What would war with Iran look like?

Iran is flaunting its nuclear capability, and pressing for more nuclear facilities in the country.  But some see even greater concerns than Iran's nuclear ambitions.

CNN's Chris Lawrence takes a look at how Iran could use its asymmetric military capabilities in a military conflict.

A whole bunch of innocent people will die. Our boys will die. A few big corporations will send their people over to exploit, do commerce and business in the region. Life will go on as usual. Inflation will go up, milk, bread and butter will remain as our staple food. In reality, another war, another dollar in someone's pocket. Lives don't have any value.

Blake is right. The Pipeline will NOT reduce gas prices, we are already exporting it now. Get a grip, it's all about the MONEY. The un-patriotic Oil Exec's and the Wall Street Barons could care less that the average American is struggling in a poor economy and exporting Gasoline anyway just to make a profit at America's expense. This should be TREASON.

it wouldn't be a "war" silly boy. A "kinder Gentler America" would provide about 60 seconds of " a thousand points of light" to the Mullah's of Iran and their underground Nuclear facilities, as George H.W. Bush likes to say. And then it would be over. Iran would be glowing and unable to threaten anyone else ever again. The US won't even bother invading. Why bother?

Obama says his policy of higher gasoline prices is good for America and we will benifit in the long run.

John did you use conservative mathematics to come to your conclusion?
Under Past Republican President George Bush Oil hit an all time high, gasoline was $5 per gallon. The only way I see $2.50 per gallon gasoline would be to Not allow gasoline exports until the price drops to $2.50. There is a reason why the oil companies are writing 1 million dollar anonamous checks to republican candidates= PROFITS .If we keep allowing the oil companies to export our gasoline ,the prices will continue to climb until we have another Major collapse, just like the last one under George Bush. So Vote republican if you make over 1 million per year.Vote for a democrat if you make under a million per year.

$5 a gallon? really? I dont know where you get your info, because the all time record average price for a gallon of gas is $4.11.... not quite $5. Also, stats show that the average price for gas has been higher under obama than under bush. You should really look into the facts before you start talking. Also, republican candidates are getting 1 million dollar checks from oil companies????? C'mon man! really? That is the silliest thing I've heard. America can get their oil from those great middle eastern producers, like IRAN!!! HAHAHAHHA what a joke. Oil is going to hit $140 a barrel and USA and Europe will go even deeper into Economic Chaos!! Lets all buy houses in Arizona: they will be $5000 next.

Drew peacock, you have no clue what you are talking about. The XL pipeline will simply funnel the oil that Canada is ALREADY exporting to the USA in the upper Midwest states where it is refined and used locally, to the gulf where it will be refined, loaded onto supertankers, and exported to other countries as refined fuel products. If the XL pipeline is approved it will raise gas prices in the upper Midwest by $ .30 per gallon, as the tar sands oil is sent overseas. additionally, this pipeline has significant environmental risks that need to be addresses before any approval.

  20. What Is

Mines, motor boats, multiple rocket launchers, midget submarines, missiles. mmm mm
I think that general meant to say smart magnetic mines, pressure mines, acoustic mines, time and incident delay mines, etc.
If you guys want an further details besides the outline below, let me know.
Iran's best bet is to not attack first. If they are attacked first, it strengthens their position long term.

Iran's larger surface naval ships are not really a factor, an easy target.

Mines are historically the most efficient naval weapons. One would assume Iran has figured ways to self-propel and place them, assisted by tides and currents, into the Straits of Hormuz. Wooden frame, outboard motor, timer could do it. Sent them off from most any point near the stratis. A lot of decoy mines would be very, very helpful.

Multiple rocket launchers are interesting. One BM-21 system can launch a salvo of 40 rockets. A Fajr-3, 12 rockets. The small 107mm rocket launchers can be most anywhere. An Aegis or Arleigh Burke cruiser and destroyer only carry around 100 missiles, and have to be in port to reload. Equip those rockets with sub-munitions, 4, 10 or 20 per rocket, depending on rocket type, do an air burst and spread a rain of steel on the naval ships in order to knock out the ship sensors, which are essential for their combat capability. Without the sensors, or any missiles, the ships are two billion dollar unarmed and unarmored floating targets. Rocket sub-munitions could be effective against helicopters, too.

Midget submarines are a good bet, although the Iranians may be better served by types of around 25 and 50 ton displacement. The concept has been tested in 2011 with the sinking of the South Korean corvette, reportedly by a North Korean midget submarine.

The motor boats, suicide, torpedo, small missile types, go in after the rockets have disabled the ship sensors and the ships have expended their missiles on rockets.

Same for the anti-ship missiles on land, they fire once the ships' combat capability has been degraded.

This is a higher intensity scenario, and how I would do it from an Iranian perspective. For long drawn out attrition and ambiguity, naval mines are the way to go. And don't forget decoys, for all types of weapons.

