help Quadafi get killed. Now they are killing us, somme Arab spring. THey say Al Queda has taken over in that region. We are going to get our butts handed to us again due to his policies just like we did on the first 9/11 after 8 years of Bill Clinton. First people want too much information and some of that information maybe sensative for a reason. Also funding was cut by the Republicans. Also this was a consulate NOT AN EMBASSY. A consulate is more of an office than an Embassy so it got even less funding. This was also a CIA headquarters that they didn't want to draw to much attention to.
ISSA is nothing but a witch hunter. It is too bad everything has become so polarized. Also, although this was tragically only 4 lives, and our hearts go out to the families, the Republicans did far worse when they were in office. THousands are dead because of their lies and Romney would get us into war with Iran and Syria. Be careful what you people ask for. You may just get something you really don't want.

Does it really matter what the immediate reaction was to the event to anyone beside rabid republicans that are trying to publicize the deaths of Americans to helps their candidate? The only reaction the American people should be worried about is what is going to be done in the future to prevent this type of tragedy. The Obama administration's reaction would have not saved a soul. The attack was over. Republicans are too stupid to realize that they should probably be hammering him on what happened before the attack. Then again Obama can bring up that Paul Ryan voted against extra funds for embassey protection. it's a sad situation but this isn't the game changer that the GOP thinks it is. Just look how hard Romney's re-election HQ (aka Fox "news") and the GOP minions are trying to push it. Just a reminder GWB got elected after the WMD debacle. Just think 4000+ dead Americans in iraq because of GWB intel failure. Makes Libya t look like small potatoes.

Many things have changed in the last 4 years. One of the most troubling though is that unfortunately we are no longer united as Americans, we are now solely Democrats and Republicans. This country appears to be more divided than ever. As a registered Republican, I have been disappointed in the past by some within the party, including our most recent former President Bush.
I did not vote for President Obama in the last election however I remained very optimistic about his term due to the fact that he promised two important things, transparency within the government administration and bipartisanship. To my dismay, these things never happened. As a matter of fact, it appears that just the opposite took place and not what was promised. Honesty and integrity are attributes that should be expected by all of us as a nation. I don't feel that coming from this administration. Even more troubling is that the media is now taking sides. We used to be able to count on the truth from them whether good or bad. They too, appear to have their own agenda. Walter Cronkite was a liberal but he was a journalist first and foremost. He did not compromise himself by putting a political spin on various events as they unfolded, HE JUST REPORTED THE NEWS. These are troubling times for this country in more ways than anyone can truly imagine. Who do we trust? The government? The media? In God we trust is a phrase that was a format for our own governmental and judicial existence. It became our national slogan. It is something that would help create an avenue for truth for all Americans. We admire and respect our founders of this great country but to be honest, I think that if they were all alive today, they would be deeply and emotionally disappointed in all of us.

A war that cost well over a trillion dollars that was never claimed on the budget. What a hack you are. Just give up.

I think you can draw an underlying correlation between the administration's reluctance to initially categorize the Benghazi attack as a premeditated act of terror with President Obama's decision to not sit down and meet with any of the world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly two weeks after the attack. During his brief visit to New York to address the U.N., President Obama did find the time, however, to sit down and speak with the ladies of "The View." It's obvious that the president's overriding priority is his reelection campaign, and Obama's national security record, the centerpiece of which is the killing of Osama bin Laden, is one of the clear highlights in a record that is a bit short on unequivocal accomplishments.

No deaths are optimal and that was the term used by Jon Stewart. President Obama will do what he is good at and will track down these killers and bring them to justice. Yes republicans who let every rotten and terrible thing Bush did in his Iraq War of choice go by, but will make this as big and terrible as they can. We know it is terrible and we know that it was tragic that the consulate was attacked by terrorists. We are very sorry about the America lives lost. But the GOP has no credibility with their determination to cut financies to the State Department and their cutting of funding for our embassies and consulates by millions on dollars.

Perhaps the President should not have repeated it once Stewart stated it... Like saying this is not even a proper discussion for what we are facing! Just saying, we only have one President at a time for a very good reason. But we kind of need them to unite and lead us and not quibble about how this effects their campaign!

His allegiance is not with America. he apologizes to the Islam for a video on the morning four innocent American's were killed which had nothing to do with it. He is not a leader but a dictator. How can a man who claims Rev. Wright his "mentor" for over twenty years be committed to helping America. Obama was drilled under Wright's ministry to hate America. Set the parties aside my friend. Democrates and Republicans can work together for the best of the American people. It is this President who has divided our country and our politicians. Dan you have a problem with the truth. President Obama will protect our embassies and our consulates. The big issue is that traitorous idiot who got all the Muslim world in an uproar with that anti-Muhammad video. That made it more dangerous and easier for these terrorists to decide to attack the Libya consulate. But that it took some time to get the facts from Libya is not the easiest thing to do when they were being attacked. I believe that it is the GOP that made the financial cuts to the State Department and to our embassies and consulates security that caused this to happen. The GOP has no integrity and no common sense about anything. To say I don't trust anything Romney or Ryan say is putting it mildly. These two men are liars and they lie often and maliciously.

