U.S. moving minesweepers to waters near Iran

By Barbara Starr

Four Navy minesweepers will be on their way to the Persian Gulf within weeks as part of an effort to boost American military capability in the region amid rising tensions with Iran, a Navy official says.

The minesweepers will be loaded onto cargo ships leaving the United States in late April, according to the Navy official.
The deployments were publicly confirmed by Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, earlier this month in testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"We are moving four more mine sweeps to the theater," he said. "That'll make eight. We are moving airborne mine countermeasure helicopters. That'll take us to eight in theater. And ... those, working with the British mine sweeps there, which we exercise with frequently, sets us up a little bit there."

Each of the ships - the USS Sentry (MCM 3), USS Devastator (MCM 6), USS Pioneer (MCM 9) and USS Warrior (MCM 10) - carries a crew of about 60. All are equipped to detect and neutralize mines.

The Navy this month also sent to the region four additional MH-53 Sea Dragon helicopters, which also have the capability to locate and destroy mines.

The additional deployments are part of an effort by Gen. James Mattis, head of the U.S. Central Command, to beef up the American military presence in the region in the face of Iranian threats to shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States has long believed that if Iran tried to shut the strait down it would begin by seeding the waters with mines, which would keep both commercial and military shipping from operating. The Navy is increasingly concerned about Iran's use of undersea mines, which may be tethered to the sea floor and are difficult to detect.

New detection and destruction technologies including lasers are being developed but have yet to be deployed.

So far, Mattis has not requested additional aircraft carrier deployments, but several military officials say the effort is to keep two carrier groups in the region as much as possible. None of the officials would speak on the record due the sensitivity of discussing military deployments to the region.

The Navy is also finishing up refitting the USS Ponce (LPD-15) as a floating staging base. It's expected to also be sent to the region in the next few months, manned by a military and civilian crew. It will provide refueling, resupply and maintenance operations for minesweepers, aircraft and patrol craft at sea in the region.

Have we not learned yet? every time our country goes to war for another country..WE, the American people have to pay for it. Just leave a nuke on their door and get it over with,. Its a cheap way to expell the idiots in charge, and then leave a HUGE parking lot for all the others to prk their jets in. Or, better yet, let Isreal bomb their nuke plants, and set off thei own nukes,,,that way we ahve a fall guy...right? GEEZE!

Iran is accepting other currencies than the dollar for its oil. Iraq did the same thing prior to attack by the US. It is all about the strength of the dollar with everything else a smoke screen.

You hit the nail on the head. Anyone who threatens to replace the almighty "dollar" as the world's standard currency will be attacked under the guise of freedom and democracy. They did it in Iraq and Libya. When Gaddaffi introduced Libya's golden dinar, the international banksters did not hesitate to orchestrate a rebellion to topple his government. It's happening again in Syria and soon Iran. Israel and the zionist international bankers have their fingerprints all over this.

no choice? Ummm, HELLO, Iran hasn't done anything to the US......cowardice, laziness? Because I don't want to go to war? Sure, call me whatever you want, but the fact is the only reason this is coming to such a head like this is due to OIL mainly, and US politicians who love backing Israel, sending others to fight for the politicians interests.....If I'm a coward cuz I have a brain and can read through the lines, whatever......if you're "brave" cuz you buy into whatever the Govt tells you, well good luck fighting that Oil war.

It may be all about politics and money – but that is what nationalism is about, my friend. Weak countries are run over by aggressive neighbors. Money – is about the quality of life. I don't know of too many poor countries where, in the world or present-day communications, people are sittingh dumb and happy. people want security and comfort.

What is the old saying – war is simply dipomacy in another form – ?? Iraq went into Kuwait – because they wanted what Kuwait had. Throughout time, countires have started wars to take away land, riches and to dominate other weaker countries. Other countries have had to respond – or be taken over, like Poland, France, Holland etc.

Understand too, that when the aggressor, the dominant country comes in, they TAKE – whatever they desire. In WII, people in countries that were overrun by Nazi's starved. Not because they didn't produce enough food, they produced plenty – the Nazi's simply took it and sent it back to Germany abnd wherever they wanted it to go.

