U.S. concerned Israel could strike Iran

By Pentagon Correspondent Barbara Starr

The United States has become increasingly concerned Israel could be preparing to strike Iran's nuclear program, a senior U.S. military official told CNN on Friday.

The U.S. military and intelligence community in recent weeks have stepped up "watchfulness" of both Iran and Israel, according to the senior U.S. military official and a second military official familiar with the U.S. actions.  Asked if the Pentagon was concerned about an attack, the senior military official replied "absolutely." Both officials declined to be identified because of the extreme sensitivity of the matter.

Both the U.S. Central Command, which watches developments in Iran, and the U.S. European Command, which watches developments in Israel, are "increasingly vigilant" in watching potential military movement in both countries.  U.S. satellites are a crucial method of gathering intelligence in both arenas, though the official did not specify that was the method being used.

Separately, another senior U.S. military official is now calling Iran the largest threat to the United States in the Middle East.  Concerns about the threat to American interests from Iran has grown for several reasons, according to military officials.  In addition to the country's nuclear ambitions, recent allegations have come to light about an Iranian assassination plot in Washington, Iranian shipment of weapons into Iraq, and continued Iranian support for the militant group Hezbollah.

The concerns over a possible Israeli strike come as the International Atomic Energy Agency is set to release a report next week detailing Iran's progress on its nuclear weapons development program.  A number of Israeli newspapers in recent days have speculated that the Israeli government could respond with attacks.

The military official told CNN that the United States is watching any Israeli military movements closely as well as those inside Iran.  In the past, the U.S. officials felt they had assurances from Israel that it would give warning to the United States of any attack.

"Now that doesn't seem so ironclad," the official said.

The American assessment is that an Israeli strike could likely include both manned aircraft and use of Israeli Jericho ballistic missiles. Manned aircraft are particularly risky because Israeli pilots would have to cross into third-country airspace, and likely engage in mid-air refueling that could be detected by radars in the region.  In addition, Iranian air defenses are "top notch," according to the official, and pose a threat to both manned aircraft and missiles.  Drones do not have the range to attack Iranian targets and do not carry enough firepower to destroy Iran's underground weapons facilities.

The official underscored long-standing U.S. military concerns about the risk of hostilities to American troops in the region, both those still in Iraq and U.S. naval forces and ground forces throughout the Persian Gulf.  The official also strongly emphasized the United States has no current intention of striking Iran.

Anyone buying the propaganda machine should consider a less intellectually demanding job.
Ms. Starr already has another job of course.

We continue to do the bidding of others, prompted by the 1%, while 99% of us continue to fall behind.

We have not only lost our moral compass, we have also lost of mental compass!

how many billions would breathe a sigh of relief if iran's nuclear ambitions went up in smoke. we lack the guts to do it. the euros lack the guts to do it. the chinese and the russians lack the motivation (either would do it in 24 hours if it suited their interests). the gulfers lack the means. the world _again_ depends on israel. and as much as haters bemoan israel's "militarism" they would benefit from their decisiveness as much as everyone else. and, yes, iranians would benefit, too. ask the iraqis and the syrians and the lybians how much fun it is to live under a regime that is short-circuited on its own grandstanding and absolute power.

I am a man of my word, if you are lucky enough to get it. In 2007 I promised you an uprising (2009) (who stopped it you or us, you let your quarry bleed out) and I also promised you that I would bomb you into the Stone Age. Human Shields, once a human flesh peddler always a human flesh peddler. Its 2005.

The Jews are going to bomb you and you are going to like it, understand me. It is all falling apart and you know it, build it the bomb. That is why I was sent to Israel, messing your s***t up, planning war for 6 years, you human shields and building the bomb, that was your plan. Clocks ticking.

Pound on Israel all you want. But when an Iranian nuke lights up a horizon somewhere...anywhere...you all will wish that Israel hadn't waited so long to act. *I* wish that Bush had acted years ago. I *know* that Obama doesn't have any intention of doing so. Word has it, this Administration is conceding that an Iranian nuke is just a reality, whether it's next month or 3 years from now. It's unwilling to incur the HUGE loss of life in order to prevent a bomb from going off that will incur much more devastation. This President is a coward.

