Pentagon: Iran improving its missile capabilities

By Mike Mount

Iran is steadily improving its missile capability and could be able to test a missile that could reach the U.S. shores within three years, according to a new Pentagon report assessing the status of the Iranian military.

"Iran has boosted the lethality and effectiveness of existing systems with accuracy improvements and new submuntion payloads," which allows missiles to drop explosives over a wider area causing more destruction, according to the report.

RECOMMENDED: Pentagon: Iran missiles more accurate

The missiles were part of war game exercises conducted by Iran last week. Iran's government said it was testing missiles capable of hitting U.S. bases around the Middle East.

"During the war games, long-range, medium-range and short-range missiles will be used and will be fired from different points across the country," which an Iranian spokesman said was designed to test the precision and efficiency of the warhead and missile systems.

The Pentagon report was created in April, ahead of the most recent Iranian war games, so intelligence from those exercises was not included in the report. Additionally, U.S officials could not confirm the accuracy of the Iranian statements about the latest exercises.

The latest report did cite Iranian war games held in 2011 in which Iran launched several missiles, "including a multiple missile salvo."

The 2012 report was signed by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and sent to defense committees on Capitol Hill last week. It said regular ballistic missile training continues throughout the country and continues to develop missiles that can hit Israel and Eastern Europe, including an extended-range Shahab-3 and a medium-range ballistic missile, called the Ashura, that can fly more than 1,200 miles.

The report repeats what has been stated publicly by the United States, that over the last 20 years Iran has "placed significant emphasis on developing and fielding ballistic missiles," that could threaten the United States, coalition and partner countries around the Middle East and to project power in the region.

The report also maintains that Iran is still capable of testing a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile by 2015, "with sufficient foreign assistance."

The United States and NATO have begun to field an anti-ballistic missile shield in the southern and eastern parts of Europe to protect from such a threat.

But weapons analyst John Pike said the missile shield is not fully operational.

"You know 2015 is very soon. Certainly if you believe the 2015 forecast, Iran would have that ballistic missile before the United States has a defense against it," Pike, weapons expert at GlobalSecurity.org, said on Wednesday.

Regarding Iran's continued desire to develop a nuclear weapon, the report reiterated already released information and positions the United States has held, but tied Iran's nuclear desires to Iran's ballistic missile ambition under the topic "Iranian Capabilities related to Nuclear and Missile Forces." That emphasized the over-arching threat the United States sees: Iran ultimately putting a nuclear weapon on an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Iran has also claimed to have deployed anti-ship, short-range ballistic missiles that can identify and maneuver toward ships as they fly, according to the report. After Iran's continued saber-rattling and the country's threats to close the Straight of Hormuz, the United States moved a floating base for naval special forces into the Arabian Gulf, as well as four anti-mine ships.

  2. arabs and palestinians should be thankful that israel is as MERCIFUL as it is and has been

Lets see....gaza given back to the pals in 2005...what does hamas do? use it to lob more missiles into civilian populations, which even the UN called a human rights violation. Gaza was formerly owned by the egyptians, but you didnt see the pals lobbing missiles into egypt..why not? no jews there...

if mexico was lobbing missiles into arizona, I am quite sure america would be far less patient than israel has been. If mexico were firing missiles into san francisco, liberals would BEG the govt to respond.

the west bank was formerly owned by jordan....was there an intifada against jordan? nope. no jews there. prior to 1967, did the pals want independance from jordan and egypt? nope...not a word. no jews there...

fact- the PLO, a terrorist liberation group, was established in 1964, 3 yrs PRIOR to their being any so called occupied territories. Can anyone tell me what they were established to liberate in 1964? Israel was sovereign and officially recognized by the UN before 1967....so why were the arabs massing armies on israels borders in 1967?? the answer is simple; this is not about settlements as it has now been fashionably portrayed....its about 1948 and that is why israelis know better than you jew haters who just cant ever speak the truth.

If the pals want a state, they have to sit down to negotiate it. They will beg for it if they are smart...obama tried to shoehorn in a bad deal by seeming to pick a fight with netanyahu so that the arabs would be nicer to america...didnt work. all the arabs did was use obama hoping he would throw israel to the wolves...and he may yet try if given a 2nd term. The man in his heart, is anti american, anti israel.

    Muslims, beware!