Countries must have power, resources and a culture that people are willing to accept as being superior, or at least equal – to their enemies. Or else they will be overpowered, or unable to sustain itself, or it will die and wither away.

        March 29, 2012 at 5:21 pm |

@Abner: I agree with everything you just said, but there's definitely a fine line of projecting superiority and instigating wars.....which is what the US likes doing nowadays

Chinatown, it's people like you who scare the hell out of most Americans who have the ability to think beyond their morning at Starbucks. It's not just about oil, it's about maintaining the shipping lanes for free trade. It's about Iran getting squeezed due to their nuclear weapon ambitions and instead of complying with United Nations requirements, Iran threatens to close the Straight of Hormuz. What would you do if you were a leader – say "Please" and drink your Starbucks? Make no mistake, because you are a member of the free world, they HATE you, they want to DESTROY your way of life and the unfortunate part about that is they don't even care to know who Chinatown really is.

You'll see most people dodging the draft because no one is willing to stand behind this ridiculous government. This isn't a fight where we are being attacked either, it's a fight our government wants to instigate so let them fight it on their own. Our government needs to learn to take care of their own before trying to police the world and until they can learn to do that they will find few people willing to fight for them anymore. Those who have fought in the most recent war were fighting against those who attacked us, so they had something worth fighting for.

sounds like "our government" [your words] is not really your government. ok, so stop pretending to be an american. If you are living in the US and you are a citizen than you had the right to vote and just because your man lost doesn't make this government any less "your" government. If you are an american, you're a poor example.

Lee, the United States doesn't currently use conscription (the draft)... it's been a volunteer military since after Vietnam. "Draft-dodging" simply isn't an issue in contemporary American politics.

Yes I thing we should allow Iran to develop nuclear power. The world is a better place with a nuclear Iran. It makes me all fuzzy and warm to know that everyone deep down loves America and accepts our ability to embrace a wide array of personal beliefs. And we can learn from Iran on how to treat people with different views on how woman should be treated. I am so happy that you enlightened me in your idealistic liberalism. I erred in my estimation that the Iranian government does not really hate us. It is really a smokescreen of deferred acceptance and understanding. We could learn how to instal Sharia law into our own government. Yippee Muhammad!!!

You don't consider the 17 terrorist attacks against US interests, culminating with the attacks on 9/11 and subsequent attacks in Bali, Spain & Britain justifiable? I believed that we were provoked by rogue terrorist sponsored governments whom want the civilized world to fall so that their religious secular beliefs can keep people uneducated and down.

Was the amount of money invested into liberating Iraq & Afghanistan justified? Time will tell. Until we, as American's, lose our self righteousness beliefs and entitlement/elitist mentality with the reckless regard of a finite resource and wean ourselves off of foreign oil, we need to spend the trillions of dollars and lose young service men and women. I am also a veteran of Desert Shield/Storm and I believe that our actions were justified when we liberated Kuwait.

I don't think the world need worry. At last count, Iran possessed a grand total of 2 (TWO) minelayers. Iran does have submarines, but the good news is that all except one were built in Iran. I don't even know if they float. And Iran also has destroyers. Yes, all three of them. But only one is out there and active. You can rest assured it's being tracked day and night. And they know that as soon as they even aim their guns, they will be blown to bits. Would you want to be on that ship ?

Carter, between the Iranian Navy and the naval branch of the Revolutionary Guard, Iran has a much larger and more modern fleet than you give them credit for. Granted, it's a drop in the bucket compared to the seapower of the United States, but you're seriously underestimating the reality of the situation. Tehran has been aquiring new weapons systems from China, Russia, and Iran. In fact, the Iranian Navy allegedly possesses 3 Russian-built Kilo-class submarines, in addition to producing their own (of which they allegedly have dozens, although this may include small underwater vessels). They also have several frigates and corvettes, as well as a significant number oif aircraft. The Revolutionary Guard fleet is composed of over 40 offensive ships, not counting smaller patrol boats and zodiacs. They also have a number of coastal anti-ship missile batteries in place. They won't be contending with major naval powers any time soon, but your assessment of the situation doesn't reflect the facts...

