Romney and Perry attack Obama handling of Israel and Iran

GOP presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Rick Perry came out swinging Wednesday with statements critical of President Obama's handling of the U.S. relationship with Israel, and his administration's policy toward Iran. The statements come a day after reports of an open mic picking up comments by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and President Obama about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In his statement, Romney says Obama is "disdainful of our special relationship of our special relationship with Israel."

In the aftermath of a U.N. report that documented Iran's progress toward making a nuclear weapon, Perry said Obama's policy on Iran "based on outreach and limited sanctions, has failed."

The statements come less than two weeks before CNN hosts a debate with the American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation devoted to national security issues.

Statement from Mitt Romney issued by his campaign -

“President Obama’s derisive remarks about Israel’s Prime Minister confirm what any observer would have gleaned from his public statements and actions toward our longstanding ally, Israel. At a moment when the Jewish state is isolated and under threat, we cannot have an American president who is disdainful of our special relationship with Israel. We have here yet another reason why we need new leadership in the White House.”

Statement by Rick Perry issued by his campaign -

"The new IAEA report is the latest indicator that the regime in Iran is pursuing a nuclear weapons capability. Evidence that this includes work on a nuclear warhead design is particularly alarming – and again puts the lie to Tehran's claim that its nuclear program is for peaceful, energy-related purposes.

"President Obama's policy on Iran, based on outreach and limited sanctions, has failed. This administration has labored under the misconception that Iran's nuclear program could be negotiated away. But the plain truth revealed in the IAEA report is that despite years of negotiations, Tehran's relentless pursuit of nuclear weapons continues.

"A nuclear-armed Iran would pose grave threats to not only American interests abroad, but also to our security at home. Iranian misconduct has met with little if any response from the Obama administration, and has included targeting Americans in Iraq and throughout the Middle East, supporting terrorist groups, threatening our allies, and even plotting to assassinate a foreign ambassador in Washington, D.C.

"This activity will only increase if Tehran obtains a nuclear weapon and feels it has impunity to act as it pleases.

"Working with our allies, the U.S. should act to prevent Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons capability. We must revisit the options President Obama has taken off the table, including tough sanctions on the Iranian Central Bank. And to protect the vital U.S. interests at stake, a responsible commander in chief must be prepared in a worst-case scenario to use military force to destroy key Iranian nuclear sites.

"The U.S. should also act with renewed vigor to support those seeking freedom in Syria, Iran's critical Arab ally, as well in Iran itself, where millions were repressed in 2009 when President Obama tragically ignored the Green Movement to pursue the folly of engagement. Our policy toward the Iranian regime should be based not on hope or on steps that have failed repeatedly, but on thwarting this dangerous regime that pursues nuclear weapons as we help the Iranian people choose their own destiny. Unlike President Obama's failed approach, this would be a realistic and principled policy to keep America safe."

Well, lets face it, the GOP "contenders" cannot attack President Obama on Libya, Iraq, or Al Queda! They are using all they have – and that ain't much. Secretly, this administration has eliminated Iran's nuke capability. President Obama would crush any one of these bums in a foreign policy debate...and I find it funny to see them splashing around so loudly in their little inflatable pool.

" cannot attack President Obama on Libya, Iraq, or Al Queda!" Really? Since the Muslim Brotherhood and AlQueda are taking over in Pakistan, Egypt, and definitely now Libya...and Iraq is siding with Iran and Syria...seems to me like you liberals have no abiility to be honest on foreign affairs. You skew things ...the 1%...that you can say supports your administration's achievements...then you IGNORE the 99% of things this guy does to aid the biggest terrorists, and foist world communist goverment, and islamism on the world. You want to defend him...explain his blind-eye back-turning treatment of the People of Iran who attempted to revolt against their fraudulent islamist dictatorship. And were beaten, imprisoned, tortured and killed. By the hundreds of thousands.

you democrats think just staying away from world issues is the way to go... News flash the U.S. would be under water if we didn't attack after 9/11!
    -----------------------------------------------------------
How are we going to be under water ?
Are we going to sink ?

Below is the truth about our "atack" on Afghanistan.