Four American lives were lost. Every life is precious. But how soon we forget, in 1983 in the middle east the Marine base was bombed. Well over 200 of our finest were killed, buried in rubble after a suicide bomber drove past security and into the building. I will never forget because my unborn son's father survived that attack. Now, this was when Reagan was president. He soon withdrew our marines from that country. As long as their been a middle east, blood will be shed. That's how it's been and always will be. Rice, Clinton and the President should resign immediately as they have weakened our Great Nation, knowlingly allowed four innocent Americans to be unprotected in a state of high threat terror activity. How can America trust or have faith in an Adminstration that has deceived the American people. How much more has this Adminstration lied and deceived the American people. This Administration has failed the American people, they are not leaders, but dictators who are only interested in power to serve their interest. Honesty, Integrity, Faith, Hope, Trust, Character, Truth, These are not words known or displayed by this Administration. American lets change our course of direction on November 6th. Save America. The rush to judgement before a full detailed review by our intelligence agencies & White House of what occured in the attack on US Libyan consulate smacks of GOP election politics. In previous foreign attacks, we have had a unified support behind our President (no matter party affliation) against our attackers. The standard operating procedure, would be to sift through the details and fuse all the facts, identify the gulity and deliver justice where ever in the world they are located. But not this time, not with this attack during a election year, the GOP politicians have chosen to fashion a weapon out of the tragic loss of life in US Libya consulate attack, and use it as political assault against Pres. Obama right before Nov. 2012 election. How low can the GOP party, GOP congressmen and Romney campaign sink? After the twelve (12) terrorist attacks on US Embassies around the world during the Bush-Cheney presidency, their was no rush to skip over a full investigation or to play the blame game. After the 9 / 11 attacks in New York that brought down the Twin Towers, we rallied around President Bush, we did not point fingers within hours, days or weeks after the attack. There were no press release statements by Democrats stating Bush sympathized with our attackers, no one was calling Bush a muslim. Today we have GOP congressmen & the Romney campaign politicizing the event, they are trying to slap "Vote for Romney" bumper stickers on the gravestones of US embassy staff.

      For Historic accuracy:

12 Terrorist attacks on US Embassies During Bush-Cheney Presidency

      1. Jan. 22, 2002 Calcutta, India Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami gunmen attack Consulate

      2. June 14, 2002 Karachi, Pakistan al-Qaeda truck bomb detonates outside Consulate

      3. Oct. 12, 2002 Denpasar, Indonesia Consular Office bombed by Jemaah Islamiyah as part of the Bali bombings

      4. Feb. 28, 2003 Islamabad, Pakistan Unknown gunmen attack Embassy

      5. June 30, 2004 Tashkent, Uzbekistan Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan suicide bomber attacks Embassy

      6. Dec. 06, 2004 Jeddah, Saudia Arabia al-Qaeda gunmen raid diplomatic compound

      7. March 02, 2006 Karachi, Pakistan Car bomb explodes outside Embassy unknown

      8. Sept. 12, 2006 Demasacuc, Syria Gunmen raid US Embassy

      9. Jan. 12, 2007 Athens, Greece RPG Fired at Embassy by Revolutionary Struggle

      10. March 18, 2007 Sana’a, Yemen Mortar attack against US Embassy

      11. July 09, 2008 Istanbul, Turkey Armed attack against Consulate

12, Sept. 17, 2008 Sana’a, Yemen Two car bombs outside US embassy in Yemeni capital

After such a deadly attack, our US govt. has moved to immediately reinforce security at US Embassy locations and launched a full investigation. Let us remember our brave diplomats & staff, hug their families and stand united with our President against those who would harm our people and our country. We are all Americans, even during a highly tense election season.

Nobody is blaming him for the attack, we're skeptical of his response, and would like to know who dropped the ball? HE has politicized this by pushing a story that wasn't true, and then lying about it in the debate. I read the transcript, and so have plenty of other people. I challenge you to read it and find the quote for me that implicitly states that the attack in Benghazi was a terrorist act. I don't want an excerpt from the beginning spliced together with an excerpt from the end. Find one quote that supports the President's assertion that he called the Benghazi attack a terrorist act the following day. It isn't there. He uses the phrase "act of terror" only once, and it comes right after he mentions the attacks of 9/11/2001.

A different reaction to the event would not have saved a soul. If it was a cover-up it was the worst one ever because they called it a terrorist act the day after it happened. Pathetic GOP trolls.