Sadly, the US can spend trillions on the military but mandating health insurance for its population is unAmerican and unconstitutional. IEDs turn healthy young servicemen into quadraplegics in Afghanistan but for what end. Unfortunately, this is part and parcel of living in Limbaughland. Iran is next.

So I take it that when Iran gave in to allow inspectors back in after Israel went to Def-con 4 and the tensions between the Iran President and the Supreme Commander doused Irans rhetoric of war and now we are back to pre all of that? Now with N.Korea about to launch a multi stage rocket. I guess history repeats no matter what is learned.

Everyone is beating this bush over letting the "enemy" know what were doing. In the intelligence world this could be a perfect case of disinformation or counter-intelligence. And this is CNN, who Iran has zero love for (but probably read every day.) What better method of disinformation by putting out this "disinfo" on a media outlet our "enemy" hates. They say that a lie will travel halfway around the world while truth is still putting on its shoes. And disinformation works–many of you believe anything you hear on media or internet outlets. Many times its the people themselves who make a lie so believable–the bigger the lie the more likely people will believe it and spread it around. This is intelligence people. The military will hide what needs to be hidden–didn't hear a thing about OBL until after the operation was completed. Meanwhile, back at the Batcave....

Good point. In fact, Obama didn't even hear about the Bin Laden raid until about 20 minutes before, so don't worry that the military is spilling too much info on this one.

Zionism greed and its servants at their best trying to use wars to excel their evil agenda to steal the wealth of the deprived people to build their empire of dictatorships, wars, destruction, and atrocities to protect and feed the Zionist greed. During an interview with the Shalom TV in Israel Mr. Joe Biden, our VP, proudly indicates that he is a Zionist and America without Israel would need a lot more military basis (more than the current 700 military basis in over 130 countries out of the 195 countries in the world!?) Good is to be taught by conduct since words are just words!? West with the leadership of USA and UK created the source of the most of if not all the killing and destruction in the middle (Israel) to deprive the regions from its natural wealth to make more money for the less than 1% of the population. However, I think the war with Iran will change the equation and put an end to Israel and will significantly degrade US and UK stand further in the world. Iran is the one that made occupation of the Iraq and Afghanistan unbearable for the USA and other Zionists supporters. War with Iran started with the Iranian revolution and will go on until the evil Empires have left the middle east region. As you notice Zionists and their supporter have been losing grounds in the Middle East since 1979, accelerated lately with the toppling of their longtime regional puppet dictators. Zionists will not be able to continue with their evil agenda even if they take all their arms including their Atoms to the region. As Victor Hugo says: "No army can stop an idea when its time has come!?". Freedom for the Middle east is here and no army can stop it unless kills everybody there with no body to govern!? Zionists will do even that if they are permitted.

Especially towards the United States which they refer to as the "Great Satan"? Confront them now without nuclear weapons or confront them after they've developed them. Make no mistake, we have not had a WW3 because we and our allies have not fallen into the passive beliefs and policys that let Germany's aggression on Poland fester into WW2.
"The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." Taylor, I'm pretty sure it is a shared belief structure and similar demographics that make Iran and Iraq closer now than they were before. When Iraq was administered by Hussein's secular regime they were enemies, but now that Iraq is forming its own government they will likely be more sympathetic to a theocratic regime that might eventually resemble what has developed in Iran.

Bush, got felt false information about Saddom having WMD and Iran was the one feeding him. Iran knew they could never delvope the bomb if Saddom was still around. Bush fell for line, hook and sinker.

"Another" war? What was the first one? Hope you dont mean Iraq... Israel advised against it but Bush was out to avenge his dad. Amazingly, the geopolitical impact of Bush's war (destroying Shiite Iran's biggest rival and regional counterbalance), is exactly what prompted Iran to adopt its current policies with Hamas, Hezbollah, Syria, and Moslem Brotherhood . Amazingly, its Israel that has to deal with it now. And amazingly, its Israel that is being blamed for current tension in the middle east! Also, amazingly, its Saudi Arabia whose wars we are actually fighting... and its going to be Israel doing most of it for them rather than us. Amazing!

Chuck_ Insurgency is an armed rebellion. This will not be another war in iraq or afghanistan with the US fighting IEDs or rebels hiding in caves, repectively. Iran has a resonable sized army (not compared to the US) and pride. They will not partake in guerilla warfare like independent rebels. This is a country with ships and an air force. The US will dominate Iran not by secret drone strikes but by straight head to head combat.