Unical (Oil company) wanted to build a pipeline (Gas/oil) from Uzbekistan (North of Afganistan)
Down thru Afgan, into Pakistan to the coast.
Ships would take the oil/gas and ship to China/Japan.
    Pakistan said yes.
    Taliban controled Afganistan said no.
(Think what you want about 911)
911 happens, Bin Laden is in Afganistan, we tell the Taliban to give us Bin Laden.
They say "sure" if you have proof he did 911.
We have no proof, but attack anyway, depose Taliban.
We put Karzai in as head of Afganistan government,
Karzai was on the board of Unical !!!!
    The pipeline is now on.
They used American troops with taxpayer money to invade Afganistan,
now the pipeline is being built by.........YUP, you guessed it....
    HALIBURTON.
The morning of 911, as Bush sat in that classroom in Florida
reading about a goat, the bill to attack Afganistan
was sitting on his desk in the oval office
    waiting to be signed.

All of this "stuff" has been planned for years.
The Neocons say the biggest security threat the United States faces is "oil".
We will get it at any expense.
    Please remove your "republican/Democrat label.
The Neocons (Tea Party) are the face of the Koch Brothers (Rothchilds/Rockefellers)
and the White House and congress are under thier control.

Keep watching the news, there is more coming.

Palestinians should go back to thier own country "Syria".
    Problem solved.

I love how people say Israel is building on illegal territory.
    Do you understand realastate ?
Rich Arabs buy up lots on American soil, build condos, and sell them for profit.
They do the same in Israel (Jews and Arabs)
but people scream its a land grab.
No, its just business as usual.
Its only wrong if its in "Israel".

When British controled "Palestine" was mandated, the British promised the land
to the Jews, the Arabs, and even broke a promise with Syria.
Then when they created this mess, they just pulled out.
Israel and Palestine both offered "states"
    but the Arabs refused.
The UN passed this with a majority vote.
Arabs have no claim to Israel.
The Israeli's took a desert and turned it into an oasis.
    now the Arabs want it.
TOO BAD, go build your own, stop trying to steal somebody elses hard work.
You want your own state ?
    Try peace instead of war.

By the way, the people of Gaza, are some of the most overweight people on earth (From the Red Cross)
So much for poor starving Palestinians.
    Great propaganda, huh !!!

Perry doesnt get a security briefing every morning
and has no clue what goes on behind closed doors.
Obama has no problem when using force when needed.
The decision to attack Iran should not be taken lightly.

I just think the US should stop protecting Israel and sending our troops to die for their cause. ONE of the biggest problems to me is that people complain and worry about Iran getting nuclear weapons but Israel is sitting on a arsenal of them. Why should Israel be allowed to keep US manufactured Nuclear Weapons. MAKES NO SENSE. Israel should just stop lobbying and in our country and worry about thier domestic issues.

And they are abiding by that treaty which, BTW, gives them the right under LAW to pursue the technologies that they ARE implementing, including uranium enrichment.

I'm almost afraid to comment on Israel and Netanyahu. . .
It is disturbing to me that many of my American Jewish friends would choose Israel over the US; it is also disturbing to me (even when Bloomberg makes huge donations) the amount of money that also leaves the private sector to fund projects in Israel. Sometimes it feels to me that we are blackmailed into accepting Israel and if we don't then we're anti-semitic, we forget what happen during the holocaust, etc. Just not a clean feeling, and I say this with a desire to truly understand. I agree with those that say neither Perry nor Romney care about Israel, nor any of the others as a matter of fact. . .this is all political posturing. . .they don't need an open mic to get their jabs in.

My point about Israel is that they cause all these issues for us yet what do we get in return. In any friendship or ally partnership, it is about the back and forth and assisting one another. What has Israel ever done for us outside of cause problems in which we must involve ourselves. Is there any benefit from continuing to support them as much as we do????

As a christian I am disturbed by those who feel Israel is not allowed to defend itself. Most liberal idealogues, such as Obama, don't even know that most Israelis are arab-nation refugees. Not European, Russian or American immigrants. Obama's speeches clearly impliy that is who he thinks they are. And he has no clue about that forced jewish immigration...see

Hey guys, remember something. Even though I am not a big fan of the Israeli government or their security services, they have been warning everyone about Iran's nuclear (thats nucler if you're from Texas) capabilities for years. They even offered to destroy it for us, but we thought it would not be in either our or their best interest to get wiped out by a coalition of every Arab country with a nuclear development program out of fear of their being attacked.

There is a simple solution- blow irans nuclear capabilities to smithereens. Russia and china can protest all they want the deed would have already been done. For you obamamaniacs all of obamas foreign policy successes will vaporize if iran gets nukes on his watch. The killing of Ben ladin will become a minnow and iran nukes a whale. You think conservatives see him as unamerican now- wait and see what they'll say about him if iran gets nukes. There is hope for mrs clinton was hawkish on iran. Iran is not north korea.!