The idea of Israelis (and hence US) is to create more divide between Sunni and Shia so that the Israelis (Jews) can create more havoc and get their way. As the common Roman adage goes "Divide and rule".
The Imperialist British did the same in India. They created a major rift between Muslims and Hindus there.
Sunni, Shia, do not fall for that trap.

"Admiral Cosgriff’s caution was well founded: within a week, the Pentagon acknowledged that it could not positively identify the Iranian boats as the source of the ominous radio transmission, and press reports suggested that it had instead come from a prankster long known for sending fake messages in the region. Nonetheless, Cosgriff’s demeanor angered Cheney, according to the former senior intelligence official. But a lesson was learned in the incident: The public had supported the idea of retaliation, and was even asking why the U.S. didn’t do more. The former official said that, a few weeks later, a meeting took place in the Vice-President’s office. “The subject was how to create a casus belli between Tehran and Washington,” he said."

The Israeli military and intelligence brass started releasing, a while ago, reports and statements in an effort to keep the Israeli politicians from ramping up the Israeli population with anti-Iranian propaganda to the point where the politicians would have to give the military the order to attack Iran, even though the military was telling them it was an attack that could go down in history as another example of self-destructive self-delusion. It seems the US military and intelligence brass are now doing the same thing, for the same reason.

Just some real facts about the US-Iran. 1920's England takes over Iranian oil. 1941 England says Iranians getting too chummy with Nazi's, invades Iran. Both USA and Britain occupy Iran in WW2. 1953 After Iran nationalizes oil, USA launches operation Ajax, a coup to overthrow the democratically elected government of Iran. USA places shah into power. 1979 Iranian people overthrow shah, this upsets the USA. 1980 Saddam Hussein attacks Iran. After Iran starts winning the USA provides Saddam with weapons, intel, and strategy. 1980's to present, USA imposes sanctions on Iran. Iran is short of technology, infrastructure, medicine, and has a third world army. After all that no wonder they want nukes.

  12. Doesn't matter

The simple fact of the matter is that the United States will go to war with Iran in the future. We know this and they know this. We will most likely go to war before we believe they have the ability to mount a significant counter offensive, nuclear or otherwise. The only reason the United States hasn't already attacked Iran is because of Iran's ties to China and Russia. This is the same scenario that took place during the Vietnam and Korean wars, with the exception that this time it is primarily China that has caused hesitation and not so much Russia. China's backing also seems to be the reason that Ahmadinejad is so bold with his rhetoric towards the west. The Middle East is simply the new battlefield in an ongoing show of dominance between the superpowers. Be that as it may, none of the superpowers want a nuclear war as no one wants to rule over a desolate wasteland. Most likely Iran will be blown back into the 18th century, which is a travesty since it's inhabitants seem to be quite progressive, educated, and civilized. It is the duty of each country's citizens to prevent this type of chess game from occurring, but we have all failed miserably. We allow the media and our political and spiritual leaders to misdirect us in a manner similar to a magicians trick. We watch the moving hand, oblivious to the true intent and actions of the magician. After the trick is completed we speculate how it occurred in the first place, yet the only person who truly knows is the magician himself. We are all an ignorant audience who will continue to pay the price in blood or money. We hate each other for no logical reason and will continue to march along like lemmings. All empires have played this game and will continue to do so long after these empires have past. History repeats itself, at least the history of man does.

    2. 2001: George Bush and the British claim Irag has nukes and uses that lie to attack Irag.

What does the type of government a country has have to do with its military capabilities? Israel is the biggest threat to world peace there is. Iran and any other country that chooses to should have the right to arm themselves as long as other countries who pose a threat to them are armed. What hypocrisy from the U.S., Israel and others who have had nukes for years to complain about Iran. Are nukes reserved only for countries run by White people?

Israel is democracy if definition of democracy be killing women and children, torture innocent people, bury people alive, occupy other nations' lands and demolish people's house while they are living and have lived there for centuries, force people to leave their homes and migrate them. and at the end call "Terrorist" those people who are resisting against Israelis' ambitious while train, support by all the means terrorists groups like Wahabbi Al-qaeda. Have you ever heard Al-qaeda attacked Israelis? I don't talk about empty rhetoric I am talking about real attack like what they are doing daily in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan and they did in 911?

Why would Iranian leader allow their people to suffer the hardships of all these sanctions unless they had something to hide? The West has already offered to provide them with radioactive isotopes for medical purposes if they agreed to give up their 20% enriched uranium. Now they say that they want to use the Uranium for nuclear submarines. Why should these religious dictators possess these types of capabilities? They do not appeal to reason or logic, but instead to religious mandates. I can't think of anything more unstable or uncertain than that...