      • Tinkaren

Oh dont kid yourself If we strike Iran then they will retaliate where they can, due to ideological and domestic pressure, Its possible that they will start bombing the fuck out of the Gulf states, and in countries like Qatar and Bahrain you wont throw a rock without hitting a US base much less a cruise missile which are shitty and Iranian therefore innacurate. They will also activate Hezbollah and Hamas so it will be a fun party to sit back and observe.

        March 29, 2012 at 3:02 pm |
      • Blah blah the wheel's off your trailer

Don't need a major war to bomb a nuclear facility is true! But Iran has six nuclear facilities spread across a country twice the size of Texas. Its most advance facility is imbedded deep into the mountains and well protected! Plus five of the six are well protected by anti-aircraft missiles, both long and short range! Iran has an army of one million! They have a formadible air force, and three Soviet Kilo Class stealth submarines plus submarines they built themselves and a whole lot more. So you see, an effective attack would last days or perhaps weeks and that would result is a wide spread war. Iran would lose in the long run fighting against the US, but it would be a deadly and costly war! So let's hope a compromise is struck through peaceful means!

I think the US military build-up especially mine sweepers and refueling stations is that when Israel was here earlier this month that a date has been set for the long awaited airstrike. Looks to me like maybe June. I don't think Israel can wait until after the elections. I hope I am wrong and some peaceful solution will be announced. God bless and protect our troops!!

      Have you forgotten Watergate?

Luis Lapham once asked the editors of the leading papers why they didn't print what was really happening in DC. They said that they don't print these stories, because two things happen:

      1. the advertisers withdraw theiir advertisements, because they don't want their products associated with sleaze;
      2. the reporters are no longer invited to the cocktail parties in Georgetown, which is where all of the gossip and stories are given.

In reality, Jihad is supposed to be the 'holy struggle' on the inside of each individual. The external jihad is supposed to be used defensively and as a last resort. Extremists of any flavor are a plague on humanity, not just Muslims. If only people could forget the tiny semantics and pay attention to the overall message of religion...

No, people are buying gas-guzzling SUVs to drive up the price of oil. Keeping the Gulf waterways free of mines actually prevents the price of oil from going up because it ensures that oil tankers can continue to pass through those waters. If Iran were able to close the waterway, that would rive up the price of oil.

I don't necessarily agree. However, I think we can fight this way sensibly. The way we do it is by introducing the Iranians to thermonuclear weapons on their own soil. If they are so hell-bent on acquiring such weapons, then lets just give it to them now. Lets turn Tehran radioactive. I say launch enough missiles to effectively make Iran as a country glow in the dark. Do it! It makes perfect sense in this day and age when our government is attempting to reduce costs. We have a huge arsenal... might as well use it. What is there to lose? A bunch of muslims running around chanting "death to america" and "death to israel?" As comical as it is for me to see that on the news each night, I would be far more comical to see them all glow in the dark. Call me crazy... call me insane... call me whatever you like, but do you truly think that an islam-based government such as Iran's is developing nuclear power and not nuclear weapons? They all want to serve Allah... well... I say we should introduce all of them to Allah ourselves. The world wouldn't be missing anything if they were to disappear instantly.

This is not about conquest. If we wanted to conquer Iran we'd have done it already. The Iranian government keeps threatening to shut the waterway, so various other Navies are putting assets in place to ensure that the waterway remains open. If there is confrontation, it will be because the Iranian government wants confrontation. If that happens, the Iranian military will be defeated and its government replaced.

This country became corrupt not long after Thomas Jefferson said this.

During the administration of Ulysses S. Grant, wealthy individuals were meeting the politicians in the lobby of the hotel across the street from the Capital. They met in the lobby of this hotel (hence the term lobbyist), and they brought favors from our politicians.

Now the lobbyist walk boldly in the halls of our congress and senate, wearing $2,000 suits and $750 alligator shoes.

The area in question is NOT international water. They are in fact concerned about Iran placing mines in their own water because their territorial water covers about 80% of the strait at it's most narrow point. Sovereign nations should be allowed to do whatever the hell they please to their lands and waters without fear.

