The United States says it is tracking a Russian military cargo ship as it makes its way to Syria carrying weapons, ammunition and a small number of Russian troops.
U.S. intelligence believes the Russians are sending the ship to help fortify its naval base in Syria as the situation in country continues to spiral out of control, Pentagon officials told CNN Friday.
The presence of the ship was first reporting by NBC News.
Classified U.S. imagery shows the ship, called the Nikolay Filchenkov, began loading in the port of Sevastapol on the Black Sea on June 7 and is headed for the Syrian port of Tartus, where the Russians have a naval facility. The port is vital for Russian naval access to the entire Middle East.
Under maritime rules, Russia should declare what the ship is carrying when it enters the Mediterranean, U.S. officials said.
The sources could not say how many troops are on board, though it is not believed to be a large number. In addition, the officials said, it is not clear if the troops are only to help secure and transport the weapons and equipment or if they will stay in Syria.
For now, the United States believes Russia's intention is to defend its naval base. But it is not clear how much of a threat the Russians really are facing from Syrian opposition forces. There have been no reports of significant fighting in the area lately.
U.S. officials are worried there could be other plans for the troops and military gear should the Russians offload the ship in Tartus.
The Nikolay Filchenkov is a large landing ship capable of carrying up 1,700 tons and 300 troops, according to Human Rights Watch, which monitors ship activity in relation to Syria.
Russia has already been in a fierce back-and-forth with the United States, after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the Russians were shipping attack helicopters to Syria. The Russian government has said the helicopters are not new, but rather were refurbished under an existing contract with Syria.
"As we said before, there are no new combat helicopters supplies to Syria. Our military and technical cooperation with Syria is limited to delivery of defensive arms. As for helicopters, earlier we did a planned maintenance of equipment that had been supplied to Syria many years ago," Russia's Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its website Friday.
A former Russian presidential adviser tells CNN that it does not make sense for Moscow to send troops to offload at the port.
Andranik Migranyan, director of the Institute for Democracy and Cooperation in New York, a Kremlin-backed non-governmental organization, said Russia has opposed introducing any outside troops into Syria because, Russian officials argue, it would create more problems in the violence-torn country.
"I don't see any logic in it," Migranyan told CNN, referring to the reports of troops on their way. "If Russia did that it would invite other countries to send forces to Syria."

There only one problem with your comment. Putin hasn't been in charge in Russia since President Obama took office. Yes, he's likely been the power behind the throne, but he wasn't occupying the throne. The President has met with Medvedev, who, until the most recent election, was the Russian President. I wouldn't call them close, but they managed to at least talk about things. Putin, on the other hand, is an old-time, hard core Russian Big Guy, officially elected but more or less another in the line of Stalin and Khrushchev. He longs for the day when the Soviet Union was feared and respected, and his sole goal is to return to that "glory."
As for Syria? The only reasons the Russians won't want intervention are simple. First, it's the last place in the neighborhood they have any influence, and they fear becoming irrelevant (see Putin above). Second, like China, they fear that if the UN establishes a habit of intervention when governments turn on their own people, they just might want to intervene in Russia...because the difference between Russia and some of the others is small. Think of Chechnya.

The Russians are sending weapons and man power to fortify their naval base in Syria. This is nothing that we would not do ourselves. We have bases in many countries and if uprisings were to potentially threaten one of those we would fortify and shore up the same way. We need to stop being so adversarial with Russia. Why do we expect Russia to act differently than it has on Syria? Can we not see that Syria is somewhat of a microcosm of Russia? For decades strong rulers have governed both countries - effectively denying their citizens a say so in their government. If Russia helps fix things in Syria, it will need to fix them next at home.
Why then would Putin help us with a regime change in Syria, which has even become an opportunity for him at home to showcase Russia's strength in the world? Better to stick with the old script and raid the offices of political opponents or drum up bogus charges against businessmen.

The blurry image of another Russian landing ship of different kind appearing in the middle of the video is that of "Caesar Kunikov", which is indeed in Mediterranean right now. Last week this ship was visiting Italian port of Messina for the commemoration ceremony of opening monument to Russian Sailors who escued locals of Messina during the earthquake in 1908.
We should all know where the image came from. CNN superimposed the source over the image.
And how can reporting on US administration statements and leaks be "made up"? I mean, I'm sure it can. But for what aim?
Notice that the truth and accuracy of the administration's statements, and the truth and accuracy of CNNs reporting of those statements, are two completely different issues.
What are the ultimate goals and whose initiative is a long story.
Let me point to a very simple technical fact:
CNN takes a static photograph from a web suite, puts it into the video, and applies time-changing cropping in such a way that the ship visually appears to be moving, or like the video is taken from a flying plane or helicopter. At the same time the voice of narrator talks about the classified imagery and alleges that this ship is going to Syria. This is definitely made on purpose to create a sense of urgency. Would you agree with this?
In fact, this particular photo was taken for he steep cliff right at the bay entry of Sebastopol bay, not far from the monument to Defenders of Sebastopol. Anybody who ever been in the place will immediately recognize the spot from which the photo was shot. And even if you never been in Sebastopol, you can always do googleearth and go to the particular spot and click on the photograph - there are plenty of them, and you will get a clear impression about how the vicinity of the area looks like.
In fact, if you notice, there are many other photographs of different ships made from exactly the same spot available on the Internet.

It's not manufactured. The news is factual, the problem is that people need movement and action in their news stories or their attention span wanders. There is no conspiracy here, just the lousy state of affairs of reporting in general.
I think I am able to recognize the the context of the blurred fragments of the video showing landing ship of "Caesar Kunikov" class (the specific ship is impossible to identify because the pennant number is to blurry; it appears when the video is still, as well as a 10-second fragment in the middle of the video).
The place is the entrance into the city of Baltiisk on the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad region. Most likely the video is shot by someone during a naval day parade.
The following video from Youtube is not exactly the what you see in the blurred portion, but the area is recognizable, especially if you look to the detailed on landscape at the very end,
