US intelligence warned embassy in Egypt of concern about anti-Muslim film

By Suzanne Kelly

Concerned about the reaction to an anti-Muslim film that was gaining attention online, the U.S. intelligence community sent a cable to the embassy in Egypt warning of the concern, a U.S. official told CNN. It was sent 48 hours before the protests in Cairo and Benghazi in Libya, the official said.

The cable did not discuss any specific threat, the official said. It warned instead about the existence of the movie being posted on the internet and the fact that it was gaining attention. A seven minute portion of the movie aired on an Egyptian TV talk show the weekend before the protests started, according to a Department of Homeland Security/Federal Bureau of Intelligence memo obtained by CNN on Thursday.

The cable was not sent to the embassy in Tripoli, Libya or the consulate in Benghazi. US officials have said there was no intelligence ahead of the attack in Benghazi, which intelligence officials still believe was not planned. The White House spokesman Jay Carney said Friday there was no "actionable intelligence" indicating an attack was being planned.

There are hundreds if not thousands of cables sent each day, the official said, and there was no specific threat attached to this one, because a specific threat was not known.

UN Ambassodor Susan Rice flat out lied on the Sunday news talk shows about the nature of the attacks in Libya and Cairo. Why isn't CNN and other "news" orgs all over that? They've let even a blatant, in our faces lie go. WHY?

Unless Muslims convert to Christianity the same violence, hatred, discrimination will continue. Muslims should consider converting to ANY Middle Eastern Christian Church both share the same language, culture and traditions EXCEPT the satanic Islamic faith which is the cause of all evil around the world.

All of the negativity being vented on our country, by it's own citizens, is pretty pathetic. As I have perused the responses I've seen in this thread, I can't help but see similarities with Hollywood gossip columns. Picking one another apart, insulting one another, or turning these traumatic events, on yet another 9/11, into internal conflict is completely non-productive. Whatever our political affiliations might be, we are Americans. We need to be standing together!

I live in the United States and believe it is a great nation, however, I believe their frustration is not only from their fiscally delicate situation but their inability to show their pride in their past. Calling names doesn't help the issue, this may make you feel better for a moment. I agree we should not fund nations that harbor extremist in their county and allow them to destroy places like embassies and people that are leaders to support democracies in their regions with intentions to only help their county. This is a shame, it appears this nation disrespects America, after all it was their own people who produced this so called film. In America we have heard it all, our Christian beliefs are insulated on a regular basis and we don't behave like this Muslim people, we are a peaceful people and freedom of speech is all our rights in American, we should not bow down and we must stand our ground. We are a free nation and liberty for all, our rights are our freedoms and the Muslim only know the bondage that they are taught, they have a long long way to go.

I too believe that we should bring all our personnel home and stop funding these extremist nations. If they can't protect our people they do not deserve our help. It is not the fault of most of the people in these countries, it is extremist. But the people elect or let those in power stay there so in the long wrong they are as much at fault as the leaders. Look at what the republicans are doing to our country, and look at the people that voted them in.

We have invested a lot of resources in India over the past two decades and given a lot of aid to prop it up. There has been no investment on this return. Instead India has squandered all the resources in building nuclear weapons while poverty remains rampant in the country. We need to revisit our relationship with India. American taxpayers will not tolerate this anymore. We need to take care of our own populace going forward. We cannot be exporting jobs to India or giving it financial or technical handouts. It has become too big to govern or create any value for western countries or even for its own population. India needs to be carved up into smaller independent states to be a viable economically and geo politically.

I don't know where the fault lies; it seems to be spread around among White House staff and intelligence agencies. I do know that it is reported that Obama attended less than 60% of all security briefings. Jay Carney does not dispute that but says that he "read" the daily reports, in my mind not the same as discussions with security experts. Obviously, Clinton and Obama made NO preparations for the possibility of attacks on the anniversary of 9/11, nor did the fact that the Benghazi Embassy had been attacked numerous times in June, July, and August. They ignored security alerts from the UK and the fact that the UK closed their Benghazi embassy because of the extreme danger. Obama is unfit to be president. Clinton is a loser, and CNN is untrustworthy for not reporting the facts which are coming out in other media. They cannot protect Obama from fault in this horrible tragedy.