That's a stupid post. No one knows where we would be so to insinuate Israel does good and it sure as hell doesn't is foolish. Just because you believe in anarchy and support Israel when it breaks the law and attack others unprovoked doesn't mean people agree with you or that you just "laid down the knowledge". You sound like a damn fool with your hypotheticals.

An Iranian nuke is not going to light up anybody's night and you, and several heads of the Israeli security establishment, know it. Israel, on the other hand, is an aggressive, heavily armed, militaristic state that the world should be concerned about. I hope no one is surprised if Iran or other regional nations retaliate upon Israel if it attacks first.

So we are posturing to help Iran? We heard Israel announce they might need to attack, if international pressure fails.
They did not make such a proclamation before attacking Saddam Hussein's nuclear weapons program, nor Syria's. Perhaps the deep thinkers at the pentagon should learn to recognize an opportunity to avoid war when it is presented.

Cowardice is a gut reaction, not a plan. Taking on Iran would be a bloodbath and I think everyone knows that. Israel would take a pounding as would some of our carriers. But that's nothing compared to what nukes can do. A nuclear-armed Iran would probably succeed in blackmailing the west because our leaders don't have the spine to strike first and take our lumps. We need to think less, act now, and take our lumps today because it will be far far worse tomorrow. Remember, the Muslims don't mind martyring the innocent. Their cities, ours...they won't care so long as they believe they can deal us a crippling blow. Living in the stone age actually gives them an advantage.

People, for God sake, NO ONE IN IRAN EVER "THREATENED TO WIPE ISRAEL OFF THE MAP"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a seriously FALSE accusation based on the (deliberately) bad interpretation of Ahmadinejad's words: "een (this) rezhim-e eshghalgar-e qods (regime that occupies Jerusalem) bayad (must) az (from) safheh-ye (pages of) ruzgar (history) mahv shavad (vanish)"
In other words: Ahmadinejad said that the Israeli REGIME must vanish from the pages of history. This is the sentence that all you ranting biggots are making a fuss about. This is the so called "annihilation threat".
I hope the more intelligent among you will now understand that Ahmadinejad was only stating something that has been stated before by many other Western Nations towards Iran. And believe me, when I hear some of you talking I get the feeling there are more people in the West who'd like to wipe Iran off the map than vice verse.

Israeli nazi policies backed by its nukes and WMD's guarantee war, Israel wiped out Palestine from map and refuses to recognize its right to exist. Iran does not colonize other people's homes. Only Israel does. If anything, Israel should be stripped from nukes and all means of launching new wars on Palestine, Lebanon, Gaza, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, and now Iran. Israel is a nazi regime destined to vanish even according to CIA analysis, mostly due to its belligerent policies.

islamic terrorists have drawn up fake maps with a fictional palesitinia drawn on them.
it's not israel's fault that the maps are fake. the problem is with the dopes, such as this little terrorist w h o r e who believe the fake maps and the primitive pali propaganda.
israel never signed any npt's and are fully within their rights to develop and maintain a nuclear weapons program. iran, on the other hand, signed the treaty. i understand that honor and backing own words with actions is a foreign concept to islamo terrorist w h o r e s, but to those outside your sheepish cult it still means a thing or two. whatever israel has it hasn't used any of it even if they had plenty of incentive to do so when faced with hordes of moral and mental zombies whom you represent, right at their doorstep. there is little doubt however, that your little infant throat-cutting and pregnant woman-shooting cult which is funded and nurtured by the very same iranian rulers you so ardently defend would not stop for an instant in using wmd's against people that don't share their religious superiority manias.

WE NEED TO BE HAVING A NATIONAL DISCUSSION ABOUT THE RISK COMING OUT OF IRAN, AND WHETHER THE U.S. CAN TOLERATE AN IRAN WITH NUKES. SOMEBODY NEEDS TO MAKE THE POINT THAT IF A SMUGGLED NUKE GOES OFF TOMORROW IN L.A., WE CAN BE REASONABLY CONFIDENT THAT IT WAS PAKISTANI, AND WE CAN RESPOND QUICKLY. BUT IF IRAN ALSO HAS NUKES, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO PROVE WHETHER THE ONE THAT HIT THE U.S. WAS PAKISTANI OR IRANIAN? WHO WILL THE U.S. RETALIATE AGAINST? WON'T THIS DRAMATICALLY INCREASE THE RISK OF A NUCLEAR STRIKE ON THE U.S.? IF THREE ISLAMIC COUNTRIES WERE TO GET NUKES, DON'T WE FACE A NEARLY 100% CHANCE OF GETTING NUKED? Do you know that experts estimate that we have a 50% chance of getting nuked with things the way they are now?

