U.S. officials believe Iran is behind recent cyberattacks

By Mike Mount, with reporting from Suzanne Kelly and Pam Benson

The United States believes that Iran is behind cyberattacks on American banks and the oil industry in the Middle East, officials said.

Although officials have not made such an assertion publicly, they have characterized the attacks that occurred in recent months as initiated by a "state actor." The U.S. intelligence apparatus observed and tracked the attacks as coming out of Iran, a third official said Monday. The official would not describe further what was observed but said the belief is the perpetrators were surrogates working with the Iranian government.

“We strongly believe there is a relationship between the people typing the code and people running the government,” according to the official.

"It certainly is the case that Iran is improving its capabilities in the cyber field. We're paying attention. We are concerned about their increasing ability to operate in this realm," a U.S. intelligence official said.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta noted the attacks in a speech last week and warned that United States must beef up its cyber defenses or risk a potentially devastating strike.

Calling it a "pre-9/11 moment," Panetta said he is particularly worried about a significant escalation of attacks and highlighted a cyber virus known as "Shamoon." The virus infected the computers of major energy firms in Saudi Arabia and Qatar this past summer.

In Saudi Arabia, more than 30,000 computers were rendered useless by the attack on the state oil company ARAMCO. Ras Gas was affected in Qatar.

Panetta said the attacks were probably the most devastating to ever hit the private sector.

Iran denied any involvement in the attack on the oil industry, according to a report broadcast Monday on PRESS TV, a government-run news agency.

"One of the main aims of the United States is to make itself look like the victim," said Mehdi Ahkavan Bahabadi, the director of the Iran Cyberspace Center.

The report noted Iran itself has been the victim of numerous online assaults, including Stuxnet, a complex cyberattack against its nuclear program believed to have been created by American and Israeli programmers.

Panetta's speech also covered recent attacks against large U.S. banks, which hit with unprecedented speed and disrupting services to customers.

While the attacks did not do any significant damage or result in any financial losses, it caught the attention of U.S. intelligence, according to officials.

Officials said they have not heard any talk with in the government regarding a possible retaliatory strike for the cyber attack on the banking system.

Panetta did not publicly say Iran was behind both attacks but sources say that is what U.S. officials believe.

The New York Times reported that while there seems to be no real evidence that the cyber attacks were sanctioned by the Iranian government,

U.S. officials have begun to focus their suspicion on a recently created Iranian military unit called "cybercorps."

The unit was developed in response to American and Israeli cyberattacks on the Iranian nuclear enrichment plant at Natanz.

The administration that lied about the attack on the American Consulate in Libya is now telling us Iran is behind the Cyber attacks! Political opportunism or incompetence? Hard to tell when you don't trust.....Maybe it's because of the anti-Muslim film!! Looks like Hillary will be the scapegoat on the Libya cover-up. Anybody and everybody is expendable. "The buck stops with me", says Hillary. No, Hillary, the buck stops with the PRESIDENT!!! It's time to hold this dirty lying politician from Chicago accountable!!

The whole war on terror is a complete hoax. There is no weapons of mass destruction. What we are seeing in the last decade is every pathetic attempt to maintain the US dollar as the world's currency. Iran wants to move the cost of their oil onto gold standards just like Iraq tried to accept strictly Euro's for theirs. Thats all its about. Period. America ruined their whole economy and sorry but when did America's economy become more important than our planet and humanity? So go ahead and vote Romney, in 4 years from now you'll regret doing it