Okay. So this explains the apology issued by U.S. Embassy in Cairo at noon before any of the action. How naive and what an utter failure Obama is. He thought an apology would smooth things over, but it acted as acknowledgment of a film that no one ever saw. The attacks were planned due to 9/11 anniversary, not a film. I am ashamed of Obama. Happens on both sides. Frankly, I find it incredibly annoying when I see the same lies posted as fact over and over and over. He is an amateur, a complete failure, and he is running a vile, and hateful campaign. Those of us who read the more honest press than CNN and MSNBC, have been getting the facts which are now being aired on CNN, and that is that there WERE warnings about Benghazi, there were many prior attacks on Benghazi, that both Israel and the US received warnings from Egypt about the dangers to their embassies in Egypt, and that the US knew that the building in Benghazi was not secure and that there were no American guards at Benghazi...Clinton and Obama knew; they did nothing. Some warn that the recent event could potentially run into another Arab-Spring style of uprising, this time against American. Yet, there is a big different between Arab Spring and this recent event. The former was a huge explosion of discontents that have been suppressed for decades by dictatorial regimes across Middle East and affected a large percentage of the population. The recent event is simply a burst of emotion among a tiny crowd fueled by hatred of US influence. If you notice, the crowd that attacked the embassies are more or less than 1000 people, while the vast silence majority of Arab nations offers some quiet level of understanding and tolerance as most religions do. We should base our foreign policy on the silence majority.

I hope our government keep a cool head, not over-react and do the radical elements a big favor by unintentionally fueling the fire further....

I would feel better if the local government would dispatch rapid police forces to defend the embassies under attack. I would also feel better if the US Marines defending the embassies were NOT PROHIBITED FROM CARRYING AMMUNITION FOR THEIR WEAPONS. I did notice a couple of ladies carrying signs that proclaimed the violence did not speak for them. Bottom line, they don't want us there, so let us leave. Let's take our toys and go home.

The problem is that there were no marines in Libya. The "security" was provided by Libyan nationals who had no bullets.

And as far as the BILLIONS those countries have received, stop sending them the money. Our own children in this country are going to bed hungry, their teeth are rotting, and they are malnourished. Our elderly can't afford to buy their medicines. Enought already. Obviously those people don't want us. Fine with me, solve your own damned problems. You stay in your country and do your honor killings and shoot each others' children. We give up. Live your wonderful lives and leave the rest of the planet alone. You don't need our money, our medicine, or our food. Do it your own selves. Embassies and Consulants of the United States are considered United States. Where were the marine guards? What were their rules of engagement. If people jump over the walls of our embassies and consulants the marines should fire warning shots and if they do not stop then the marines should fire and try to wound them. If the marines feel their lives are in danger then they should fire into the people.

It is the responsiblity of the host country to protect foreign embassies and consulants. If the host country is unable or unwilling to do that then the marine guards need to protect themselfs

The embassy in Cairo was warned that the public in a country with A LOT of domestic terrorism ( mostly against Christians) was angry about a movie that mocked Islam.

That fact pails in comparison to the fact that the embassies weren't better protected on 9/11. I found it really offensive to see those black al-qaeda style flags flying over the US embassy in Cairo on the anniversary of 9/11. The embassy staff cowering in fear. I found it pretty offensive that terrorists were able to attack the US consulate in Libya and kill the ambassador on the anniversary of 9/11. I don't even remember what Mitt Romney said exactly.

Romney hasn't shown these traits, he seems to care only about the wealthly and helping them get even more wealthy! Everyone else is "on their own"!
How many "rich kids" get killed and maimed in our stupid wars? NONE! Ending the draft wasn't such a good idea. If rich kids were getting killed, this mess would have ended years ago. Would Romney send his sons to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Libya ? Certainly not!