Just stay out of the Iranian waters and there is no issue. However that being said, the world should not be required to help them clean up their waters in the future should they decide to place a bunch of mines in them.

Stupid... IRAN has medium range missles that should they want to disrupt oil supply they could lob a few into the terminal in Saudi and Kuwait and there is very little to stop them from doing such. They can take out a taker with their fleet of small desiel based submaries as well. The tradegy here is of course the US once again being pulled into a position because of Israel. Israel is not the 51st state and trust me could care less about the world economy or more important the economy of the US. The US is being pushed to fight their battle, expended our military and treaury and loose American lifes for a very ungrateful, disrespectful apartide nation. Time we understand we are NOT the world's police force. This is not our fight and that Iran poses no threat to the US. Our constitution provides us a Military for OUR protection not for enforcing the will of Israel. The US is being played like an old fiddle for them and in return they (Israel) will most likely send us a bill that the GOP congress will pass and pay them another few billion dollars to offset the rising costs of their energy.

This run up to war is based on NO FACTS what so ever... Pakistan has the bomb so does Israel so what... dictators love their kingdoms and Iran knows full well to attack the US would mean an end to their kingdom... so the US is not threatened in any way. Israel needs to make peace with its neighbors, stop hurding people into Ghetto and pushing a life of poverty and terrible treatment to these people... then they can make peace the right way. They (Israel) talk about terrorists, but who is the terrorist here?

Should Israel decide to attack Iran then that is their business... they can fight their own battles, pay their own price expend their own military and die their own deaths..

BTW.. thank you Israel for all the help in S. Korea, Viet Nam, Bosnia, Iraq, Afganistan... oh wait they didn't help at all!! But did manage to bring their tin cup to the US for $6 Billion dollars a year.

We are the world, we are the children of one god. God created this beautiful world for us and we want to destroy cause we have some toys and religious difference. God didnt create any religion men did, if there was no religion there wont be any christian, muslims, hindus, jews, etc, first we are humans that is our religion. Starting a war is easy, but the lives of young men and women, children elderly would be lost over religious differences is it really worth it?. Cant we humans for once live in peace and prospertiy and love one another as brother and sister. Do we really have to look everything through religion, cant we look towards each other as human, Is power greed money the only way to be happy. Imagine a world without religion, one can be spritiual and everyone can be spritual, only way one can again grace of god is to love each other help each other and scrafice for each other, not by killing people all over the world. Please people lets save our world spread love not hate, This world is so beautiful, God creation is beautiful love another help another lets grow in happiness as a world not as a country. There are only few bad people in this world but many good, A good person can change heart of bad person and than there will be only good people in this world. Lets make this world a better place to live, lets love not hate, LETS LIVE IN PEACE NOT WAR.

Corruption, hate of any form, power hungry people.. and etc will never go away as much we would like. Its just the way it is, and somebody like the police or when necessary the military needs to step in. With out "policing" wether it is the police or our military even over seas... somebody needs to it. Left unchecked.. the "demons" will rule if left to on their own. Yes, we must step in before a nuc is lobb'd anywhere, and it could very well be done.

But even if there were no religions, I believe manking would still find reasons to hate and to kill because of greed, selfishness, arrogrance, racism, bigotry, etc! It just a complicated world we live in! But if we could all do a little good, then that would be a good start!

Iran has mined those waters several times in the past. We worried about them when I was in the Navy. Back in the 80's and early 90's, the Navy was sweeping Iranian mines, many left over from the Iran-Iraq war, but others seemed to have been deployed long after that conflict.

The US is very good at sweeping mines, and Iran knows it.

Today CNN reported that the US government sanctioned American firms doing business with Iran! Now we see these ships heading into the Gulf with mine sweepers! Well, if you have been paying close attention to President Obama's foreign policy doctrine, then you could come to the conclusion that all this heightened activity is not a sign of an impeding war but a way to up the pressure on Iran to relinquish its nuiclear program! I applaud President Obama's foreign policy because as was the case in Libya, he followed all the necessary stept to bring about peace without more bloodshed. During the Libyan crisis, President Obama pleaded with Colonel Ghadaffi to listen to the wishes of his people and step down but he refused and he caused his own demise.