Iran has had the least amount of terrorists of all Middle Eastern countries. Israel continues to sap our tax payer dollars. America overthrew Iran's democracy in the 50's. Israel antagonizes every Islamic/Arab country. Israel is the most xenophobic and racist state in existence. Iran held an 1,800 person candle light vigil in Tehran on 9/11. Benjamin Netanyahu's comment: Now you know how it feels. Israel was created out of Western guilt on the basis of a fictitious belief (like all religions) by removing people off their lands. No one knows why we're still in the Middle East except the Israel Lobby and the American government. No one knows why we're "allies" with Israel. Travel abroad and see how the rest live..........If you find a country that seems to compare, it is only because the they have great natural resources of which they sell to the US or they are tapping into the US as their natural resource.

The question I have asked my entire life is this.
What does Israel have or do that we are willing to go to war or bankrupt our own nation for them?
    Answr?
    NOTHING!!!
Yet because of some knucklehead religion based entirely on human sacrifice, (Christianity) we as a nation are held hostage???

Like it or not, this country (USA) was founded on Christianity. Then all the non-believers came over and started turning this country into a joke.

This country was NOT founded on Christianity. Most of the founding fathers were Deists. Look up what Deist means. There's a big difference between that and Christianity. Most were outspoken about their disdain for organized religion and how it is corrosive on society, particularly Christianity. Just because you read the word "God" on the dollar bill or the mention of a Creator in the Declaration of Independence, you think it's YOUR god. Sorry, you're mistaken. Even Lincoln has plenty of written opinion against Christianity to go along with Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Paine, Ben Franklin. Or do you consider this country to have different founding fathers? Educate yourself! If this nation was founded on Christianity, why isn't Jesus, The Bible, or Christianity mentioned even once in the Declaration or our Constitution?

      • Chris, Austin

Ryan, try reading something (ridiculous, I know). This country was not founded on Christianity – most of the founders were deists, people who believed in God and a creator, but not in organized religion. Many of them said Christianity was a dangerous European philosophy that should be kept out of the new nation. Furthermore, Christians have always hated Jews. Look up a little thing called the inquisition. Their recent conversion of belief is to their credit, but hardly a justification for war on behalf of Israel.

I read not too long ago a comment referring to Israel as "America's aircraft carrier in the Middle-East," which is oversimplified, but nevertheless makes a point. Israel is a highly technological representative democracy surrounded by third-world countries, which is enough of a reason to support them. The fact that they are attacked on an almost daily basis should be enough to convince anyone they are threatened by their undemocratic, militaristic neighbors who should not be and can not be trusted with cosmic weapons.

Furthermore, Iran is a theocratic regime allied with Russia and China against us, and can and will do everything they can to destroy Israel, needing no justification other than the fact that they're our allies.

The real mistake is assuming that these regimes hate Israel for being a Jewish state – they couldn't care less, that's just used to stoke the fires of fanaticism amongst their uneducated populace. They hate Israel for being a bastion of western democracy and power in what they believe is their exclusive realm. The war isn't about religion – religion isn't even about religion. It's about power. And when you want power, the first place you look for people willing to blindly hand it over to you are amongst religious fanatics.

I'm so glad we don't have any people like that in the US.

Russians and the Chinese have done know such thing and could care less. The Russkies love the Iranians so much they refuse to sell Iran Russia's latest air-defense system. As Iran has already paid the Russins in full for developing Iran's nuclear program, the Russians no longer care if Israel bomds it back to the stone age. As for China, Israel is very popular in China. So with respect to WW3 talk, it is laughable. When Israel goes after Iran, they will have plenty of help. Suadi Arabian and Israeli military offcials have already collabrotaed; corridors in Saudi airspace have already been established for use by the ISraeli airforce. In addition Azerbejan is allowing ISrael to base military equipment.