Wow. Yesterday the WH flatly DENIED any notice whatsoever of any kind of pending attack. Flat, outright denial. Not "we'll check it out" or "we need to gather info". Outright denied it, questioning where the British newspaper got its info and suggesting a credibility problem.

Now it is common news about some kind of warning 48 hours prior. And CNN just slaps the story up in its "don't look at that, look at this" method. Lol.

Sadly, concerning the death of an American, the State Department and Obama's WH have just bold-face lied to every American. And watch oh so many line up to vote for this magician again. The combined IQ of the crowds chanting "4 more years" is probably in the double-digits.

CNN could improve their ratings by getting rid of Piers Morgan (and a few other aliens).
I used to enjoy CNN TV after work, but I can't stand Morgan! He is not "one of us"!
Instead I have to watch FOX, and all their BS! It's more entertaining than "Piers Morgan"!!!

C'mon guys, the State Department was only taking Obama's lead. HOPE that the Film would not cause any problems like the Dutch Cartoon did, and once it did explode, CHANGE the subject to "it was not actionable" info.

I do not get the last paragraph in this report. If there "are 100's if not 1000's of cable sent" to each embassy each day, then either do not send them, or have someone READ THEM. Didn't the Dutch Cartoon episode teach our STATE DEPARTMENT ANYTHING?

Nope. This administration has no intelligence. I'm sorry, but it was such a softball.

AMbassad21- if you read the article you;d see the embassy was warned. THen when they get attacked, the amabassador apologizes to the Islamic world. Romney complained about the apology. You don't seem to get it. If the knee jerk reaction of the ambassador was to apologize, it was policy.

Mitt Romney and his wingers thought they could lie their way about Obama to a November victory. Now they're acting out their frustration in the worst possible way because they realize the rest of America is not as dumb as they are. Obama/Biden 2012

Spare me.. Obama has no idea what he's doing.. Hilary even said he needs a 'foreign policy manual.'

Speak the truth, the left calls it lies. How lams.

        Dear Fred,
The Middle East is and always will be a powder keg. Foreign policy over there is changing regularly with government coups and take overs, new leaders and new perceived threats by radicals. All policies regarding it should change regularly to go with the times. No one, not even your beloved Mitt can claim they have all the answers in regards to the Middle East.. Look at both candidates reactions. Mitt would have inflamed the situation by going in guns blazing versus a more diplomatic response from the POTUS. I choose diplomacy and a cool head in the face of unrest and turmoil. We cant afford another war, financially or from the standpoint of our reputation in the world. Precisely why I will be choosing Obama (again) in 2012.

Wow. So its a lie to say Obama has missed more than HALF OF HIS DAILY INTELLIGENCE BRIEFINGS? Do you think its important for a President to those so he understands when these kind of threats are coming? Or are you so blinded by your ideology that you don't care? Perhaps if Obama cared more about the lives of people like Diplomat Stevens, our President would go to his intelligence briefings and Stevens might still be alive. This could have been prevented. But let's not let that get in that way of your messiah and his reelection campaign. Pathetic.

False. Obama missed NO briefings because there were NO briefings. Like Clinton did, he receives written briefs and responds the same way with comments and questions. Bush requested in-person briefings because he said he didn't want to read them. Both this fallacy and the "embassy Marines have no ammo" falsehood are being promoted big time by Fox and other right-wing outlets. Get your easy-to-find-the-truth facts straight BEFORE you get outraged.

And of course you being on the "Left" have all the "facts" because you, kaydevo, work for the State Dept. Thank you for your complete and knowledgable insights.

        Read it and weep:

"In reality, Obama didn’t “attend” these meetings, because there were no meetings to attend: The oral briefings had been mostly replaced by daily exchanges in which Obama reads the materials and poses written questions and comments to intelligence officials. This is how it was done in the Clinton administration, before Bush decided he would prefer to read less. Bush’s results — Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, and the failure to find Osama bin Laden — suggest this was not an obvious improvement." – Dana Milbank, Washington Post