While I fully support Iran's right to seek and develop a nuclear program for peaceful means, the West has already came to the conclusion that Iran cannot be trusted and it will not allow Iran to have its way! And even if Iran is not lying about its nuclear ambitions, this is a campaign it will never win! Therefore, just I hope for the sake of peace and for the sake of the Iranian people, the Iranian government would realize this and make a decision on their nuclear ambitions. And if Iran was to give up its nuclear ambitions, I would suppose it would get alot of respect and accomodation from the international community, especially after being labeled as a major supplier and supporter of global terrorism! Furthermore, what the earthquake/Sunami desaster in Japan has shown is there is no safe haven when you have nuclear plants in your country and natural desasters strike! And I believe Japan would have been better off if it has no nuclear plants!

So the Iranians are making a nuclear weapon. Just like Iraq in 2003. Why should Iran give up its rights under the NPT when israel is not even a signatory and has 200 nuclear bombs? Before israel complains about Iran violating the NPT maybe israel should sign the NPT. You don't play the game, you don't get to make the rules!

You're wrong! President Obama did go to congress prior to our involvement in Libya! The constitution said if you're going to commit ground troops to support a major war campaign, you have to seek the War Powers Act to do so! But if you're just providing logistics, intelligence or a military air campaign such as a no fly zone, you don't need to seek the War Powers Act! What is said is you have to notify congress in writing two (2) weeks in advance of such campaign.! And President Obama did so three times to congress but as usual, the GOP playing political hardball, accused the President of rushing to war! And what is even more outrageous about the GOP's behavior is that for two months into the Libyan crisis they and their rightwing media attacked and accused the President of "dragging his feet and doing nothing to help the people of Libya who were being attacked by the Ghadaffi regime," only to flip flop and then accuse the President of rushing to war! And that is after supporting a legitimate UN mandated mission to protect the people of Libya! You shouldn't believe everything the GOP and their media tell you because you might be coerced into believing there are still WMD's in Iraq!

"No, he spent millions bombing Libya and it was their own people who took Gaddaffi out in the end" Really??? That is the genius behind it moron. We did not have to spend millions waiting for the trial....

This arguement is ridiculous. On the one hand you say that you support Iran's right to civilian nuclear abilities and then you go on to make the arguement that they should nt be allowed to develop civilian nuclear items.
If Iran was trying to build a nuclear bomb I woud agree with Obama...but even his own research intelligece claims that it is very clear that they are "Not" building a bomb.
Now we have sanctions that are crippling the Iranian people....... by denying them cancer drugs because of duel use and so many other crucial items.
The sanctons on Iraq claimed the lives of several hundred thousand children according to a 2002 UNICEF report. How many Iranian children is Obama willing to sacrifice in order to prevent Iran from having a civilian nuclear program...... whch it has every right to do under internatonal law?
Iran agreed to a fuel exchange program and even that was rejected by Obama.
Now we are going to have a war instead. How does that make for a safer world?

Well, if you do support Iran's right to develop a nuclear program for peaceful means but Iran's failure to relinquish its progran would result in it being destroyed anyway and its people getting killed, would you still insist that they continue? I'm not being hypocritical when I say they have a right to develop such a program but they shouldn't go ahead because I'm just looking at reality. What is going to happen to the Iranian people in the long run if their government don't relinquish this program. When that time comes, what are they going to do they do? Go to war with the West and risk thousands of their people being killed like in Iraq? That's my concern!

You song like a typical ignorant rightwing confederate! At the end it was the people of Libya that took out Ghadaffi but without our air campaign, Ghadaffi would still be alive today, killing and brutalizing his people. And while you say Obama wasted millions on an air campaign while it was the drones and intelligence that got the job done, perhaps you don't realize that if the air campaign hadn't flush him out in the open, the drone would have been ineffective and the rebels wouldn't have been able to capture and kill him! Let's say it was all of the above that helped to make the mission possible!

the argument is not rediculous, you are. Let Iran develop peaceful nuclear energy under COMPLETE UNABRIDGED INSPECTIONS, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME. Once they back off the inspections, then nuke the place and call it a day.