What is hilarious is the idea, that only ISrael feels threatened by Iran. The Saudis and the gulf states would be only to happy to see Israel put Iran in its place, which is why they will allow Israel to use their airpsace.

The ignoramuses really have shown how clueless they are today.

Iran is attempting to become a world superpower, but they first need to become at least a regional one. in that they are putting themselves squarely at odds with the sunnite gulf nations. saudis will rip their tongues out before openly admitting to collaborating with israel, yet they will give an arm and a leg to get an advantage over their regional arch-rivals.

Nukes don´t make a superpower, see North Korea, not even a regional power despite having a handful of nukes in working condition. I agree with a surgical attack on Iran only and only if the other countries who have developed nukes illegally will be forced to scrap them too. If we want to get the world rid of nukes, then let´s do it thoroughly: not only USA and Russia should scrap nukes but the other nuke equipped countries too. Using a double standard and allowing certain countries to develop nukes just because they´re friendly will only give nuke-pursuer countries like Iran and Syria reasons to point the finger back at the accusers. The "ambiguous policy" of Israel regarding its nuclear program is accepted , China, India and Pakistan developed nukes almost undisturbed , North Korea, a nuke equipped country with an aggressive foreign policy, especially towards South Korea, sits untouched by a single bullet, and still everyone´s eyes are fixed on Iran. USA and Russia shouldn´t reduce their arsenals only, but also put pressure on the other nuke armed countries to do the same, and that regardless of their "friendliness quotient".

Can someone explain to me why we should care about Israel? An ally for the sake of being an ally is not something that is worth going to war over. No one ever talks about the 1,800 candle light vigil the Iranian people held in Tehran the night of 9/11. No one ever talks about how Iran was an enemy of Al Qaeda and that Bin Laden urged his followers to kill Iranians.

The worst part is is that Iran was a democratic government until the CIA and MI6 overthrew it in the 50's. This is a WIDELY known fact, but not something the government wants you to know.

We care about Israel for the same reason we care about Japan, or South Korea, or England, or France (okay, maybe a little less) – because they're on our side, and they are strategically located in amongst our enemies, big, powerful countries that would love it if the US were to fall of the map tomorrow and let them run the world their way. The idea that the US supports our allies out of charity or the goodness of our national hearts is pathetically naive. We are a nation-state, and we act in our own best interests.

And, Chris, you would do well to remember that Iran is a democracy today. Syria, too. Just ask them.

At some point in the future, Iran will have the atomic bomb and I firmly believe they will use it on Israel. So the only choice for Israel is to strike before they do.
We can talk against Israel as much as we can but it is this country that is living under the threat of a nuclear attack. At some point they will have no choice then to strike first. We should be working harder on trying to disarm Iran by negotiating with them. Only regular people from both side will be paying for the stupidity of their respective governments.

Moebar, the Hiroshima bomb didn't destroy that city, because it didn't kill all the people. Same with a low yield Iranian detonation within Israel. It wouldn't wipe out all the people. They would rebuild. They would suffer but rebuild but why should it come to that. No matter what, Iran should always be prevented from building a bomb. That regime would detonate a nuclear weapon and would not care about any of the reprcussions, except for maybe a retalitory Nuclear detonation from the US.

Here is why we are concerned. Iran has made it known that in the event of an attack on their country, no matter who did it, they would make a try to shut down the Persian Gulf via choking the Straight of Hormuz. This would be tidal wave in economic circles because a very very large quantity of oil flows through that straight everyday. Can you say double gas prices overnight? It affects us in many ways. First of all, Iran can move to control shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz. Iran is placed very well strategically, which is why the U.S. cares so much in the first place. If it wasn't in such an important position, it wouldn't matter. Plus, a war between Iran and Israel could bring a third nation into, which considering most of them have majority Muslim populations, the other nations would likely side with Iran. While Israel refuses to admit it, it's widely believed that they have nuclear weapons. Lastly, the U.S. military may not be on the ground in Iraq, they still have a very large naval presence in the area, which could be caught in the middle and forced to get involved.

one thing folks fail to understand is that the u.s. has 0 chance of avoiding being dragged into a WW3 and any war involving the middle east and israel at this point will surely deteriorate into a global war. rather than dropping our pants, bending over, closing our eyes, and trying to whistle a happy tune, we would be better advised to try and defuse the situation before it explodes or, if an explosion is imminent, at least try to make it a "controlled" one by bending it in our favor from the start... You can't wait out evil hoping it will go away. WW2 is a shining example of the fallacy of that strategy.