I'm already tired of the discussion of President Obama expressing frustration about the Israeli PM when Sarkozy referred to him as a liar. Why do we have a "special" relationship with Israel? Israel is the one building on land that is not their own–the biggest roadblock to the peace process. Could it be that Netanyahu doesn't want peace? Obama is not the first president to be concerned with their actions–especially since we send them billions each year that could help feed out own people. I applaud Obama for occasionally speaking the truth–and I condemn the lobbyists in Washington who put Israel ahead of their own country.

Hello all. Here we go again Romney and Perry say Obama got it all wrong as usual. Nothing new there.
OK, so what would they do or have done differently? Oooops no policy or actions or even ideas are indicated.
The situation throughout has been that Iran broke the Nuclear proliferation treaty. Sanctions were imposed to try and prevent Iran being able to create a bomb ( ineffective). The IAEA was ejected repeatedly by Iran and sanctions toughened. When the latest round of harsher US and allies sanctions are put forward they are vetoed by Russia with China also likely to do the same. NB Russia gave them thier first Nuclear electricity generating power plant before Obama Presidency.
So guys ( Romney, Perry) of superb, experienced, knowledgable, diplomatic international skills ( you have none) what's the alternative.?.. Declare a pre-emptive war on Iran? You think you can convince the American people to do that?? I seriously doubt it.
So Iran get's a nuclear weapon(s) and Israel has many we gave them. We are back to a middle east MAD environment ala US and Russia years ago. ( Mutually Assured Destruction) Either side uses them in the mid east and that triggers WWIII which ensures MAD is fulfilled globally, or just maybe Russia and China decide to leave it a mid east MAD .
If Messrs Romney and Perry can figure out every step of that in a better way than Obama and his team at State and CIA. Then god bless America both of them!! Love to know the plan or policy.
Because a lot of others are going to say Allahu akbar and it will be a MAD WWIII.
I'm not a diplomat either, but if I'm wrong above Perry, Romney tell me where and why and your policy and diplomatic or military actions, under what circumstances
The Nethanyahu spat is mainly reportable only in terms of what Sarkozy crIticised or said. Obama simply said he had to deal with Netanyahu every day, which is true and it is also clear that Obama's ideas re settlements are opposed to Netanyahu actions. An agreement on Israel and Palestine is impossible as long as America (whoever is president) tries to be the arbiter in negotiations the US jewish lobby ensures the US view will be heavily bised towards the israeli side and Romney, Perry simply confirm that status.
America has to come to terms, just as historically Spain, France and the UK that colonialism, or gun boat diplomacy is unsustainable and Empires collapse.
The imposition of "US style of protection of US sovriegnty via Pre -emptive strikes either militarily or via economic sanctions" has run its course and is peceived as not viable especially since it appears and does target mainly Islamic or Muslim regimes. They are and will continue ( think crusades) to defend thier faith and also sovreignty.
For some the perfect model of democracy, is nothing like the US constitution, and its laws ,or religious beliefs
    Regards,
    Hodgson.

Of course, the IAEA was set up by the US, UK, USSR and France to limit the number of members allowed into the Nuclear Club. Unfortunately the non-compliant nuclear states (Israel, India, China, Pakistan) don't play by the rules that we try to tell them to.

Obama is getting us out of Iraq and he has kept us out of Iran. It was the Republicans that got us into that mess in the first place – and lost our standing in the world community (which Obama is also restoring). As far as I'm concerned, the Republicans have now lost all credibility on international issues.

I'm not saying war with Iran is the way to go at all but a country that hates the U.S. and has a nuclear weapon and can use it on our allies or on us is asking for a problem. If we don't act and they use it on us, then what? I told you so just won't erase the damage. I wish we could trust other nations and we never had to go to war but sometimes war is the lesser of 2 evils. If Obama was in office when 9/11 happened and immediately after I think as a nation we would have been finished, or he would have done the exact same thing Bush did and got the bad wrap that he did. Either way he wouldn't have handled it better. We need a president and Obama is not one.

It matters not what we think of each country, it matters only what they think of themselves in relation to the world. Peace is all I ask in America. Protection of our lands, air and seas. And come hell or high water, if any country threatens that may they be removed from the world forever. My country is my only concern. Come even close to our safety zone with nukes, and may they fry in hell. Iran can be contained easily enough with covert operatives. The moment they even come close to completing a nuclear warhead, some oh so mysterious explosion would arise. Who did it? Who knows? The problem with our dang President is his tea and crumpet approach. Hell with that. I say infiltrate Iran, place spies wherever we can, know their every move and action and then "share" the information with friends.