The American people MUST break away from their weak willed selves, stop complaining.and DEMAND changes by our government. We allow them to bully us as they constantly deceive. WE MUST NOT ALLOW THE US GOVERNMENT TO DECIDE THE FATE OF OUR LIVES! THEY DO NOT- SPEAK FOR US, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. We must as a nation, collectively DEMAND CHANGES before they start a WAR that gets out of hand and destroys us all. RIGHT NOW! WE WILL NOT HAVE WAR!! Even if we have to forcefully make these changes. THE PEOPLE, give governments their power. AND WE CAN TAKE IT AWAY. They have abused the vested power and us for too long. This world is pathetic as a human race and as it stands, WE ARE ALL BEASTS, and will die like animals if the world continues this way. CAN NO ONE SEE THIS?? It's like a bad dream that won't end as you slowly try to escape while your enemy constantly gains before devouring you.... HUMANS OF THE WORLD, ALL RACES RELIGIONS AND COUNTRIES- GIVE YOURSELF DISCIPLINE AND WILL, BE THE DIVINITY INSIDE YOU THAT MAKES UP THE ESSENCE OF HUMAN SPIRIT AND STRENGTH AND LET'S GO TO THE EDGE OF ETERNITY. THERE IS LOGICALLY, NO REASON WHY WE CAN'T BE THE BEST CREATION IN EXISTENCE CREATING THE PERFECT EXISTENCE IF WE JUST COME TOGETHER. CAUSE AS IT STANDS NOW, WE ARE ALL JUST BEASTS WAITING FOR THE SLAUGHTER.

Thanks for your patience if you actually read that rant.

Not sanctioned by the Iranian government. Of course not ... neither were those "students" who took over the U.S. embassy in Teheran, who took all those Americans hostage, after the Grand Ayatollah Komeini came to power in the revolution in the late 1970s. Also note, the Taliban is a reference to "students" and the way these Muslim radicals operate, according to standard operating procedures, is to allow, and then blame the "students" for what their leaders have quietly sanctioned.

Oh how much do we as Americans forget? The U.S. and England CIA and MI-6 over through the Iranian government in the late 40s or 50s in order to control the oil, then the U.S. and England install the Shaw of Iran who was our bed fellow and allowed us to setup spy stations in Iran to monitor the Russians which gave rise to the Iranians raiding the U.S. Embasay. The U.S. And British multi-national corporations and Governments are all about control of resources mainly gas and oil. Just look at who has all the Iraq oil contracts, it's mostly U.S. and British oil companies which explains the pretext for war there to begin with. What we have done in the past will come back on us as a nation, me must Man up and take what we give ( what goes around comes around) so don cry foul when it's done to us.

Now, let me get this straight. You are actually complaining about Iran using electronic methods to attack the computer systems of Amerikan banks and the energy sector. This is after odd revelations that are almost never made about the US and Israel producing the so-called Stuxnet virus attack on computers in control of radioactive material in Iran. At least Iran was responsible enough not to attack a domestic nuclear power plant. How does The Government get away with this stuff? It is incomprehensible.

Even Canadians are smart enough to know this is absolutely ridiculous. If the American public believe garbage like this, god help us all. Americans need to stop blaming Obama. Trillions of dollars spent on warfare, unqualified mortgages accross the board, outsourcing key manufactoring jobs. America created this economic crisis themselves and don't blame Obama because NO BODY had the tools to fix this mess in 4 years. The US dollar can no longer be the world's currency, face it. I know its been hard but Americans have enjoyed enough glory in there days. Its time your economy takes back seat for the time being because our planet and humanity is the real crisis right now. But what the hell do I know? I'm only your neighbor, best friend and enjoyng my countries stable economy and democracy

I agree. The U.S. "believes" its corrupt judicial system is ethical, honest, and diligent. It's nothing more than an auction house staffed by crooks... it's a criminal enterprise... and will continue to be one UNTIL Americans demand lawyers are prevented from holding legislative and executive branches of government. So, what the US government "believes" is usually "be as dishonest as possible to get rich"... and toss the 99% under the bus if we get richer.

We don't need war, just a few well placed spies to take out the top ten in the Iranian government, let the people of Iran take over. The people of Iran do not want nuclear weapons, they want ipods, microwaveable, car parts etc.. stop making this about rich republicans wanting war so they can get richer, you sound more ignorant that Joe biden during the debate

The issue is that the Iranian goverment is Crazy. They desire to destoy Israel, even if 95% of their people are killed in retalation.
So, NO these people are not responsible enough to own a nuclear device.
Perhaps if they change out their government to an honest one, Iran would have a hope of growing into a strong, honorable country.

