President Barack Obama talked with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a call Tuesday night about the threat posed by Iran's nuclear program, according to a White House statement.
Obama placed the call to Netanyahu, a senior administration official told CNN.
The one-paragraph statement from the White House, which referred to the Obama-Netanyahu discussion as "a part of their ongoing consultations," followed reports earlier in the day that the White House had rejected a request by Netanyahu to meet with Obama this month to discuss Iran's nuclear program.
CNN's Wolf Blitzer, citing Israeli sources, reported that the Israelis were told Obama's schedule would not permit a meeting even though Israel offered to have Netanyahu travel to Washington.
Obama and Netanyahu are both due to address the United Nations in New York in late September but not at the same time.
The Obama administration pushed back later Tuesday.
"Contrary to reports in the press, there was never a request for Prime Minister Netanyahu to meet with President Obama in Washington, nor was a request for a meeting ever denied," the White House said Tuesday night in its statement, which made reference to "our close cooperation on Iran and other security issues."
Netanyahu has shown growing impatience with what he says is a lack of clarity by the Obama administration on articulating so-called "red lines" that Iran cannot cross if it wants to avoid war over its nuclear ambitions.
The administration has resisted pressure to take that step.
U.S. intelligence officials have said they do not believe Iran has decided to develop a nuclear weapon, even as evidence continues to mount that they are improving their ability to do so. Iran said its intentions are peaceful.
Atomic enrichment in and of itself is not the red line, a U.S. official told CNN.
But Israel feels a sense of urgency with negotiations aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions failing to produce an agreement and sanctions falling short of their intended effect.
Concerns in Washington that Israel could launch a pre-emptive strike on Iran's nuclear facilities prompted a wave of visits this summer to Israel by several top Obama administration officials.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said that he is confident the United States is capable of monitoring Iran and can strike militarily, if necessary.
"We have pretty good intelligence on them, we keep a close track on them," Panetta told CBS' "This Morning" in an interview aired on Tuesday.
"We think we've got the ability to be able to strike at them effectively if we have to ... whenever we have to, we have the forces in place," he said.
The U.S. official, who spoke anonymously in order to freely discuss the sensitive issue, said Panetta is "frustrated" by the partial impact of sanctions, saying he has not seen "the kind of response" that would have been expected from the Iranian regime, given that the sanctions have been tightened.
The United States has sanctioned Iranian banks, companies and individuals as part of an effort by western powers to pressure the Tehran government.
Netanyahu also said sanctions were only having a partial impact.
"The sanctions have hurt the Iranian economy, but they haven't stopped the Iranian nuclear program. That's a fact," Netanyahu said on Tuesday at a news conference in Jerusalem.

Yes Paul, each and every time I wrte a detailed comment describing the several ways the Israels sell or otherwise transfer US military technology to the Chinese military it is summarily deleted. Whenever I post quotes made by Ehud Barack during his visit to China last summer where he spoke warmly of future cooperation between the Israeli and Chinese militaries it is summarily deleted.
It seems CNN will allow a degree of anti-Israeli name calling on it's discussions for the sake of appearances, but as soon as someone puts a detailed account of how Israel is putting US service personnel at risk by passing US military secrets they are trusted with to the Chinese, it is deleted because, I presume, the facts of the matter are overwhelming and some of CNNs patrons read these boards and take strong exception to the truth being revealed.

Though both faiths (christianity and islam) have it's followers that are violent, the two beliefs differ dramatically. Jesus says to love your enemy, Muhammod says to conquer infidels. Without christianity as the belief system at the beginning of our country, freedom of religion (or lack thereof) would not thrive. If we were first founded by muslims, we would be living under sharia civil law, not judaeo law. Even atheists believe in some sort of civil law.

The bible differs in the explaination of the physical world that we observe around us. Jesus talked of Noah, and he talked of Adam and Eve. So Jesus believed the bible's account of our world's evolution/creation. I choose to beleive Jesus' account of history. Modern science discounts the flood which is key in their errors in observation.

Yes, the official re-birth of the State of Israel was administered by the UN(League of Nations at that time) in 1948. Since Brittian controlled these lands, the world gave Israel back it's boundries of it's ancient biblical (verifiable) land. Israel only expanded as a result of Arab attacks. My suggestion is that this miracle is of God's direction. God drove the Jews out of the land in 70 A.D., and has brought them back in 1948.

I feel that President Obama's refusal to meet with the Prime Minister of Israel is a "slap in the face" to all Americans of the Jewish faith and our friends. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. Israel is the only country in that area of the world that provides for freedom of religion, freedom of speech, etc. The Iranian regime is developing nuclear weapons! The Iranian regime is dedicated to the obliteration of the State of Israel, the destruction of the United States, and the Islamization of the entire world (to their extreme form of Islam). They are a fanatical regime, similar to that of Nazi Germany. The Iranian regime denies the Holocaust, and they foster terrorism throughout the world. Mark my word, the Iranian regime will use its nuclear weapons. The Iranian people tried to have demonstrations in 2009 to show their distaste for the Iranian dictatorship, but the western democracies did not support them. The government of Israel is interested only in what is perceived to be the best interest of Israel. This is not Israel. The U.S.A. has its own Israel. Where our interests coincide, we should work together. However, where they differ, then each should go its own way. There is no support in the U.S.A. for sending our armed forces to fight - and die - for Israel. Additionally, even Isrraeli intelligence and military experts have publcly stated that an air or missile attack on Iran will not have a significant effect on Iran's nuclear capability because the sites are well protected.
There is support to continue the fight for freedom, and that idealogic war is centered around Israel. They must have our support. Our military is still voluntary and many have and will continue to support the free world.

There is no question that Israel has spies operating in the U.S. The state of Israel is not a friend to the U.S. or anyone else on the planet. We are under no obligation whatsoever to help them.

The demand from Israel is entirely reasonable. If the US expects Israel to wait for our lead in this, as Obama has asked them to, and if the US is asking Israel to postpone any actions until Iran crosses some line in the sand, then Israel has a right to know what that line is. The real issue here is that Obama wants to get elected and issues like Iran getting nukes or Syrian children dying in the streets have to take a back seat so Obama can win the elections. There is a segment of evangelical Christianity that believes a necessary precondition for end of times prophesy to come to pass is for there to be a hegemonic nation of Israel at war with it's neighbors. They also believe that somehow, if the US backs Israel against it's enemies then the US will be spared destruction during the second coming of Christ.
When an acquaintenance told me this in all seriousness one day, my jaw hit the deck. How could an otherwise seemingly well adjusted and gainfully employed adult in a first world country believe such nonsense? But I have heard it more than once since and this is apparently the driving force behind much of Israel's support in the US.

I thought this guy Panetta was a smart dude but he disappoints me. How can Iran sanctions be effective when our allies such as India is double dealing us over there? Backstabbing us.