Iran makes direct threats and then we blame Israel based on some conspiracy theory? Want to make a list of the countries within 100 miles of Israel's borders who have either directly attacked them or who have directly supported terrorist groups operating within Israel? It's a long one – get a sheet of Legal sized paper...

The Iranian army would retreat and surrender just like we saw the Iraqis do...you remember, the ones we were told were sooooo bad and scary. Im not advocating more war or bombing etc...but the truth is, if there's a real threat and something needs to be done, it will get done and we'll topple that regime. And the posts about the world not wanting an islamic regime in power...true. religion has no place in politics let alone running a country with nuclear capabilities. Islamic extremism = nutism

Jerry is right. Iran won't have much left.
The problem is, Obama and Hillary Clinton put this in motion when they basically, back around March, removed language saying the US would never allow for a Nuclear-Armed Iran. It was then that Israel realized it would have to be ready to strike.

Syria is really the only real response threat; maybe Egypt. But Syria has their own problems – though this might end up rallying Syrians in unity..

Russia would complain and holler but in the end will not do a dang thing. China also realizes that if they do anything to help protect Iran, then they would lose about 90% of all exports in return basically cutting their throats for what?

You are mistaken. If Israel and Iran go to war, you will not go to defend Israel. But your tax dollars certainly will, and your children may some day, as this would not be a cut and dry 6-day war. Should either country attack the other, the US will get involved (not that Obama or the people generally want to) to keep its strongest ally in the region from being wiped off the map, and it could touch off a full-scale Mid-East war that will last years.
Iran is not Iraq – the population is much larger, the people are not divided into 3-4 factions suspicious of each other, they have much greater resources, and their defenses are not to be trifled with. Iran will not be deefated easily. On the other hand, Israelis are ever nervous and keep one finger on the button (yes, THAT button) , due to their diminutive size and resolve to exist in a rough, hostile neighborhood. Israel will not allow itself to lose a war with Iran, which means eventual reliance on US might and diplomacy, or "the" bomb as a fallback to ensure survival.
Pray Iran keeps its mouth shut and Israel doesn't get twitchy, or the situation will get very, very bad very fast.

Further, we have a lot to be worried about in the U.S. First, if Israel strikes first, which I would be willing to bet they will, Iran will retaliate, not just against Israel, but the U.S., and if Iran has indeed been working with either the Pakistanians, or, worse yet, North Korea, they could have already have planned and be ready to carry out an attack on the U.S. That attack will not be with a "bunker buster." It would be much more significant, and deadly. This information is deeply concerning.

"the International Atomic Energy Agency is set to release a report next week detailing Iran's progress on its nuclear weapons development program"

Not so. The IAEA is releasing a report that makes it clear they don't know *IF* Iran has any nuclear weapons development program at all! There are very good reasons to suspect that Iran's oil has long since hit peak production and is running out, however. Economic growth for Iran practically demands that they create alternate sources of energy, because it is far more profitable for them to meet their own electricity needs by using nuclear, coal, or hydro for it, while saving their limited oil reserves for export, where the prices only keep going up. Green energy for Iran is simply much more expensive than any of these three choices would be.

The fact is, there is no compelling evidence to suggest that Iran has enriched any of their uranium beyond the relatively low levels needed for electricity generation, which Iran has every legal right to do. Indeed, evidence suggests that they do not have the ability to refine uranium to that degree, even if they wanted to, as they lack the right kind of reactor. It's like comparing light beer to everclear!

CNN should correct their text / do a retraction, if they cannot conclusively show that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. Even GWB went back on his previous statements regarding an Iranian nuclear weapons program, after a national intelligence estimate said that Iran scrapped its nuclear weapons aspirations long ago.