I am tired, to my soul. Somebody attacks somebody. Someone else does something to someone.
I am so tired of it all.
Muslims, and Muslim extremists scream about the pain caused by America and the West, but no one screams about the pain caused by the Muslim extremists. No one stands up for the inoccents hurt by Muslim terrorists. Everybody calls it "collateral damage", and no one cares.
I wish, that everybody that lives on this small planet, could feel the pain, that the survivors, and family members, of the innocent victims of sensless war for ideaology, and war for territory, and war for sake of war, have felt. We, all of us, the human race, is to blame for all of this.
Not one, or the other, but every single person alive is to blame for their inactivity, to stem the pain of millions.
I am not white, or black. Not Christian, Jew, Muslim, or any other faith. I am not American, Arabian, not European, or Asian. I am human, and I hurt, for everyone.
If some god, came to me, and asked if I would die, a most painful death, to save all of huumanity, from itself, for all to be granted peace, no matter what their faith, race, or any other thing..... I would gladly do so.
Please stop it all. If you are alive, then stop all of this.
    You only hurt us all.

America needs to adhere to international law and stop bullying the rest of the world into supporting murderous attacks on other people. The rest of the world needs leaders who can see through the thin arguements used by America to inflict pain on Iran. Iran is not building a bomb and there is no evidnce that they want to,
One sure way to make Iran change it's mind on going for a bomb..... is to humiliate them and cripple them without mercy.

I don't doubt our dragging the feet in Afghanistan is mostly to keep us close to an unpredictable Pakistan with Taliban supporters and existing nuclear bombs. No war thank you. We've had our fill. Time to fill the coffers and get our house in order. Maybe next decade. Thanks for stopping by.

Yeah, dude! And don't forget the evil corporations and military-industrial complex. Power to the people! Right on! We need to harness the power of love, man, not the atom! If we gave Iran some love, they'd love us back. Outta sight!

I guess this is what happens when Iran wages constant verbal war on Israel, the west, and any other culture... When it comes to war which it will they won't discriminate in who they kill on our soil. So why you support not your own walls and government is beyond me.

We should thank Iran for doing what our government wouldn't do; punishing the banks for killing our economy, sticking it to the middle class, and paying themselve billions out of their immoral gains.

Yeah, right, Iran couldn't stop the 'bug' the US & Israel planted at their Nuke plants, why would I believe a 'Lying Government' when they come out with this story??? Anything & Everything the US & Israel can come up with as an 'Excuse' to Attack Iran will be used. I say, let the Jews 'Go it Alone' – for cripes sake, we've got them stockpiled with enough nukes to wipe out all of the mid-east, LOL

Funny how in the middle of the article, US and Israeli forces were "suspected" of being those responsible for the cyber attacks on Iran, yet at the bottom of the article, the author clearly states that those attacks indeed were caused by the US and Israel.

Gee, I feel so secure with this administration protecting us. Just like the ambassador to Libya. But it's ok – the Iranians are just attacking because of the anti-Mohammed film and all we need to do is put that guy in jail and it all be fine.

Unless you are in Libya or elsewhere in the middle east, I would not worry about your own safety.

I mean, it's not like a bunch of commercial airplanes were hijacked and crashed into our skyscrapers, killing thousands of our citizens on our own soil. I wonder if there was a memo on President Obama's desk that said "Al Qaeda determined to attack US Consulate in Libya" because, if there was, and he did nothing to try to stop it, that would be really screwed up.

Lets see who's infrastructure is most computerized and will take the biggest damage from these kind of malware.

Repeated studies have shown that there is a greater incidence of child molestation and incest among southern white evangelical Christians than in any other group that participated in the study. Living in cramped quarters (such as trailer parks) is one of the main causes of perverted behavior among Christians. Those requiring further proof need only to take a casual drive south of the Mason-Dixon Line. The abundance of toothless Christian cretins you will see are a direct result of generations of inbreeding. Historians have long theorized that the south lost the civil war because of the many mentally challenged soldiers in the Confederate army, also a result of this inbreeding.
Oddly enough, many of these Christian misfits make their way north or west where they can be found working in gas stations and car washes. And yes, some do end up in Congress on the republican side of the aisle. And some end up in mainstream cinema, appearing in such classics as Deliverance, Smokey and The Bandit and the Dukes of Hazards.
From those comment, you can find, who are those inbreeds.