You did well in geography? So, that means you are aware that the names of countries, bodies of water, etc are quite often changed depending on the current geopolitical trends? Like, for example, that body of water that used to be called the "persian gulf" up until the 1960's? Yeah that's right about when pretty much every other country (except Iran) in that region started referring to it as the "arabian gulf". I suppose it's possible you're either an Iranian or just an old fart who took geography back in the 50's and hasn't kept up with current affairs, but I doubt it.

That sounds about right for Iran's tech level. But if their missile takes 3 years to reach U.S. shores, we should have plenty of time to evade it. Or it could just be CNN's god-awful grammar again.

I'm not sure why anyone thinks the U.S. should be allowed nuclear weapons, let alone be considered the voice of reason when they are the only country that has been irresponsible enough to use them on civilians, especially against a country that had already offered to surrender under the same conditions that the U.S. eventually allowed.

Any American with half a brain knows that Iran is no direct threat to us. Even if Iran magically came upon a functioning ICBM, there is no possible way that it would ever connect with U.S. soil. The early warning systems of the European nations we are allied with alone would pick up on the missile before it even hit the Eastern edge of the Atlantic. As far as Iran firing a 600-mile range missile from a ship, it would never get anywhere near close enough to ur borders. As far our country needing another war, we actually will in the next few years. Our military runs around our defense contractors that supply the U.S. Armed Forces with everything from weapons, vehicles, aircraft, etc. When the government stops purchasing all of these various types of defenses, the contractors would start dealing with other countries once their current contracts expired. That's not conspiracy theory, it's basic business sense. When a country does not have wars, weapon production drops because new products aren't needed, and let's face it, this country is all about military. It's a bit of a shame really, but oh well, such is life.

Samson and Brendan... Back in 1939 Germany was not a direct threat to the US. It WAS a threat to Poland, France, Britain and other countries. In 1939 Germany started a war threatening the entire world (and ultimately even the US).

Now please come back to 2012. Iran is not a direct threat to the United States yet. It IS a threat to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Europe. Iran is developing nuclear weapons and if it is allowed to succeed it will start a NUCLEAR war compared to which the WWII would look like a child's play.

        Did you get it now?

It's all Ad Hominem until a bomb is tested or used. Iran's lack of transparency, and its history leads to justifiably assuming the worst. Either they are putting up with all these sanctions for absolutely NO REASON, or what is more likely is that they are stalling again to finally achieve a nuclear weapon.

Are you suggesting that George Washington would not approve of the US being the policeman of the world? Are you suggesting that if I go throw dog poop on my neighbor lawn that he will not be upset and what to put dog poop on my lawn? I have yet to hear a story where God saved the Jews. Out of 5,000 years, that area was ruled by Israelites for about 500 yrs, just 10% of the time. Only 100 yrs after King David, they suffered drought so severe they had to beg Egypt for a place to live. Interesting list of genetic misfits you have there.

I would go further: indisious, targeted misinformation designed to keep the concept of war with Iran on the front page of CNN every day. After Iraq and Afghanistan is is absolutely unconscionable, esecially since our own intelligence services and even Israel have stated that IRAN DOES NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPONS PROGRAM.

The Persian Gulf has been called the Persian Gulf for thousands of years – even on maps carved into the walls of ancient Rome it still says 'Persian Gulf.' As soon as someone doesn't know the name of the 'Persian Gulf' you can determine three things: (1) They're illiterate, (2) They're a biased / a paid off stooge, or (3) all of the above.

Rivalry between Iran and some Arab states, along with the emergence of pan-Arabism and Arab nationalism, has seen the name Arabian Gulf become predominant in some Arab countries."

The American taxpayer has armed Israel to ther teeth to the tune of over 130bn dollars. Let the Israelis fight their own war FOR ONCE. You are pathetic, and you shame the memory of the Holocaust and turn the accusation of anti-Semitism into the Boy Who Cried Wolf. There is no chance of Iran launching a missile, either a nuclear armed missile or a conventional missile.

The purpose of Iran's weapons programs is not to militarily challenge the United States or Israel - neither of those goals is feasible - but instead to gain influence in the region by symbolizing opposition to the west and at the same time demand the attention of the United Nations in hopes to better its position in the world.

