ISAF: US temporarily halts training of Afghan police over attacks

From Masoud Popalzai, CNN

U.S. Special Operations Forces has suspended the training of Afghan Local Police recruits while it double checks the background of the current police force following a rise in attacks against NATO troops by their Afghan counterparts, an official said Sunday.

The order follows reports that more than 40 NATO troops were killed this year by either members of the Afghan security forces or by insurgents disguised as an Afghan policeman or soldier.

"Current partnered operations have and will continue, even as we temporarily suspend training of about 1,000 new ALP recruits while revetting current members," said Col. Thomas Collins, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.

"While we have full trust and confidence in our Afghan partners, we believe this is a necessary step to validate our vetting process and ensure the quality indicative of Afghan Local Police."

U.S. Special Operations forces have been tasked with training Afghan Local Police as part of an effort to beef up Afghanistan's forces ahead of the American withdrawal.

"This is a temporary suspension," said Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Seddiqi.

He said the suspension has been discussed with the ministry, but that "we would like to see the coninuation of these training programs because they are very important."

"This temporary measure is only to review the vetting process and revet them. This suspension will not have any impact on the NATO/ISAF's overall training mission in Afghanistan."

It was not immediately clear when NATO suspended training, how long it would last or what effect, if any, it would have on the planned withdrawal.

Collins did not say whether the suspension extended beyond the training of local police.

The Washington Post, which first reported the story, said it also included Afghan special forces.

The newspaper, citing anonymous sources, also reported that it would take up to two months to complete the renewed vetting of the local police and the special forces.

An estimated 25% of the attacks by Afghan security forces against U.S. and other allied troops in Afghanistan are carried out by Taliban infiltrators, U.S. Marine Gen. John Allen, ISAF commander, said.

The Pentagon, however, has put the number at 10%.

The suspension of training comes days after three Australian soldiers were killed by an Afghan security force member. The deaths bring to 14 the number of NATO troops who have been killed in August alone in such "green-on-blue" attacks.

The term refers to a color coding system used by the military, in which blue refers to the friendly force, in this case NATO; and green refers, in this case, to Afghan security forces.

– CNN's Jessica King and Chelsea J. Carter contributed to this report.

With such "Dark Age" culture still in existence in India how can the world be healthy and the neighbors prosperous. India poses a grave danger to the world and its deities and leaders set a bad example. Mahatma Gandhi, a pedophile, needs to be exposed and tried posthumously for his child molestation crimes just like the Penn State crowd Sandusky et al. Gandhi's statutes need to be knocked down everywhere they have been put in USA. The hindu deities need to be shattered and trashed. Disgusting figurines of ugly and scary looking characters with demonic personalities. How can hindu children grow up mentally stable looking at such atrocious representations of evil in its most heinous form.

We now need to focus on India. The American invasion of Afghanistan brought to the forefront the irrelevance of India as a nation. With a population of over 1.2 billion people there was no value that this nation could bring to the table. Their soldiers (ragtag) 1.2 million continue hiding in the trenches scared from Talibans. A few teenage Talibans invaded the country and held it hostage for days on end showing how useless India is. It was embarrasing for the world to observe this humiliation of a nation that was being touted as a regional power.

A few teenage Talibans sneaked into the country not as an identifiable army but as terrorists dressed as civilians and as women at that!

If that is brave, then muslims have sunk to a new low on the cowardice meter.

That's an E-8 to you Ace.I have 14 Combat Deployments I have lost 16 men defending our US of A. THAT"S How much I love MY country. So you need to stop believing CNN. So take your little clown posse and keep calling Americans ingrates or I can point the way to your nearest recruitment center and you can sign up and come on over and do some real fighting instead of from your basement on mommy's computer Wait? Jo, the CNN News Network may not be as far to the right as Fox News Network but is still part of the right-wing news media trying to sugarcoat the NATO forces today while back in the 1980's it villified the Russians when they were in Afghanistan. The truth here is that the Russians were no more villainous then than the NATO forces are heroes now!!! The plain truth lies somewhere in between! Either way, Afghanistan belongs to the Afghans and nobody else!!!

To be perfectly Honest, They can keep this Mud Hut craphole but I still have a duty. That duty is to train these people so we can get the hell out. After 4 deployments here Don't you think I would like to go home one of these day's? Well your answer is yes I do! But there is still work to do. I am hoping in my last years (Less than 2 left) they will transfer me to some cushy recruiting job in my hometown. I have no doubt that will happen I am basically waiting for the orders to come through. Until they do I will continue to do what I have done for the last 28 years serve our country. 1st with the 101st Airborne Division and later with the 3rd and the 5th Special Forces

Why are you always looking for a pat on the back just for doing what you're paid to do? Not enough mindless hero worship in this country for you? Why do you write like a 15 year old boy? Not once have you fought for Americans (with the exception, of course, of your comrades in arms), but you have fought for corporations, banks and empire. If you truly are what you claim to be, then perhaps this country simply doesn't deserve your kind. As for believing CNN goes, it's barely a c-hair above Fox. All of the MSM suck.

Looking forward to your usual feisty retort.