Iran would nuke Israel in a New York minute if they could, so the Israelis shouldn't be ridiculed for protecting themselves. Iran has publically called for the enialaiton of Israel, which cannot be ignored. I think Israel will lead the attack, and when Iran retaliates against American interests, we'll have no choice but to respond in kind. I have sympathy for the Iranian people, as I don't believe they agree with the belligerence of their gov't. The world could not withstand the mayhem of a nuclear-armed Iran.

did someone just say the Iranian government is belligerent? Compared to what? Surely, not the United States, because we attack countries like flies. Maybe they are belligerent compared to Canada. I suppose I shouldn't expect much from someone who says "enialation."

Even if Iran had a nuke, they couldn't use it on Israel without risk of being blown off the face of the Earth by the U.S.

Israel's going to get messed up if they attack Iran. They will, though.

US get as much from Israel as it gives them...we give them billions, but it's a pittance compared to the amount of intel, spy capability and tech capability that comes from Israel back to the US. The aid being sent has to be disclosed because it's part of the budget, but the secrets and intel coming back are classified. Anyone who does just a bit of digging can easily see how truly intertwined the two intel operations of both countries are.

Israel gives virtually nothing to the US. Intelligence, top secret technology and spying capability etc, these are things we can't possible quantify or prove – so it remains mere speculation. How convenient. If the relationship wasn't so lopsided, why would the pro-Israel lobbies need to be so powerful in this country? Is there a pro-US lobby in Israel?

If they want a holy war, then let's have a really big one once and for all. Gather all of them in one place, no weapons, and let them all fight to the death. The group that survives at the end can claim their god is real. I'm sick and tire of these wars. Just end it once and for all!

1500 km each way doesn't leave a lot of room for operations, plus the added weight of munitions may also decrease the max range. it sounds pretty reasonable to me that they may need in flight fill.

    • dmcPegaso

Also, do you really think they run missions as the crow flies? So Iranian radar picks up UAV on the way there, UAV bombs target, UAV heads right back to be shot down by aforementioned radar facility? If they were dumb enough to fly out and back in a straight line, they deserve to be shot down. Seems like in hostile territory, you'd want to take an indirect route in and out, possibly following terrain lines, no?

    • Baumer

fedup, you clearly do not understand air warfare. 3300km is the max range...that means the jet is stripped down with now weapons. A lot of good it will do that way. Additionally, yes it may be a 1500km one way trip (3000km roundtrip) but do you think they would fly straight there and back? Ever heard of flying around radars and SAM sites...you can't just fly straight there and back! If you are going to spit out specifications for an aircraft, then you may want to study the theory and use of the aircraft first.

This is what is going on now.

From 911, to the war on terrorism, to the global meltdown on finances.

If U.S. politicians are concerned about Israel possibly attacking Iran all they have to do is to indicate that if such an attack takes place the U.S. will terminate all aid to Israel. And the U.S. official's comment about Iran posing the greatest threat to U.S interests in the region it must be remembered that Iran geographically is in the region and the U.S. is not. Also, regional "terrorism" has two faces – the U.S. actively is sponsoring groups in Iran which are fighting to overthrow the Islamic government, certainly a terrorist undertaking but not referred to as such by the U.S. while the U.S. does refer to Iran's support for such regional organisations as embodying "terrorism." That is dual-standards hypocrisy.

We must all do our part to help the Chosen People of Israel and Palestine to make it through crisis. Send donations to Israeli organizations, always give the right-of-way to anyone you think is a Semite – they are above us on the genetic ladder and we should respect them more than any race. It is so written in the Talmud.

US has to stay out of this one. As long as the Strait of Hormuz isn't rigged with mines or blocked, we should stay out. We are still trying to pull out of two wars, plus we are broke!
On the down side, if Iran got nuclear weapons and sold them to terror groups on the black market only to be sneaked into Tel Aviv and detonated? The consequences are hard to contemplate. The entire world is going nuts anyway.

WRONG Charms. The US is required by treaty and many other obligations to come to the aid of Israel in a time of war. The US must be ready to go at a moment's notice if war breaks out in the middle east.

Given Iran's vitriolic attacks on Israel and its right to exist, and their aiding and abetting those who are launching attacks that result in the deaths of Israeli civilians, it really isn't surprising that Israel might believe it is necessary to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. Perhaps some "good offices" could be persuaded to ask Iran if it thinks it ought to enjoy immunity in the face of its own extremely provocative actions?