    War Is A Racket

A speech delivered in 1933, by Major General Smedley Butler, USMC.

    Smedley Butler

WAR is a racket. It always has been

It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives.

A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small "inside" group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes.

In the World War [I] a mere handful garnered the profits of the conflict. At least 21,000 new millionaires and billionaires were made in the United States during the World War. That many admitted their huge blood gains in their income tax returns. How many other war millionaires falsified their tax returns no one knows.

How many of these war millionaires shouldered a rifle? How many of them dug a trench? How many of them knew what it meant to go hungry in a rat-infested dug-out? How many of them spent sleepless, frightened nights, ducking shells and shrapnel and machine gun bullets? How many of them parried a bayonet thrust of an enemy? How many of them were wounded or killed in battle?

Out of war nations acquire additional territory, if they are victorious. They just take it. This newly acquired territory promptly is exploited by the few – the selfsame few who wrung dollars out of blood in the war. The general public shoulders the bill.

When I was in the Navy and we were in the Persian Gulf they told us we needed to call it the Arabian Gulf because the people in Dubai and others were very sensitive about it.

Oh I see, and iif they get sensetive about calling the Indian Ocean Arab ocean we should agree with that as well?!! because Arabs buy our rusty weapons, give us cheap oil and let us use their land as military base right?

Israel does not have strategic bombers, aircraft carriers and millions of troops. This means that the options to "handle this" for Israel are rather limited. You may consider that a nuclear war in the Middle East will probably make the largest oil field on Earth unusable for many centuries, will result in millions of killed and wounded and will cause hundreds of millions of refugees. All this will throw the world into a crisis of epic proportions effectively ending the Western civilization as we know it. Do you still believe that it is Israel who should "handle this" single handily?

Those that did not listen, I don't feel bad for you. I am being told to ignore the danger to the countess Israeli and U.S. lives for people who should have gotten a college education and didn't.

Mike Mount needs to review the geography of the middle east to use the correct name "Persian Gulf" in his report. It has been Persian Gulf and will always be Persian Gulf.

I would not be so sure about it. If Iran will continue its current policy of developing nuclear weapons while threatening to "erase" other states from the map then sooner rather than later the Persian state will cease to exist and the neighboring Arab countries will be more than happy to give the Persian Gulf its alternative (and way more relevant in such case) name.

A... The reason Israel did not pulverize Lebanon is the high number of civilian casualties involved. Such considerations will not be relevant in case Israel will have to fight for its survival against a country which is EIGHTY TIMES larger than Israel, has TEN TIMES greater population and is located thousands of miles away.

A nuclear Threat from Iran can no longer be prevented since when Iran is not allowing a few sites like Parchin&Fordow etc to be examined by IAEA and moreover they have more than15 nuclear sites some of them deep inside mountains. It is obvious that THEY are cladenstinely developing nuclear bombs which can no longer be prevented.Only a nuclear strike in future can be preempted by devising strategies which preempted a Pakistan nuclear strike on India in 1999during the Kargill conflict between India&Pakistan(This has been corroborated by the definitive hints in NAWAB Sharif's-where he quotes then Pakistan Army Chief Musharaff of having plotted to drop the ATOM BOMB over India and Bill Clinton's Biographical books)&2001 as well as N Korean one over S Korea in 2010 during the USA-SKorean war exercises. For details please see my Facebook notes etc since these cannot be described here due to lengthy details.IN THE 1999 ATOM BOMBING PLOT AN INTELLIGENCE MANOEUVRE WAS DONE BY PROGRAMMING THAT INDIA WILL RETALIATE WITH THE EVER MORE POWERFUL HYDROGEN BOMB DUE TO WHICH REASONS THEN PAKISTAN PM NAWAB SHARIF RUSHED TO WASHINGTON TO PLEAD WITH USA PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON TO SOMEHOW STOP THE CONFLICT FROM ESCALATING AND ALL THIS EVEN BEFORE A FULL FLEDGED WAR WAS YET TO START WHICH MADE NATIONS AND LEADERS WONDERING.Now If Israel wants to save itself then both Israel and the world including India will have to shed the shameless hypocrisy which is afflicting arrogant world leaders and countries and media alike which is the. Root cause of the Nuclear,Cyber&Economic warfare looming larger the world.Of course every country has a right to have nuclear weapons just as much as every person has the right to have licensed weapons for his self defence but which in fact will cause anarchy and certainly the world is moving towards international anarchy

Article mentions the Arabian Gulf in the last paragraph , so where is the Arabian Gulf ? , because last time I checked Iran was located on the Persian Gulf.