I get enough pats on the back. I certainly don't need one from someone who sit's safely in their basement and talks about What we do like he knows something. Here's another thing Ace, The pay ain't all that. Luckily when I retire I will be in the service of a private contractor. Instead of running your mouth like the snotnosed kid you are why don't you take a trip down to your local recruitment center and join up? You know why you don't? From your retoric I have deducted your nothing but a mouth with a body attached. You don't have the balls to actually do anything but talk. Which is fine. The reason I have the time to comment on here is I am an 18-z w-2 That to you Ace is a Special Forces Operations Sergeant with the Spec Op's sniper Training I Don't really have to go out on Patrol anymore. The funny thing is your so insignificant that no-one really cares what you say. If you really want to make a difference close your mouth go down and sign up like real men and women do.

Get out of Afghanistan, and get out NOW! Viet Nam flourished once we left! These people have to do their own "nation buliding". Karzai and the USA will never solve their problems. (Not sure either really wants to!).

How can we possibly "train" Karzai's people when Karzai only cares about the heroin trade his relatives are deeply invoved in? Every time I see a photo of Karzai, he looks richer and happier! Why not? The US pays for his good life.

    Bimbo the Birthday Clown
They need to make this a very permanent proposition as we need to get both the Karzai regime and the Taliban together to work out a peace plan and then vacate that country once and for all. Failing that, let's just let our useless NATO allies take over and sort it out if these gutless wonders care to do so! The current European leaders seem to have lost their self respect and national pride as all they can do is to take orders from Washington D.C. This is a very sad developement indeed!..................... God this guy is such an misinformed TURD. He believes all this Crap he reads on CNN. Then comes up with these stupid things to add. Let's get the Taliban and The Afghan government together for a little Tea Party. Bimbo you are truly an idiot. Let's just send out flyers for the Taliban to come into the open for a meeting. Oh yea that will work. If we could get them to stop hiding behind their woman and children that they have suicide bombed and raped and murdered. and thrown acid into the faces of little girls for going to school and poisoning the wells of schools for girls killing little girls for going to school Let's give em a call and see if they will have a meeting with us and the Afghan Government. That could work though? We could get them out of hiding, and can you spell DRONE? aND WHAT'S WITH THAT STUPID NAME? idiot.

I have been over here for 5 Deployment's now. Whilst you sit in your comfortable basement eating frosted mini wheat's and commenting on something you read, that you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about. All you know is what you read. It's irritating, that you try to make calls about what we do over here, and how do you expect people to take you seriously with a Moniker like that? I just got the new's this morning that we will not be on training Missions with the indigenous forces for at least 4 weeks. Now I can comment on that because I am HERE. Go back to your model building because you know nothing about this. And your Mother is calling you for breakfast you better go upstairs.

Judaism is a noble religion and this is an article that readers will find interesting that once more exposes the myths used by Israel-Firsters to the light of day. It is written by Israeli Josh Mintz and was published in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz:

Were Jews ever really slaves in Egypt, or is Passover a myth?
Where is the real proof – archeological evidence, state records and primary sources?

Here's a question for you: what do actor Charlton Heston, DreamWorks animation studios and Former Prime Minister Menachem Begin all have in common?

Well, they've all, at one time or another, perpetuated the myth that the Jews built the pyramids. And it is a myth, make no mistake.

Even if we take the earliest possible date for Jewish slavery that the Bible suggests, the Jews were enslaved in Egypt a good three hundred years after the 1750 B.C. completion date of the pyramids. That is, of course, if they were ever slaves in Egypt at all.

We are so quick to point out the obvious lies about Jews and Israel that come out in Egypt – the Sinai Governors claims that the Mossad released a shark into the Red Sea to kill Egyptians, or, as I once read in a newspaper whilst on holiday in Cairo, the tale of the magnetic belt buckles that Jews were selling cheap in Egypt that would sterilize men on contact – yet we so rarely examine our own misconceptions about the nature of our history with the Egyptian nation.

We tend, in the midst of our disdain for Egyptian, anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, to overlook the fact that one of the biggest events of the Jewish calendar is predicated upon reminding the next generation every year of how the Egyptians were our cruel slave-masters, in a bondage that likely never happened. Is this really so different from Jaws the Mossad agent?

The reality is that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Jews were ever enslaved in Egypt. Yes, there's the story contained within the bible itself, but that's not a remotely historically admissible source.

I'm talking about real proof; archeological evidence, state records and primary sources. Of these, nothing exists.

It is hard to believe that 600,000 families (which would mean about two million people) crossed the entire Sinai without leaving one shard of pottery (the archeologist's best friend) with Hebrew writing on it.

It is remarkable that Egyptian records make no mention of the sudden migration of what would have been nearly a quarter of their population, nor has any evidence been found for any of the expected effects of such an exodus; such as economic downturn or labor shortages.

Furthermore, there is no evidence in Israel that shows a sudden influx of people from another culture at that time.

No rapid departure from traditional pottery has been seen, no record or story of a surge in population. In fact, there's absolutely no more evidence to suggest that the story is true than there is in support of any of the Arab world's conspiracy theories and tall tales about Jews.

So, as we come to Passover 2012 when, thanks to the “Arab Spring,” our relations with Egypt are at a nearly 40 year low, let us enjoy our Seder and read the story by all means, but also remind those at the table who may forget that it is just a metaphor, and that there is no ancient animosity between Israelites and Egyptians.

Because, if we want to re-establish that elusive peace with Egypt that so many worked so hard to build, we're all going to have to let go of our prejudices.

Josh Mintz is completing his degree in International Relations and Middle Eastern studies and is the communications director t Friend A Soldier, an NGO that encourages dialogue with IDF soldiers
