Loose lips and the Obama national security ship

The level of detail spilling out through media reports about crucial national security operations is raising the question of whether President Barack Obama's administration can keep a secret - or in some cases even wants to.

In just the past week, two tell-all articles about Obama's leadership as commander-in-chief have been published, dripping with insider details about his sleeves-rolled-up involvement in choosing terrorist targets for drone strikes and revelations about his amped-up cyber war on Iran.

Each article notes the reporters spoke to "current and former" American officials and presidential advisers, as well as sources from other countries.

"This is unbelievable ... absolutely stunning," a former senior intelligence official said about the level of detail contained in the cyberattack story.

The official noted that the article cited participants in sensitive White House meetings who then told the reporter about top secret discussions.  The article "talks about President Obama giving direction for a cyberweapons attack during a time of peace against a United Nations member state."

The article follows on the heels of what many considered dangerous leaking of details about a mole who helped foil a plot by al Qaeda in Yemen.  The revelations of the British national threatened what was described at the time as an ongoing operation.

"The leak really did endanger sources and methods," Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-California and chair of the Intelligence Committee, told Fox News.

The Yemen plot had many intelligence and national security officials flummoxed and angered by its public airing.  Despite that, a senior administration official then briefed network counterterrorism analysts, including CNN's Frances Townsend, about parts of the operation.

But such briefings are an "obligation" for the administration once a story like the Yemen plot is publicized, insisted National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor.

"The reason that we brief former counterterrorism officials is because they are extremely conscientious about working with us about what can and cannot be said or disclosed," Vietor told Security Clearance.  "They understand that there is an obligation for the U.S. to be transparent with American people about potential threats but will work with us to protect operational equities because they've walked in our shoes."

Subsequently, the intelligence committee initiated a review of its agencies to assess the leak. The FBI launched an investigation as well.

Perhaps the highest profile intelligence coup for the administration, the killing of Osama bin Laden, was followed almost immediately by criticism of how much detail was leaking out. Then-Secretary of Defense Robert Gates complained that after officials agreed in the Situation Room not to reveal operational details, it was mere hours before that agreement was broken.

"The leaks that followed the successful bin Laden mission led to the arrest of Pakistanis and put in danger the mission's heroes and their families," Rep. Peter King, R-New York, said in an interview on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront."

Questions were raised about why details of documents and other articles that were seized during the raid were discussed even before the intelligence community had time to review what they were holding.

Leon Panetta, who at the time was the director of the CIA and is now the defense secretary, penned a letter to CIA staff warning against loose lips.

In the letter, obtained by CNN, Panetta wrote that the operation, "led to an unprecedented amount of very sensitive - in fact, classified - information making its way into the press."

"Disclosure of classified information to anyone not cleared for it - reporters, friends, colleagues in the private sector or other agencies, former agency officers - does tremendous damage to our work. At worst, leaks endanger lives," the letter said.

In the latest case, the White House denied it was orchestrating the leak. Asked Friday if the Times' story detailing the cyberattack on Iran was an "authorized leak," White House spokesman Josh Earnest disagreed "in the strongest possible terms."

"That information is classified for a reason. Publicizing it would pose a threat to our national security," Earnest told reporters.

But the White House has tried to be more open about what have been secretive programs.  The president himself became the first administration official to acknowledge U.S. drones were conducting attacks in Pakistan when he made a comment to a supporter in an online chat, even though officials through all the years of the program had never said publicly they were being conducted.

Then, in April, the president's assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, John Brennan, publicly blew the cover off the drone program, saying in a speech that "yes, in full accordance with the law - and in order to prevent terrorist attacks on the United States and to save American lives - the United States government conducts targeted strikes against specific al Qaeda terrorists, sometimes using remotely piloted aircraft, often referred to publicly as drones."

But that speech, Vietor told CNN's Security Clearance last month, was carefully considered for how revealing it could be.

"I'm not going to get into internal deliberations, but as a general matter we obviously push to be as transparent as we can while being mindful of our national security equities," Vietor said.

      That is just plain stupid. I know for a fact the military does not like him. His "Wiggle room comment" drive's my husband nuts. Are you military? If you were then you would know when a secret operation goes down, that it is never let out who does it. Many units train for it and no one knows who did it except the unit chosen. Obama has a big mouth. He did his vistory dance and claimed glory and he did nothing but say "do it". He was on the golf course and had to be pulled off when it went down. He cares nothing for the military, if fhe did he would keep his mouth shut and consider that lives are more important then a glory moment for him.

