The new book by former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, published under the pseudonym Mark Owen, has some eye-opening, sometimes amusing details about the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.
"No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden" goes step by step through the SEAL team's training and practicing for the attack, the assault itself and the aftermath.
One might find it odd that in the midst of one of the most important Special Operations missions ever, most of these elite warriors weren't exactly pumped up on the flight to bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
"I think most of the guys on the helicopter actually caught some much-needed sleep on the ride in. ... All the hype was gone and it was just another night at work for us."
But that sleepy helicopter ride quickly turned bad.
"Suddenly, the helicopter kicked to the right 90 degrees and I could feel my stomach drop like riding a roller-coaster. The rotors above me screamed as the Black Hawk tried to claw its way back into the air. With each second, the helicopter slipped closer toward the earth."
The helicopter crash-landed in the bin Laden compound but the tail rotor hung over the wall outside the compound. No one on the helicopter was hurt and they quickly got to work on the main mission.
Obviously the killing of bin Laden is what is drawing the most attention to the book. Bissonnette wrote about his concerns that bin Laden would put up a fight.
""Roughly 15 minutes had passed and bin Laden had plenty of time to strap on a suicide vest or simply get his gun."
Bin Laden was not wearing a vest when he died. His two guns, according to Bissonnette, were on a shelf in his bedroom, apparently untouched.
After the helicopter crash and a hard fight to get through the compound's defenses, Bissonnette and several other SEALS were near the top floor of the compound, where intelligence predicted Osama bin Laden would be.
"We were less than five steps from getting to the top when I heard suppressed shots.
"BOP. BOP.
"The point man had seen a man peeking out of the door on the right side of the hallway about 10 feet in front of him. I couldn't tell from my position if the rounds hit the target or not. The man disappeared into the dark room."
The man who peeked out the door had been shot, but was still moving when the SEALs entered the room. Bissonnette described the end.
"In his death throes, he was still twitching and convulsing. Another assaulter and I trained our lasers on his chest and fired several rounds. The bullets tore into him, slamming his body into the floor until he was motionless."
But there was still the question of whom they had killed. One of Bissonnette's roles was photographing the body.
"It was strange to see such an infamous face up close. Lying in front of me was the reason we had been fighting for the last decade. It was surreal trying to clean blood off the most wanted man in the world so that I could shoot his photo. I had to focus on the mission, right now we needed some good quality photos."
One of his fellow SEALs, a self-taught Arabic speaker he called Will, tried another way to confirm the dead man's identity. (Bissonnette used only false first names for the team members.)
"Will knelt down and asked the girls, 'Who is the man?'
The girl didn't know to lie.
'Osama bin Laden.'
Will smiled.
'Are you sure that is Osama bin Laden?'
'Yes,' the girl said."
Jay, one of the team's leaders, came into the room, looked at the body and heard that the girl and, later, one of the wives, had said it was bin Laden.
He stepped outside and used a satellite phone to call Adm. William McRaven, the Navy officer overseeing the mission.
"'For God and country, I pass Geronimo,' Jay said. Geronimo E.K.I.A.' "
That was code for telling McRaven the team had killed Osama bin Laden.
Later, after they returned to Afghanistan, Bissonnette sought out the pilot of the helicopter that crashed. It was a man he called Teddy.
"I intercepted him as he walked into the hangar and gave him a crush bear hug," Bissonnette wrote. "I know for a fact he kept the mission on track by ditching the way he did. Everybody focused on who pulled the trigger. One wrong move and we all would have been in a pile of debris in the courtyard. Teddy saved all our lives."
After he finally returned home with his fellow SEALs, Bissonnette and the rest of the team were called into a meeting with Jay, their leader.
"There was concern at the command level about all the leaks revolving around the raid.
'It is imperative that we stay out of the media,' Jay said. 'Let's all make sure we're keeping a low profile.' "

His policies will have a direct impact on children yet born, including minority children (which are targeted by Planned Parenthood, BTW). Just because someone is concerned about such policies does not mean they are implicitly racisit.I got very weary of being covertly labeled a racisit by media, friends and African Americans beacause I did not support Obama politically.Just as we have an obligation to teach our children about racism we also have an obligation to teach them not to label everything as racisim. One can absolutely dissagree on moral and political issues that have nothing to do with a candidates skin color and everything to do with their character.
The Navy Seal Team executed the mission the way they were trained to and they did it to the best of their ability. This nation own them and well as everyone who has contributed to thisigreat event as well as everyone who came before them, clearing the way and learning from our past failures like Desert One. Our greatest enemies are irresponsible news med0ai and our irresponsible politicians. As soon as the White House and NSA started makeing the rounds giving interviews and briefing about the mission they (White House and NSA) in fact declassified this by putting the details in the public domain. Even though I agree with you, IF you are, indeed, a Colonel in the DoD you should have gotten someone to proofread your post. For a colonel in the DoD should be better educated and be able to post comments with better grammar etc. I think the Seal Team did a superb job and should be commended for it. Maybe killing OBL was the right thing to do, however, a lot of people are curious as to what he would have had to say in court. But, oh well, now he isn't costing tax payers any money being housed in a military prison. I hope the fishes are feeding on his carcass.

For 15 mins there were unidentified helicopters about less than a mile away and then there was gunfire and still no response from the Pakistani Military Base. The guy who tweeted heard and saw the entire thing and the military base did not notice. Either some Pakistani senior commanding general was paid to look the other way, or the Pakistan Military is even worse of than some Sub Saharan drugged up child militia in Africa. they were there for 30 Mins. Std military response times around the world by Quick Reaction Teams(QRT or QRF) is two minutes. and they are about a truck load of troops armed with atleast one mounted machine gun, which could do major damage to helicopters.
You'd better believe Pakistan knew all about it.