      • Sam Crow

here is what is going on. you are a little off. Iran has not DECIDED to build a bomb. They are, in fact, NOT going to stop enriching uranium. You need to understand one VERY important key to make a nuke, almost anyone with a mechanic background could build a nuke, the URANIUM is the hard part. The bomb is a pretty simple device, you create a barrel (like a tanks barrel) then pack a charge in one side. you explode that charge shooting one piece of Uranium into the other and boom, a city is GONE. yes, there are specifics that my example is missing, but all that can be found on the darn web. What Iran is doing is preparing to be able to make the uranium needed to make a nuke. As far an i am concerned, and hopefully you and everyone else should be too, is that they do not have a shoot at enriching uranium to that level OR EVEN CLOSE TO IT. Sorry, but they cannot have a nuke, and anyone who thinks "just let them be" is stupid and lost.

To those who lean towards anti-Semitism. The Jews historically have been the scapegoat whenever societies have had social/economic problems and the roots of said problems were so complicated that they could not be easilly answered so blame was put on the easiest target, one who had no voice. That is why Israel was founded, to give the Jews a true homeland and voice and ability to protect themselves. They have been surrounded by enemies forever and yet some of our best devises and medicines we can thank them for making for the good of humankind. What have their neighbors done for humankind lately? Answer is, of course, nothing. Israel is like our child who has grown into a young adult we can all be proud of.

If you are going to follow the argument of who was there first… the Israelites where there before the so called ‘Palestinians’ where. So you are going to need a better argument than that.
Also I notice you leave out the fact that land was LOST in WWII. So sad the Pallys sided with the Naz!s. then again maybe you are the type that thinks we should give Texas tback o the Mexicans who then in turn should give it back to the native Americans.

the classic palestinian mantra pegged onto to historical revisionism: forgetting that israel was partitioned in 1948 between arabs and jews, the arabs attacked en masse to get the jewish part back and lost, lost again in 1967 and 1973. since then, bus bombs, rockets, athletes killed, riots; but forget what really happened and instead, chant several times a day the mantra: "woe is me, woe is me, everyone but us is responsible for our misery" . hows the mantra worked so far?

All of America was in the hands of what would become Native Americans before the first European arrived. They had their own religions and those religions were closely tied to the land. Should some coalition of nations get together and declare that land once again the "god-given homeland" of these people?

Israel was "gifted" to the displaced Jews to solve political and sociological problems in Europe. The Jews were ravaged by Hitler and everybody was outraged by that genocide. Still, validating the State of Israel with ancient Biblical claims is ridiculous. Had the Jews and Arabs worked together to form a unified nation free of religious identity, the Jews and the Palestinians could have coexisted. Once again, the problem is religion – the scourge of the earth.

How could Palestine loose WW2? It was occupied by Britain under a League of Nations Mandate dating to the end of WW1! In 1919 Palestine was 90% Arab Christian and Muslim and the Palestinians told Pres Wilson's King Crane Commission in no uncertain terms that they did not want Europeans to come and take away their land. But, nevertheless, the Brits forced a multitude of unwanted migrants on the native population.

It is now getting widely known that 60,000 to80,000 troops will be staged in Kuwait this summer. This is to provide an invasion force to throw at Iran. Lets face the fact that with two Carrier Task Forces and B-52's,B1b,and another Shock and Awe on Iran. The conflict would last about10 minutes at most. America owes this to the Iranian people. The Carter administration's cynical yet blind policy of using religion in order to contain communism helped the Ayatollahs seize power in 1979. Then just recently when the Iranian people rose to claim its freedom, America remained silent. Do we have to wait longer until the Islamic Republic reaches the capacity to develop a nuclear weapon? Just imagine if Saddam Hussein possessed the shadow of a nuclear weapon in the early 90's when he invaded Kuwait. War is not a solution, regime change in Iran is. But for this the noble Iranian people needs outside help.