Only God will bless them. In fact I won't forget how Prez Bush disturbed their cells every including in the most obscure locations of the earth-no wonder they hated him so intensely.
    Though WMDs were not found with Saddam, it is a known fact by all that Saddam had the program. And by now if Saddam was left intact, the terrorists would possessed the bomb by now, and you and me might not be alive by now. They didn't find the bomb but ousted Saddam? Never mind! Some one said Saddam hid them in Syria close to the US invasion. Might be true. Man was something else.

    I suspect Republican sympathisers. Mitt Romney, last week, started hinting that the Republicans are "tougher" on national security than Democrats, but I also get flash-backs to the last election where John McCain tried to insinuate the same. But my question is: If the Republicans were so tough on security, how come we had 9/11, and especially since the Democrats warned George the Second about the intel?

        Hey Jules, I happen to know first hand that it is the local government calling the DEA to come in not the president sending them in. The same thing happened in Montana and believe it or not it was the Republican leaders that were behind the raids. If fact in Montana the Republican legislature passed a law over turning the bill that was voted in by the citizens. How's that for government overstepping.

      Not the most important thing, although the debt under Obama is pertinent. I would say the most important thing is Obama's promise of transparency and commitment to the rule of law. We still have no way of having his assassinations of US citizens reviewed. He has carte blanche on which American he decides will die and hypocrites say they trust him even though the next president will inherit the precedent of murdering Americans without constitutional rights. Civil liberty groups have had to fight harder against Obama than they did against Bush. Yet somehow Obama is seen as a "good guy."

    It takes a good Defense to stop a good Offense no matter if the Defense knows the play or not. Terrorist and Iran don't have good Defenses. Obama has shown time and time again he's pretty good at what he's been accomplishing, Drones are highly affective, although controversial, yet save many American lives and tax payer money. Cyber war with Iran, and most other governments around the globe, well it's been going on forever, if they didn't already know about it, it's been on the news before, just proves they have a terrible Defense.

You also seem to forget that he acted like a dictator with Libya. Going to war without so much as notifying congress is illegal and is an impeachable offense. Even then it was the people of Libya who got Gaddafi. There was no order from the president and Americans didn't take him out. If Gaddafi is such a prize, why did you not give Bush such credit for getting Saddam who murdered and tortured thousands of his own citizens?     The recent news about the imminent danger due to floods to the nuclear plant in Nebraska is eye opening. First Japan and now this. If technologically advanced countries cannot handle this surely third world countries would also struggle. Quid pro quo transfer of nuclear technology by USA to third world countries such as India needs to be opposed on moral grounds. Billions of people live in that neighborhood and would be at risk from such catastrophes which I am sure the American people would not like to be a party to. We are all well aware that that region is prone to floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and of course terrorism placing such nuclear installations at tremendous risks. US Congress and Obama Administration is urged to reconsider and cancel all the agreements for the transfer of such technologies due “Force Majeure”.

Well, take a look at Wall Street and the downturn of the Economy the last 10 years, thats all due to the capitalism we have here, big companies and banks dont give a shit about the average person, they only care about profits, profits, and more profits...

    The only way we are gonna be able to change all this crap is to rise up and remove these corrupt leaders from their posts and appoint ones who have the great citizens of this nation in their heart, not the size of its coffers.

    It says it right in our constitution:

    It goes on to say that no small matter should be the start of something like this, but i dont think the well-being of our nation is a small thing. It is time we stand up for the country our forefathers built for us, and show them that we will not let these greed mongering sycophants run us out of our jobs and our homes!

Where will your money be and your kids or grandkids be when the GOP cause us to be attacked again?

        Stay in England and stay out of American politics. Any person or leader from another country who had no grandparents or great-grand parents working, sweating, and sacraficing to build America, should stay out of American Politics. I don't care what country it is, you have no business in our business. Americans should never doom itself for an ally. As for your talk of phony polls. There is something on the web that talks about the billionaires and corporate heads supporting the GOP, allegedly have a secret agreement to layoff workers close to the election to jerk around the job numbers. Also, allegedly, there is an agreement with GOP supporters that a country who is an ally of the USA, will come up with phony war mongering evidence and cause an incident to screw with our elections and cost Americans lives.. This type of thing should not be tolerated by honest, decent, American citizens. The one thing that is certain is, this President has kept this country safe. We were hit on Bush/Cheney's watch. We have not been hit on this one. We Americans must do what is right for America, not party. Rom has 17 or more of Bush people working for him and I fear what they will do to our country, and kids, while their kids stay home in comfort with million dollar trust funds. If the GOP destroys this country, they can live else where.Their money is in off shore accounts and banks in other countries. Where will your money be and your kids or grandkids be when the GOP cause us to be attacked again?

      You must be talking about Bush since all the record losses occurred under his watch. As a matter of fact, alot of the security breeches did too.
