The chairman of the Joint Chiefs has ordered the entire U.S. military to remove all anti-Islamic content from its training materials.
Gen. Martin Dempsey sent a letter to the directors of military education institutions, combatant commanders and the heads of all branches of service instructing them to review all relevant training materials to make sure it does not have anti-Islamic content.
The order was precipitated by an elective course called "Perspectives on Islam and Islamic Radicalism," offered at the Joint Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia.
Wired's Danger Room blog was first to report the Dempsey order.
"A student who finished the course last month brought this to his attention, that some materials in that course were inflammatory," Pentagon spokesman Capt. John Kirby said. The material included a statement that Kirby described as "the United States is at war with Islam, and that was presented as an assertion. We are at war with terrorism, specifically al Qaeda ... so that's one example."
"I am concerned that acadmeic institutions within the DoD may be presenting material, both by DoD instructors and guest lecturers, which goes well beyond merely presenting alternative intellectual viewpoints on radicalism to advocating ideas, beliefs and actions that are contrary to our national policy, inconsistent with values of our profession, and disrespectful of the Islamic religion," Dempsey wrote in a the memo.
Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama have repeatedly said that the United States is not at war with Islam.
The 30-day inquiry will try to determine how the material got into the course, and how many U.S. military officers received training using that material. The course has been taught since 2004, but its curriculum was revised in the middle of 2011.
Kirby estimates that "hundreds" of mid-level officers have taken the course, primarily commanders and lieutenant colonels from all four branches of service.
"What we don't know is when this inflammatory language was inserted in the course," Kirby said. But he added that the assumption is it has not been there from the beginning.
"Our concern is that there are some unprofessional things being taught to students in a military curriculum," a defense official explained.
The course at the Joint Forces Staff College has been suspended, and Dempsey has ordered the military chiefs to scour their own training materials to ensure no anti-Islamic content is being taught in other institutions.
Kirby said Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is "aware of the order, and shares Gen. Dempsey's deep concern. He completely endorses the general's decision to review training materials across the board and do a complete scrub."

What if this course was had the same content but about Jews? The question of loyalty that is being asked of Muslims can be asked of Jews in any part of world. Mind you that Jews and Muslims are extremely similar in so many ways. Both religions tend to downplay geographic boundaries and stress on the homogeneity of wider religious community and loyalty to that community rather than country of residence. Unless West stops pouring fuel over the extremism of likes of Al-Qaeda with its war rhetoric, and abandons its utter and outrageous hypocrisy about Jews and Muslims the goal of peace can never be achieved. It must be noted that Muslim victim of religious extremism far outnumber non-Muslim victims. I can testify to that as a grieving Muslim who ancestors have always fought and sacrificed against extremism to restore sanity and peace.

I can even imagine that, if our present Administration had been in "power" in WW2, our Military would have also received similar "Training" about anything that was anti Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Hirohito, et.al.

Well lets just hope that the 'inflammatory' material is not merely what is really Orthodox Islam. What the article does not do, unfortunately, is show us some examples and explain how they are inflammatory. Are they inflammatory but true?

I'm not a religious guy, but I have to agree with Sniper. Islam is not really a religion, but actually a nation. We always think of a nation as being related to a contiguous land mass, but Islam is different. It has all the facets of a national government and system; laws, culture and the most important difference from an actual religion, a military. It has it's own tax system and it's own court system. No matter where it exists the loyalty of it's citizens is to Allah above all else including the US Constitution. We really need to change our view of this phenomenon and admit to ourselves the Islam will never be compatible with democracy then we should act accordingly. Pretending Islam is a religion is like pretending lung cancer is a cold.

The Church's doctrine is inocennt of condoning this abuse. The religion itself cannot be damaged by this, only the Institution.Now if, for example, charges of abuse in the form known as "thighing" were brought against a Muslim imam, he might try to use fatwas condoning the practice as a defense - with interesting results in any Western court of law. (And wouldn't that be fun to watch.) But no priest can ever do this.The issue is, indeed, the conspiracy of silence. Justice for victims must come before any question of "embarrassment" to the institution - or of "shaking the faith" of any of its members. Defrocking can be reserved for guilty verdicts, but the law must be informed of the crime and have access to the criminal for prosecution and there can be no issue of "special status" for the priesthood in this. A bishop who protects and shuttles around an abusing pedophile priest is as guilty of being and accessory to a crime as someone who lets their cousin the bank robber hide in the attic.It would seem that if the Church had taken a no-tolerance stand on this from the get-go and handed over child molesters as a matter of course, they would have saved themselves all this trouble and money. But for some reason they seemed to think cover-ups, intimidations, and guilt-tripping the victims was the way to go. And no, "apologizing" to the Catholics of Ireland is not going to get Benedict anywhere at all. These people have been through it all and heard it all before.