        October 20, 2012 at 1:07 am |
      • john

Wilfully delusional. The only reason he was giving this speech in the Rose Garden was to acknowledge the Benghazi tragedy and state his policy for what to do next. It was OBVIOUS that the Benghazi killing and his use of the words 'acts of terror' were directly connected in the President's statement.

My husband was in the Army and was sent to Iraq with his unit. There was lots of Bush love by the commanders. My husband has the real inside story about what was going on in that war that Bush and Cheney forced on this country. Fortunately many came home safely and my husband was able to retire so that he did not have to keep returning again and again as so many in the military have had to do. War is hell and really is hell to be forced to go back again and again where people are trying to kill you or blow you up all the time.

Isn't this quote telling? Let's put out a number of talking points and see which one the public likes the most. This means intel was not driving the narrative. Public reaction was driving the narrative. So close to an election and with much of the Arab Spring in shambles, the intel had to be massaged for public consumption.

If Romney is smart, he will focus on the WHY there was not adequate security in place on the anniversary of 9.11. I think Obama campaign tried to cover up afterward, but they have done a good job of obfuscating it that it will difficult to prove easily to the general public. Obama will claim he is 'going after the people that did this', but the real issue is he had his eye off the ball focusing on the election instead of security for his foreign staff as Commander in Chief.

Romney needs to press for full transparency on Rice's Sunday morning talking points. Every state department email, and administration email should be public that lead to her appearances. The goal isn't to catch him being incompetent, that's fairly clear at this point. The goal is to prove that he misinformed the American public intentionally for political gain.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about an American-made video ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, U.S. officials have told The Associated Press.

So how does this jive with todays article by Ken Dilanian and Shashank Bengali at the Los Angeles Times? They quote "no evidence found of Al Qaeda role in Libya attack". They also stated " witnesses said members of the group that raided the U.S. mission specifically mentioned the video, which denigrated the prophet Muhammad". They conclude with "Now, however, said another official with access to the intelligence, "it may turn out that the initial assessment was not that far off". If they have this report why doesn't CNN. If the Republicans have evidence of Al Qaeda involvement, bring it, if not pipe down.

I think the easiest way to get to the bottom of this is to see the communications chain.... we're seeing the video that they all saw, the intel community has said that they thought it was terrorism with 24 hours. These are facts.

The facts I want now are the chain of events and instruction behind the 'movie/protest' brief.... Why can't the state department just show us the emails and communications, everything is out already. Nothing needs to be redacted for secrecy or to contain exposure, right. Show us all of the direction that lead to Susan Rice's accounting on the 5 morning shows the Sunday following the attack.

At minimum they could give us a timeline on how the facts we already know came down the pipe. Should be pretty easy to see who got what, who was cc'd. Conversely, then show us the communication chain that lead to Susan Rice's talking points and her media appearances. Remember, she spoke on those shows 5 days after... Nordstrom and others have said that there was clear intel within 24 hours that the attacks were terrorist based. You're going to tell me that there was so much confusion (4 days worth) that somehow the State Department didn't distill this info to the person who was supposed to explain what went on to the nation. Don't be naive, get real.

The cutbacks have been all over the news for a week. This matter is nothing more than a storm in a tea cup. Obama will prevail for another 4 years. But, who am I to burst your bubble?

The classic Friday evening info dump.....for those of you still trying to defend this admin, who still believe what they are telling you is not a lie......who believe Crowley didn't stage a set-up and throw the debate.....who think B.O. going on Letterman, The View, The United Nations(!) blaming a video 2wks later (and jailing a U.S. citizen) wasn't OFFENSIVE........who believe that calling "actS of terror" in general referring to 9/11 _NOT Benghazi_ in the rose garden means the same thing................for those of you that believe these things, enjoy the movie..................this horror flick will soon be over. "It wasn't until after the points were used in public that people reconciled contradictory information and assessed there probably wasn't a protest around the time of the attack," the official told CNN.........

WASHINGTON (AP) – The CIA station chief in Libya reported to Washington within 24 hours of last month's deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate that there was evidence it was carried out by militants, not a spontaneous mob upset about an American-made video ridiculing Islam's Prophet Muhammad, U.S. officials have told The Associated Press.-Kimberly Dozier...Really???

  89. Enough!

More spin about how long it took the intelligence community to decide the attack in Libya was something other than a "spontaneous demonstration" gone awry? Within a couple of days (September 12th and 13th), the National Post of Canada and the New York Times had both published articles about how relief forces arriving to evacuate Americans from the secret "safe house" in Benghazi had been "ambushed" and the compound was hit by mortar fire. As the articles noted, an ambush using mortars is a military-style operation – not something that angry mobs do.

That's okay. CNN can try to spin for the adminstration all it wants, but soon we will have all the facts when all of the cables come out.; which I believe will be sooner rather than later.