Israel has had a stranglehold on American politics since the mid 60s. We have supported their practices of Apartheid and Ethnic Cleansing since the end of the 6-day war. Now these Chicken Hawks are practically demnading we undertake a military action that the Pentagon is in no way prepared to carry out (although going with "the Army you have" seems to be a standard Republican policy). If the Republican candidates for President want a war with Iran that badly, equip each of them with a M-16 and four magazines, and drop them off at the shore on Iran.

Good idea Joe. But let me remind you that Ron Paul, besides being an OB MD delivering over 20,000 babies, was in the military. He understands the horrors of war, which is why he wants to cut the military and keep us out of foreign conflicts and countries that don't directly threaten America. Ron Paul 2012

War is good for those that are in the business of war. Know anyone like that? Our men and women will die or be maimed but it will be for a good cause like "weapons of mass destruction" or the killing of an unknown Duke that started the Great War. Who profited from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan? Must we have eternal war? Eternal war doomed Rome. War profiteers should be hung....or at least made to fight the wars that they start.

The "unknown Duke" was Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Crown Prince of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He was related to the Kaiser, the Tsar, and the Kings of England, Spain, Italy and Greece. The war itself was a result of Austria declaring war against Serbia, and the resulting entanglement of alliances dragged the rest of Europe into an unwanted war that only Germany was actually prepared to fight.

When obama said jerusalem should be israels capital, it looked as if he was on the right track. When obama speaks he speaks for america. So israel might now have to preemtively defend itself against iran nukes for its friends may turn out to be 'back stabbing'. We would have been in an uproar if israels prime minister was that crass about our president. With the treat of iran and its nuke, it seems iniquitious this disdain with which we hold our number one friend and ally in the region, israel. Obama represents us.

The blindly devoted obama worshipers are not a new phenomena. You can find celebrity worshipers waiting for hours in the freezing cold ... just for a moment's glance of their favorite celebrity. It doesn't matter if the celebrity they fawn over is a drug addict, or beats his wife. This mindset is putty in the hands of public relations and propaganda experts. Historically, the same 'deer in the headlights' followers blindly worshiped the likes of Mao, Hitler, Stalin, and other demagogues, with a charismatic / hypnotic spell over their weak minded. Even when obama is destroying our country, right before their eyes, they insist on going down with the obama ship of fools. It might be compassionate to pity them, but for the fact that they are taking the rest of us, as well as our children down with them.

What these uneducated idiots don't understand is that Iran is not Iraq. Iran has allies such as Russia and China. If USA goes to war with Iran, there will be in war with Russia and China. Iranian people are not going to keep quiet. They are nationalists even though they do not like their government. Then it's going to go down the Iran-Iraq route of 1980-1988 which saw more than 1 million people getting killed. This is not a joke. USA will come out of that war a loser and Obama knows that. Obama cannot be a puppet for Israel. Perry and Romney don't realise that.
Another thing to add is that USA could not have more sanctions on Iran because if Iran doesn't sell its oil to the world market or to the US, we in North America are doomed. So he couldn't extend the sanctions. Again, Romney and Perry are uneducated idiots who don't realise the consequences.

We can use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil!! Just like Iraq!!!!.........Oh wait......Never mind.

      Quivley Kind Sir,
Romney's foreign policy experience exceeds Obama? Please share whatever you have been inhaling.
Romney's foreign policy experience is all about shipping jobs to China from his time at Bain Capital.
Lest I remind you, President Obama is ending the war in Iraq, put together a coalition that got rid of Ghadafi – where Reagan failed etc, with no loss of American lives at a cost of $1 BN. Compare Iraq where your beloved W – a Republican got us into and we have spent over a $1 TR, thousands of our sons and daughters dead, and tens of thousands maimed.
Bin Laden is dead, no terror attacks on the home land, counteless terrorists dead.

Both Perry and Romney sound like war hogs, just like George W Bush. Who wants wars which repeatedly has failed? The USA is very good at invasion of other sovereign countries, but very poor at winning wars.

President Obama's approach so far has paid very good dividends and he should simply ignore theses war hogs and continue doing what he is doing. Both Perry and Romney are not being embraced by republicans as their candidates, so they are sounding strong, pursuing the failed policies of the bush administration to gain some traction.

War hogs like these are not popular in American politics any more

Nice way for the Repubs to generalize. Sarkozy and Obama both said/inferred that Netanyahu is a liar. No comments about Israel. By the Repub standards, everything they criticize Obama, they are criticizing the entire U.S. and its citizens. If that's the case, the Repubs desperately hate the U.S. and Americans as much as they criticize, lie, and badmouth Obama.