To counter the globally emerging threat of small attack boat swarms; referred to as Fast Inshore Attack Craft (FIAC) by the United States Navy (USN) a Lockheed Martin led industry team, with the support of the USN developed the FIAC Defense System integrating existing sensors, weapons and decision support systems with innovative command and control (C2) elements to allow host ships to detect, identify, verify hostility and target small boat threats beyond visual range, and then to engage hostile craft with Hellfire missiles as they penetrate the system's five-mile defensive perimeter.

The FIAC Defense System derives its capabilities from the fusion of onboard radar and optical sensors, as well as potentially off-board sensors aboard Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). The system uses the host ship's radar for initial detection and the UAS advanced optical sensors to confirm target identification, capability and intent. Once a potential threat is identified as hostile, the target is then laser-illuminated and engaged with Hellfire missiles from either a deck-mounted launcher, the UAS or from an attack helicopter. Subsequently the UAS optical sensors is used to confirm the lethal engagement and provide a visual Battle Damage Assessment (BDA).

Atomic weapons must be delivered to the target to be used. Rockets, Aircraft...
Aircraft can be shot down during long missions to faraway targets. Rockets need lifting power and accuracy...
So, this war is going to have a long time getting started if the Western powers wait for Iran to develop the necessary delivery systems to bomb Israel, for instance. So war could get started earlier..

I would imagine that the USA, the UK, and France would come after them trying to render the threat harmless. Probably a few more nations also. So many casualties that it cannot be imagined. Not a good idea for anyone to use these horrible weapons.

A real victory for mankind would be the defeat of the arrogant, imperial fascist police state that has become the USA.

that is because the whites developed many different types of bombs. nuclear, chemical, biological, and so on. if the arabs of the middleeast were such terrorist it should have arabs making all these different kinds of race killing bombs. the reason why countries of color dont have the military capabilities as white countries is because of the different maentalities of races. people of color dont have the mentality to go into lab and develope several different types of race eliminators nuke, chem, bio, all of which white countries spend billlions making. whites nature is death and destruction. whites invented 1000times tools of death then they invented tools of life and peace.

A war with Iran SHOULD look like 5 big fashes in the sky, smoke bellowing for a week or so, and when the smoke clears....a HUGE parking lot in the Middle East, with lines already painted on, "God willing" of course. The Iranians wouldn't have a chance. People in the Middle East and North Africa can only strap up bombs and perform other very arcaic death acts. When it comes to an acutal war, they stand no chance. For example, find and watch the first US-Iraq war where Iraq's BEST warriors, the Republican Guard is RUNNING AWAY from our forces. I guess Allah was not with them then, and won't be able to save Iran either. But, I heard Allah already has the Virigns ready, as many Iranians would be meeting him.

Listen to yourselves... makes you sound big and tough to talk about nuking a country, but if they handed you the button and said "Here, if you press this button everyone in Iran will die" not one of you would have the guts to press it. You all just want someone else to do it for you. Here come the "You bet your ass I would" comments... but would you really? Or are you just trying to sound tough. I don't think you would. So stop trying to have someone else do it, cowards.

War with Iran is a stupid idea. Iran is not a threat to us. We would stomp the crap out of them, and they know it, but they aren't going to just roll over, they're going to defend themselves, which is why they are practicing closing the Strait of Hormuz. Such an action would be completely justified by a sovereign nation – the U.S. just doesn't like countries who don't do everything we tell them to do so they try to bully them around. Iran having a nuke wouldn't be a threat to us either... we have 8,500 nukes. People say "Iran would use it on us!" but the only reason they're mad at us to begin with is because we won't let them have it, and they have every right to have it. And all of you ignorant rednecks that I know are going to respond with some warmongering crap, get over yourselves. You're promoting violence and death all over the world... how do you think God feels about that?

This is a reply to "Sam." For some reason there was no "reply" button under your "dare," but yes, this is a "you bet your ass, I would" reply. I don't know if you were born yet in 1979, but I was in my twenties and watched day after day on television as the Iranians held our diplomats hostage and displayed the corpses of our Marines in their streets. I still say we OWE them and it's time for DELIVERY! I wish to God someone would give me that big, red button and tell me if I press it Iran will die because I'd press it in an INSTANT and then I'd go home and celebrate!

If all you nuts would take a minute to understand what would really happen to Israel if Nuclear weapons were used anywhere in the middle east? In a very wide band the fallout will slowly KILL all the Sailors & other armed personnel on the Warships, the people of Southern Europe, North African, Middle East (includes Israel & Saudi Arabia), South Asia, Russia, China, Japan and onwards to the USA. So which IDIOT wants to start a foolish war? No One WINS all lose.

Nope...Not man...The coward dogs known as Islamic Fundies. They are so miserable here on Earth that blowing themselves up (along with some innocent people) seems far more enticing. Yeah...We drop bombs and occassionally miss our mark but this is unintentional. Not so sure about the scores of militant islamic groups. Oh yeah...they also hide in womens clothes and behind women and children while shooting at us. Real stand-up honorable bunch.