I doubt this administration wants this book published for political purposes. For one thing, stating that Bin Ladin was unarmed is not really a good thing. It was better for us to believe he was armed and ready to kill when he was shot.

But in case you are unaware of how the military works, Seals, Special Forces, Marine Recon, heck even a private who works in the galley, cannot go anywhere or do any of their missions in other countries without direction from the President.

As stated in this book "Bin Laden was not wearing a vest he was not armed, would justice not have been served better by giving this person a public trial. Proving to all that he did all the things he was said to have done. Instead they killed him in cold blood (murdered him). I have another curious observation when they killed Hussein and his sons there were photos all over the internet proving they were dead no one cared that they were muslim or worried about their religion. Why not show pictures of this man dead as well to prove that this actually happened. They could have still buried this man at sea after the fact.

Apparently the author has penned information about the SEAL training and the mission which every military in the world will review in detail, including our enemies. This case will set a precedence for future self serving public servants who would want to leak information in the books they pen. Why should it be a court-marshalable offense for a citizen of the USA (Mr. Owens) to tell people what and how this historic event went down, especially when he witnessed the event? In a nutshell: the American military is a cornerstone of American and Global stability and economic health and the Democrats are anti military but try to take credit of the military's success for political gain.

Liberal ignorance of the character and value of combat service is a serious problem in this country and liberals seem to dominate academia which is a gateway to success in the country. Personally, I believe in equality and gay marriage and am pro choice, but I also know that our military provides global stability that is a primary reason for our nation's high standard of living as well as being necessary for Global Stability. Please read on what happened after the fall of the Roman Empire to understand the historical importance of military dominance to prosperity and stability. My largest consternation is what our public cannot know due to the ways, means and divulgeance of CONOPS. This always bothered me but I understand the National Security reasons that guide us. I also believe the SEAL who wrote the book should have gone through the "vetting" process before releasing to a publisher. In my times, that would be treasonous ... that being stated, we appear to have set a new paradigm at the Chief Executive/Cabinet levels on releasing information. I don't believe in socialism ... I also don't believe in letting our nation go the way of Rome. Quite the conundrum!

We in Pakistan and Afghanistan always considered OBL as US guy on mission to pave the way for Americans to occupy Afghanistan which he did successfully and today America has occupied Afghanistan. Now his role in the drama was over and Americans needed a turn which they thought will help in getting out of the Afghan quagmire otherwise what was the point in not showing the world video of of the whole operation as after all he was America's most wanted man, killing thousands of Americans on American soil. What we say now He has safely been removed and enjoy luxuries some where in America as reward for his role in the drama occupation of Afghanistan.

That's Russia's sphere of influence. It took over a century to develop the resources of the American West alone. We have plenty of resources to develop in Canada and S. America with friendlier governments. Anything Afghanistan has will take decades or centuries to develop given its lack of infrastructure and illiterate workforce and trillions of dollars. How is this a good investment to take such an awful backwards nation? Of course its because he's black. It couldn't be because he took way more credit than due for something that he ordered, but had not part in planning or executing. He said "yes" to other people's work. The operators and their command planned and trained for this mission. The operators and support deployed prior to Obama even getting word of the mission. Obama did not get briefed until after the team was already on the ground in A-stan. The intelligence network that exposed Osama's position began almost a decade prior to Obama's order. This was a much more involved and larger operation than you give it credit for. It was not like Obama got intel and told the military to plan, train, deploy and execute. He told them that they could "go" after they had already done months worth of work AFTER confirmed intelligence. But of course...because Obama is black he deserves all the credit.
How about dropping the race card and looking at something for what it is? That would make more sense and be much less devisive. I am a fervent Democrat and I am shocked by this campaign by Obama and his cronies.....it is embarrassing....not because he is black.....but because I find his actions and the actions of his campaign to be reprehensible and not of my expectation of the president.....but you would probably call me racist because I don't like his campaign or his taking as much credit as he has for all the work done by people I know in the JSOC World.
@ Mao – I dont think their is issue as to what is involved and what work JSOC as well as conventional units or just the military in general has done. Obama was the shot caller for the GO/NOGO on the mission. Obama is responsible for appointing the right people in the right positions at the top to do the job. I dont think anyone expects any President to be gathering intell or researching medical costs for medicare, their is staff for that whom present the findings.
As for his campaign, I dont know whats different from his campaign than any other, honestly. I'm moderate so I'm neither party.

Obama did not appoint anyone who was in the initial stages of the planing or gathering. Futhermore, he had not appointed anyone who would have been involved with any aspect of this mission until the information had already left the DOD on its way to the White House. He literally just got the information from his advisors, who had been provided it from sources that he did not appoint and then he made the decision. It was a gutsy decision.....but he did not have anything to do with any aspect of this operation and the preceding operations until a few days prior to execution of the mission. The intel gathering and surveillance started well before Obama was in office.
You can't claim it was his staff either. He does not appoint anyone in the military at the levels that this took place.

I'm a pretty conservative guy, not an Obama supporter, and I still think this "author" guy is an embarrassment. These guys have a code of honor. Silence about their missions is part of it. As the article points out (even CNN, like a stopped clock, is right once in a while), they count on their team members to be silent. The minute they start undertaking missions with an eye toward how they can profit from them, or wondering how they will look in a book another team member might write, is the minute their performance level goes down. My bet is this guy is shunned by his team.