Although this issue may seem silly to other readers, it clearly shows the psychological warfare aimed at Iran among other things that force its fragile leadership to "saber rattle".

U.S. policy/psychological war feeds radicals in Iran(and other places ) & unfortunately pushes mainstream & moderate Iranian politicians out of the political scene by playing local prejudices, manipulating history, geographical facts.

Iran today is the result of populist/radical leaders like Ahmadinejad, who are actually the equal & opposite reaction to Bush era "saber rattling" and axis of evil policies.

During the Clinton era , although still under U.S. sanctions, Iran was gradually improving its relationship with the U.S., Iranians even elected Khatamei who was considered extremely reformist in the 1990's by anyone’s standards across the Middle East.

These dirty tactics by the West have made the Nuclear Issue a matter of National Pride & Prestige Iranian regime, whether Theocratic today or Democratic tomorrow will still have or pursue nuclear, ballistic, space or any other high technology.

Let me understand... You're telling us that "populist/radical leaders like Ahmadinejad" are result of "dirty tactics by the West"? That the Iranian PEOPLE are SO DUMB that they vote for a racist like Ahmadinejad because of the West? If so WHAT caused the Iranians to chose Khomeini as their leader 40-something years ago, in your opinion?

It is pretty stupid to blame others for the results of your own choices. The people of Iran chose Khomeini and his successors and the people of Iran will have to pay for the consequences. Iranian leaders offered the West a choice: to deal with Iran pursuing nuclear weapons today or to deal with Iran HAVING nuclear weapons tomorrow. This choice is pretty obvious...

First of all it has nothing to do with intelligence, an entire people cannot be "dumb" or smart.

However, since Iran's political system is not Democratic, its upper leadership helps (guardian console) supports politicians based on maintaining the “status quo”, and threats to the regime.

If there are no threats to the regime, than overtime people are able to gradually push reformists & reform policies through, and the gradual result is a country that starts to go towards normalization/democratization, which means the conservatives in power gradually loose power until it’s too late, and they just go away with the help of some catalyst (like the Arab spring ), that’s how revolutions happen.

Great examples are Tunisia, Lybia, and Egypt , the upper leadership just lost power by giving into some reforms. Other regimes the refuse fundamental change are Syria, and China, North Korea, they make no concessions.

But since any superpower yields a lot of "power" and since its "foreign policy" is obviously pointed at "foreign countries" , than threating a reforming country makes the country radicalize again, just like Ahmadinejad's reckless comments against Israel have pushed Israeli war hawks into power, the same applies to Bush era policies & comments towards Iran.

Ahmadinejad is the Iranian equivalent of Rick Santorum, just because about 20% of the people supported Santorum who’s policies were considered on the right to almost extreme right, doesn’t make American's "dumb".

However, due to the fact that the U.S. is a mature democracy, extreme right or left candidates do not become Presidents or decision makers, the government can’t/does not force candidates on people based on "internal or geopolitical forces", consequently Iran is different.

      • Thinker23

Ari... As you've (hopefully) noticed the idea of an "entire" population being dumb or, alternatively, smart was brought by YOU and it's YOU who is responsible for it. Further, as you may be aware, some of us are very smart and some us very dumb while the rest of us lay in between. This means that the Iranian or any other population has a DISTRIBUTION of it's intellectual abilities and it's the statistical parameters of this distribution that allow us to compare the entire population of one society against other societies. Further, Iran is among the most democratic countries in the Muslim world. It has regular elections, there are several political parties and candidates from these parties run for office against each other.

You would be wrong in that assessment. An attack of that scale would lead to ww3. The entire region, at the very least, would be full of radiation and become uninhabitable. 40% of the worlds current oil supply would become inaccessible through various means. Hundreds of millions wounded, dead, and displaced, and Jerusalem will glow more brightly than the Star of David.

People need to understand what a nuclear bomb is. And what using one means. Call of duty and battlefield 3 don't give you any insight into war.

Thinker 23, I think Socius meant that you underestimated the potential loss of life – he stated "hundreds of millions", as in full-scale ww3....whereas you stated "millions". Given that there are over 300 Million people in the US, and a state like Connecticut (for example) has over 3 Million people, you can see that there's a large gap between millions and hundreds of millions.