I happen to speak fluently Farsi (or Persian), Arabic, and French. I have been to Iran (I was right in front of the US Embassy while the US hostages were lingering there). I have been to Egypt, Israel, Palestine, and Turkey. And I know what the heck I am talking about. You have been brain washed by the media, which cites only America's intervention in Iran's internal affairs while supporting the Shah in the 50's, 60', and 70's. The Carter administration dumped the Shah when it feared a possible communist infiltration in Iran. It has only paid lip service to the Iran people's desire for freedom and individual liberties. Go read a couple of books and then come back treating people as idiots...

Once he announced we were leaving Iraq and then Afghanistan, the attacks stepped up against our soldiers. I thought he promised in all those campaign speeches he was ending war, yet we're still in Afghanistan with less soldiers, so it's more dangerous. Soldiers are doing four and more tours, and then he announces he's making the military smaller, with less money given to them, so how is this going to play out? If we're going to keep going to war, we need someone in the admin that knows what they're doing.

Israel will strike the Iranian nuclear sites some time this year (sooner rather than later) with or without the help of the United States. The U.S. military is preparing for the Iranian's to react to the crippling sanctions in June that will severly affect their economy. Iran will not quietly sit by and let the sanctions create civil unrest within its country. They will provoke Israel or the United States to a confrontation to try and unite their people and allies. The Iranian regime will not have the support of their people if the sanctions result in higher unemployment and a depressing economy. The Iranian regime will either have to comply or confront. They will have to make that decision within 6 months or sooner. My guess is that Israel will not wait 6 months to strike Iran.

I think thats a fairly accurate assessment. Israel has historically suprise attacked quite a few countries without warning and without U.S. cooperation due to fears over nuclear proliferation. This time they will have it. I just wish the whole world could live in peace. This all comes down to religious differences.

It is not religious differences, this is about power and influence over the Middle East. Its about coercion and forcing Iran's will over the region. Jews and Islam has lived in peace for a millennium. Both stem from veneration of Abraham and the concept of one God.

        March 29, 2012 at 2:34 pm |
    • Well

Israle likes to suprise attack, yes, but Iran is very ready. Not to mention much of their stuff is buried in deep bunkers that likely can't be "busted". No way Israel could pull it off without the help of the US, an that's an impossibility before Obama's inaugurated.

We seek a pretext to attack Iran and will provoke them until they respond. Only then can we attack with a clear conscience. As for Israel; screw the Zionist Manifest Destiny. I was born in 1948. Israel was attacked by the Arabs with the intent to kill the new nation carved from the Ottoman empire after WW2 when the United Nations created the state. Attacked again in 1967, again in 1973. Your are right that the USA has supported Israel since it was created in 1948. Why? Israel is the only democratic state in the Middle East. It is an unsinkable aircraft carrier just like the UK in WW2. A strategic geographic location that will support the USA at times of need.

Iran has left NO mines, yet the american Navy believes that is what they will do to close the Strait of Hormuz.

this has nothing to do with Israel? are you kidding me....this situation revolves around Israel. Every conflict in the middle east is intertwined with Israel. You are so confused.

Iran has done no such thing. It is the U.S. and the pest called Israel that are forcing war, not Iran. We need to quit the stupidity of enslavement to Israel's aggression.

Really? So the massacre of Syrians has to do with Israel? And Afghanistan has to do with Israel? Hussein butchering millions of Iraqis had to do with Israel? Turkish/Kurd wars have to do with Israel? and I think there is an equation somewhere inversly equating the number of names you have to IQ...

idiot! we created an aggressive Iran by destabilizing Iraq, its traditional regional counter balance. Israel warned us against the Iraq war and now they are worried that America wont mop up its mess. its exactly opposite... Israel is going to end up fighting our wars for us...

The same guys in the media, government and various "think tanks" (I use the words loosely) that pushed for war with Iraq are now doing the same for Iran. And it just so happens that these same folk have long records of pro israel advocacy.

invading Iraq was for Bush's revenge. Israel advised against it and the result of Bush's arrogance is the current existential threat to Israel. The least you can do is shutup while they mop up the mess we made of the middle east.

@STEVE- not sure if you have been following Russia, they WILL NOT do anything at all. Trust & beleive that. Russia's is just about as worse off as N. Korea. They wont agree to it, but wont do anything. Iran is on their own. China wouldnt, or should i say couldnt do anything either. China's land is built for defense if you look at location, and also past history. research my friend
