U.S. carrier transits Strait of Hormuz

By Adam Levine

This is a case of no news being news. The U.S. Navy sent the recently arrived aircraft carrier the USS Abraham Lincoln into the Persian Gulf on Sunday. The Lincoln was joined by French and British ships.

The crossing of the Strait of Hormuz was without incident, according to a statement from the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command.

Recently, Iran had threatened the U.S. with retaliation should the Navy send a carrier into the Gulf after the departure of the USS John Stennis.

"USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) completed a regular and routine transit of the Strait of Hormuz, Jan. 22, to conduct maritime security operations as scheduled and in support of requirements set by the combatant commander," the statement said.

In recent years, the United States has kept one carrier in the Gulf and one in the North Arabian Sea for much of the time.

U.S. military officials have told CNN the United States will continue its long-standing military commitment to having an aircraft carrier in the Gulf, but will not say when the transit will take place in light of security concerns about Iran.

Were we supposed to expect an Iranian response... the only reason any of this is even news is some Iranian General spouted off about how they might block the straight and everybody pointed out immediately that Iran doesn't have the capabilities to do it and it would cause a massive disruption to their own economy if they did it... one they can't afford... so this is not suprising... Iran's leadership is grasping at straws hoping to affect the world's leadership and force them to work with them and ease their sanctions... it's not going to happen... I agree with the US policy so far... if you intend to militarize your Nuclear program there will be consequences, unfortunately the only way to punish a regime like this is to sanction it and that ends up hurting the people... who will obviously think more negatively of the US who in reality is only trying to prevent a nuclear arms race in the middle east where everything is so dang volatile in the first place... the last thing they need is an arms race... Unfortunately there aren't that many responsible world leaders... places like Russia could give two sh##'s about Whether or not the Middle East glows for a thousand years... they only look for where they can profit... so we're stuck trying to be the responsible ones and keep psycho's like ahmadenijad from obtaining a weapon of mass destruction... and go figure, we're the evil ones for doing so... whatever... can't make everyone happy....

If you are so fair, why not take Israels nukes away from it as well, they are also as bad as Iran in many ways, routinely killing their unarmed neighbours in Gaza and West Bank.

@Olde Geek, do refer to nuclear warhead torpedoes, the Russian VA-111 Shkval and USN Mk 45 ASTOR (later replaced by Mk48).

The blast radius from their nuclear warheads is/was greater than the torpedoes range, ensuring the destruction of both the attacking and target submarines.

The crossing of Strait of Hormuz by aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN72) is entirely symbolic as the carrier will enjoy more operational flexibility operating outside the strait.

The aforesaid move by United States Navy (USN) is to prove and drive home the fact that the Iranian threat is severely limited only to verbal cautions.

@ Mamoud with respect to everyone here, all I can say is you seem like an expert in butts and crotch sniffing, but if Iran so much as sneezes at the US Navy right now, you and your pathetic Iranian Navy will learn a new word in your limited english vocabulary, and that word will be........... INCINERATED.
        --------------------
        Definition of INCINERATE

        transitive verb
: to cause to burn to ashes

        — in·cin·er·a·tion \-ˌsi-nə-ˈrā-shən\ noun

        Examples of INCINERATE

The waste is incinerated in a large furnace.

They COULD be stupid enough to attack a carrier but by time that attack was stopped, response would be from Missile cruisers and (don't forget) the SECOND carrier. That is NOT in the gulf and sitting as a pretty target.

      • Olde Geek

It's not necessary to swat a fly with a 2 by 4. Only a fly swatter. Immediate response will be tailored to situation. Almost all ships in US Navy carry cruise missiles. No need for STRATEGIC weapons. Iran is not large enough for that response. If they want nukes in response that is how they will do it. By the way are you aware Nuke warheads can be put or torpedoes also?? Less radiation spread that way.

        January 23, 2012 at 9:26 am |
      • Sayan Majumdar

@Olde Geek, yes I am aware of nuclear warheads mounted on torpedoes, usually for strategic targeting of enemy high value port and harbour installations and in extreme cases targeting hostile submarines in close quarters ensuring destruction of both “hunter and hunted”.

        Sayan.

        January 23, 2012 at 10:07 am |
      • Olde Geek

you need to rethink the hunter and hunted thing that is not the way they work. Red October was close for a movie but......they do have a max/min kill distance

probably wake from guided missile cruiser escort. Carrier task force is multiple ships. They NEVER go anywhere alone(especially in hostile territory). If Iranians make a bad move they WILL be eliminated. You could fill this whole page with a list of defensive armament that it carriers posses. Any attack would be destroyed in seconds.

Well no group in any major religion has a monopoly on stupidity, I say group because religion in of themselves dont create problems, its certain selfish groups of people on any side of any faith that seem more interested in creating havoc rather than peace, we see that in the 12th Imam group in shia Islam, we see that in the southern evangelical groups who want the sacred mosque in Al Quds destroyed so it can usher in the return of Jesus. So there are loons everywhere.

It is the job of the majority, meaning us to bring sense to them and to hold them back.

Not a supporter of the Iranian regime, however, there has been no claims and no proofs of "some trying to take their hands on nuclear button" – Do you mean nuclear energy? Is Iran the first country on the earth that is enriching uranium? How many countries have Iran attacked in the past 50-100 years?? How many other countries have nuclear bombs? Tell me about their records??! Peaceful I guess!

This is regardless of the fact that this Iranian regime has to leave by the will of its people, and the western powers can reach that goal (for their own purpose, and to help the Iranian citizens) by aiding the reformists from inside + humanitarian reliefs. What has the point of war ever been FOR THE PEOPLE of either side??

        January 23, 2012 at 10:31 am |
      • Sayan Majumdar

@J.McArthur, Iran, after signing the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and thereafter violating the agreements multiple times is bound to raise suspicion.

Combine it with the shady dealings in nuclear “black market” (courtesy Pakistani scientist A.Q.Khan) and irresponsible statements of current Iranian leadership thereby asking for trouble.

@Sayan Majumdar, it is a Myth that Iran has not attacked another nation in 300 years, actually it has attacked Israel through its proxies, waged a war against saddam and extended it even when Saddam was ready to relent, they have proxies militia in Afghanistan, and have used Shiaism to foment trouble in many Muslim nations, they continue to rely on bluster and showmanship instead of diplomacy and forebearness, this is a stupid regime in many ways and has misued Iranian pride and converted it into some hideous roadside show.