I hope we see the cables too. But I imagine we won't get to bottom of Obama's ruse until after the election. At this point it's pretty clear that Axelrod is trying to spread the floor and run out the clock. BTW – I don't care for Axelrod, but truly believe he is the brains behind the Administration, albeit very unethical.

The truth will never be told on the Obama Media Network, this is such a sham, you should all be ashamed of yourself, but I believe in Karma and you will reap what you sew in time, just hope I live long enough to see that, you are pathetic.

Will karma serve justice to the GOP for the killing of innocent lives in Iraq and Afghanistan or destroying our economy, just before Obama's 1st term? What have they sown since the midterm election? Nothing but obstruction.
I also wait for justice to be served.

This is an obvious case of the tale trying to wag the dog. Since when does politics dictate when and what our intelligence should say? Why should every foreign event be exposed to the public immediately, without consideration for what is happening on the ground and behind the scenes?
The GOP needs to stop interfering with global situations. They are only fanning the flames and putting innocent people in potentially mortal danger.
Remember the backlash against Bachmann's foolish rhetoric about this administration's links to the Muslim Brotherhood? Hillary Clinton's motorcade was attacked in Egypt, just because of irresponsible allegations.

Because 4 Americans are dead, they repeatedly asked for more help and were denied, now the Commander in Chief, if you can call him that has spent weeks trying to avoid the truth – Open your eyes, this is just the tip of the iceberg, our leader is Muslim leaning – not America friendly

  93. Something Wrong Here

FACT1: Obama and company have been caught trying to cover up Benghazi attack by claiming common day protesters turned violet over a video…….WHY: They didn’t want Americans to know al-Qaeda is alive and well and our diplomats were not adequately protected……………Despite Several Request.

FACT2: The video explanation was televised by Obamas administration on many talk shows and a UN speech……..This broadcasting of the Video incited many riots with additional deaths (mainly Muslim) …..Many Many Muslim knew little of video until after the Obama administration mass broadcasting of it.

FACT3: A video of our own was created apologizing for the disparaging video (the one Obama and company advertised) and broadcast in Muslim countries on tax payer’s dime!

    This is impeachment material folks!!!!!!!

Your beliefs are not necessarily facts. This administration had nothing to do with the anti-Muslim video that caused the riots.
One fact is that the GOP cut funding for security in foreign embassies. That's why the requests were refused. Security is not cheap. Professionals are pretty reluctant to put their lives on the line for free.
But, by all means, keep searching for right wing rhetoric and post it as fact!
Whatever happened to patriotism, where citizens supported their elected leaders, instead of misusing freedom of speech to tear them down?

Actually, there was no funding cut. The repubs just didn't increase the budget as much as the administration wanted. There was still an increase in the budget fromthe year before. (isn't it lovely how Washington calculates that? They don't increasethe budget as much as they were planning to and it is considered a budget cut) Also, the State Department has come out and said that the "cuts" had nothing to do with the lack of security. Please inform yourself on this topic before you make ascinine statements.

Something Wrong – what you state as facts, like many right-wing haters of Obama, are anything but – they are OPINIONS, which of course like the extremist mentality driving the Republican Party, is inevitably followed by ludicrous claims that if it were a cover-up, it's an impeachable offense, further elucidating your lack of real-world understanding of context and appropriateness.

There is as yet, not clear evidence that there was a cover-up, at best looking like confusion and multiple parties being unable to get themselves squared away with regards to assessments and the subsequent information they portray. Your justification that they didn't want the information share was that it was because they feared everyone knowing about Al Qaeda is just asinine, because Obama's administration has been saying for months, if not years, that Al Qaeda remains a threat, despite being severely diminished, so your point only looks even more like irrational right-wing paranoia.

As to you points 2 and 3, more crazy paranoid, non-fact-based hysteria which entirely too common within the right these days, trying to whip up emotions instead of analyzing things rationally.

Sounds as rational and unemotional an argument, as Eva Longoria makes. Not even MSNBC can spin their way out of Obama's latest disaster of incompetence, dishonesty, and misinformation. This President is clearly overmatched by the challenges of his Presidency. But keep screaming "liar", it's very effective.

Obama has 4 years of outstanding foreign issues record, and I will trust him 500% on him. Even Bin Laden understood Obama's skills and resolve.

Are you serious? You need to forget about Fran, and begin to read. Digest many news sources, because they are all biased. Gather what little facts they provide amidst all the opinion and vitriol, which you're taking part in now BTW. Then when you have enough facts establish your own view of this issue not talking points from someone else. This is the problem with our news and Americans today, we're not really willing to educate ourselves.

I agree 100%!! I like her but she WAS NOT there and then finally says we dont know what was said or what was going on after the attack. The journalist was correct to say it could have been a combination of spontaneous and planned attack
